Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a component made of SiC ceramic, which consists of a Starting body from cellulosic material by its pyrolysis and subsequent Infiltration of silicon, which at least partially reacts with carbon to form SiC represents is. The invention further relates to a method for producing a component SiC ceramic, in which a starting body made of cellulose-containing material pyrolyzes and subsequently infiltrated in the pyrolyzed starting body silicon, at least partially reacted with carbon to SiC.
Ein derartiges Bauteil bzw. das entsprechende Verfahren ist aus Journal of the European Ceramic Society 18 (1998), Seiten 1961-1973, unter der Überschrift "Biomorphic Cellular Silicon Carbide Ceramics from Wood: 1. Processing and Microstructure", beschrieben. Such a component or the corresponding method is from Journal of the European Ceramic Society 18 (1998), pages 1961-1973, under the heading "Biomorphic Cellular Silicon Carbide Ceramics from Wood: 1. Processing and Microstructure ". According to this publication, experiments were carried out to get out of a course grown wood to produce a silicon carbide ceramic. After the specified ver the natural wood is first dried, then at temperatures between pyrolysed 800 and 1,800 ° C in a nitrogen atmosphere, whereby a Koh lenform preform results. Liquid Si is then submerged into this carbon preform at 1,600 ° C Vacuum infiltrated. This creates a SiC ceramic.
It is conceivable that with the above procedure simple construction parts can be produced. It can be seen that the properties of the components due to the Properties of natural wood-based materials fluctuate greatly, which is particularly true sults that natural wood-based materials are very unhealthy due to growth and location factors are built up differently in their cell structures. Thus, a reproducible her provision of ceramic materials from such natural wood materials with under properties comparable to the individual components are hardly possible.
Based on the prior art described above, the present Invention, the object of a component of the type described, and a corresponding method for producing a component to create the reproducible possesses properties or ensures reproducible properties of the component. In addition, the possibility should exist that the properties meet the respective requirements adjustments that are placed on a SiC ceramic component. The specified The process is intended to enable very cost-effective SiC ceramic components to be produced.
The task is solved, starting from the component with the ones specified at the beginning Characteristics, in that the starting body consists of a technical semi-finished product, that consists of components in the form of chips and / or one or more layer (s) cellulosic material, bound with pyrolyzable binder, with adjustment the structure of the component through the choice and the mass fractions of the cellulose-containing Material is made to the binder. According to the method, the task becomes solved that a technical semi-finished product is used as the starting body, the Be constituents in the form of chips and / or one or more layers of cellulose according to material bound with pyrolyzable binder, and that Structure of the component through the choice and the mass fractions of the cellulose-containing material is adjusted to the binder.
It is essential that the starting material for the component to be manufactured from SiC ceramic a technical semi-finished product is used, which consists of components in the form of chips and / or one or more layer (s) made of cellulose-containing material. Such Chips and / or layers can be put together in a defined manner to create a technical To create semi-finished products. These starting materials, i.e. H. technical semi-finished products from Spä layers and / or layers are already very extensive and in great variety as materials available, especially when it comes to technical semi-finished products made of wood deals with materials that can be used in construction and Furniture industry as well as in mold making. The properties of the manufacture lent component made of SiC ceramic can also by the proportion of pyrolyzable rem binder, which the starting body contains, can be adjusted. This pyrolysierba Ren binder can already be present in the construction element, to which un is used indirectly, d. H. an item that he traded as a prefabricated part is available, or the binder content can be defined by producing the starting body pers from chips and / or layers.
It can be seen that through the use of technical materials, in particular from technical wood-based materials, a technical semi-finished product that can be built in to a high degree the requirements of a component to be manufactured from SiC ceramic can be fitted. As a parameter to make the properties of SiC ceramics very strong, however however, with very simple means of influencing, there are the variations of the La gene orientation, the binder used, the type of cellulose-containing material, such as in the form of chips and / or layers, which are put together variably can be at. Furthermore, it is possible, especially if technical woods are considered Starting material used to manufacture a technical semi-finished product, ver different hardwoods or softwoods to be used, which with a binder to half-board witness be pressed. In terms of hardwoods, beech and oak are particularly popular and maple, while softwoods are essentially softwoods.
