Description
The invention relates to a fuel cell or electrolysis cell module with liquid electrolyte whose components are mainly tailored from flat plate material, whereby a particularly cost-effective production at low and high volumes is possible.
Today's electrolysis and fuel cells are usually constructed of bipolar plates with which, on the one hand, the electrodes are electrically contacted via the surface and, on the other hand, the gases are distributed uniformly over the electrode surface via a 3-dimensional structure. Due to the multiple functions to be fulfilled, these bipolar plates are usually structurally complex and expensive to manufacture. In addition, there are high demands on the materials used, as they are exposed to aggressive media and especially in electrolysis a strong oxidizing potential. For the construction of reversible fuel cells, which work as efficient energy storage in electrolysis as well as in fuel cell operation, particularly high demands are placed on the materials used.
Da Titan äußerst schwierig zu bearbeiten ist, werden auf diese Weise sehr hohe Herstellkosten generiert.[Dihrab2009] gives an overview of different materials for bipolar plates that can be used in reversible fuel cells. Reversible fuel cells work in both directions: gas generating in electrolysis operation and gas consuming in fuel cell operation. Due to the commonly used PEM membranes (PEM = polymer electrolyte) prevails, especially on the oxygen side, an acidic environment, which acts on almost all metals decomposing. The authors conclude that milled titanium plates with a gold coating are the most stable over the long term. Since titanium is extremely difficult to process, very high production costs are generated in this way.

In [Kurzw2016] the most important developments of alkaline fuel cells of the past decades are summarized. In alkaline fuel cells with monopolar construction, each electrode is individually led to the outside via a Stromleitbleche. The gas distribution is thus decoupled from the power supply and the use of expensive bipolar plates can be dispensed with. Based on this principle, the Belgian company ELENCO produced fuel cells for various applications in the 1970s and 1990s. The electrodes were made of activated carbon and platinum with PTFE for hydrophobization and were rolled on nickel nets. The individual electrodes were set in ABS injection-molded frames and welded into modules. Relatively low current densities up to 150 mA / cm 2 were achieved. In the 1980s, VARTA developed a process for the production of zinc-air batteries, in which RANEY nickel and other powdered catalyst materials are wrapped by "reactive mixing" in a knife mill of PTFE filaments. The mixture is then rolled in a roll mill continuously on wire nets, creating a flexible band. The company GASKATEL from Kassel still produces gas diffusion electrodes according to this method. These electrode bands were used inter alia for the production of the so-called EloFlux fuel cells, wherein the electrodes were separated only from a membrane, pressed together and potted with epoxy resin into blocks. Current densities up to 250 mA / cm 2 could be achieved, but the manufacturing process was more complex than originally planned. The company SIEMENS developed in the 1990s a fuel cell system with mobile electrolyte, which was pumped into a narrow gap between the electrodes to supply and remove heat and water of reaction. Current densities up to 400 mA / cm 2 could be achieved. However, by an additional pressure pad with nitrogen used as a compressed gas, the entire system was complicated and difficult. In favor of significantly higher energy densities, therefore, fuel cell research has focused almost exclusively on the development of PEM fuel cells in the past 2 to 3 decades. By means of very thin polymer electrolyte membranes current densities of over 1500 mA / cm 2 can be achieved today.
In [DWV2018], there is an indication that recent developments and R & D investment are returning to the direction of alkaline fuel cells. For example, the Center for Alkaline-Based Energy Solutions, CABES, at Cornell University in the US, has just received a grant of over US $ 10 million for the further development of alkaline fuel cell technology. Since the very expensive platinum catalyst and costly bipolar plates are indispensable components in PEM fuel cells, the production costs, even in mass production, can not be significantly reduced. In alkaline fuel cells can basically be used cheap nickel catalysts and simple plastics.

The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a fuel cell or electrolysis cell module with liquid electrolyte for laboratory investigations, for the characterization of electrodes, preferably in an alkaline environment and for the construction of stacks and fuel cell systems. The individual components, in particular the gas diffusion electrodes, should be easily and practically replaceable and possibly available as framed and prefabricated modules. Constructive changes should be implemented within a reasonable time and cost-effective and complex multi-level manufacturing processes should be avoided. It should also be possible for small quantities to build simple laboratory cells and visual models with low production costs. On the other hand, modular extensibility and scalability should be given in order to be able to produce cost-effective stacks and fuel cell systems in larger quantities.
