Abstract
Description
The present invention is concerned with an eigenwave selective directional coupler consisting of two parallel waveguides, which are coupled to one another through holes in the common wall, of only one natural wave of the second waveguide with the fundamental wave of the first waveguide depending on the direction are coupled, wherein the first waveguide has a rectangular cross section and with a second Waveguide is coupled with a round cross-section.
The term »directional coupler« is understood to mean arrangements that allow energy to be conducted Power can be taken which, depending on the installation direction, ends in proportion to the forward or reverse that occurs Ladder waves are. The reflection factor can then be obtained directly from the comparison of two such performances indicate. The directional ratio is used to characterize the performance of a directional coupler, d. H. the quotient of the forward and backward voltage with a completely reflection-free termination of the Power line. It is generally given in dB and allows a statement to be made about which smallest reflection coefficient can still be measured with certainty. The »decoupling attenuation« indicates the size of the available decoupled power.
In general, efforts are made to create directional couplers as broadband as possible in order to have a large one To record the frequency range. In particular, however, selective directional couplers are used, particularly in the GHz range required, whereby a power line is only designed for one frequency.
Fig. 1 der Zeichnung). These so-called eigenwave-selective directional couplers also consist of two parallel arranged Waveguides, which in this case are coupled through holes in the common wall (see Fig. 1 the drawing). In this case, only the fundamental wave should be used in one of the two waveguides 1 in the working frequency range Be capable of propagation, while in the other waveguide 2 several natural waves capable of propagation are, of which only one - the useful wave of the waveguide 2 - with the fundamental or useful wave of the Waveguide 1 should be coupled. Due to this property is an eigenwave-selective directional coupler for direction-dependent excitation or decoupling of a very specific natural wave in the waveguide 2, for which the coupler is dimensioned to use, while other eigenwaves of the waveguide 2 are generally only weakly disturbed by the coupler.
Um eine optimale Kopplung zwischen den beiden Nutzwellen zu erhalten, mußIn order to obtain an optimal coupling between the two useful waves, must

b) die effektiven Phasengeschwindigkeiten der beiden Nutzwellen gleich sein.b) the effective phase velocities of the two useful waves are the same.
Since there is a phase jump at every single hole for the waveguide natural waves, the effective phase velocity of a natural wave from the undisturbed phase velocity due to the Hollow out dimensions and a disturbance as a result the hole effect together.

Zur Verwirklichung der obigen Forderung für diese Störwellen läßt sich die TatsacheJo gene waves of the waveguide 2 often realize through a clever choice of coupling (arrangement of holes). However, this possibility does not exist for some "interfering waves". To achieve the above Requirement for these interference waves can be the fact

c) die benötigte minimale Koppellänge des Richtkopplers, um eine bestimmte Selektivität des Kopplers gegenüber Störwellen zu erhalten.c) the required minimum coupling length of the directional coupler to achieve a certain selectivity of the Coupler to get against interfering waves.
Of the three dimensioning conditions a), b) and c), condition b) is the most difficult to meet. Since the normalized field strengths of the two useful waves at the location of the holes are generally strong are different, is also the influence on the effective phase velocities of the two useful waves different strength through the holes. In addition, this influence is due to the size of the required Holes can only be calculated very imprecisely, while the coupling between the useful waves is still relatively can be calculated exactly. It is therefore practically impossible to use the directional coupler in the first place to dimension that condition b) is met; So there must be coordination options for subsequent Change in the phase velocity of one of the useful waves can be provided. These have been so far dielectric inserts are used, which are subsequently inserted into the rectangular waveguide 1. This method can be used with all types of coupler according to FIG. 1; but it seems to be very difficult to manufacture and use these inserts so that they can be moved continuously, are stable and free of reflections.
Es besteht deshalb die Aufgabe, diesen erkannten Mangel zu beseitigen und eine Abstimmöglichkeit zurThere is therefore the task of eliminating this recognized deficiency and providing an opportunity for coordination

