Abstract
Description
In addition to static force microscopy, dynamic force microscopy has proven itself as a non-destructive method for the sensitive imaging of the topography and other physical properties of surfaces such as elasticity and friction with spatial resolution down to atomic dimensions (0.1 nm). The interaction of an oscillating nano-probe with the surface of a sample is exploited ( Fig. 1a). By means of vibration excitation, e.g. B. by a piezoelectric element, a vibrating element is vibrated perpendicular or parallel to the surface. The nano-probe is located at the foremost end of the vibrating element. The oscillation amplitude can be varied via the amplitude of an excitation voltage. The vibrations are excited in or near the mechanical resonance frequency of the vibrating element. At small distances between the nano-probe and the sample, local interactions (such as friction and force gradients) between the nano-probe and the surface cause a change in i) the oscillation amplitude and ii) the resonance frequency. For the mapping of local surface properties, the sample is scanned line by line by the nano-probe using a raster unit and an image is recorded synchronously. The measurement of i) and ii) via a vibration detector enables the determination of the probe-sample distance and, together with a distance control, the mapping of topographical and other physical surface properties. The distance control serves to compensate for the changes in distance that occur during the line-shaped rastering of the probe over the sample by means of an actuating element. The necessary adjustment of the sample is registered as a topographical image signal. Various methods of vibration excitation and distance measurement based on the vibration amplitude and the resonance frequency are described in detail below. The processes explained under I) and II) represent the prior art used or have already been described. The methods presented under IIIa) -IIIc) are our invention.
The most common type of dynamic force microscopy is used in the atomic force microscope (AFM) and in shear force microscopy in the scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM). In the AFM the vibrating element is a bending beam (cantilever) that vibrates perpendicular to the sample surface, in the SNOM it is a glass fiber that extends parallel to the surface and extends to a point. Typical resonance frequencies of these vibrating elements are 30 kHz-300 kHz depending on the material and geometry. Compared to static force microscopy, very soft and sensitive surfaces can be imaged using dynamic methods, despite relatively hard vibrating elements, without the surface changing. An external oscillator ( Fig. 1b), the frequency of which is set to a fixed value at or near the resonance frequency of the free-swinging vibrating element, excites vibrations of the vibrating element with a predetermined frequency and excitation amplitude (forced vibrations). The shift in the resonance frequency due to the interaction between the probe and the sample surface causes a change in a) the amplitude of the oscillation of the oscillating element and b) the phase (based on the phase of the excitation voltage) at a fixed excitation frequency. The value of the amplitude and phase change of the vibration, and thus the measurement sensitivity, increases with the mechanical quality of the vibrating element. The time that passes before a constant amplitude and phase have returned after a change in the interaction (settling time) also increases with increasing quality. For the quality there are lower and upper limits with regard to sensitive but also fast measurements. The vibration of the vibrating element is recorded with an optical, electrical or piezoelectric vibration detector. Amplitude and phase are usually measured with a lock-in amplifier and kept constant at an amplitude or phase setpoint during the screening with the distance control.
Instead of using an external oscillator with a fixed frequency, in this mode the oscillation of the cantilever of an AFM is maintained by positive feedback ( Fig. 2a). The vibration of the cantilever is recorded and amplified with a vibration detector. The amplification factor is regulated using a multiplier.
An adjustable phase shifter generates a signal that is used to excite vibrations. This Circle represents a self-excited oscillator, which with a suitable setting of the phase and sufficiently high gain independently with the mechanical resonance frequency of the Swinging element swings. The gain factor (multiplier) and thus the amplitude the vibration excitation is controlled by an amplitude control so that the amplitude des Cantilevers, d. H. the vibration amplitude remains constant [Omicron].
In a variant of this method ( Fig. 2b), a limiter is used to generate a signal which has the same frequency and phase as the vibration signal and whose amplitude can be set independently of the vibration amplitude of the cantilever. In this case, the amplitude of the excitation voltage is constant. This method has the advantage that the power coupled into the oscillating element does not increase rapidly if the oscillation is excessively damped by the probe-sample interaction.
In both cases, the frequency of the vibration is measured with the help of an FM demodulator.
The frequency shift due to the probe-sample interaction at small distances versus the free-swinging case serves as a measure of distance and physical Surface properties.
Our invention is that instead of the FM demodulator in II) by means of a AM demodulator measured the amplitude and used as a measure of the distance. Measurements show that even in the case of the self-excited oscillator, i.e. H. upon suggestion in the (from Distance dependent) resonance frequency of the vibrating element, at constant Excitation amplitude the vibration amplitude of that of the vibrating element by the probe Sample interaction is affected and can be used as a distance measure. Here a resolution that is at least as good as that is achieved under otherwise identical conditions with the method of conventional dynamic force microscopy. One reason is attenuation or increase in the quality of the achieved by the positive feedback Vibration, which results in increased sensitivity to influences of the probe sample Interaction expresses without a longer settling time. A practical one The advantage of the method compared to I) (forced vibration) is that the self-excited oscillator automatically vibrates at its resonant frequency. Visiting the Resonance frequency by tuning the external oscillator is eliminated. Further is that Use of a lock-in amplifier for amplitude measurement is unnecessary.
In our invention, the glass fiber drawn out to a point is in the shear force microscope or SNOM brought to self-excited vibrations parallel to the surface. The amplitude the vibration is determined during the screening, as described under IIIa), by the Distance control kept constant. The difficulty with measurements under water is that already inevitable small changes in the water layer, as z. B. by Evaporation or mechanical vibrations occur, a change in the resonant frequency cause. In the process described under I), however, causes a change in Resonance frequency an amplitude change that does not allow stable distance control. Out the same reason is a transfer of the AFM method described under II) to Shear force microscopy under water unsuitable because there the resonance frequency as a measure of the Probe-sample distance is used. The advantage of the self-excited oscillator in combination with the amplitude measurement in that a change in the resonance frequency a has negligible influence on the vibration amplitude. At the same time, the Feedback increases the quality of the vibrations. With this method one is on the principle stable topographic image of a water-covered surface based on the shear force detection Successful surface.
In our invention, an adjustable electronic bandpass filter is placed in front of the amplifier switched.
Vibrating elements such as cantilevers and glass fibers have in addition to the fundamental frequency at which it is only there is an antinode, namely at the end of the vibrating element, also higher resonance Frequencies. By a suitable choice of the pass band of the filter, the vibration of the mechanical resonance of the vibrating element is suppressed and a higher mechanical Vibration mode stimulated. The advantage of this method is that, together with the Self-excitation method with conventional vibrating elements at higher frequencies To be able to measure probe-sample interaction and at the same time settling times shorten what ultimately allows faster images.
