Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for the plasma-assisted production of Diamond composite materials under thermodynamically metastable conditions for diamond.
unterscheiden:
In general, according to the current state of the art and commercial interest, according to the property profile and manufacture, roughly 3 groups of diamond composite materials can be distinguished:
- a) polykristalliner Diamant (PKD), der unter ultrahohen Drücken größer 4,5 GPa und Temperaturen höher als 1400°C erzeugt wird und i.d.R. eine metallische (US 3,745,623) oder keramische Matrix (DE 29 34 567; Akaishi, "Synthesis and sintering of diamond using non-metallic catalysts", in: Zairyo Kagaku, Vol. 32, Nr. 1, (1995), S. 12-17) enthält, besitzt einen hohen Anteil direktgebundener Diamantkörner und wird überwiegend für härteste Schneid-, Schleif- und Bohranwendungen eingesetzt. Diese Materialien gelten als sehr teuer. Entsprechend ist ihr Einsatz begrenzt.a) polycrystalline diamond (PCD), which under ultra high pressures greater than 4.5 GPa and Temperatures higher than 1400 ° C is generated and usually a metallic (US 3,745,623) or ceramic matrix (DE 29 34 567; Akaishi, "Synthesis and sintering of diamond using non-metallic catalysts ", in: Zairyo Kagaku, Vol. 32, No. 1, (1995), pp. 12-17), has a high proportion directly bonded diamond grains and is mainly used for the hardest cutting, grinding and Drilling applications. These materials are considered to be very expensive. Their use is accordingly limited.
Dazu sind auch Schichtverbünde mit einer Abscheidung auf dichte oder poröse Zwischenschichten zu zählen.b) low-pressure vapor deposition of diamond ("chemical vapor deposition", CVD) specifically produces films and layers that are suitable for wear protection, heat conduction, Semiconductor applications and related purposes are used. This procedure is common that a mixture of carbon and hydrogen-containing gases is broken down into a plasma from which diamond is metastable without graphite formation. The low deposition rate makes this technology currently only for the production of thin layers in the sub-mm range Interesting. There are also layer composites with a deposition on dense or porous Count intermediate layers.
Vorteile dieser Verfahren gegenüber PKD sind die niedrigeren Gerätekosten und eine größere Gestaltungsfreiheit hinsichtlich Größe und Geometrie der Produkte.c) Sintered or infiltrated composite materials containing diamond particles, in which powdery or granular diamond represents a largely passive storage phase, during the bond through the compression behavior (sintering or melting) of the matrix phase he follows. These processes take place at moderate pressures (up to approx. 200 MPa) as with hot presses or hot isostatic pressing, and at temperatures up to about 1000-1100 ° C, the cause little or no graphitization. Diamond changes above this Temperatures from the surface around in the soft graphite, which also binds to the Matrix weakens. Materials of this type are preferably used in grinding, sawing and Drilling applications used with far less mechanical and tribological stress than PKD. A typical procedure describes e.g. B. DE 36 15 127 for the production of at 600 ° C and Diamond tool sintered under (moderate) pressure. Advantages over these procedures PCD are the lower device costs and greater freedom of design in terms of size and geometry of the products.
The method relating to the invention is to be assigned to this last group.
Corresponding to the normally low graphitization temperature of diamond, at The known methods of this type predominantly use such materials as a matrix that a have low sintering or melting temperature (cobalt, iron, copper alloys). Because of Their lower strength makes them less suitable for cutting tools or heavy drilling and Grinding applications, in particular a temperature load on the tool of several have a hundred degrees Celsius.
("Influence of pulsed sintering on strength of synthetic diamonds in composition materials",
A number of process optimizations have been developed to produce stronger diamond composites despite the temperature limitation:
A targeted manipulation of the hot pressing process is considered positive. Andreev et al. ("Influence of pulsed sintering on strength of synthetic diamonds in composition materials", Sverkhtverdye materialy, Vol. 5, No. 1, pp. 10-12, 1983) suggested pulsed heating for diamond-WC-Co composites during the sintering process , which should reduce the thermal load on the diamond particles. However, this approach does not fundamentally improve the thermal stability of diamond.