You can use the Connect the rectangular waveguide with its narrow or wide side to the second waveguide. For certain For wave types, coupling with the wide waveguide side is essential.
Based on the drawing, the invention is based on a Embodiment explained in more detail.
In der Fig. 1 sind Ausführungsformen von eigenwellenselektiven Richtkopplern im Querschnitt abgebildet; In Fig. 1, embodiments of eigenwave-selective directional couplers are shown in cross section;
und oie Fig. 2 zeigt den erfindungsgemäßen Abgleich an einem im Querschnitt dargestellten Richtkoppler. and FIG. 2 shows the adjustment according to the invention on a directional coupler shown in cross section.
In Fig. 1, different cross-sectional shapes of eigenwave-selective directional couplers are shown. In the waveguides 1 of FIGS. A, b, c only the fundamental waves are capable of propagation, while in the Waveguides 2 of this figure are capable of propagating several natural waves. But only one, namely the useful wave of the waveguide 2 should be able to be coupled to the fundamental wave or useful wave of the waveguide 1. on The reason for this condition is an eigenwave-selective directional coupler for direction-dependent excitation or Decoupling of a very specific natural wave in the waveguide 2, for which the coupler is dimensioned is to use. The three Fig. A, b, c are as directional couplers assigned to specific waveforms.
In Fig. A, the directional coupler is used to couple Η waves in and out in the circular waveguide,
Auskopplung von Ε-Wellen statt undin Fig. b there is a coupling in and out of Ε waves and
Due to the in-phase coupling at 45 °, the H ^ 1 wave, which is almost degenerate with the H 12 wave, is suppressed in the circular waveguide
For H-couplers (for the excitation of Η-waves in the circular waveguide) according to Fig. 1a and 1c, respectively Therefore, a process has been found here that results in a continuous change in the otherwise final coupler the rectangular waveguide width and thus the phase velocity of the rectangular waveguide wave allowed. For this purpose, the narrow side wall of the rectangular waveguide opposite the row of holes is as thin bronze foil formed over a stiff steel wire with the help of several, over the coupler length distributed screws can be pressed into the waveguide (see Fig. 2).
In this way, various directional couplers were produced, of which a broadband coupler for the excitation and decoupling of the H 02 wave in the circular waveguide is to be described in more detail here, because it illustrates the need for a good tuning process. The final dimensions and properties of this coupler can be seen in FIG.
The circular waveguide of FIG. 2 is designated with position 1, whose wall thickness is so dimensioned that it can also accommodate the rectangular waveguide 2.
Between the two waveguides 1 and 2, the hole coupling 3 is arranged, which consists of several, in perpendicular to the image plane arranged holes, the size and distance of which determines the coupling for the Directional coupler is. The waveguide side 4 opposite the coupling holes is designed like a membrane and consists of a resilient foil, which is preferably made of bronze. About the Waveguide side 4, a cover 5 is placed, which with rneh-
The tuning itself takes place by means of tuning screws 7, which press against the membrane-like waveguide side 4 via a steel wire 8 and thus change the effective width of the waveguide 2. This change enables broadband adaptation of the effective phase velocities of the fundamental wave of the rectangular waveguide and the useful wave of the circular waveguide.
The coupler should work in the frequency range from 27 to 38 GHz with a coupling attenuation between the useful waves that is as constant as possible. In order to obtain a reasonably good selectivity for the H ° 22 wave (critical interfering wave), a relatively long coupling path had to be chosen. This selectivity could be improved somewhat by increasing the difference in phase velocity between the rectangular waveguide wave and the H ° 22 wave as much as possible. But then the phase velocities of the two useful waves could no longer be exactly the same, which resulted in a strong frequency dependency of the coupling between the useful waves, which could, however, be compensated for by the opposite frequency dependence of the coupling of the individual holes. This mode of operation required that the phase velocity of the rectangular waveguide wave had to be set very precisely. According to a very simple calculation, the tolerance of the rectangular waveguide width during manufacture should have been less than 0.05 mm, if not the
The optimal one Rectangular waveguide width is also dependent on the hole diameter, and because to achieve Good selectivity holes of different diameters had to be used, the rectangular waveguide width had to be used can be changed as a function of the longitudinal coordinate of the coupler.
Furthermore, since the influence of the relatively large coupling holes on the effective phase velocity only with An accuracy could be determined that a calculation of the required rectangular waveguide width only possible with an inaccuracy of about 0.2 mm, this coupler could with its good Properties can only be created with the help of the calibration device described.
The application of this process enables the production of wide-wall couplers with low, constant frequency coupling attenuation between the fundamental wave of the rectangular waveguide and the Useful wave of the circular waveguide as well as with high head
