Abstract

A litter for all types of small animals, esp. cats, mice, cavies, etc. has the advantage not only of being highly absorbent for fluids but also prevents the build up of unpleasant odours, for a relatively long period. It consists of a mixt. of 75-80 wt. % wood chips and 20-25 wt. % of argillaceous earth, burned and bleached pref. at 800 degrees C. This is much cheaper than a litter formed by 100% argillaceous earth burned and bleached at 1400 degrees C and has the further advantage that the granules formed at 800 degrees C fall into powder and so cannot harm small animals with delicate feet.

Seit einigen Jahren ist nun eine Einstreu auf dem Markt, welche diesen Nachteil der Sägespäne nicht aufweist, d.h. stark geruchbindend ist. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Granulat, bestehend aus bei 14000 gebrannter, gebleichter Tonerde. Diese gebrannte Tonerde, auf dem Markt unter dem Namen Sebiolith bekannt, ist hydroskopisch und geruchsbindend und wird vor allem als Katzenstreu verwendet. Ein Wechsel der Einstreu ist somit nur etwa alle acht Tage erforderlich. Im Gegensatz dazu muß bekanntlich etwa in medizinischen Instituten mit Ratten als Versuchstiere die Einstreu mehrmals täglich gewechselt werden, was einen beträchtlichen Personalaufwand erfordert.