Kume et al. ("Hot isostatic pressing of diamond containing inorganic composites", in: "Physical Properties of Composites", Symposium während der 125. TMS Jahrestagung, Anaheim, Kalifornien, USA, 4-8. Ahnliche Versuche wurden mit Aluminiumoxid als Matrix durchgeführt (Kume et al, "Preparation of diamond-alumina composite by hot isostatic pressing", "Reports of the Government Industrial Research institute Nagoya (Japan)", Vol. 41, Nr. 3, S. 99-105, März 1992). Other concepts aim to control the sintering temperature of materials that are difficult to sinter Use very fine-grained matrix powder or by using sol-gel techniques reduce. DE 42 17 720 describes a sintering process for producing abrasive grains Diamond in an alumina matrix. Among other things, the sintering temperature is determined by Use of fine-grained, nanoscale aluminum oxide with the appropriate sol-gel processsing reduced. Kume et al. ("Hot isostatic pressing of diamond containing inorganic composites ", in:" Physical Properties of Composites ", symposium during the 125th TMS Annual meeting, Anaheim, California, USA, 4-8. February 1996, pp. 53-5) sintered Diamond composite materials with partially stabilized zirconium oxide, hot isostatic at 1150 ° C and 150 MPa, also using very fine-grained, reactive powder. Similar attempts have been made performed with aluminum oxide as a matrix (Kume et al, "Preparation of diamond-alumina composite by hot isostatic pressing "," Reports of the Government Industrial Research institute Nagoya (Japan) ", Vol. 41, No. 3, pp. 99-105, March 1992). The bond between diamond and the However, the matrix can be assessed as quite weak, since at these temperatures the graphite formation begins. For the detection of graphite, the authors limit themselves to X-ray diffractometry, whose sensitivity is low. They report a complete compression only for Diamond concentrations of 10 vol%. The advantage of these composite materials produced in this way is accordingly rel. low for applications such as cutting and grinding.
A comparable way is described in US 5215942 for the use of a organometallic precursor, the decomposition of which results in a readily sintering matrix material. These techniques either require complex powder preparation or use rel. expensive Starting powder. Furthermore, it is also doubtful whether the graphitization is actually was completely suppressed.
Nakagawa et al. ("Cast iron bonded diamond grindstone by powder metallurgy", Konferenz:" Modern developments in powder metallurgy", Toronto, Canada, 17-22. Allerdings erscheint es fraglich, entsprechendes bei niedrigen Drücken zu erwarten, wie Piekarcyk and Prawer ausführen ("Role of atomic hydrogen in preventing surface reconstruction and sp2 bond formation during chemical vapour deposition of diamond", in: "Diamond and related materials", Vol. 2 (1993), S. 41-47). To a small extent, thermal stability is improved by using hydrogen in the sintering atmosphere. This is usually molecular hydrogen, which can be easily adsorbed up to 1000 ° C and thus hinders the reaction of atmospheric oxygen with the diamond surface to form CO bonds that initiate graphitization. However, this effect is no longer effective above 1000-1100 ° C. Nakagawa et al. ("Cast iron bonded diamond grindstone by powder metallurgy", conference: "Modern developments in powder metallurgy", Toronto, Canada, June 17-22, 1984, Vol. 17, "Special Ceramics" series, pp. 221-226) the production of diamond bonded in cast iron by hot pressing iron powder and coarse diamond grain at 1100-1140 ° C under molecular hydrogen, whereby clear signs of diamond dissolution or graphitization have already been observed. Under somewhat different pressure and temperature conditions, Fedoseev et al. ("Some properties of diamond ceramic", Izvestiya Akademii Nauk, SSR, Neorganicheskie Materialy, Vol. 13, No. 10, pp. 1904-5, October, 1977) that hydrogen adsorbed on the surface is sufficient, the graphitization during compression under ultra high pressures and temperatures above 1400 ° C. However, it seems questionable to expect the same at low pressures, as Piekarcyk and Prawer explain ("Role of atomic hydrogen in preventing surface reconstruction and sp 2 bond formation during chemical vapor deposition of diamond", in: "Diamond and related materials", Vol 2 (1993), pp. 41-47).
Dies ist nur für polymergebundene Werkstoffe nachgewiesen, deren Festigkeit sehr niedrig einzustufen ist (Zugfestigkeit bei Raumtemperatur: < 400 MPa bei Raumtemperatur).EP 0691413 A2 claims that a hydrogen-saturated surface binds diamond with a polymer matrix, especially from CVD diamond, deteriorated and therefore z. B. a lower one Tensile strength. It should be borne in mind that this effect only applies to alliances with low process temperature (melting or sintering at 400 ° C) is effective. At high Temperatures (above 1000 ° C) desorb hydrogen very quickly and then do not Problem more. EP 0691413 A2 also points to a positive effect of a Surface graphitization of the diamond. This is only for polymer-bound materials proven, the strength of which is very low (tensile strength at room temperature: <400 MPa at room temperature).
