Furan resins are condensation products that are a) obtained from furfuryl alcohol in the presence of acids, optionally with the addition of furfural or b) from furfural and Carbonyl compounds in the presence of basic catalysts, preferably with further admixing of hydrocarbons with one or more - preferably up to three - activated Has received double bonds. In reaction a) that in the lining of containers a considerable better sealing of the masonry is achieved.
S ; e preferably have an average molecular weight of 500 to 2000, in particular 600 to 1500. The proportion of carboxyl groups or the corresponding anhydride groups can vary. In general, an average of 0.08 to 0.9
erfolgt die Kondensation in saurem Medium, z. B. in 40 Carboxylgruppen, gegebenenfalls in Form der Carbon-the condensation takes place in an acidic medium, e.g. B. in 40 carboxyl groups, optionally in the form of the carbon
B. Cyclopentadien, Dicyclopentadien, Inden, Fulven, 1,4-Hexadien, 5-Methylnorbornen. Presence of catalytic amounts of dilute Sulfuric acid. Such condensates can also be used together with furfuryl alcohol or mixtures of Apply furfuryl alcohol and furfurol. In reaction b) one works in general under the Aldol condensation conditions, e.g. B. in the presence of a mixture of sodium hydroxide solution with sodium acetate or sodium phosphate. As carbonyl compounds are, for. B. aldehydes, such as acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, Butyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, 0-phenylacetaldehyde, Acrolein and ketones such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone. Diisobutyl ketone and acetophenone called. Hydrocarbons with activated double bonds are z. B. Cyclopentadiene, Dicyclopentadiene, Indene, fulvene, 1,4-hexadiene, 5-methylnorbornene.
Preferably such olefin-carboxylic acid telomers are especially styrene maleic anhydride telomers used, the molar ratio of carboxylic acid: olefin of 1: 0.5 to 1:20, preferably 1: 1 to 1: 8 The following telomers may be mentioned as examples of suitable starting materials: 1) those made from styrene ι ο and maleic anhydride (molar ratio 1: 1.2: 1.3: 1, 5: 1.8: 1), 2) those made from octene and maleic anhydride (Molar ratio 1: 1), 3) those made from styrene and aryl acid (Molar ratio 1: 1), and 4) those made from styrene, vinyl toluene and maleic anhydride (molar ratio 1: 1: 2, 1: 1: 1.3: 1: 2), those mentioned under 1 and 2 are particularly preferred.
The copolymer generally also contains cumene or cymene as telogen, but possibly also other telogens such as p-xyloI or the other xylenes or isomer mixtures of xylenes, toluene, benzene, chloroform, methyl ethyl ketone or diisobutyl ketone.
The telogen content can be up to about 35, preferably 5 to 25, in particular up to 20% by weight of the copolymer turn off. In many cases, the optimal content depends on the desired molecular weight of the Polymerizates and the chemical character of the telogen varies. Examples are copolymers with an average molecular weight of about 600 to 700 and a telogen content of about 15 to 18% by weight and those with an average molecular weight of about 1000 to 1500 and one Telogen content of up to 5% by weight is well suited. In general, one gets at a lower one Molecular weight have a higher proportion of telogen and vice versa.
The copolymers can be prepared in various known ways. In the interpolymerization, e.g. B. in solvents usually is carried out at reaction temperatures of about 150 0 C, is heated, the solvent is generally from 170 to 22O 0 C. Then the olefinically unsaturated monomers, e.g. B. styrene and maleic anhydride and a peroxide added as initiator. The copolymer formed is obtained by precipitation or by distilling off the solvent. The abovementioned telogens can be used as solvents.
When processing the copolymers with a combination of I) furan resin and II) furfuryl alcohol or mixtures of furfuryl alcohol and furfurol is the weight ratio between the components 1) and II) generally between 10: 1 and 0.5: 1, preferably between 4: 1 and 1: 1. If furfurol is also used, its part by weight should not be higher than 50, suitably not more than 35% by weight of the furan resin and generally not more than 50% by weight, preferably not less than 35% by weight, of the furfuryl alcohol.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, acid-curing furan resins can also be used under generate and cure under the conditions of shaping from furfuryl alcohol and optionally furfurol. This has the advantage that the furan resins no longer need to be produced beforehand. Such resins show only a slight shrinkage in addition to the inherently good resistance. In relation to Acid resistance, however, they are surpassed by the products that have an already pre-condensed Contain furan resin. In all cases, however, the incorporation of the copolymers is achieved through use favored by furfuryl alcohol and possibly furfurol because they are soluble in these substances are.
Man can also produce test specimens for orientational experiments in which z. B. square tiles the Edge length 7 cm and a thickness of 15 mm are used and which have a total length of 31 cm hereinafter referred to as small format body
For exact measurements, 8 so-called ceramic split plates with a thickness of 25 mm and 110 mm are laid Edge length in a 10 mm thick putty bed with 10 mm thick butt joints (in the following as a large format body designated).
The cement bed is applied to a film to which the cement does not adhere, so that the movability of the cement bed is not impaired. Shrinkage causes this 1 m long beam to bulge. The maximum bulge of the plate beam in mm is taken as the shrinkage measure. The plate bar is stored for 5 days at room temperature, then for 16 hours at 50 0 C and then for several days at 6O 0 C. The measurement is always carried out in a warm state.
The progress made by the invention is demonstrated by the experimental results shown in Table 1 illustrated. The resin solution mentioned therein is a furan resin obtained by self-condensation of 70 parts by weight of furfuryl alcohol in the presence of 1.4 parts by weight of 5% sulfuric acid, dissolved in 30 parts by weight of furfural. The filler is a mixture of coke meal of the grain composition 0.01mm-0.38mm. The hardening is effected by sulfamic acid.