According to the method, a starting body made of cellulose-containing material, ge bound with pyrolyzable binder. This body is pressed, whereby the pressed blank advantageously already approximates or corresponds to the end component end contours. But it is also possible to close this pressed body its final shape to work with what is common in the woodworking industry set tools is possible. The starting body or the technical semi-finished product can be built up in layers, with layers of wood or other rem, cellulosic material, can be inserted to structure the semi-finished product Ren. A major advantage is that the porosity already in the technical semi-finished product can be greatly influenced by the cellulose-containing starting material used. In Regarding wood as a cellulosic starting material is of particular importance that the cell structure of the wood with the corresponding transport channels for water as well Nutrients (tracheids) and the medullary rays perpendicular to these transport channels can be used for the later infiltration process.
The starting body from the defined technical semi-finished product is then py rolyzed, preferably at temperatures between 800 to 1,600 ° C. In this pyrolyzer th starting body, which is highly porous with a very high proportion of carbon, the continues to have translaminar pore channels, is then flowed under vacuum silicon infiltrates. Such an infiltration process can be carried out very easily, because the silicon has a very high capillary action with regard to the cell structure of the carbon has body. With a corresponding holding time, preferably at the maximum infil tration temperature, a reaction of the liquid silicon with that in the pyrolyzer amorphous carbon, which then becomes a Microstructure made of SiC ceramic leads, which is very different from the initial structure of the technical Semi-finished product is dependent as the starting body.
The cellulose-containing material should preferably have a strongly cellular structure, since with such a material the pore channels in the starting body in the form of a technical semi-finished product can be influenced in the direction and size. It has been shows that an SiC ceramic, which is made from a technical semi-finished product has a very high proportion of translaminar pore channels, a quick and full permanent Si filling is possible. This results in a dense SiC ceramic with less Residual porosity. If the proportion of pore channels is chosen too high, it can occur that the resulting SiC ceramic has high Si contents as well as due to the high output porosity defects, such as B. blowholes. If the pore channels are too small, observ care is taken to ensure that uniform Si infiltration is difficult and areas with not reacted carbon may be present.
The proportion of the carbon content of the binder that is used to make the chips and / or layers of cellulosic material should be at least 30% wear. This provides sufficient carbon to later infiltrate of liquid silicon to form silicon carbide.
By building a semi-finished product from several layers, the resulting ones can be created Tensions in the technical semi-finished product, and thus in the later SiC ceramic, from built or kept low. If a technical semi-finished product is built, at which the layers have the same orientation in relation to their main fiber directions have, it is achieved that there is a relatively dense structure with high SiC contents. However, high strengths can only be achieved in the main fiber direction.
For this reason, the semi-finished product used should have at least two layers with under have different orientations with respect to their main fiber directions. Gera de with such a layer orientation results in a semi-finished product that runs parallel to the un different strength orientations. It also results due to the barrier effect of the individual layers during pyrolysis, the Si infiltration un supporting crack structure.
To open a technical semi-finished product that forms the starting body of the SiC ceramic build, in which every second layer with respect to their orientation by 90 ° to each previous layer is rotated, an even distribution of stress in the Semi-finished product reached. Such semi-finished products (e.g. plywood) or the corresponding SiC Ceramics can be used when a large-area component is required, for example in the form of a plate, or if the main directions of exposure in the The plate plane is perpendicular to each other. The same applies if the layers are one have quasi-isotropic orientation; just a component made from such a SiC Ceramics should be used when there is high dimensional accuracy across all process steps and uniform, quasi-isotropic properties are required in the plate plane.
For a simple construction of a technical semi-finished product, there is one that has individual layers, which are made of plywood layers. Such veneer layers can be peeled off a trunk, preferably with a thickness of ≦ 1.5 mm, more preferably ≦ 0.7 mm. These layers are then moistened smoothes and dries so that flat veneer layers are created. By peeling off the cell structure of the wood with the tracheids as transport ka remains in a log channels for water and for nutrients and with the medullary rays perpendicular to the tracheo get that. Because a log still has a different structure of natural growth, which is dependent on the year and location, can then these veneer layers are layered differently, so that there is a largely homo gener starting body with pore structures results. Between the individual layers of veneer If necessary, chip material can be added to the technical semi-finished product build up. Individual layers can be made from individual, butting veneers cuts be formed. This measure is particularly advantageous if the company orientation is to be adapted to the geometries of the component to be manufactured.