The use of atomic hydrogen as present in a plasma is relevant for the method according to the invention. Sintering metals and ceramics using plasma is state of the art. US 4719078 describes a process according to which the surface of a ceramic powder body is generated by a plasma atmosphere from H 2 and N 2 , to the extent that it is sintered so densely that the powder body can be completely hot isostatically compressed in a second step. Here, the use of hydrogen, which can be atomic, is also used to maintain reducing conditions. US 4501717 describes a plasma sintering process in which hydrogen is used to reduce metal alloys to be sintered in order to achieve low residual oxygen contents. Both patents do not refer to diamond.
In summary, it can be said that the thermal stability of diamond in the Production of appropriate composite materials using the previously known methods only slightly, perhaps by 100 ° C to about 1100 ° C, which is still significantly below the sintering or melting temperature required for ceramics or refractory metals.
The main advantage of the method according to the invention is therefore that Diamond composite materials at temperatures above 1100 ° C and below favorable Conditions up to approx. 1600 ° C can be sintered or infiltrated without graphite formation. In order to can use matrix materials of higher strength and temperature resistance or higher diamond concentrations than before can also be achieved. So materials become with much better wear resistance available. These are suitable for a wide range of Drilling, cutting, grinding and wear protection applications. By doing without an elaborate Powder preparation, such as the sol-gel technique, can save costs.
A novel consolidation method for engineered structural materials", in: "Proceedings of the first international conference on advanced synthesis of advanced materials", Kalifornien, 31. August-2. September 1992, S. 105-7). The method according to the invention can be summarized in that a diamond-containing powder body densely sintered or melt-infiltrated in a suitable plasma which contains or generates atomic hydrogen, which, as mentioned, the diamond surface stabilized at higher temperatures. The preferred technical method is as Plasma-activated sintering is known (J.R. Groza, "A novel consolidation method for engineered structural materials ", in:" Proceedings of the first international conference on advanced synthesis of advanced materials ", California, August 31-September 2, 1992, pp. 105-7). Depending on selected matrix material can be used to reduce the residual hydrogen content Heat treatment or aging at temperatures below 1000 ° C in hydrogen-free Atmosphere or vacuum.
This technique has the advantages that the plasma exists within the powder body and so that atomic hydrogen spreads better as long as no closed one Porosity is present. Furthermore, the surface of the powder particles is cleaned and activated and thus the compression process accelerated considerably. Furthermore, uniaxial promotes Print the compression.
It is crucial for the process according to the invention that the reducing effect of the hydrogen is of primary importance here. The atomic hydrogen present in the plasma is in dynamic equilibrium with atomic hydrogen adsorbed on the diamond surface, which stabilizes the sp 3 configuration of the carbon atoms on the surface under ideal conditions up to about 1600 ° C, and thus prevents graphite formation. Because of this, there is a significant difference in the effect of atomic and molecular hydrogen on the thermal stability of diamond. Therefore, diamond composites can be sintered, densified or infiltrated with a melt in an atmosphere that contains atomic hydrogen at much higher temperatures. In principle, atomic hydrogen can be generated by heating molecular hydrogen to temperatures above 2000 ° C in significant quantities. A preferred way is to break down a hydrogen-containing gas into a plasma, e.g. B. by microwaves, arcs, electrical discharge (plasma spraying systems), cathode rays, high-frequency excitation, electrically heated wires, etc.
For the compression of thin bodies with a thickness of up to 2 mm, one can externally generated plasma (e.g. by microwaves) that diffuses atomic hydrogen without difficulty in the porous powder body.
The plasma-activated is used to compact bodies with a thickness greater than approx. 2 mm Hot pressing preferred. A corresponding device consists of a uniaxial hot press, in the standard case equipped with a press die and stamps made of graphite within one evacuable chamber. The graphite stamps are via contact electrodes with current leads connected, over which a current is pulsed with high amperage, such that both a Plasma is generated within the powder body and the die can also be heated. Of the pulsating direct current generates a rel. even distribution of spark discharges in the Powder bodies that ultimately generate the plasma.
In the present case, a SPS 1050 sintering system from Sumitomo Coal Mining is used, with a pulse generator for a maximum pulse current of 5000 A. The system is equipped with a Cooling device and corresponding cooling water control, gas flow and pressure control fitted. The temperature measurement and control takes place up to 1300 ° C via a thermocouple, also using a pyrometer.
