Description
Measuring device for determining the magnetic susceptibility of mixtures of substances, in particular mixtures of gases.
The state of the art can be found in the manual "Measurement and Control in Chemical Technology" (1). Furthermore are mentioned: the US patent specification 2416344 (2), the German Offenlegungsschriften 1951342 (3) and 2ooo21Z (4), as well as a report by Munday (5).
The disadvantage of the known methods is that they can be used either as a knockout method (with the associated disadvantages of the Dependence of the measured value on the operating conditions of the apparatus, field strength, field gradient, degree of amplification, etc.) or that in the arrangements with the compensation method (e.g. according to Munday (5)) the zero point of the measurement is still in strong Measures through changes in field strength (?. .B, through aging, through Temperature change or due to other circumstances) will. Furthermore, the presentation of a test specimen with a current loop and power supply is a very technical aspect in terms of production difficult problem, especially in the serial production of devices.
It has now been found that the above. Disadvantages with the- ~ Ingenious method can be avoided and think about it there are also some important advantages. With the help of the according to the invention Arrangement succeeds ^ the measurement of the susceptibility of gas mixtures in a practice that meets the requirements to be carried out in an appropriate manner.
The arrangement according to the invention can be characterized by the following points:
1. Es sind zwei Magnetkreise vorhanden.1. There are two magnetic circuits.
Two specimens of the same type as possible are arranged in the two measuring gaps (claims 1 and 2) or the two
Probekörper besitzen die gleiche integrale Volumensuszeptibilität (Anspruch 3)Test specimens have the same integral volume susceptibility (claim 3)
The two test specimens are expediently in similar field areas arranged.
The two test specimens are mechanically into a rigid structure (Dumbbell) connected.
The test specimens are open vessels β, one of which is intended to hold the test sample (claim 1) -or
5b die Prpbekörper sind Hohlkörper, von denen der eine das Meß-· gas und der andere ein abgeschlossenes Vergleichsgas enthält (Anspruch 2) - oder5b the specimens are hollow bodies, one of which is the measuring gas and the other contains a closed reference gas (claim 2) - or
5c die Probekörper sind Verdrängungskörper von unterschiedlicher Größe, so daß durch sie unterschiedlichen Meßgasvolumina verdrängt werden (Anspruch 3),.5c the specimens are displacement bodies of different sizes, so that they displace different measurement gas volumes be (claim 3) ,.
The arrangement and fastening of the dumbbell is chosen in such a way that the forces split with the same field strength in the measurement or the torques that are caused by the solid substance the porous body have, cancel. Then only the forces or torques remain effective that result from the magnetic effect of the additional test sample (claim

bzw. Abb. 7). or Fig. 8-125 a) or resulting from the susceptibility difference between the measurement gas and the reference gas result (claim 2) or which result from the magnetic effect of the difference between the displaced measurement gas volumes (claim 3 or Fig. 7).
By choosing a suitable material for the porous body ensured that the magnetic effect (force) on the individual Specimen is larger than the magnetic effect on the additional test sample (claim 1) or on the one with openings provided measuring gas sample hollow body contained measuring gas (claim 2) or on the measuring gas displaced by the larger specimen (claim 3). The balance of power sqll for example be Io to loo for greatest magnetic effect occurring in the respective measuring range for the measuring sample or for the measuring gas.
8. If points 1 to 7 are fulfilled, a term sense and made in the correct size change of the magnetic field in the measuring columns the forces (or their effects) on the The mass of the test specimen is used to compensate for the forces (or their effects) in the magnetic field on the test sample or the measurement gas be exercised. This is done via a scanning device for the dumbbell position (e.g. optical rotating mirror scanning with a photo cell and amplifier) and by feeding back the amplifier output signal (with appropriate consideration of phase position and polarity) to change the field excitation by means of one or two compensation windings.
The current through the compensation windings is then a measure of the susceptibility to be measured of the test sample or the test gas.
Dies bringt die folgenden bedeutsamen Vorteile:The essence of the inventive idea lies in the fact that the Susceptibility of the measurement gas (or the susceptibility difference between measurement and reference gas) or of the measurement sample with the constant Susceptibility of the test specimen is compared. This brings the following significant advantages:
Attaching power leads and power loops to the metrological the most sensitive part can be omitted (compare reference no. 5). This is from manufacturing engineering and Corrosion protection reasons of considerable advantage. Furthermore, the risk of electrical overloading of the measuring system becomes practical eliminated. This also has a favorable effect on the measuring device with regard to a frequently required explosion protection.
