The present invention relates to magnetic separators used to remove ferromagnetic particles from a liquid, such as separators for removing contaminants in working fluids to enable reuse. In the mass production of manufactured metal elements, such as engine components, a working fluid used to cool and lubricate the cutting tool is collected, cleaned and returned to the work cycle for reuse, with filters being used to clean the fluid.
In some cases it is desirable to remove the metal particles separately to avoid clogging of the filter medium, as is the case, for example, with the abrasion that occurs on individual parts.
Magnetic separators have been developed for this purpose and have been commercially available for several years now.
Diese bekannten Separatoren umfassen eine Reihe von längsseitig eng aneinanderliegenden magnetischen Stäben, die aus nicht magnetischen Rohren besteThese known separators comprise a series of magnetic rods, which are arranged closely together lengthwise and are made of non-magnetic tubes.

In this way the liquid is caused to flow through the spaces between the bars, steel or iron particles being attracted to the surfaces of the bars and held there to be removed from suspension in the liquid. The series of bars, supported on chain loops, is driven to convey each pair of bars to a scraping station where the accumulated particles are scraped off and discharged into a discharge chute.
Eine derartige Vorrichtung ist beschrieben in den US-Patenten 4,031,011; 4,261,826 und 4,209,403.Such a device is described in US patents 4,031,011; 4,261,826 and 4,209,403.
In the apparatus of the type shown in these patents, the bars are arranged to form a chain extending as a closed loop partially within a basin, the loop advancing to convey each bar into the scraping station. The liquid is introduced into the basin from outside the loop of magnetic bars and flows into the space within the loop by flowing through the spaces between the bars. The spacing and flow rates are selected to produce a sufficiently low flow velocity to allow the particles to migrate to the bars.
Since the flow is from outside the loop to the space inside the loop, some metal particles can settle on the basin before reaching the spaces between the bars. Such particles accumulate in the basin, making frequent cleaning necessary.
Distribution plates are provided to ensure relatively level flows through all pairs of adjacent bars, but these are necessarily located within the loop, creating the need to disassemble the chain loops to remove the plates for cleaning purposes.
These devices have a complex mechanism to drive the loop and the scraper, and the scraper mechanism itself is susceptible to misalignment.
In Application No. 09/502,145, filed February 11, 2000, an improved scraping mechanism is described and relates to the bars of a magnetic separator.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved magnetic separator of the type described, in which all metal particles must pass through the magnetic bars in order to prevent the particles from settling on the bottom of the tank.
The above object and others which will become apparent from a study of the following description and claims are achieved by directing the inlet flux to a region within the loop of bar magnets and the induction flux out through the spaces between the bars. This ensures that all particles must pass through the spaces between the bars and do not settle on the bottom of the tank before being exposed to a strong magnetic field between the bars.
The distribution plates are mounted outside the rod loop so that they can be easily removed for cleaning purposes.

In the following detailed description, certain technical terminology is used for clarity of understanding and a particular embodiment is described. It is to be understood, however, that such terminology is not intended to be limiting and should not be construed as limiting, for the invention may take many forms and variations within the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, the magnetic separator 10 of the present invention comprises a basin 12 of welded plates having sloped bottoms 14, the basin 12 being supported on a base 16. A pair of sloped bottom overflow sumps 18, 20 are disposed on either side of the basin 12 and receive overflowing purified liquid as described later, a discharge member 22, 24 being disposed at the lower end of each overflow sump 18, 20 and the two sumps being connected to a return pipe 28 as shown.
A drain valve 26 is arranged at the bottom of the basin 12 and a cleaning opening is also provided.
A closed loop series of parallel, longitudinally extending magnetic bars 30 are arranged for recirculation in the basin 12. The magnetic bars 30 are commercially available and are made of stainless steel tubes in which ceramic discs are stacked to a point within a few inches of each end. The non-magnetic stainless steel can be periodically scraped to remove accumulated particles. The bars 30 are relatively close together, being spaced approximately 1/2 inch apart. The flow velocity between the bars is thus limited to a few inches per second to allow the particles to migrate to the surfaces of the bars 30 where they are held as the liquid passes through the bars 30.
The bars 30 are connected in pairs to end pieces 32 which are connected to support bars 34 which in turn are connected to the respective connecting elements of chain loops 36 on each side of the bars 30. The chain loop 36 rests on guide elements (not shown) which also usually limit the flow around the bars 30.
Plastic scraping blocks 38 are permanently attached to each pair of rods 30 and positioned by a fixed guide band 40 which engages an external groove on each aligned scraping block 38.
A rodless cylinder 42 is positioned above the rod loop and successively engages each block 40 to move it down and back on the respective pair of rods 30, thereby removing accumulated particles.
As best seen in Fig. 5, a grooved inlet tube 44 extends inwardly from one end of the basin 12 to introduce a liquid to be treated for central treatment within the closed loop array of magnetic bars 30. A distributed flow of liquid enters the basin 12 along the grooves 43 in the inlet tube 44, the liquid being forced to flow through the spaces between the adjacent pairs of magnetic bars.
The closed loop of rods 30 is centrally located in the basin 12 so that each side wall of the basin is spaced from the loop.
A pair of perforated distribution plates 46A, 46B distribute the effluent along each side of the basin 12 to ensure a more even flow between all of the rods 30 toward a pair of weirs 48, 50, each of which is located on either side of the rod loop 30. A small pressure drop of 1 psi is established across the plates 46A, 46B to ensure a distributed flow across the entire plate area 46A, 46B. Weirs 48, 50 determine the liquid level in the basin such that all of the rods 30 except those which are moved over the liquid are covered by the liquid.

A screw conveyor 52, driven by an electric drive 53 (Fig. 4), extends below the bars 30 at the scraping station and is embedded in a shaft 54 protruding from one end of the separator 10 (Fig. 3).
A rotary pneumatic actuator 56 is used to periodically index the chain loops 36 via a sprocket 58, thereby advancing the next pair of bars 30 into the shaving station.
When a liquid to be cleaned is introduced into the magnetic rod loop, it is ensured that all particles pass through the gaps between the rods, thus allowing them to be removed in larger quantities. Furthermore, in the event that larger objects, such as gloves, accidentally enter the liquid, they are conveyed to the surface and into the shaft 54.