The graphite stamps used here have a diameter of 20 mm, the cylindrical one Graphite matrix with a corresponding inner diameter of 20.1 mm and one Outside diameter of 50 mm with a height of 50 mm. To the hydrogen throughput during of sintering and improving the removal of gaseous reaction products are the hallmarks with 3-6 1 mm deep and 1 mm wide grooves. Alternatively, the stamp (at Diameters smaller than 40 mm) can be flattened flat on the side at 3-6 points, alternatively the die in the area of the sample must be drilled, the loose with coarse Graphite powder can be filled.
As a diamond, it can be both natural and synthetic using ultra-high pressures or Diamond produced by a CVD process in globular, platelet, needle, fiber or whisker type or used as a particle coating. Such can be used as a matrix Materials are used which after completion of the sintering process as elemental metal, Oxide, carbide, nitride, silicide, boride, silicate or alloy in one or more crystalline or amorphous phases occur and one or more elements from the group Be, Mg, Al, Si, Zn, Ti, Zr, Mo, B, W, Ta, Nb, Cr, Hf, Yb, Ni, Mn, Co, Fe, H, O, N, C contain. This Matrix products can be formed by decomposition and reaction. E.g. can as Matrix precursor titanium hydride can be used, which decomposes into titanium and hydrogen, whereby it provides the hydrogen needed for diamond stabilization while titanium forms the matrix.
In a first step, powder mixtures of diamond and matrix powders or precursors according to the known state of the art in a polymer vessel on a Planetary ball mill made with different grinding media. In the present case it serves Methanol as a suspension medium. The typical grinding time is 1 hour. The suspension will Poured out on a stainless steel sheet and dried in a drying cabinet at 70 ° C. Subsequently the result is a soft powder that can be filled into the graphite matrix without further treatment can. An embodiment of the method can consist in that the powder is cold pressed beforehand becomes.
In a second step, the diamond composite powders are thermally influenced by plasma compacted: The graphite components are slurried with slurry before charging Hexagonal boron nitride thinly coated as far as it comes into contact with the sample material come and dried. The composite press tool containing the powder is in the plasma sintering system, which is then locked airtight. The plant is up on evacuated a pressure of <0.3 kPa and adequate by purging with inert gas several times Way of residual oxygen, before hydrogen with a pressure of 10 kPa (at a Flow rate of approx. 0.3-1 l / min - based on normal pressure). In general a uniaxial pressure of 20-30 MPa is applied at the beginning of the process, accordingly usual hot pressing practices. The temperature is determined by the pulsed direct current Approximately linear in 1 or 2 steps in approx. 7-10 min to maximum temperature. It should be borne in mind that the sample is both heated by the resistance heating of the stamp and matrix, as is also heated by the spark-induced plasma within the sample. The temperature measured by the thermocouple and used for control is therefore around 50 ° C lower than that actually present within the sample. Temperatures are in the following corrected accordingly. The holding time at maximum temperature is usually 5-10 min. Then the temperature is quickly lowered to 900 ° C in 1-2 minutes before the Load is reduced to 0 MPa within 5-10 min.
The third step, depending on the requirements of the matrix material, for hydrogen and materials, insensitive to thermal shock, a quick cooling materials sensitive to thermal shock have a slow cooling phase of 1-2 hours or, in order to reduce the hydrogen content of the material, in a known manner Heat treatment inside or later outside the sintering plant.
An embodiment of the method can consist in that the matrix material or a Component of the matrix material not introduced as a powder and with the diamond powder is mixed but placed as a solid disc or powder outside the diamond material is so that it can infiltrate the diamond body when melting. In a first step the temperature can be brought to about 900-1150 ° C, with a superficial sticking or welding the diamond particles forms a more or less solid skeleton. In one second step is the temperature for melt infiltration up to about 30-50 ° C above Brought melting point of the matrix material. The rest of the procedure is as above described.
Furthermore, an embodiment of the method can consist in that the diamond is not in uniform concentration is distributed in the composite material, but a concentration profile parallel to the uniaxial pressing direction. The production takes place in a for Gradient materials known way. This usually requires the generation of a Temperature gradients during the sintering process in the pressing direction, what by Stamp materials of different electrical conductivity or by a different one Wall thickness of the press die can be achieved.