As both for the magnetic effect on the test specimen as well for the magnetic effect on the test sample or on the gas to be measured contained in the hollow test body or on the gas displaced by the test body Measuring gas the product of field strength and field gradient is decisive, have uniform changes in magnetic induction (and associated changes in field strength and field gradient) in the Measuring gaps (e.g. due to temperature or age) only one comparatively very little influence on the balance status and therefore also on the measurement result. As a comparison, here is the dumbbell model (after Pauling) with attached compensation loop (after Munday (5)) called. Here, the compensation force is due to the current flowing through it Loop proportional to the field gradient (independent of the field strength), whereas the force on the displaced measuring gas is proportional to the product of field strength and field gradient.

An Hand der Abb. Ι-δ^ιίη folgenden Ausführungsforraen der Erfindung erläutert.Using the Fig. Ι-δ ^ ιίη the following embodiments of the invention explained.
Quarz) bestehen. The arrangement of Fig. 1 consists of 2 ferromagnetic yokes 1 and 2 with measuring gaps 3 and 4 and specimens 5 and 6. The latter are hollow bodies (e.g. hollow spheres or flat hollow cylinders) each with a gas chamber. The test gas specimen 5 contains small openings which are used for gas exchange with the test gas (M). Of the Comparison test specimen 6 is closed and contains a comparison gas (V) or it is evacuated. Apart from this difference should be as similar as possible for *** specimens and consist of one Material with low susceptibility (e.g. quartz).
The coils 7 to 12 are located on the magnet yokes 1 and 2. The coil pairs 7, 8 or 9, Io or 11, 12 should each be as possible be the same, with pairs 9, Io and 11, 12 generally being one in comparison to the pair 7, 8 have a low number of turns. About the constant current sources 13 and 14, the coils are in such Vieise supplied with direct current that the fields of the main coils 7 and 8 are rectified, -T * and the fields of the adjustment coils 11 and 12 * Vemander opposite -e-irfttä. The power source 14 is adjustable and possibly reversible for the purpose of field adjustment. the Test specimens 3 and 4 together with the connecting web 15 form a Dumbbell-shaped structure which is attached to the torsion thread 16 (attachments 17 and 18). In the middle the dumbbell carries a mirror 19, in connection with the light source 2o, the optics not shown (light beam is indicated by a dashed line) and the dual photo element differential array 21; Position of the dumbbell. The signal U> (. Of the light receiver 21 is in Amplifier 22 amplifies and.! Supplies a direct output current i2, that by the coils 9 and Io and the display instrument lying in series 23 flows. The coils 9 and Io (compensation coils) must be switched so that their action on the main field of the main coils 7. and 8 are in opposite directions. The measuring column 3 and 4 as well as the dumbbell system 5,6, 16-19 are not shown by one gas-tight chamber through which the measuring gas (M) is passed, enclosed.
Die damit verknüpfte Drehung der Hantel ändert die Ausleuchtung der Photozellen, es entsteht ein Signal UlTo explain the mode of operation of the arrangement, let it be assumed that the measurement gas consists of a gas of negligible magnetic susceptibility, for example nitrogen, and that the specimen 6 also contains nitrogen. (The diamagnetism of nitrogen should not be taken into account here). The field effective as a result of the current through 7 and 8 in the measuring gap then exerts a force on the specimen consisting of, for example, sv / ei se diamagnetic q £ & a , which forces them out of the field. There. the forces are equal, the torque acting on the dumbbell is zero. The half then adjusts to such a position of equilibrium that the current i2 also becomes zero. This setting is practically ensured because of the high amplification of the optical-electrical scanning. If an O 2 -containing measurement gas is now introduced, (eg Io % 02) #, a torque occurs which pulls the test specimen 5 into the field. The associated rotation of the dumbbell changes the illumination of the photocells, a signal Ul is generated
Bei diesem System .·'■ -'" . stellt sich dann ein Gleichgewicht ein zwischen dem Drehmoment, dasand as a consequence the current χ2τ which the field in the measuring columns 3 and 4 changed so that the torque on the diamagnetic body is no longer zero and is directed so that the called rotation is reversed. In this system. · '■ -' ". An equilibrium is then established between the torque that

Mit dieser Maßnahme können Unsymetrien in Magnetspulen oder an der Hantel ausgeglichen werden oder gewünschte Meßbereichunterdruckungen (z.B. für einen (^-Meßbereich von 8-lo % O2) vorgenommen werden.as a result of the field force on the paramagnetic gas to be measured in the test gas specimen 5 and the torque that arises at different field strengths in the measuring gaps as a result of the different forces on the diamagnetic substance of the test specimen. The test body substance may also be paramagnetic. Then the difference in identity must be reversed. The position or angular position of the dumbbell is practically independent of the oxygen content of the measuring gas because of the high optical-electrical amplifier setting used. The design of such scanning systems is part of the state of the art. The systems have proven themselves in practice (see reference (1) in the literature). For the above equilibrium, the current i2 is proportional to the O 2 content of the measuring gas and thus a measure of its content. In the arrangement just described the magnetic "volume susceptibility of the solid body substance of the test specimen is compared with the volume susceptibility of the measuring gas inside the measuring gas specimen (5). The task of the adjustment coils 11 and 12 is to adjust the field strengths in the measuring gaps in connection with the controllable direct current source 14 so that for the desired zero point of the system (generally for the O ^ content zero), the torque acting on the dumbbell is exactly zero. With this measure, asymmetries in magnet coils or on the dumbbell can be compensated or desired measurement range suppressions (e.g. for a ( ^ -Measuring range of 8-10 % O2).