As already mentioned, the individual layers should have a quasi-isotropic orientation have to the formation of a uniform structure, caused by the thin layers, to support and at the same time thin-walled, spatially curved To be able to manufacture ceramic components.
The technical semi-finished product can be made of composite panels with a repeating pattern be constructed, preferably also in the form that the layers are symmetrical are built up to the middle of the plate. Are particularly suitable for such a structure Laminated wood panels, such as those used in the construction or furniture industry, so that on starting materials available in a wide variety can be used. It is to point out that in addition to cellulosic material in the form of wood the various which also have other cellulosic materials that have a cellular structure sen, can be used.
An essential part of the technical semi-finished product as the starting body is the one set binders to the constituents of the starting body in the form of chips and / or to bind one or more layers. The binder can be used during the Pyrolysis ceramic-forming polymer. It is precisely such a binder that brings Advantage with it that a certain proportion of ceramic already before the siliconization in the pyroly based molded body is present.
If an Si-organic polymer is used as the binder, there is the advantage that after the infiltration of the pyrolyzed preform with liquid silicon the content of SiC in the structure can be increased. This has the advantage that the resulting si Contents or the implementation of silicon can be reduced. Basically, as Phenol binders are used. But it is also possible to use glue resin as a binder to use. However, the use of phenolic resin is preferred, since with such Binder is achieved that the technical semi-finished product according to the usual in the wood industry Process and inexpensive to manufacture as well as high carbon loot is made possible during pyrolysis. This eliminates the risk of destruction reduce the technical semi-finished product.
Care should be taken to ensure that the binder content is <50% by mass or Is <25 mass%. If the binder content is chosen higher, it can occur that the cellular structure becomes clogged and high shrinkage stresses during pyrolysis occur. Just below 25% by mass of the binder content can be achieved that the cells of the cellulosic material remain free; however, it should be on care must be taken that the proportion of binder is not less than 5%, otherwise a sufficient dimensional stability is no longer guaranteed.
In order to enable rapid pyrolysis of the technical semi-finished product without damage, the porosity of the technical semi-finished product should be <5%. The upper limit of the However, porosity should not exceed 60%; an optimal proportion of the porosity at The volume of the entire body is determined by the choice of the type of wood and the binder and the desired microstructure of the SiC ceramic.
According to the method, it is advantageous to parallel the liquid silicon by capillary action to infiltrate to the cell structure of the technical semi-finished product, as a result of which a fast and Even production of large-area components is possible.
Furthermore, the liquid silicon should be below a temperature above 1,420 ° C Shielding gas or vacuum are infiltrated into the pyrolyzed technical semi-finished product, whereby a temperature range above 1,600 ° C is particularly preferred, as Residence time in the furnace is shortened and the reaction of Si with the pyrolyzed semi-finished product increases SiC is accelerated.
For the pyrolysis process step, it has proven useful to pyrolize the technical semi-finished product in several successive temperature steps with cooling to room temperature, as this will result in additional segmentation Cracks develop and thereby escape of gaseous degradation products with large-format and thick-walled components. In addition, the first temperature step of the pyrolysis in a temperature range between 250 ° C and 300 ° C are carried out, since from this temperature range the highest mass lustrate occur during the pyrolysis of conventional technical semi-finished products.
The amount of carbon in the semi-finished technical product before infiltration with rivers silicon, will increase after a first pyrolysis of the technical semi-finished product this binder added again, namely by vacuum or pressure infiltration, and then this technical semi-finished product is subjected to a further pyrolysis.
The carbon can also be present in the technical semi-finished product after its pyrolysis be modified by that the pyrolyzed, technical semi-finished product under vacuum or Protective gas atmosphere of a graphitization at a temperature of at least 1,600 ° C is subjected. Such a graphitization step is still to be carried out if the reaction rate of SiC formation is to be increased.
