Description
The present invention relates to an aqueous coating material, a pasty coating material produced from this aqueous coating material, in particular a color paste, an emulsion paint, a primer or a plaster compound, and the use of the aqueous coating material according to the invention for the production of or as an emulsion paint, primer or plaster compound. The invention further relates to a coating obtained or obtainable by applying the coating material according to the invention one or more times.
With regard to the ecology and also the health of the users, especially indoors, water-based coating materials are becoming more and more important. However, in order to ensure the storage stability of such aqueous coating materials as well, they regularly contain surface-active substances or substances that influence the surface tension, such as wetting agents and / or dispersants. Dispersants should prevent the formation of agglomerates and / or the flocculation of powdery or granular substances and facilitate their uniform distribution in the coating material. Wetting agents serve to reduce the surface tension by wetting the powdery or granular substances with a liquid film and can also influence the mode of action of the dispersants.
Typically, organic compounds, such as derivatives of natural fatty acids or fatty alcohols, amines derived therefrom, (poly) alkoxylated derivatives or polyacrylic acids in the form of homopolymers or copolymers and any mixtures thereof are used as surface-active substances such as wetting agents and / or dispersants. The commercially available organic compounds are always in the form of water-soluble polar salts so that they can be readily absorbed by the aqueous medium of the coating materials.
However, it is generally not possible to dispense with wetting agents and / or dispersants due to the difficult production of such aqueous coatings and also with regard to storage stability.
It would be desirable to be able to dispense with wetting agents and / or dispersants based on the organic compounds mentioned and to provide those that have no negative effect on wet abrasion resistance, prevent the phenomenon of visually unsightly emulsifier runs and / or have no undesirable interactions with the other components of the coating.
In the meantime there are some approaches to develop systems which are supposed to avoid the above disadvantages.

The alternative systems known from the prior art use barium sulfate in particular in aqueous coating materials in order to increase their scratch and chemical resistance. However, especially in aqueous coating materials, barium sulfate has the disadvantage that it is sparingly soluble, regardless of the pH of the medium. Accordingly, the use of barium sulfate in aqueous coating materials has the disadvantage that further components have to be added in order to even bring this material into solution. As a wetting and / or dispersing agent in aqueous systems, barium sulfate seems to be less preferred.
The systems known from the prior art are accordingly still afflicted with disadvantages and leave something to be desired. The present invention was therefore based on the object of overcoming the disadvantages of the prior art relating to wetting agents and dispersants in aqueous coating materials to provide an aqueous coating material with a simple, inexpensive and available wetting and / or dispersing agent which has improved wet abrasion resistance and storage stability and emulsifier runs and disadvantageous properties, such as flocculation of pigments or changed effectiveness of thickeners, are prevented or at least significantly helped to prevent in the coatings obtained.

An “aqueous coating material” within the meaning of the present invention is in particular a pasty coating material, in particular with a viscosity greater than 500 mPas (determined with a Brookfield viscometer at 50 rpm and 20 ° C with spindle 5). This can preferably be designed as a color paste. Alternatively, the aqueous coating material can also be an emulsion paint, a primer or a plaster compound.
In the case of coatings which contain fillers b), those aqueous coating materials have proven to be suitable in which the fillers b) are selected from the group consisting of Silicates, in particular aluminum silicates, for example kaolin and / or calcined kaolin, carbonates, fluorspar, sulfates and oxides.

It has been found to be advantageous if the organic binder c) of the aqueous coating materials of the invention is used in the form of an aqueous dispersion. This can be based on vinyl acetate / ethylene copolymers, copolymers based on vinyl aromatics, in particular styrene, and acrylates and / or copolymers based on pure acrylates. During the production of the aqueous coating material, it has been shown that it is advantageous for organic binders c) to be added only after the water glass and / or silica sol d) in order to obtain a uniform, pasty, homogeneous coating material. Thickeners which comprise water-soluble nonionic polyurethane thickeners and / or cellulose thickeners, in particular methyl cellulose and / or hydroxyethyl cellulose, are particularly suitable.

With the aqueous coating material according to the invention, a pasty coating material produced from this aqueous coating material, in particular a color paste, an emulsion paint shown, a primer or a plastering compound and the use of the aqueous coating material according to the invention for the production of or as an emulsion paint, primer or plastering compound, and the coating or obtainable by applying the coating material of the invention one or more times and the process for its production is accompanied by the surprising finding that nanoscale calcium carbonate can be used as a wetting and / or dispersing agent in aqueous coating materials without the addition of further organic wetting and / or dispersing agents to need. Calcium carbonate is cheap and freely available in nature, and it is also a waste product in many large-scale processes or purification processes.
In terms of their storage stability, the aqueous coating materials of the invention are comparable to those which contain organic wetting agents and / or dispersants, but show improved wet abrasion resistance. Furthermore, the use of inorganic wetting agents and / or dispersants can suppress the phenomenon of visually unsightly emulsifier runs and the undesirable interactions with the other components of the coating material.