2 and 3 there are two fundamentally different embodiments a for measuring gap and specimen. Both measuring columns and both specimens (apart from <| en openings in the measuring gas specimen) are the same, only one gap and one specimen are shown for the sake of simplicity. The double arrow indicates here the direction of movement of the specimen. In Fig. 2, a parallel slit 32 and a flat .primula » c cylindrical hollow body 33 worked. The order 3 has a measuring gap 42 with beveled pole pieces 41 and a spherical hollow body 43.
The scanning of the angular position of the dumbbell can of course also be used other than optical means. So can on a bar that is perpendicular to the suspension and perpendicular to the dumbbell axis attached, a thin metal or plastic flag is attached be. This flag is perpendicular to the axis of rotation and moves in a differential plate capacitor, the plates of which are also perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The differential capacitor is part of a Bridge arrangement * symmetrically fed with high frequency voltage (HF voltage) then in a known manner. the "angular position of the Dumbbell gain corresponding measurement signal that after amplification and Rectification similar to that described above can be used to feed the compensation winding.
Rohrbach manual for electrical measurement of mechanical quantities VDI publishers 1967).
The specimen is embodied as a flat prismatic hollow body.
In Fig. 5c is one of the arrangement of Fig. 5a and 5b corresponding Execution with cylindrical sample hollow body 77 'or 81' shown. The cylinder axis is perpendicular to the field direction and parallel to the direction of movement. The direction of movement is always indicated in the figures and also in the following by the double arrow.
The prismatic or cylindrical specimens shown in Fig. 5 differ from the bodies shown in Figs. 2 and 3 very advantageously in that the forces on the specimen are independent of the dumbbell position in a larger angular range are. This has the advantage that the optical-electrical amplification in the examples mentioned (or in general the Sampling amplification) in the feedback system (negative feedback by means of the compensation coils) can be kept comparatively much smaller. This advantage is achieved because of the prismatic (cylindrical) shape of the test specimen for a larger Range of motion (angular range) the solid body volume and the Void volume in the area of the inhomogeneous zone remains constant. The cylindrical test specimen also has the advantage of that with the same mechanical strength of the test hollow body the ratio of solid volume to cavity volume in the range of inhomogeneous zone has a minimal value compared to other hollow body shapes. This finding also applies in comparison to Hollow sphere.
In the above-mentioned exemplary embodiments, the rotatable dumbbell system can in principle be designed as a system without directional force, but in general, in order to obtain a defined equilibrium position of the system in the non-returned state, the system is executed with directional force. In addition, to achieve resonance peaks, it can be advantageous to choose the straightening force (by choosing an appropriate torsion spring) so that a desired resonance frequency is achieved in connection with the moment of inertia of the dumbbell.

Fig. 6a shows an arrangement that works with a linearly oscillating test specimen (dumbbell) system. In the exemplary embodiment, the mechanical position or the oscillation is scanned with a magneto-inductive system. In two magnet yokes 91 and 92, a magnetic flux of animals is generated by means of the excitation coils 97 and 98 and the alternating current source lol. The yokes contain the measuring column 93 and 94 with the measuring gas sample body 95 with openings and the reference gas sample body 96 (closed). The test specimens are connected to form a dumbbell, which is fastened to the holder Io2 so that it can vibrate via the bending fields Io3. The double arrow indicates the direction of oscillation. The magnetic bar Io4 is attached to the dumbbell and can swing in front of the inductive pick-up head Io5. If there is vibration, the pick-up head Io5 delivers an alternating current signal. This signal is amplified in VJe ch be voltage amplifier Io6, halved in frequency in frequency divider Io7 and converted in phase shifter loO into an in-phase compensation alternating current i \ . The current i \ runs through the compensation coils 99 and loo and the display instrument Io9. When using diamagnetic test specimens, the coil 99 is wound in such a way that the compensation current amplifies the alternating field in the gap 93, while the direction of winding for the coil is reversed With the information given, the function of the arrangement according to Fig. 6a is otherwise completely analogous to that of the arrangement in Fig. 1. Fig. 6b shows an appropriate pole shoe shape in connection with cylindrical test specimens.
