Advantageous embodiments of the invention are in the sub- ; claims laid down.
According to the present invention there is provided an ink for the ink jet printing process. The ink is essentially a water-based ink 3 but the coloring ingredient used therein is a water-insoluble dye. The dye is dissolved in a water immiscible solvent and a complexing agent is applied so that the water immiscible solvent and the water form a single phase. The complexing agent comprises the diethanolamine or triethanolamine salt of a long chain fatty acid and an aromatic anionic wetting agent. The use of the complexing agent results in solutions of or in water which are as clear as water and not milky like emulsions. The exact mechanism of the ■ water solubilization of solvents which are normally immiscible with water is not known.

In order to avoid undesirable pressure losses in the nozzle! The ink must have a low viscosity (about 2 cSt at 10 ° C.). It is essential r that the ink is non-toxic and non-flammable. It must also be compatible with numerous plastic parts in the ink delivery system. Finally, the cost of their production must be economically justifiable. The requirements listed above inevitably lead to a water-based ink. However, this water-based ink must have the additional capabilities of being able to transfer the ink onto the paper, of drying relatively quickly and of forming an image which is insensitive to water. In addition, the ink must act as a carrier for various additives such as dye solubilizers and bio-oils. Because of the nature of the ink jet printing process, soluble dyes are the only satisfactory method of transferring color to paper and forming images. When a water soluble dye is used, evaporation of the water often causes clogging and encrustation of the nozzle at the nozzle-air interface .
The aforementioned and other problems are addressed by the present Invention solved, by which an ink for the inkjet printing process is provided on an aqueous basis, which contains a dye which is insoluble in water per se, but not soluble in water in conjunction with one with water miscible solvents for this dye and a complexing agent of the type described below.
Wenn esMany water-insoluble dyes are known which can be used in the present invention. If also black dyes are preferred for common uses, other dyes can also be used if desired will. The dye should preferably be stable to the action of light and should not tend to aggregate. If it

(CI. 26 150). Andere brauchbare Farbstoffe sind beispielsweise CI. Solvent Black 2 (Monoazofarbstoff) , CI. Solvent Blue 11 (CI. 61 525), CI. Solvent Blue 49 (Aminsalz eines Säurefarbstoffs), CI. Solvent Brown 11 (Azofarbstoff) , CI. Solvent Green 3 (CI. 61 565) und CI. Solvent Red 26 (CI. 26 120).If desired, infrared or ultraviolet absorbing dyes can be used. It is also very desirable that the After drying, the dye is stable on the paper and ins-; especially that the dye is insensitive to water. The dye, the most preferred is C.I. Solvent Black 9 ! (CI. 26 150). Other useful dyes are, for example, CI. Solvent Black 2 (monoazo dye), CI. Solvent Blue 11 (CI. 61 525), CI. Solvent Blue 49 (amine salt of an acid dye), CI. Solvent Brown 11 (azo dye), CI. Solvent Green 3 (CI. 61 565) and CI. Solvent Red 26 (CI. 26 120).
Hydrocarbons are mentioned as particularly suitable water-immiscible solvents. For reasons that are not clear, the best results will not be obtained when the hydrocarbon solvent is completely aromatic. In other words, the hydrocarbon solvent should preferably be substantially aliphatic in character. The standard used in industry as a measure of the aromatic character of a solvent is the kauri-butanol value. For the purposes of the present invention it is preferred if the solvent has a kauri-butanol value of about 22 to about 29. It is also advantageous if the hydrocarbon boils in a range between about 199 ° C. (390 ° F.) to about 254 ° C. (490 ° F.). Other useful water-immiscible solvents include, for example, octylene glycol, mineral oil, pine oil, and the like.
Eine bevorzugte Zusammensetzung des Komplexbildners umfaßt zwei wesentliche Bestandteile:An essential component of the ink compositions according to the invention is the complexing agent, which enables that the end product is only present in a single phase. A preferred composition of the complexing agent comprises two essentials Components:
The diethanolamine or triethanolamine salt of a long-chain fatty acid (preferably from about C-10 to about C-22) and

For reasons unknown, useful results are not obtained using a sodium alkyl sulfonate. The sulfonate must be either a sodium alkylarylsulfonate or a sodium diarylsulfonate, oleic acid is the most common fatty acid preferred.
In general, the ink composition should contain about 1 to 5% by weight of dye, 1 to 10% by weight of water-immiscible solvent, about 1 to 25% by weight of complexing agent and the remainder are water. An amine salt to wetting agent ratio of about 2: 1 to 1: 1 is used for the complexing agent preferred. The optimal proportions of the individual components are a function of the individual materials used.
The order in which the ingredients of the composition are mixed is not critical. Satisfactory results are obtained in any of the various methods. So can For example, the complexing agent is first mixed with the water-immiscible solvent and then the dye is added will. This mixture is then added to water to obtain the ink. Another suitable alternative is the water-immiscible solvent and the dye to mix, then add the complexing agent and finally the water while maintaining the final composition.
Solvent Black 9, CI. 26 150) gemischt.A complexing agent was prepared by reacting 25 g of oleic acid with 37-1 / 2 g of triethanolamine and adding 37-1 / 2 g of sodium alkylarylsulfonate.
