Description
The invention relates to a two-dimensional fiber array, which in regular arrangement of a predeterminable number of optical fibers such that their fiber axes are orthogonal to the array surface are arranged and the end faces of a plane-parallel termination with the array surface or one of these upstream levels, and a method for producing such arrays.
According to the state of the art, optical fibers are diverse and used especially for signal transmission. In this Relationship are fiber optic coupling elements z. B. as a connector or for coupling and extracting light in combination with optoelectronic components required. In working in parallel Systems require suitable fiber array components regularly arranged fibers. Such elements are already considered one-dimensional arrays, e.g. B. for connectors, used technically. So z. B. in US Patent 5,656,120 a method for fixing a one-dimensional Fiber arrays described on a substrate. Here are parallel in one Substrate-provided V-shaped grooves are provided into which the fibers are inserted and fixed. Because of the high achievable precision and Dimensional accuracy of such mechanical holding elements come for that mentioned substrate preferably anisotropically etched silicon wafer into consideration. An extension of such one-dimensional arrays to two-dimensional Arrays can only be stacked by one-dimensional Arrays can be reached. However, you lose the advantages of Adjustment precision in the second dimension, as this is a separate one Construction and connection technology is required. It also restricts such a structure realizing the smallest possible grid spacing strongly at least in the second dimension.
However, with the development of more complex systems, the need increases Fiber arrays with one that is as small as possible in two dimensions Grid spacing of the recordings for the optical fibers to be inserted. U.S. Patent 5,394,498 discloses a two-dimensional optical fiber array and described a process for its manufacture in which individual Optical fibers are inserted into cylindrical holes that are in a substrate, like a methyl acrylate plastic. The corresponding distributed cylindrical holes should have a length of 3 mm and a diameter of 0.25 mm. To the End faces of the fibers with respect to a and all fibers Align covering transparent substrate exactly on this Centering means are additionally provided, for example in the form of Rings or similar allow the end faces of the fibers to be grasped. For the production said centering means are precise microlithographic processes required. The type of contribution provided there Optical fibers in the holes provided, however, is quite difficult and requires the use of micromanipulators and microscopic Technology.
Patent 5,600,748 discloses a stacked arrangement of a one - dimensional fiber structures for the realization of two-dimensional structures. With this solution, however, one is possible Addition of geometric errors in the stack direction. The "Crossover" sticks also causes the geometric errors on the opposite side orthogonal to the aforementioned Stacking direction also add up. In addition, the manual effort is Contact considerably.
An optical fiber array connector is also known from US Pat. No. 5,907,650 known in which the positioning of fibers in a special shaped opening is described. By using taped Positioning accuracy is optimized for fibers. Regarding the actual method of realizing two-dimensional However, fiber holder structures are not statements in this document contain.
The invention has for its object a two-dimensional Fiber array and a process for its manufacture to be specified using high precision with the least possible technical effort two-dimensional packaging and self-alignment of the Enable optical fibers.
The invention is characterized by the features of claims 1 and 12 solved. Advantageous configurations are given by the subordinate claims recorded.
The essence of the invention is that they form a fiber array Optical fibers of at least two identically designed superimposed platelets are detected, each in parallel aligned gap-shaped recesses are introduced, wherein the gap-shaped recesses of the first plate and the second plate, or other intended plate each are aligned orthogonally to each other and the optical fibers in the aligned openings formed thereby and are cast in a form-fitting manner, the maximum number that can be brought in of optical fibers the square product of the number of corresponds to gap-shaped recesses of a plate.
Es zeigen:The invention is based on a schematic embodiment examples will be explained in more detail. Show it:

In Fig. 1, a first plate 1 and a second wafer 2 is first shown, which are used as essential components of a two-dimensional fiber arrays of the invention are used. In the example, platelets have been selected for this, which have been structured from a silicon wafer (not shown) in such a way that they are given an identical square outer edge and slot-shaped recesses 11 , 21 . In the example, the gap-shaped recesses 11 , 21 should have a width of 55 μm and an equidistant spacing a of the recesses from one another of 250 μm.
Depending on the application, it is within the scope of the invention Recesses, for example, a non-equidistant spacing from each other to be given, but it is essential that in this case too used platelets with regard to the arrangement of the gap-shaped recesses are identical to each other.
