Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a photoelectrochemical Sensor and a method for operating the sensor.
The photoelectrochemical sensor comprises a photoelek trochemical cell brought into a fluid or through which a fluid is passed. The Photoelectrochemical cell has at least one half conductor electrode, which when irradiated with light Photocurrent generated, as well as at least one counterelectrode trode. The electrochemical cell further comprises a Light source or a translucent window, so an exposure device.
A suitable fluid to be measured flows through the electrochemical cell, so through the photocurrent Ions oxidized or reduced at the semiconductor electrode adorned, i.e. implemented. The one around the electrode set amount depends on the concentration of ions in the Fluid as well as from the time it takes for the implementation pro time is spent. The amount of on the electrode converted ions is determined by the charge ge will measure that from the semiconductor electrode at Be radiate with light flows to the counter electrode. The Pho tostrom thus serves as a measure of the concentration of the ion in the fluid.
Es gibt zwei Fälle: 1. Ionen werden im Fluid direkt um gesetzt. 2. There are two cases: 1. Ions are directly in the fluid set. 2. Ions are first on the semiconductor electrode deposited and redissolved by electricity.
Depending on the fluid to be measured and the electrodes used, the oxidation or reduction can only be achieved with the help of the photocurrent. In such cases, the photocurrent alone is a quantitative measure of the ion concentration. For example, almost any substance can be oxidized with the help of an exposed TiO 2 semiconductor electrode, even if it is in an aqueous solution. In many cases this is not possible without exposure or with metallic electrodes. For which conversions a photocurrent in combination with selected semiconductor materials are suitable - as long as the expert does not have the appropriate knowledge - has to be found out by experiments.
A photocurrent usually shows a dark current part on. To the photocurrent from the dark current disconnect, it is necessary to increase the current to measure when irradiated with light. Carries the dark Current contributes significantly to the total current flow, so it is too measuring change in current when irradiated with light small compared to the total current. Just be relative measured small current changes, so is the accuracy the measurement inevitably relatively low.
Memming: Photoinduced Charge Transfer Processes at Semiconductor Electrodes and Par ticles" in: "Topics in Current Chemistry, Vol. 169, Springer Verlag, Heidelberg 1994, S. 105-181" zu ent nehmen. The aforementioned prior art is for example the publication "R. Memming: Photoinduced Charge Transfer Processes at Semiconductor Electrodes and Par ticles "in:" Topics in Current Chemistry, Vol. 169, Springer Verlag, Heidelberg 1994, pp. 105-181 " to take.
The object of the invention is to create a photo electrochemical sensor and a method for Operation of the sensor for efficient measurement of the Concentration of a substance in a fluid medium.
The object of the invention is achieved by a device with the characteristics of the main as well as through a process solved with the features of the subsidiary claim. Advantage harsh configurations result from the subclaims chen.
The claimed photoelectrochemical sensor comprises an electrochemical cell with at least one light sensitive electrode and at least one counter electrode. Under the photosensitive electrode is one to understand those that unite when irradiated with light Photocurrent generated. The photoelectrochemical sensor also has an exposure device (possibility for exposure) over which the photosensitive Electrode is irradiated. This exposure device includes an interruption means through which the irradiation the electrode is interrupted with light or in intensity or wavelength is modeled. It is pulsed, chopped or modeled light generated. The photoelectrochemical sensor also has a subtractor on the current generated during the Interruption or modeling of light irradiation flows from the current that is drawn during the tection used irradiation of the electrode flows. Such a subtractor is e.g. B. in commercial he used lock-in amplifiers.
The electricity freed from the dark part becomes one Current meter supplied. The measured photocurrent or the charge that has flowed is a measure of the concentration a substance that is in a fluid medium, especially if the implementation is only under exposure takes place.
In the device according to the claims Subtraction of the photocurrent measured absolutely. A sol The absolute measurement can be done with much greater accuracy speed compared to a measurement of the total current consequences. Therefore, the claimed device be particularly well suited for using concentration measurements perform with high accuracy.
The photoelectrochemical sensor can then also be used Detect if the dissolved in a fluid medium not on the light-sensitive electrode separates, but the photocurrent alone is a measure of is the concentration in the fluid medium. Particularly emp However, the measurement becomes sensitive when it is light-indicated a de-energized for a defined period of time or at a given potential (with or without exposure) by the substances to be determined in the solution Substance deposited on the photosensitive electrode and then dissolved again due to light. Here the electrode can only be removed by the Fabric becomes sensitive to light.
Is the photocurrent measured which is necessary for the resolution? solution of the separated chemical compound required Lich, the sensitivity is particularly high. The prerequisite for this is that the end point of the resolution solution can be clearly detected. This is e.g. B. there by possible that after the dissolution of the substance flowing photocurrent in its size measurable from the un decides that flows with the dissolution. The end point However, the resolution can also be achieved by other methods, e.g. B. optical detection such as measurement of reflection or electrical measurements such as B. the measurement of Surface conductivity or electrode capacity respectively.