7 and 8 two other arrangements are shown which apart on the shape of the test specimen and the shape of the measuring gap in the electro-mechanical Structure corresponds to Fig. 6a. Of the magnetic circuits, only the pole shoes 111 and 112 or 121 and shown. The specimens 115 and 116 or 125 and 126 are located in the measuring gaps 113 and 114 or 123 and 124. The test specimen arrangement (dumbbell) connected to form a rigid unit is fastened to the fastening via the spiral spring 117 (127) 118 (123).
In Fig. 7, the measuring gap is charged with the measuring gas in in the same way as box in Fig. 1-6. The execution of the test specimen however, differs from those shown earlier. The specimen 115 is a solid sphere, the specimen £ \ a = hollow sphere. Both bodies consist of the same material (e.g. quartz) and have the same mass of solid substance.
If the two test specimens, as provided in the arrangement, are in an area with the same field strength and the same field gradient, the forces acting on the solid substance cancel each other out. The two test specimens have different volumes, for example 1 mm 3 (for 115) and 5 mm 3 (for 116). According to the displaced volume of measuring gas and. its O2 concentration therefore has additional forces that force the balls out of the field. The difference between these forces remains effective, which corresponds to the difference between the displacement volumes (5 ram 3 - 1 mm 3 = 4 mra 3 ) and the O2 content of the measuring gas. The measurement of this differential force, which is a measure of the O2 content to be measured in the gas to be measured (or its susceptibility), is now carried out, as explained earlier, with the aid of a compensation current by a

In Fig. 7a there is a variant corresponding to Fig. 7 with parallel Measuring columns 113 'and 114' (pole pairs 111 'and 112') in which, as indicated, have a cylindrical rod 115 'or a hollow cylinder 116 * are located. The cross-sections of these two specimens are chosen so that in this case Inhomogeneity zone that is expediently kept small has the same cross-sections (and thus also the same volumes) of the test specimens made from the same material. The function of this arrangement results from the explanations given so far.
In another embodiment, which corresponds to Fig. 7a, prismatic test specimens (a prismatic rod and a prismatic hollow body), in which the in the previous paragraph Cross-sectional conditions must be met ^, used.
Mit der Anordnung nach Abb. 8 wird nicht die Suszeptibilität eines Meßgases sondern die Suszeptibilität einer vergleichsweiseWith the arrangement according to Fig. 8, it is not the susceptibility of a measuring gas but the susceptibility of a comparative gas
kleinen flüssigen oder festen Meßprobe 125 a gemessen. There is no need to charge the system with measuring gas. The gaps of the magnets intended u "be filled with a gas low susceptibility. For not too small susceptibilities of the sample 125 a fill gas may be air. If necessary to take into account the known susceptibility value of the air in the evaluation of the measurement. The sample body (for example, made of quartz) are designed as open vessels *
The body 115 serves to receive the test sample 125 a. The solid volume of the test specimen may be, for example, 60 mm 3 (corresponding to a hollow sphere half with a wall thickness of 8 mm and 0.4 mm). They have a measurable susceptibility of 3.1o ~ 6 (susceptibility of quartz approx. L.lo ~ °). Then, for a sample of 2mnrt &'ti. Volume susceptibility product of 6.1o ~ 6 nmr * compared to the value of 6o.lö ~ ^ mm for the test specimen. The required magnetic compensation excitation can then be calculated as explained below. Conversely, the volume susceptibility (or the mass susceptibility) can be calculated from the compensation excitation (compensation current times *: number of turns of the compensation coil) for an unknown sample of known volume (or known mass).
The inherent property of the method according to the invention, the high response speed, is in the arrangements in which the gas exchange through small openings in the sample gas - body (hollow body) takes place, limited by the time required for gas exchange. To remedy this deficiency, one uses hollow bodies with large openings, which are dimensioned in such a way that that the same integral volume susceptibility exists as with the comparison hollow body. This happens, for example, with a cylindrical measuring gas sample hollow body, in that the bottom and cover are omitted and the cylinder wall is reinforced accordingly. In the case of the arrangements with a parallel measuring gap and a narrow inhomogeneity zone, it is only necessary that both specimens coincide in the area of the inhomogeneous zone, outside In this zone, the measuring gas sample hollow body can be provided with large openings for the measurement without interference.
