Description
The invention relates to the electrolysis of water, in particular water mist, and the use of the gas mixture obtained as an additive in internal combustion engines and heating systems with an integrated burner.
The electrolysis of water to H 2 and O 2 with energy consumption is known. It is known that the high explosiveness of the oxyhydrogen gas is disadvantageous, so that both gases should generally be collected separately. There is also the possibility of diluting H 2 and O 2 in the form of brown gas (also called HHO gas) together with a transport gas, which can be air and / or a combustible gas. Electrolysers (electrolysis devices) are known for both variants.
In combustion engines, heating systems or even block-type thermal power stations, attempts have long been made to improve fuel combustion by additionally introducing a certain amount of hydrogen or brown gas into the combustion chamber.
The use of hydrogen or brown gas in the combustion chamber of engines, for example cars, is also known and improves the combustion of the fuel. The additional hydrogen or brown gas lead to better combustion of the fuel and to the fact that less fuel leaves the engine compartment unburned in gaseous form. As a result, consumption and emissions are reduced. The energy required for the electrolysis of water to HHO gas (Browns gas) or separated into hydrogen and oxygen is lower than the energy savings that result from the fact that less unburned fuel is lost if the gases are correctly metered. Regardless of the overall significant reduction in exhaust gas, however, the higher combustion chamber temperature resulting from hydrogen in the combustion chamber represents a small disadvantage for the NOx fraction, which under normal circumstances does not become smaller, but slightly larger.
Trockenzellen benötigen eine Gasabführung sowie ein Nachfüllen des verbrauchten Wassers.HHO cells can be designed as wet cells (electrodes surrounded by liquid electrolyte) or as dry cells (electrodes form the vessel so that the electrolysis cell remains dry on the outside). Dry cells require gas discharge and refilling of the used water.
As far as electrolysis is concerned, there are three known processes: PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis), high temperature electrolysis and finally alkaline electrolysis. All three processes are based on the splitting of water into its two components, oxygen and hydrogen, with the help of a current flow. While deionized water is used as the starting material in PEM electrolysis, it is water vapor in high-temperature electrolysis and a potassium hydroxide solution, for example, in alkaline electrolysis.
As is known, high-temperature electrolysis takes place at temperatures well above 100 ° C., the electrolyte water being naturally evaporated as water vapor. In the case of low-temperature electrolysis, on the other hand, the temperature is below 70 ° C.
The stability and shelf life of the individual gases produced also play an important role.
Electrolysis devices have straight plates arranged in parallel. Round plates that are arranged in parallel are also known.
As far as the connection of electrolysis plates is concerned, it is common to connect several pairs of electrolyzer plates in series. One or more groups of 6 or 12 plates can be connected to an operating voltage of 12 or 24V.
The object of this invention is to provide an effective electrolysis process and an apparatus suitable therefor. Both should just work. An electrolysis gas mixture with very advantageous properties is to be generated electrolytically, which is suitable for highly efficient and low-emission combustion in engines and heating systems. The device should also be space-saving. The method and device should preferably be usable in internal combustion engines or heating systems. There the efficiency in fuel combustion is to be increased. It is also said to enable the electrolysis of water mist (i.e. an aerosol of water in a gas).
The object is achieved by the features of the independent patent claims. Preferred configurations are covered as dependent claims.
- - Electrolysis plates, which are arranged parallel or twisted around one another, and
- - Have isolation strips between the electrolysis plates.
In the context of the invention, twisted means a rolled arrangement of parallel electrolysis plates so that the electrolysis plates are spanned approximately cylindrically.
The electrolysis plates are the electrodes of the electrolysis device.
Isolation strips within the meaning of the invention are strips made of a non-conductive material which ensure a constant distance between the panels. According to the invention, the mostly rectangular electrolysis plates are equipped with isolating strips one below the other.
- - electrolysis of water.
This also includes the fact that the water also contains other ingredients, such as hydrogen peroxide, which itself can be subject to hydrolysis.
It is known that during electrolysis, an electrolyte is brought to the electrolysis plates or they are immersed in the electrolyte or washed around with it. In the electrolysis process with the device according to the invention, H 2 O is gradually split up to one part and the other part is only polarized. In the latter case, the covalent bonds between oxygen and hydrogen are only broken.
The invention also relates to the use of the device according to the invention for the electrolysis of water, in particular the use in the method according to the invention.
The invention also relates to the use of the device according to the invention for cooling an air-gas mixture before it enters internal combustion engines.
The insulating strips advantageously improve the turbulence of the gases emerging from the electrolyzer output. This creates channels with one direction of flow, past the plates. At the exit, a gas mixture is produced which contains the electrolysis product and also the transport gas, which will be discussed further below.
Due to the long distance, the probability of a good turbulence is also much higher. In addition, in the case of a gaseous electrolyte, for example in the form of a carrier gas mixed with water mist, an additional suction vortex arises at the exit after the electrolysis plates, so that the gas mixture is additionally cooled at the exit. This is advantageous, for example, when the device according to the invention is used in conjunction with internal combustion engines.
