Description

The invention relates to an electrolytic capacitor, consisting of wound layers of an optionally roughened, formed anode foil, a cathode foil and spacers that are connected to a water-containing operating electrolytes based on glycol borate are soaked.
The material from which the anode and cathode foils are made is a so-called valve metal. in the In general, aluminum is used for electrolytic capacitors with a "wet" operating electrolyte. It but are also other valve metals, such as. B. tantalum, zirconium, niobium or titanium for the production of such Capacitors known. The water that the operating electrolyte contains can be in two different ways reach. Firstly, it can be added during production, but it can also be so-called esterification water that is used during production of the electrolyte in this by the esterification of z. B. Ethylene glycol and boric acid forms.
In the case of electrolytic capacitors, this means an increase in the capacity per unit volume, which can be achieved by means of more highly roughened anode foils. However, the higher degrees of roughness also result in an increase in the loss factor. This increase in the loss factor can be compensated for by using more highly conductive operating electrolytes, since the ohmic components of the loss factor are thereby reduced. Besides increasing the conductivity r> 5 ness in general and their temperature dependence should be reduced as possible to keep even at low temperatures the loss factor and the other electrical characteristics such as capacitance and impedance, as small as possible. f> o
Operating electrolytes that meet these requirements are the so-called "solvent electrolytes", from organic solvents, such as. B. methyl glycol or dimethylformamide, and salts soluble therein of preferably organic acids with amines f> 5. The use of these electrolytes is, however disadvantageous because of their aggressiveness compared to conventional electrolytic capacitors The materials used require the use of new, expensive building materials. Next to it are Special precautions are required when processing such electrolytes, as their constituents are poisonous.
However, it has now been found that even with water-containing operating electrolytes based on glycol borate, to which, in addition to the esterification water, further water may be added under certain circumstances, a high conductivity and thus lower loss factors can be achieved.
When using water-containing operating electrolytes, however, a number of difficulties have to be avoided. In the case of aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the water attacks the anodically generated oxide layer (hydration) and worsens its dielectric effectiveness. This can be done in a known manner, for. B. by phosphate additives fix. Furthermore, when the electrolytic capacitor is in operation, electrolytic decomposition of the water content takes place: As a result of the residual current, albeit a small one, gaseous hydrogen and oxygen are formed. While the oxygen by oxidation z. B. the anode foil is bound, the hydrogen causes an overpressure in the sealed capacitor. This electrolytically generated amount of gas can when using z. B. aluminum foils add a not inconsiderable amount of further hydrogen. This is caused by the chemical reaction of the cathode material with the water content of the electrolyte after the reaction:
2 Al+ 6 H2O- 2 AI(OH)1 + 3 H>.2 Al + 6 H 2 O- 2 Al (OH) 1 + 3 H>.
The gas pressure generated can, under unfavorable circumstances, especially in the case of electrolytic capacitors with high filling factors or low empty volume, destroy the housing or burst the predetermined breaking points cause what amounts to a total failure of the component.
From DE-AS 12 67 347 it is known an operating electrolyte with a non-metallic cation from a quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium, sulfonium or arsonium compound use at least one reducible nitro, Has quinone, carbonyl, nitrose, azoxy, azo or nitrile group. These reducible groups should serve to remove the electrolytically evolving hydrogen.
It is also known to add reducible compounds to the operating electrolyte (GB-PS 9 79 024; GB-PS 10 58 252; U.S. Patent 33 31 002). There are listed organic compounds that have one or more oxime groups, e.g. B. quinone dioxime possess. Furthermore, organic compounds with nitro, azo or quinone groups or inorganic compounds, such as iron (III) chloride and potassium permanganate. More information about additional amounts, type of The related operating electrolytes and the effect of the additives on the conductivity are the stated status not to be found in the technology.
The object of the invention is to provide an electrolytic capacitor indicate that circumvents the difficulties listed above and in particular the electrolytic and chemically generated hydrogen does not rupture the housing.
In the case of the electrolytic capacitor specified at the outset, this object is achieved according to the invention in that that the electrolyte up to 1.0 wt .-% 1,4-Benzochi-

Zweckmäßige Ausgestaltungen sind in den Unteranspriichen angegeben.Appropriate refinements are set out in the subclaims specified.
The addition of 1,4-benzoquinone binds the electrolytically and chemically produced Hydrogen without impairing the electrical values of the operating electrolyte used he follows. 1,4-benzoquinone is also distinguished by the fact that it is used in electrolytic capacitor construction does not attack the materials used.
Although it is from DE-AS 19 32 233 the use of 1,4-benzoquinone in amounts of 10 to 20 wt .-% known, but the application relates to anhydrous electrolytes. It has 1,4-benzoquinone the task of converting the reduced form of the organic ionogen back to the active acid form to accomplish. An indication that the 1,4-benzoquinone has hydrogen-binding properties and The publication does not indicate that it is suitable for use in operating electrolytes containing water. in the Otherwise, the 1,4-benzoquinone is very sparingly soluble in water, so that this additive to water-containing Beliebselcktrolyten is not suggested by this publication either.

Curve 1 shows the amount of gas which is formed in the operating electrolyte based on glycol borate with additions of water. Curves 2, 3, 4 and 5 show the amounts of gas produced with additions of 0.02% by weight, 0.1% by weight, 0.25% by weight and 0.5% by weight 1.4 -Bcnzoquinone. The figure clearly shows that the additives mentioned cause a significantly reduced evolution of gas.
35 mm in diameter and 85 mm long). Those with the above-mentioned operating electrolytes and an addition of 0.5 wt .-% 1,4-benzoquinone impregnated wraps were in the housing with Asphall encapsulated (for winding attachment) and sealed.
Die Figur zeigt,Then one of the two electrical connections on the cover plate was drilled through and a copper tube with a matching external thread was screwed on tightly. The escaping gas was collected in measuring cylinders over a pneumatic tub and measured. Curve I shows the dependence of the amount of gas V evolved on the time t when the condensers are placed in a controlled heat bath heated to 85 ° C. For comparison, the amount of gas Vauch was measured on capacitors without the addition of 1,4-benzoquinone (curve 2). Curves 1 and 2 reach a plateau after about an hour, which is caused by the thermal expansion of the empty volumes in the condenser housings. This plateau is at different levels depending on the degree of filling with potting compound. The figure shows