It has been shown that to prevent warping during pyrolysis, mechanical loads should be applied to the technical semi-finished product transversely to the main fiber direction with 10 3 -10 5 N / m 2 (0.001-0.1 MPa). With this measure, the technical semi-finished product largely retains its shape, despite the possible high volume shrinkage.
Before pyrolysis, the technical semi-finished product can be pressed under a slight pressure of <5 × 10 6 N / m 2 (5 MPa) to a density of <1.0 g / cm 3 . With this process step, the chips or layers are connected to one another and brought into the desired shape of the SiC component, taking into account the volume shrinkage occurring during pyrolysis. The slight pressure ensures that the cellular structure of the cellulose-containing semi-finished product is preserved. In addition, before pressing, the constituents can be coated with the binder, namely by usual impregnation or spraying methods, which has the advantage that the overall required content of binder can be reduced by the uniform coating and the Cells remain open during pressing.
The aim is that the finished component made of SiC ceramic has no or one minimal residual mass of carbon should have, since free carbon the Oxidati resistance of SiC ceramics. For this reason, it should be used to manufacture such a minimal residual mass fraction of carbon SiC Ceramic silicon at least 2.35 times the mass of the pyrolyzed, techni be added to the semi-finished product. This corresponds to the silicon mass required for a stoichiometric silicon reaction.
Furthermore, SiC ceramic should have a porosity of <5% silicon infiltration 3-4.2 times, based on the mass of the technical Semi-finished product before the siliconization.
Another variation according to the process is that the chips, layers and / or Layers were first pyrolyzed, then bonded with binders and be siliconized after a further pyrolysis. Especially with such a procedural measure assumption is ensured that the volume shrinkage or the settling paths during the Pyroysis can be minimized. This means that the technical semi-finished product can largely end up contour of the SiC component are brought, so that complex machining steps hard SiC ceramics are eliminated.
Instead of liquid siliciding the pyrolyzed starting body, the silicon can or in vapor form under protective gas or vacuum at a temperature above Be infiltrated at 1,600 ° C. Such infiltration of silicon through the gas or steam shaped phase has the advantage that SiC components with high porosity (e.g. to heat insulation, for filters) with a very precise SiC content. In the opposite In addition, the silicon in the liquid phase should always enter the pyrolyzed, porous one technical semi-finished products are infiltrated if there are dense, possibly Si-containing SiC components are required.
The SiC ceramic components which can be produced according to the invention and which correspond the processes for producing such components from SiC ceramic are described below explained by hand.

A technical semi-finished product is provided as the starting body for the production of a component from an SiC ceramic, which consists of components in the form of chips and / or layers or layers of cellulosic material. Fig. 1 shows such a technical semi-finished product 1 with a base in the direction of the xy plane, wherein individual chips are laminated in the z-direction. The chips are bound with a pyrolyzable binder, preferably with a phenolic resin.
In contrast, Fig. 2 shows a technical semi-finished product 1 as a starting body, which is made up of individual layers, which are layered one above the other in the z-direction and glued with a pyrolyzable binding medium. Fig. 3 shows a technical semi-finished product, which is formed accordingly to FIG. 2. This technical semifinished product 1 is built up from three layers 2 , the lower and the upper layer or veneer layer (if it is wood) have the same orientation of the main fiber directions, indicated by hatching, while the middle layer has an orientation of the main fiber direction be sitting, which runs at an angle of 90 ° to the orientation in the upper or lower position, in each case in the xy plane. The three layers 2 , which can have a thickness between 0.25 to 2.5 mm, and each peeled off, for example, from a log, are dried beforehand and then glued with a binder 3 , namely phenolic resin. During the gluing process, a pressure can be exerted on the upper veneer layer 2 , as indicated by the arrow, denoted by "p". In this way, a technical semi-finished product with an almost arbitrary thickness, seen in the z direction, can be built up from layers. As will be explained below, the choice of the type of wood, the layer structure and the orientation of the main fiber directions as well as the binder used, the pressure p applied and the compression time t, i.e. the time during which the pressure p is exerted, and the compression temperature T can Properties of the technical semi-finished product can be set. With regard to the compression temperature T, it should be noted that complete crosslinking of the binder is ensured during the pressing process in order to achieve a high C content during pyrolysis and an intimate connection of the individual layers.