As a result of the overall better turbulence and thus better mixing of the gases carried out with the gases produced during the electrolysis, the homogeneity of the gas mixture is in particular produced more quickly. The risk of explosion within the device is thus avoided, so that no bubbler (in the sense of a bubble counter) or check valve are necessary.
Dies ermöglicht schließlich auch die niedrigen Temperaturen von <70°C (Niedertemperatur-Elektrolyse)Another advantage is that with the invention no aggressive electrolytes such as concentrated KOH solution have to be used, but that water mist can also be used as the electrolyte, for example.
The invention thus makes it possible that the electrolysis plates do not have to be completely immersed in a liquid electrolyte, but rather that the electrolyte is also merely conducted past the electrolysis plates as a mist or aerosol. This finally also enables the low temperatures of <70 ° C (low temperature electrolysis)
The advantage of the invention is that the electrolysis with the better turbulence for faster production of the homogeneity of the mixture of electrolyte and gases formed nevertheless remains simple and is not prone to failure due to more complicated structures. Electrolysis with the invention works effectively.
Due to the better homogeneity of the gases passed through the device and the gases formed, a more uniform combustion is achieved in the subsequent combustion process. As a result, the engine runs more smoothly, also more quietly with lower engine noise, is cleaner (better exhaust gas quality) and less susceptible to soot, and the more constant combustion makes it more efficient (based on the same output).
As a rule, in addition to saving fuel, a slight increase in performance is also achieved.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the electrolysis plates are arranged twisted around one another. The twisted arrangement of the electrolysis plates is advantageous, very space-saving, which is particularly important in cars and trucks.
In a likewise preferred embodiment, the isolation strips are (largely) arranged diagonally on the electrolysis plates. Advantageously, diagonal isolation strips improve the turbulence of the gases emerging at the electrolyzer output even more. Due to the diagonal arrangement of the isolation strips, the paths are longer and the turbulence is also maximized. The suction vortex created above is also reinforced.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the isolation strips of the electrolysis plates are arranged at a distance from one another of 0.5 to 1.5 cm, particularly preferably 1 cm. In the case of parallel (non-twisted plates) the isolation strips are preferably at a distance of 5-7 cm, particularly preferably 6 cm.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a water mist generator is provided at an inlet of the device according to the invention. This creates a water mist (= finely divided water in air; not to be confused with water vapor). In this preferred embodiment, this water mist is used as an electrolyte and is transported to the electrolysis plates and thus through the electrolysis device by means of a transport gas (also called carrier gas). Preferred transport gases are specified below. A part of the water mist is split electrolytically, and the other part leaves the electrolysis device after passing through the electric field, polarized and ionized. In this embodiment, the step according to the invention is thus the electrolysis of water mist or the use of the device is one for the electrolysis of water mist.
It is advantageous that the risk of explosion from HHO gas (Browns gas) is eliminated by the strong enrichment of the transport gas with water mist. This creates a water mist / gas mixture.
When using the invention for internal combustion engines and heating systems, the advantage of using water mist as an electrolyte is that part of the water (which emerges “unused” from the electrolysis device according to the invention) also enters or is injected into the combustion chamber. It is known that water injection in internal combustion engines improves combustion and leads to less soot formation and less nitrogen oxide formation.
The combination of water injection with the invention therefore has the advantage that the water injected into the engine is additionally polarized + ionized and thus supports the combustion. In any case, the water mist is used as the electrolyte in this embodiment.
In this embodiment it is advantageously possible to cool flammable gas mixtures (before they are fed to an internal combustion engine, for example), among other things by the turbulence at the outlet of the electrolyzer and the water mist then present in the flammable gas mixture. This cooling also increases the efficiency and also contributes to the engine cooling.
In this embodiment, the water mist can advantageously be used as the sole electrolyte. The electrolysis voltage that is applied between the electrolysis plates is a multiple of that otherwise usual electrolysis voltage of 2V (per pair of electrolysis plates). In the invention, it is preferably 10 to 40V, in particular 12-36V, particularly preferably 12V-14.5V, between the respective plate pairs. In this embodiment, the electrolysis plates are preferably connected in parallel.
For the device according to the invention, a power supply line is to be used that is suitable for this voltage range and a current strength between 1-10A, especially 3.5A.
In a preferred variant of the embodiment of the invention with a water mist generator, this water mist generator is designed to be energized, ie the water mist is introduced into an electrical field before it is transported to the electrolysis plates. In other words, that can be energized means that an electric field is built up on the water mist generator by applying a voltage, which polarizes the water mist before it reaches the electrolysis plates. The electric field is preferably extended over the entire electrolysis device, so that the water retains its polarization right up to the touch of the electrolysis plates and even the non-electrolysed part is polarized at the exit of the electrolysis device shortly before a possible injection into a combustion chamber of the motor / heater.
An energized nozzle as a water mist generator is particularly simple and preferred.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the electrolysis is carried out with pulsed voltage.