In the case of Examples 1 and 3, it was checked whether, after curing, a mixture in the physical Meaning from the cotelomer with furfuryl alcohol and the condensed furfuryl alcohol as well as the furfurol is present or whether a chemical compound has formed. This test was carried out by placing putty cylinders in Acetone and chloroform were boiled. After 40 hours of boiling, the cylinders appropriately occurred Example 1 a loss equal to the addition of the telomeres. The cylinders according to Example 3 occurred a loss of less than 1%. The cotelomere is built in here. So if you only value the Reduction of shrinkage when the good chemical resistance of furfurol-furfuryl alcohol condensates is used, such compositions can be used without further ado, because the other physical behavior is not influenced. If, on the other hand, value is placed on products that have increased chemical resistance, then will the copolymerization products with an already precondensed furan resin and expedient also combine furfurol and furfuryl alcohol.
The dilatoinetric behavior, ie the expansion behavior when exposed to heat, was also tested on the compositions according to Comparative Example A and Examples 2 and 4. The samples examined had approximately the dimensions 5 × 5 × 40 mm. The values were measured after 7 days air bearing (m) and further 16 hours of storage at 9O 0 C (n). The samples were at a heating rate of 2.6 ° C / min to a temperature of 12O 0 C (Sample m) and with a heating rate of l, 2 ° C / min to a temperature of 150 ° C heated (Sample n) . In the case of the sample (s), the lower heating rate is due to the fact that dilatometric changes take place more slowly because of the aging that has already taken place. In order to determine the behavior of the sample (s) under thermal stress, the temperature was kept constant for 5 hours after reaching the temperature of 150 ° C. The test specimen was then brought to room temperature within 20 minutes by removing it from the oven. The results are summarized in Table 2.

This irreversible thermal elongation, which is determined when exposed to heat, is advantageous when using a furan resin putty compound for lining containers, since it has a favorable effect on the tightness of the masonry.

Als Vergleichsversuch wurde eine Mischung aus 100 Gewichtsteilen Lösung gemäß A mit 500Gewichtsteilen des vorgenannten Quarzmehl/Säuregemisches zu einem Kitt vermischt und ein gleichartiger Schwindbalken hergestellt.100 parts by weight of furan resin telomer (combination according to Example 3) and 500 parts by weight of a filler consisting of: 90 parts by weight of quartz powder, 2 parts by weight of sulfamic acid and 0.5 part by weight of p-toluenesulfonic acid were mixed and incorporated Large-format bodies produced as described for Example 3. A mixture was used as a comparative experiment from 100 parts by weight of the solution according to A with 500 parts by weight of the aforementioned quartz powder / acid mixture mixed to a putty and a similar shrinking bar made.
Both shrinkage beams were stored in the open air and in the warmth as described, and the bulge measured.