Subsequently, the technical semi-finished product 1 is pyrolyzed at a temperature <600 ° C, but not higher than 1,600 ° C. Liquid silicon is then infiltrated into the pyrolyzed semi-finished product, so that this liquid silicon reacts with carbon to form SiC. The infiltration temperature must be above 1,420 ° C to ensure that the silicon is in an adequate, liquid state.
During the pyrolysis, a shrinkage of the technical semi-finished product can be determined, even if individual veneer layers are used to build the technical semi-finished product 1 . Due to the temperature effect on the technical semi-finished product during pyrolysis, shrinkage cracks of various shapes and sizes can be observed. However, there are also relatively evenly distributed microchannels, which can be attributed to the tensile stresses that develop in the layers as a result of the shrinkage hindrance to neighboring layers.
Since the shrinkage behavior is essential for the fact that a defined crack structure is to be built in the technical semi-finished product, but on the other hand the technical semi-finished product is to be dimensioned such that a component can be made from an SiC ceramic with defined dimensions, investigations have been carried out performed by six different technical semi-finished products, which are given in the table below. The parameters, density, open porosity and shrinkage behavior in the pyrolyzed state were examined. The six different technical semi-finished products differed by density values g / cm 3 , which were between 0.5 and 0.62. The respective open porosity e '[%] was almost constant with values between 66.3 and 70.4%. Using the specified shrinkages measured for units BF1, BF2, BF5 and BF6. It can be seen that the shrinkage behavior in the plane and thickness direction is very different and is strongly influenced by the orthotropy of the layer structure. The change in length (18-22%) corresponded approximately to the change in width, while the shrinkage in thickness was considerably higher (34-36%). It follows from this that the cracks that arise are larger transversely to the layer structure than parallel to the layer structure. This creates a SiC ceramic with a structure that is characterized by a distinctive layer structure that leads to a material with orthotropic properties.
Due to the shrinkage behavior, as was examined, it follows that it is precisely with the layer structure and the orientation of the main fiber direction in the individual layers that these mechanical and physical properties can be greatly influenced. In Figs. 4 to 7 different layer structures are shown in the z direction with superimposed layers.
In Fig. 4, the technical semi-finished product is layered from individual layers, which have their main fiber direction oriented exclusively in the x direction (so-called plywood). In contrast, the technical semi-finished product of FIG. 5 is layered in the z-direction so that successive veneer layers each have their main fiber direction aligned at 90 ° to one another (so-called plywood). Finally, FIG. 6 shows a layer structure in the z direction, in which the individual veneer layers are alternately offset, viewed in the z direction, at 45 ° to one another (so-called star wood).
In terms of shrinkage behavior, the same type of wood, same binder and with identical process parameters of identical changes in thickness in all three Cases going out. The shrinkage behavior in the length and width direction below differs clearly and leads to different microchannels, labeled through different cross-sections and orientations, after pyrolysis and resulting from it different structures or properties in the SiC component.
May be during a plywood of Fig. 1 is preferred for one-dimensional components, such as rods or beams, is used, bulky and Stern timber is shown in Fig. 5 and 6 are preferred for flat components, such as plates or discs, are used. With a decreasing change in angle between adjacent layers and a decreasing layer thickness, the SiC structure becomes finer and more homogeneous in the x, y plane and approaches a homogeneous structure, the layer structure in the z direction usually being retained.
FIG. 7 shows an example in which a ring-shaped or tubular, technical semi-finished product is constructed from individual plate sections, each of which forms ring segments, which are in turn connected to one another. These individual plate segments are layered one on top of the other and each offset with their interface. The fiber direction in the individual sections is arranged running in the circumferential direction. This technical semi-finished product already has approximately the shape of the construction to be made from SiC ceramic. This figure shows that even complicated structures can be built in a simple manner with the measures according to the invention.
An example of the technical semi-finished product 1 , as shown in FIG. 1, was produced as follows:
Coniferous wood chips were used, pressed with a resin based on phenols. The density of the plate was ρ = 0.71 g / cm 3 . The proportion of open porosity was 52.3% based on the volume of the pressed, technical semi-finished product, which had a total thickness of 22 mm.