The claimed device also opens the Possibility to set the wavelength used for the measurement vary. On the one hand, this allows the modulation of the Light. On the other hand, it is possible at the implementation of substances from the solution or to use vanishing additional absorptions, if e.g. B. generated surface conditions or in their energetic situation or occupation are changed, or when new semiconductor materials are deposited s or dyes are formed. The variation of Wavelength is also advantageous in combination with the use of composite semiconductors or various areas to which semiconductors are built in parallel mood of different substances in the solution, if these different on the different semiconductors be set. Any light sensitive semiconductor requires rule to achieve the desired effect moderately determined wavelengths. The waves used lengths are then suitably selected by a specialist len to get good results.
The device according to the claims has in particular Electrodes made of inorganic or organic Semiconductors, such as silicon, cadmium sulfide, Indium oxide or hydrated cadmium oxide, or from materials that are chemical or chemical electrochemical reactions with fluids Form fabrics. Such a light source can be natural Liche or artificial used, the visible Generates light, but also light sources in the infrared or ultraviolet spectral range.
For example, the conc tration of sulfide ions, selenide ions or telluridio NEN in aqueous solution or oxygen or Nitrogen oxides measured in ionized gases.
One application example is the parallel detection of Telluride, selenide and sulfide in one solution at Ver using an indium oxide or cadmium oxide electrode. This forms in contact with the solution (currentless or with corresponding potentials) an indium or cad mium chalcogenide layer. The amount of within Chalcogenides so formed at a defined time a measure of the amount of chalcogenide ions in the solution solution. This layer is on the n-type electrodes under exposure to wavelengths of the respective gene chalcogenides are absorbed in polarization in the reverse direction (positive potentials) again solves. The photocurrent flowing here is a measure of the amount of chalcogenides on the surface.
Parallel detection of the ions is here in two ways possible. First, the deposition can be under exposure with wavelengths that are only of those in the respective Process step not to detect chalcogenides (e.g. from CdTe and SdSe), but not from the one to be determined Sulfide to be absorbed. In this case, only that Sulphide (if you choose a longer wavelength, that too Selenide) deposited. If the load is then ge measure that is required to the Chalcoge or nid (e) to dissolve, so is the concentration of the respective chalcogenide measured in the solvent been.
Another variant of parallel detection is in, two or more semiconductor connections from one solder solution at the same time (e.g. indium sulfide plus -selenid plus -tellurid), but for the resolution ver to use different wavelengths. So at Changing the wavelength of light from large to small Wavelengths first telluride, then selenide and then dissolve the sulfide again and so their con Determine concentration-dependent amounts on the surface men.
In an advantageous embodiment, it is therefore a provided such a light source with the light from be tunable wavelengths are generated can.
A can be used as the means for generating the pulsed light Chopper should be provided, i.e. a disc, the opening gene and which is positioned in the light beam, that leads to the electrode. If the disc turns, so ge reaches light in a pulsed form with a fixed frequency to the electrode. In this case it can be used as a sub-heater a lock-in amplifier can be used.
In the following the invention is illustrated by examples explained in more detail.
An aqueous solution with traces of sulfides is ge through the sensor arrangement at 30 ml / minute pumps. The photoelectrochemical sensor points as photosensitive electrode a semiconductor electrode which consists of a thin film of indium oxide. A platinum mesh is used here as the counter electrode. In order to be able to carry out a potential measurement, also a calomel electrode as a reference electrode set. If the electrode has visible light with a Exposed wavelength of 400-500 nanometers, so flows with a potentiostatically controlled semi-egg terelectrode potential of +0.5 V (SCE) a charge for Counter electrode. The charge that has flowed is then a measure of the concentration of sulfide ions in the aqueous solution solution. The charge that has flowed due to the photocurrent is measured using a lock-in amplifier.
An aqueous solution that contains traces of sulfides is pumped through the photoelectrochemical sensor. The photoelectrochemical sensor has a light temp sensitive electrode on a semiconductor electrode, the is made of hydrogenated cadmium oxide, as well as a Counter electrode and a reference electrode as in Bei game 1. Again, the semiconductor electrode with Light at a wavelength of 400-500 nanometers irradiated and measured as in Example 1 the photocurrent sen. In contrast to the above example, this is Electrode - as experiments have shown - works well net to be used repeatedly. Apparently it is Rever conversion of the cadmium oxide into a sulfide rather sibel than in the case of indium.
With the help of the two aforementioned devices, concentrations of 10 -6 or 10 -7 mol can still be easily detected.
A parallel determination of telluride, selenide and sul fid of cadmium oxide by light-induced dissolution e.g. B. possible when using the wavelengths 830 nm (Absorption only in CdTe), 600 nm (absorption in CdTe and CdSe) and 500 nm (absorption in all three Chalco envy).

The figure shows a section through a photoelectric sensor according to the invention.
