Method and device for two-dimensionally local and temporally high-resolution determination of the Drop size and drop size distribution in two-phase flows.
There are a number of commercial methods for determining drop sizes in liquid sprays available measurement method with regard to temporal and spatial resolution of the measurement signal Have advantages and disadvantages. In all optical methods, light that is in the with the Measuring volume interacts particles, detected. Widespread procedures are phase Doppler anemometry [1-2] and Malvern technique [3]. Both techniques deliver a time-averaged droplet size spectrum at a point or along a line in the Spray jet. To use these measuring techniques to create a locally two-dimensional (plane) or even Maintaining spatial resolution of the drop size spectrum is a multitude of Measurements at different locations in the spray jet necessary. A two-dimensional or spatially resolved quantification of the drop diameter is thus often within one economically reasonable period not possible.
The use of these measurement techniques in unsteady atomization and flow processes is due to the temporal averaging of the measurement signal only possible to a limited extent if the fundamental mechanisms of drop or jet decay should be investigated. A temporally high resolution of the measurement signal requires the use of pulsed light sources or Detectors with adjustable exposure time. The spatial resolution of the drop size is achieved by two- or three-dimensionally extended measurement volumes. The two-dimensional Polarization Mie technology basically offers these possibilities of measuring setup and thus the simultaneous recording of the drop size distribution in one level.
In the polarization Mie technique, the scattered light signal of a drop or drop collective, which is polarized perpendicularly and in parallel with respect to the scattering plane, is detected separately from one another at one point in time. The measuring principle is based on the different dependence of the scattered light intensities polarized parallel and perpendicular to the scattering plane on the drop size to be determined. Fig. 1 illustrates the different dependencies of the intensities of both scattered light components on the drop size for a water spray. The intensity of the scattered light polarized parallel to the scattering plane is directly proportional to the drop diameter, while the intensity profile of the perpendicularly polarized scattering component shows a quadratic dependence [4]. The ratio of vertically and parallel polarized scattered light intensity, the so-called polarization ratio γ, thus depends linearly on the drop diameter, but not on the intensity of the incident light. Accordingly, with this method the size of the drops in a spray jet can be determined without calibration, since the formation of the polarization ratio enables the elimination of a number of structure constants of the measuring system. Only the optical components used in the measuring system (e.g. lenses, beam splitters, polarizers) and electronic components (e.g. CCD chip, image processing card) must be examined and calibrated before use with regard to the transmission and reflection behavior or the electronic transmission behavior will. If these sizes are known, the measuring system can be used to determine the drop sizes in the atomization of liquids with a known relative complex refractive index m.
The course of the polarization ratio can be calculated using theoretical equations become. The drop size is then measured by comparing the Polarization ratio with that calculated over a wide drop size range γ course determined. The scattering of monochromatic, flat, linearly polarized light spherical, homogeneous particles are described by Mie theory [4-7].
The Mie scattered light process is one of the elastic scattered light processes, ie the wavelength λ of the incident light coincides with that of the scattered light. If the relatively complex refractive index m of a drop with the diameter D is known, the parallel and perpendicularly polarized scattered light powers of the drop for light with the wavelength λ can be calculated under a scattering angle θ:
Ps,i(D) = I0,jCij(m,D,λ,θ) (1)
P s, i (D) = I 0, j C ij (m, D, λ, θ) (1)
P s is the power of the scattered light and I 0 is the intensity of the incident monochromatic, flat light. The indices i, j relate to the polarization state of the incident and scattered light. C ij is called the scattering cross section of the drop.
Das Polarisationsverhältnis γ berechnet sich daraus zu
The polarization ratio γ is calculated from this
The course of the scattered light output over the drop size is highly resonant when scattering monochromatic light for non- or weakly absorbing substances ( Fig. 1). The calculated polarization ratio is therefore not a strictly monotonically increasing function of the drop diameter, which is why its size cannot be clearly determined by measuring γ of an individual drop. Since the scattered light output is a function of particle size D, wavelength λ and scattering angle θ in addition to the relative complex refractive index m, there are basically three different ways of averaging the course of the polarization ratio in order to enable a clear assignment of polarization ratio and drop diameter:
The scattered light signal of the drops is within a wide scattering angle range detected.
The polarization ratio γ of a drop size distribution is determined. This Method allows the determination of the mean drop diameter of the distribution, if the width of the assumed distribution function is known.
The scattering particles in the measuring volume are excited with broadband light. The stray light has the same spectral distribution as the incident light. The drop size from individual drops in the light beam can be determined.
The polarization Mie technique as a tool for determining drop sizes in Two-phase flows have already been discussed in the literature [8-13]:
In Refs. [8-9] describes ways in which the polarization ratio of Droplet size distributions measured point-wise within a wide range of scattering angles can be. Local resolution of the drop sizes in the spray jet, however, requires Compared to two-dimensional measuring methods, it takes a lot of time.