The temperature in the electrolysis according to the invention (that is, the temperature that prevails in the space between the electrolysis plates) is preferably <70 ° C, particularly preferably <60 °, in particular between 45 and 50 ° C.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the water mist generator is an ultrasonic device, a nozzle or an exhaust heat-emitting device, so that the water mist in the invention is then generated by ultrasound, through the nozzle by means of spraying or by exhaust gas heat (the exhaust gas heat-emitting device by means of evaporation). It is particularly preferably an ultrasonic device or a nozzle.
The ultrasonic device is particularly preferably a 5-head ultrasonic nebulizer, which is placed, for example, in a suitably round, deep container with a certain amount of electrolyte and has an opening on both sides in the exit area to enable a carrier gas to pass through. The size or the number of heads of the ultrasonic mist generator depends on the desired or required amount of water mist to be produced for the motor.
The nozzle is preferably placed in an antechamber of the electrolysis device in front of the electrolysis plate area or directly in the supply line just before the electrolysis plates.
In a likewise preferred variant of the above-mentioned embodiment of the invention with a water mist generator, a transport gas feed is provided on this at the inlet of the device. The water mist is guided past the electrolysis plates with the help of a transport gas (also called carrier gas). Transport gases are preferably selected from air and combustible gases such as propane or butane or mixtures of these with air.
Das erhöht die Eignung für PKW.In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the electrolysis plates are 0.1 to 3 mm thick; a metal foil of <1 mm thickness is particularly preferred. A plate spacing of 0.2 to 1 mm is also preferred. The advantage of these thicknesses and spacing areas is that the entire device takes up little space. This increases the suitability for cars.
In a likewise preferred embodiment of the invention, the device has an uneven number of at least three electrolysis plates, particularly preferably 3 electrolysis plates. The advantage here is that the potentials with the same sign can be connected to the two outer plates.
In a preferred variant of this embodiment of the invention, the two outer electrolysis plates are connected as a pole (of the same name) and the respectively adjacent electrolysis plate as the opposite pole and all electrolysis plates have an alternating sequence of polarities. The negative pole of the battery or, for example, the vehicle ground is preferably connected to the two outer plates.
In the above variant of the embodiment of the invention, the outer housing of the device according to the invention is particularly preferably formed by the two outer electrolysis plates.
The use of the device according to the invention for the electrolytic generation of a water mist / gas mixture for internal combustion engines and heating systems is preferred. When used for internal combustion engines and heating systems, a reduction in fuel consumption and an improvement in exhaust gas quality are advantageous.
This generated gas mixture preferably comprises hydrogen, oxygen, air with or without fuel gas and water mist, or else HHO gas, air with or without fuel gas and water mist.

Ausführungsbeispiele - mit Elektrolyseur / KOH ohne Wassernebel / nicht verdrillt Platten H2-Elektrolyseur:Embodiments - with electrolyser / KOH without water mist / not twisted plates H2 electrolyser:
The table shows that with gasoline or diesel engines with an upstream electrolyzer, a 12-16% increase in efficiency could be achieved in the form of fuel savings.
The plate pairs are connected in series. The voltage totaled 12-14.5V, i.e. approx. 2 to 2.5 V per pair of plates, which corresponds to the optimal voltage for KOH electrolysis.
H2-Elektrolyseur:

Vergleichsbeispiele für die reine Wassereinspritzung direkt in den MotorComparative examples for pure water injection directly into the engine
Werte anderer Automobilunternehmen lagen bei 13%.Values from other automotive companies were 13%.
Ausführungsbeispiel - Wassernebel am HHO-Elektrolyseur (verdrillte Ausführung, mit bestromter Düse)Exemplary embodiment - water mist on the HHO electrolyser (twisted version, with powered nozzle)
In the following exemplary embodiment, instead of liquid water as the electrolyte or instead of a KOH solution, a water mist (i.e. a mixture of water mist and air) was supplied to the inlet of the electrolysis device by using the turbo air flow of a 2L diesel engine as the carrier gas or passing it through the electrolysis device . The mist was generated by means of a nozzle. The gas mixture formed is fed to an internal combustion engine. The electrolyser has three electrolysis plates made of stainless steel foil (<1mm thick), which are arranged twisted. This means that they have been rolled up to an approximately cylindrical shape and inserted into a suitable stainless steel metal sleeve. Between them, diagonally running isolation strips made of known materials are attached to the middle sheet on both sides.
Die Elektrolyseplatten sind parallel geschalten. Der Elektrolyseur hat 3 Elektrolyseplatten. The electrolysis plates are connected in parallel. The electrolyser has 3 electrolysis plates.
The electrolysis voltage necessary for the polarization of the water mist is in the exemplary embodiment with 12-14.5V in the range of the vehicle electrical system voltage in cars and is thus much higher than the usual electrolysis voltage (approx. 2V as in comparative example 2). The current strength of the 2L diesel motor (control regulated) was max.3.5A. The same voltage values were also applied to the nozzle for generating the water mist. In the exemplary embodiment, a full-flow electrolyzer was used, i.e. the entire carrier gas flow (here the turbo flow of the diesel engine) is passed through the electrolyzer.
Die Elektrolysetemperatur lag bei 45 bis 50°C.The electrolysis temperature was 45 to 50 ° C.