This technical semi-finished product was then at a temperature of up to 76 hours 900 ° C, pyrolyzed under nitrogen purge. The nitrogen purge had that Purpose so that the fission products released during the pyrolysis are quickly removed were and thus an overpressure and resulting destruction of the technical Semi-finished product could be avoided.
In addition, the technical semi-finished product was loaded with a weight of 2 kPa in the z direction during the pyrolysis. After pyrolysis, the density of the pyrolyzed, technical semi-finished product was ρ = 0.64 g / cm 3 with an open porosity fraction of 47.4% based on the remaining total volume of the technical semi-finished product.
The pyrolyzed, technical semi-finished product was then siliconized with liquid Si, for a total of 32 hours, at a temperature of up to 1,500 ° C. and at a heating rate of 80 K / h under vacuum. The silicon absorption was 215% based on the mass of the pyrolyzed semi-finished product. The density of the siliconized and thus ceramicized technical semi-finished product was 1.88 g / cm 3 with a residual porosity of 40.0%. The SiC ceramic component produced in this way no longer has any carbon components and can be used, for example, as a filter element because of the relatively large, accessible porosity.
In a second example, a technical semi-finished product was constructed, as shown in FIG. 2. Selected beech veneers with a veneer thickness of 0.65 mm were glued with urea resins (in accordance with DIN 68 705 Part 2). The individual fur layers were glued, rotated in the z direction by 90 ° to their main fiber direction.
The initial state of this technical semi-finished product could be determined with a density of 0.79 g / cm 3 and an open porosity of 42.1%.
The subsequent pyrolysis was carried out for a total of 192 hours at a temperature of up to 900 ° C., a variable heating rate and again a flushing with nitrogen gas. The technical semi-finished product was weighted with 13.6 kPa during the pyrolysis, specifically in the z direction. After pyrolysis there was a density of the technical semi-finished product of 0.64 g / cm 3 and an open porosity of 49.6% based on the volume of the pyro-lysed semi-finished product.
Siliconization was then carried out for a total of 40 hours at a temperature of 1650 ° C and a heating rate of 70 K / h, under vacuum.
The silicon uptake during siliconizing could be determined as 314.0% (based on the mass of the pyrolyzed semi-finished product). The ceramicized component showed a density of 2.53 g / cm 3 , a residual porosity of 0.3% and a flexural strength of 143.7 MPa.
A comparison of the two examples listed above, in each of which a technical semifinished product according to FIGS . 1 and 2 was provided as the starting product for creating a component made of SiC ceramic, shows that despite high porosities in the pyrolyzed state, depending on its microstructures dense or porous ceramics are produced. Laminated timber according to Example 2 generally allows denser and firmer ceramics than those made of chipboard as a technical semi-finished product due to its layer structure.
In FIGS. 8 and 9 are sectional images shown (in z-direction).
Here, FIG 8 1 shows. An image of a technical semifinished product, with a structure accordingly Fig. And Fig. 9 shows a section in the z-direction of a technical semifinished product according to FIG. 2.
In the sectional view of FIG. 8, which shows a particle board in the siliconized state in a 100-fold magnification, the silicon carbide can be seen on the light areas, while the pores can be seen on the basis of the dark area areas. This sectional view shows that porous SiC ceramics with large, freely accessible surfaces can be produced in a simple manner.
Fig. 9 zeigt den geschichteten Aufbau. Fig. 9 shows the layered structure. For this component, a technical semi-finished product was built up from a large number of veneer layers, each of which was glued. The individual veneer layers, layered in the z direction, had a main fiber direction in the x direction, these layers being designated by the reference number 4 , while the layers which had a main fiber direction in the y direction, ie perpendicular to the layers or Veneer layers 4 , denoted by 5 . It can be seen that the individual layers had a symmetrical structure with respect to a central plane, with the reference numeral 6 , the two middle layers each having an orientation of the main fiber direction in the y-direction. The black lines between the individual layers show the original gluing levels of the individual veneer layers as they existed in the technical semi-finished product before pyrolysis. The light areas in turn show the pure silicon contained in the ceramic component, the dark or black areas represent silicon carbide. On the basis of FIG. 9 it can be seen that very dense structures based on Si and SiC are easy to produce can be used for example as structural ceramics in thin-walled construction.