In Refs. [10-12] the smoothing of the resonant γ curve is achieved in that the Scattering particles with light that has a broad spectral distribution (FWHM = 16 nm), be stimulated. The average course of the polarization ratio is strictly monotonous, whereby a clear assignment of polarization ratio and drop diameter is made possible. The drop size of individual drops can be determined by this method become. For example, the use of a pulsed monochromatic Light source with a short pulse duration (e.g. Nd: YAG laser) as the pump laser of a broadband Dye laser the detection of the drops in the light plane to a solid Time. A temporally and spatially high-resolution measurement of the drop sizes in the two-dimensional space is possible. The measurement error is specified as ± 10%. This method however requires compared to scattered light measurements with a monochromatic radiation source a complex measurement setup, since in addition to the detection of the scattered light signal Intensity profile and the spectral distribution of the laser light must be determined.
By Ryan et al. [13] the averaging of the polarization ratio curve in Art performed that the polarization ratio of an underlying drop size distribution is measured. Different empirical and mathematical distribution functions will be examined for their suitability to describe the real existing conditions. The However, the average droplet diameter can only be determined if the width the assumed distribution is known since the course of the polarization ratio is one Drop size distribution is a function of the mean drop diameter and the width of the Distribution is. In the method described in Ref. [13], the unknown width of the Drop size distribution determined using a PDA system. To do this, on The drop size distribution is measured at various points in the liquid spray jet and by adapting the underlying distribution function to the measured distribution unknown distribution width determined. This method requires a high time and equipment effort to obtain a spatial resolution of the drop sizes, because in addition to the polarization ratio measurements PDA measurements on a variety of Points in the spray must be performed.
unterschiedliche Arten:
Based on an experimental setup such as B. is also presented in Ref. [13], the invention is based on the determination of the distribution width of the distribution function to be used which is possible and thus implemented simultaneously with the actual measurement. In contrast to Ref. [13], an additional measurement with other measurement methods (e.g. PDA, Malvern technique) with which the time-averaged droplet size distribution can be measured directly is no longer necessary. A prerequisite for the determination of the initially unknown distribution width is the locally high-resolution measurement of the intensities of the scattered light polarized parallel and perpendicular with respect to the scattering plane, that is to say that the exposed camera pixels must be clearly assignable to individual drops on the scattered light images detected for both components. The corresponding polarization ratio can thus be determined for each drop detected, in two different ways:
-
1. The mean value of the polarization ratio of all N drops detected in the examination volume is determined according to
-
2. The polarization ratio is determined from the ratio of the vertically and parallel polarized stray light powers of all detected drops
By comparing the polarization ratios calculated according to equations (3) and (4), the searched width of the examined drop size distribution can be determined. γ vert, 10 and γ vert, 21 have different values due to the fluctuations in the courses of the scattered light intensities. They therefore assume characteristic values for a given drop size distribution with a certain average diameter and width. As the distribution becomes wider, the difference between the γ values calculated with both methods increases. Fig. 2 illustrates this difference using the example of a distribution of water drops using theoretically calculated curves of γ vert, 10 and γ vert, 21 for a logarithmically normally distributed drop size distribution. If a two-phase flow can be described by a distribution function with two variables, the invention allows the measurement of the polarization ratios γ vert, 10 and γ vert, 21 of the drop distribution to determine these unknown quantities.
The method can be used for any distribution function with two variables (e.g. characteristic diameter and standard deviation).
In the following, the use of the novel method presented here is exemplified on a water spray atomized with a two-substance nozzle. A structure according to Fig. 3 is used for this.
A frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser with a wavelength of γ = 532 nm and a pulse duration of approx. 10 ns. The use of a delay plate enables the linear polarization to be 45 ° with respect to the scattering plane of the laser light rotate. The laser light becomes a light section with a combination of optical lenses any height and thickness shaped and directed by the axis of the spray jet. The Scattered light signal of the drops located in the measuring plane is at an angle of 90 ° detected to the direction of propagation of the laser light. With a beam splitter that is a 1: 1 Reflection-transmission ratio, the scattered light on two CCD cameras pictured. Polarizers in front of the camera lenses enable the detection of the Scattered light polarized perpendicularly or parallel to the scattering plane at the same time.
According to the invention, the comparison of the polarization ratios of the distribution ( Fig. 2) calculated according to equations (3) and (4) and the measured γ vert, 10 and γ vert, 21 provides the values characteristic for the selected distribution function (average diameter and distribution width ). An additional measurement with another technique (e.g. PDA, Malvern) is no longer necessary, which means that a small amount of time and equipment is required to quantify the existing droplet size spectrum.
Due to the time-resolved determination of the drop sizes, the Polarization Mie technology especially for the characterization of unsteady two-phase currents tion processes, e.g. B. the liquid atomization in process and combustion systems.