Die relative Dichte des Verbundwerkstoffes ist größer als 98%.Coarse-grained, South African natural diamond with an average particle size of 200 µm is mixed according to the above-mentioned method with titanium powder (average particle size 6 µm, oxygen content less than or equal to 1%) in a volume ratio of 1: 3. TiC balls with a diameter of 3-6 mm are used as grinding media. The appropriately prepared press die is filled 7 mm high with the powder mixture and placed in the plasma sintering system with the punches. Stamps with the grooves described above are used. The hydrogen pressure in the sintering chamber is set to 10 kPa at an average flow rate of 0.3 l / min. A load corresponding to 20 MPa is applied. In a first stage, the mixture is heated to 600 ° C. in 10 minutes, then the temperature in 4 minutes. increased to the maximum temperature of 1220 ° C. The holding time is 6 minutes before cooling down to 900 ° C in 1 minute. The hydrogen supply is stopped and the sintering chamber is evacuated (0.2-0.3 kPa) before the load and temperature are reduced as described after a 30-minute hold time. The sintered sample is in a 4 mm thick disc. The structure is characterized by very low grain growth of the Ti matrix. A very small TiC 1-x reaction zone significantly smaller than 0.5 µm occurs irregularly on the diamond surface. Graphite cannot be detected using Raman spectroscopy. The relative density of the composite is greater than 98%.
The aforementioned diamond-titanium mixture is cleaned in the press die for 6 hours Hydrogen atmosphere (0.1 MPa) annealed at 400 ° C, to a high degree Titanium hydride forms. Titanium hydride accelerates the sintering process and reduces the necessary one Sintering temperature. After charging, the sintering chamber is evacuated to about 0.1 kPa. How in example 1 the load of 20 MPa is first applied. In 11 min to 1150 ° C heated and held for 5 min. The load and temperature are reduced as in Example 1, however only with 5 min hold time at 900 ° C. The material is placed in a vacuum oven after removal dehydrated at a pressure of 0.1 Pa and a temperature of 600 ° C for 6 hours.
Characteristic of this process is one in comparison to Example 1 with a similar matrix structure hardly recognizable reaction between diamond and titanium. The special advantage of this Process control lies in a reduced grinding resistance of this material and one reduced tendency of the diamond grains to break out.
Danach erfolgt ein kontrollierter Abkühlvorgang über 1 Stunde bis 150°C.Fine-grained, ground synthetic diamond with an average grain size of 6 µm and The smallest metal inclusions are in a ratio of 1: 4 zirconium oxide powder stabilized with yttrium (3 mol%), which has an average grain size of 0.3 µm and a purity of 99.9% mixed and prepared method described above. 4-6 mm large serve as grinding medium Zirconia balls. The press die is filled as in Example 1 and into the sintering chamber posed. A load corresponding to 28 MPa is applied. After rinsing the sintering chamber a hydrogen atmosphere of 5 kPa is set with an average flow rate of 0.3 l / min (based on normal pressure). The maximum temperature of 1300 ° C is reached in 7 minutes heated up. The holding time is 11 minutes before the temperature reaches 900 ° C within one minute is reduced. The uniaxial pressure is then reduced to 0 MPa within 10 minutes. This is followed by a controlled cooling process over 1 hour up to 150 ° C.
The composite material thus produced with a rel. Density of <98% is extreme Wear resistance with good mechanical strength. Signs of graphitization are with Raman spectroscopy was not observed. The matrix is fine-grained with a medium grain size of about 0.4 µm. The material is excellent for drawing dies for synthetic fibers and Cutting tools suitable for machining.
Synthetic diamond with an average grain size of 60 µm and cuboctahedral Grain morphology and minimal metal inclusions are evenly 3 mm high in the Press die filled and leveled. Below the diamond layer there is a 0.3 mm thick one Molybdenum sheet for insulation of the lower stamp. There will be about one above the diamond layer 2 mm thick silicon wafer (99.9% purity) put on. There is a 2nd Molybdenum sheet that shields the upper stamp against the silicon. This configuration will placed in the sintering chamber, as in Example 1, a hydrogen atmosphere of 10 kPa at a Flow rate of 0.3 l / min (based on normal pressure) and a uniaxial pressure of 30 MPa applied. The die is heated to 1150 ° C in 11 minutes and there for 30 minutes held. In this phase the diamond particles begin to weld, which is a moderately stable one Diamond skeleton created. The temperature is then raised to 1480 ° C. in 2 minutes and there Held for 30 seconds so that the silicon melts and the diamond skeleton infiltrates. Subsequently the temperature is reduced to 800 ° C., the uniaxial pressure is reduced to 0 MPa in 10 min, and then cooling the sample by natural cooling. This distinguishes the sample from the fact that it is completely infiltrated and has only formed SiC to a small extent. Through the pronounced diamond-diamond grain boundaries, the material has a very good thermal conductivity on.
Through targeted mixing of diamond powders of different grain sizes and even, cubic or cuboctahedral form, as is technically known, Reach diamond grain fillings or pellets with only 10 vol% pore space. The Combination of welding the diamonds together and infiltrating one Powdered bodies with a molten metal thus produce highly heat-conducting composites.