The thickness of the platelets should be 250 µm in the example. It is within the scope of the invention to use any material for the platelets, for example a glass, into which the necessary recesses can be made with the precision required here. However, the use of silicon has the advantage that precise recesses can be produced by means of lithographic structuring methods known from microsystem technology, whereby the recesses can be given a conical cross section in a light and advantageous manner for the intended purpose, as is shown in FIG. 4 of a tile is indicated. Likewise, other structuring technologies of high precision, such as. B. ion beam techniques or impression techniques, used to produce said recesses. So that the platelets 1 , 2 can be positioned congruently one above the other even when the platelets are rotated by 90 °, adjustment marks 10 , 20 have also been introduced in the microlithographic structuring of the platelets.
FIG. 2 shows a plan view of two platelets formed according to FIG. 1, with common aligned feedthroughs 3 in which the provided optical fibers 4 are guided and fixed can be seen from FIG. 1a. Here, FIG 2. 1 shows the first wafer 1 and second wafer 2 shown in Fig. With partially inserted optical fibers. 4 It can be seen that, depending on the number of slot-shaped recesses provided, a maximum number of optical fibers can be inserted, which corresponds to the square product of the number of recesses in a plate, here 4. 4 = 16. The bushings 3 formed can be variably equipped up to the maximum possible number of optical fibers 4 to be provided. In particular, if the cross section of the gap-shaped recesses is conical, the minimum width b of the gap-shaped recesses not significantly exceeding the outer diameter d of the optical fibers, in particular not exceeding 10% (see FIG. 4), the optical fibers used can be used 4, without extensive manipulation techniques, first insert it into the recesses of the first plate 1 , as shown in FIG . The second plate 2 is then placed with respect to the position of its recesses rotated by 90 ° to the first plate 1 and the optical fibers 4 can be inserted into the second plate 2 in the same simple manner. Only then does the two platelets 1 , 2 merge, the adjustment markings making it possible to overlap the platelets in a congruent manner. By merging the optical fibers 4 in the bushings 3 are aligned. If the optical fibers are aligned parallel to the normal n of the plates 1 , 2 , an adhesive or a curable plastic (for example epoxy resin) is introduced, which ensures that the plates are connected and the optical fibers are fixed. A partially assembled minimum version of a two-dimensional fiber array according to FIGS . 1 and 2 is shown in a perspective view in FIG. 3.
In order to comply with the requirement of the parallel alignment of the axes XX of the optical fibers 4 to the platelet normal n (see FIG. 4) without complex micromanipulatory measures, it is within the scope of the invention to use more than two of the platelets mentioned, each of which is analogous to FIG. 2 rotated by 94 ° to the preceding plate, which is already fitted with optical fibers, which are successively provided with the optical fibers 4 and then placed congruently on top of one another and connected. Such an embodiment of a lamina composite is indicated schematically in FIG. 5, in which three lamellae 1 , 2 , 1 ', which are formed here according to FIG. 4, are shown in section with inserted optical fibers which are flush on one side with a lamina.
Further possibilities for ensuring an orthogonal alignment of the optical fiber axes with respect to the array surface are shown in FIGS . 6a and 6b. In both cases, two plate arrangements 1 , 2 and 1 ', 2 ' according to FIG. 1 are provided, which are spaced plane-parallel from one another by means of an intermediate piece 5 ( FIG. 6a) or by means of an outer holding means 6 ( FIG. 6b) and are oriented in this way, that the correspondingly assigned bushings 3 are aligned. In order to ensure sufficient long-term stability of such arrangements, the intermediate piece 5 or the holding means 6 has openings 51 or 61 , through which the space created between the respective plate pairs 1 , 2 and 1 ', 2 ' is cast with an epoxy resin 7 becomes. In order to complete the end faces 41 of the optical fibers 4 parallel to the array surface, the fibers are ground and polished after the epoxy resin 7 has hardened up to the array surface. It is also possible to apply a further hardening coating 8 to an outer platelet level (cf. FIG. 6a) and then to polish the optical fibers 4 until they assume a flush flush with this coating or in one plane within this coating. A further possibility for ensuring a flush flush fiber termination is indicated in FIG. 8, in which the end-face fiber end faces are positioned abuttingly in pot-shaped recesses 91 of a further plate 9 placed thereon, the recesses 91 being filled with an optical immersion and / or a hardenable plastic could be. The terminations of the optical fibers 4 described above, which can be provided on the respective outer plate pairings or plates, represent optimal optical connections to appropriately designed transmitter and receiver arrays, not shown here, which can also be a one-sided component of the fiber array described.
Furthermore, it is within the scope of the invention to design the intermediate piece 5 or the outer holding means 6 such that the normals n and n 'of the spaced-apart plate assemblies 12 , 22 enclose an angle α, where α <0 °, as shown in FIG. 7 is indicated schematically for an angle α = 90 °.
