Description
Compared to conventional steam methane reforming (SMR) technology, methane pyrolysis is a process without CO2 emissions. The hydrogen obtained can be used as a climate-neutral energy source in industry, e.g. the steel sector, in transport or as a heat supplier. The carbon produced during methane pyrolysis (approx. 3-3.3 kg / kg H2 ) has a wide range of possible uses as a solid. For example, it could be used in the production of graphite anodes for lithium-ion batteries in the automotive sector. Other possibilities are in the field of gas and wastewater treatment (activated carbon) or for soil improvement in agriculture. But the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNT) can also be of great economic interest; a whole range of other applications are known, such as catalysts, catalyst support, H2 storage, electronic components and polymer additives. However, an absolute prerequisite for climate neutrality is that the carbon produced is not used in processes that result in the release of CO2 into the atmosphere.
In methane pyrolysis, CH 4 is split directly into its components, hydrogen and carbon. Unlike other technologies that use fossil resources, such as coal gasification or steam methane reforming, the biggest advantage of methane pyrolysis is the production of CO 2 -free hydrogen. Solid carbon is the only byproduct resulting from the thermal decomposition of methane, so neither a CO 2 separation step nor its subsequent storage is required.
Weitere Vorzüge der Methanpyrolyse, im Vergleich zu anderen bekannten Technologien zur Wasserstoffproduktion, ist der geringe Energiebedarf zur Wasserstofferzeugung durch Pyrolyse (37,8 kJ/mol H2) und liegt erheblich unter dem Energiebedarf zur Erzeugung von Wasserstoff aus Erdgas mittels SMR (63,3 kJ/mol H2) sowie der Bereitstellung von erneuerbarem Wasserstoff mittels Elektrolyse (285,9 kJ/mol H2).Further advantages of methane pyrolysis, compared to other known hydrogen production technologies, are the low energy requirement for hydrogen production by pyrolysis (37.8 kJ/mol H 2 ) and are considerably lower than the energy requirement for the production of hydrogen from natural gas using SMR (63.3 kJ/mol H 2 ) and the provision of renewable hydrogen using electrolysis (285.9 kJ/mol H 2 ).
Die endotherme katalytische Methanzersetzungsreaktion (Methanpyrolyse) könnte also einen vielversprechenden Ersatz für die konventionellen Prozesse wie Dampfreformierung, partielle Oxidation u.a. Verfahren darstellen. The endothermic catalytic methane decomposition reaction (methane pyrolysis) could therefore represent a promising replacement for conventional processes such as steam reforming, partial oxidation and other processes. As can be seen, the advantage of methane pyrolysis over water electrolysis lies in the significantly lower energy requirement for splitting the starting molecule, since the energy required (reaction enthalpy) for splitting the water molecule is significantly higher than that for the methane molecule.
Technologies for CO2 -free hydrogen production via methane pyrolysis are currently being developed on a laboratory scale or in smaller pilot plants worldwide.
- a) thermische Spaltung,
- b) Plasma-Spaltung und
- c) katalytische Spaltung.
- a) thermal cracking,
- b) Plasma fission and
- c) catalytic cleavage.
Thermal and plasma fission require very high temperatures of > 1200 °C to 2000 °C for the reaction and are therefore very energy-intensive. In addition, it is known that these two conversion processes place very high demands on the feed materials (lining and arc electrodes). It is also often found that hot spots and a continuous growth of a carbon layer can occur on the hot surfaces, worsening the heat transfer and subsequently blocking the reactor.
In catalytic methane splitting, a distinction is made between carbon- and metal-based catalysts.
From the literature it can be seen that when using metal catalysts a regeneration process is required to remove the carbon deposits from the surface of the catalyst after the reaction. It is proposed to regenerate metal catalysts by burning the carbon material with air or steam. A major disadvantage of this procedure is that the combustion of the carbon produces CO 2 emissions, which contradicts the actual "clean" process of methane pyrolysis. It is often reported that regeneration to the starting position is almost impossible because the active centers (pores) of the metal catalysts used often remain closed by carbon inclusions. It can also happen that the carbon produced during methane pyrolysis is contaminated with the active toxic nickel or cobalt material. Another major disadvantage of metal catalysts is that they can be poisoned by sulfur.
Studies on carbon-based catalysts have shown that they have longer service lives and greater resistance to carbon coking and poisoning, and they are also deactivated more slowly than metal catalysts. Another major advantage is that the carbon produced is also catalytically active together with the catalyst carbon.
Allerdings, und das ist der große Nachteil vor reinen bürstenartigen Kohlenstoffkatalysatoren ist, dass diese bisher nicht besonders stabil hergestellt werden können, sondern einen haarähnlichen Aufbau haben und von der Gasströmung leicht in Strömungsrichtung umgelenkt/verbogen werden könnenHowever, and this is the major disadvantage compared to pure brush-like carbon catalysts, is that they cannot yet be made particularly stable, but have a hair-like structure and can easily be deflected/bent in the direction of flow by the gas flow.
This is where the invention comes in. It has surprisingly been shown that ordinary metallic, tube brush-like devices, which, according to the state of the art, are coated with high-temperature carbon paint or powder (graphite, activated carbon, soot, ground end-of-life carbon fibers, etc.), achieve good conversion results in methane pyrolysis. The operating temperatures > 800 °C that are effective for methane pyrolysis can be advantageously achieved by direct electrical heating of the metallic catalyst carrier.
The carbon can be applied to the metal surface by dipping, brushing, powder coating or by combining or repeating these options. Very uniform layer thicknesses can be achieved.
The great advantage of the uniform geometry is that the carbon that is formed during methane decomposition and partially deposits on the uniform geometry of the catalyst can be removed online using relatively simple methods. Another advantage of these new types of metallic supports with carbon catalysts is their advantageous axial and radial heat conduction. This is particularly relevant for the endothermic reaction of methane pyrolysis for the uniform production of hydrogen and carbon. Another particularly advantageous feature is that the metallic supports of the carbon catalyst are particularly stable and cannot be deflected by the gas flow.
- • Measurement of the pressure loss of the catalysts and if the target value is exceeded, an online/offline cleaning is carried out with a suitable fluid, preferably CH 4 .
- • Measurement of the gas concentration (H 2 , CH 4 ) at the reactor outlet and if the setpoint changes, the above measures are initiated.
The object of the invention is to provide carbon catalysts for methane pyrolysis, which is considered to be the suitable alternative technology for hydrogen production, which enable a sustainable and cost-effective thermal decomposition of methane to hydrogen and solid carbon. This object is achieved by equipping the reactors for carrying out methane pyrolysis with tube brush-like metallic components coated with catalytically active carbon.

Therefore, if a target value changes, the cleaning/regeneration must be activated. To avoid the introduction of foreign gases into the methane pyrolysis system, cleaning is preferably carried out with CH 4 . -

Of course, the individual measures for cleaning/regenerating the catalysts can be combined and, of course, the examples described can be modified and supplemented in many ways without departing from the basic idea of the invention. The invention also relates to the process for optimizing methane pyrolysis by using brush-shaped, metallic catalyst supports for carbon-based catalysts.
