Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an image system for a medical Diagnostic device for displaying medical images but by means of a playback device with a picture for pixel-by-pixel storage of the data from the diagnostics no direction generated image signals of the images and with a Circuit for transforming gray values of the image signal, to which the playback device is connected, and a Process for windowed display of medical images other. The invention addresses the problem of automatic gray Value window in the visualization of digitized me medical images, for example from Röntgenbil in digital radiography. The gray value window is the Transformation of a gray value area in the image memory X-ray image in another gray value range. The purpose of the gray value window is the dynamic adjustment of the di gitalized image to the output medium such as monitor or Laser printer. It makes sense to adapt the dynamics not for the entire picture, but only for the relevant, object-containing image part.
Such image systems can be used, for example, in X-ray slide gnostics find an image converter to convert the x-ray image into an electrical analog Signal sequence, an image or video signal have. One of the like image converter can for example a television camera or an imaging plate. Let such imaging systems but also in computed tomography (CT) or magnet use resonance (MR), the digital output signals point.
Since medical imaging systems are generally digitally trained det, the analog image signals of the X-ray diagnosis Stikeinrichtung in an analog / digital converter (A / D converter) converted into digital values in that the x-ray image in different picture elements (pixels) are broken down, which differ whose digital gray values are assigned.
In a digital imaging system, the digital image signal can processed and via a digital / analog converter (D / A converter) reproduced on a monitor as a visible image will give.
Digital medical images of computer tomography (CT), Magnetic resonance (MR) or X-ray (DFR, DSA) can be done with a Accuracy of 10 bits per pixel, for example be generated. These pictures are usually the user for assessment and diagnosis on a television Screen shown as gray images. Such medical In many cases, images have a different dynamic than that maximum dynamics of the output medium.
This will now be explained in more detail using an example in conjunction with FIG. 3. It is assumed that in the part of the X-ray image that is relevant to the image, the actual object dynamics of an X-ray image digitized with 10 bits (0 ... 1023) can only be determined by the gray values from 341 (minimum value = lower window limit) to 853 (maximum value = upper window limit) extends. It is also assumed that the output medium can display gray values from 0 to a maximum of 1023 (10 bits). An optimal gray value window ensures that this gray value range from 341 to 853 is spread over the gray value range from 0 to 1023 by the circuit for transforming gray values of the image signal, the input of which the video signals are fed, so that the object now has the maximum possible dynamics of the output medium. The transformed gray value range is then at the output of this circuit.
So far, the gray value window of Hand using actuators and interactive, d. H. under the same early observation of the monitor image. In the US-A-4,827,492 is such a manual device Description of the window, with two controls for the On position of the window are provided. It is with the egg NEN control the window width and with the other the Window center, the upper or the lower window limit poses. To save time and costs in routine clinical operation save, however, an automatic gray value window is ge wishes.
The main problem for an automatic system is the relevan interesting parts of the picture from the rest of the picture such as fades and glare, as they often appear in x-rays. Minimum (lower window limit) and maximum gray value (upper window limit) of the separated, relevant image rich can then be used as parameters for an optimal gray value window can be used. If the separation is not good works well either by including Fade in and overexposure in the gray value window incorrectly too high an object dynamic (in the above case game less than 341 to greater than 853), which is too weak contrasts in the object, or interesting image areas rich are classified as not relevant, so that it leads to Ab cuts in the object is coming. In the first case one speaks of a window that is too wide, in the second case too narrow Window.
A common method of automatic windowing in X-ray systems the use of so-called organ is Keys. Here it is assumed that same types of exposure as for example lung, hand or Shoulder shots also result in approximately the same object dynamics ben. The user therefore presses the ent before recording speaking organ key and thus tells the system what to expect object dynamics. The gray value window happens here by preset, matched to each type of recording, empirically determined parameters.
A disadvantage here is the high operating effort by organ keys. Also stick to those previously determined Parameters individually different recording conditions not taken into account, so that such gray value windows are not can be optimal.
In US 5,351,306 a method is described in which by determining statistical parameters in elongated, the position of the evaluation fields arranged parallel to the edge of the image of overlays can be found. In that Radiations are disregarded and rotated fade-in can not be recognized, you get with a derar windowing is not always optimal.
From US-A-5,150,421 a method is known in which the Histo described and well known in the literature grammage compensation (gray value equalization, equal distribution of the Gray values) is carried out in a slightly modified form. At this non-linear gray value transformation is also a restriction to the relevant image area is necessary. This is due to the different weighting of the individual pi xel solved. It is assumed that fade in and over radiation are extremely bright or dark, as well as mainly can be found on the edges of the picture. Pixel close to the edge of the picture like this like with extreme gray values for the histogram compensation weighted less than those closer to the picture are in the middle or have less extreme gray values. Des object contour recognition is also proposed, the on the detection of rough gray value changes in the image ba sieren.
Such a method has the disadvantages that these non-linear gray value transformation changes the character of the image different. Furthermore, the assumption that rele vante image areas are always close to the center of the image like no extreme gray values. In addition, Fade-ins through object contour recognition only through Detection of rough gray value changes in the image without further Do not reliably recognize measures.
Another option for an automatic system is to report the Position of the overlays from the X-ray machine to the processing image system. However, this requires a higher level of technology effort. Furthermore, it only works with image systems men who are directly connected to the X-ray machine and the can process the message of the aperture position. Will be against the image is sent to other image systems via networks, so this method cannot be used. Besides, who the possible overexposure is not taken into account.
The invention is based on the object of an image system to create the type mentioned above, which makes it possible to optimal gray value window of the entire image automatically perform without losing the essential details can.
The object is achieved in that on the Image memory a selection circuit is connected, which in gray values lying within an evaluation window are determined, that with the selection circuit a calculation circuit for determination the minimum and maximum values of the selected gray values is connected to a detector for changing the Mini times and maximum values is connected, its output signal of a threshold for the size of the change the minimum and maximum values are supplied, and that the Threshold circuit on the arithmetic circuit and a tax Device for the selection circuit for controlling the size of the evaluation window is connected, which is designed in this way are that the evaluation window below the threshold enlarged by the control device and above the Threshold the previous ones determined by the arithmetic circuit Minimum and maximum values as window limits of the circuit for the transformation of gray values. Thereby the evaluation window is enlarged as long until it only contains all the image-relevant parts. In Within this evaluation window, the Er averaging of the minimum and maximum values without problems determine death limits.
It has proven to be advantageous if the selection scarf tion is designed such that the certain initial Evaluation window is in the middle of the picture. He can According to the invention, the evaluation window is square be. But it can also have a rectangular shape where with the enlargement in horizontal and vertical direction at different speeds.
A particularly precise determination of the evaluation window is obtained one if the selection circuit is designed such that the magnifications of the evaluation window in each direction separately.
According to the invention, the object is also achieved by a method for the windowed display of medical images with the following steps:
- i. Bestimmung eines Auswertefenster,i. Determination of an evaluation window,
- ii. Determination of the minimum and the maximum of the gray values within the evaluation window,
- iii. schrittweise Vergrößerung des Auswertefensters und Er mittelung der Minimal- und Maximalwerte, iii. gradual enlargement of the evaluation window and Er averaging the minimum and maximum values,
- iv. Detektion der Änderung der Minimal- und Maximalwerteiv. Detection of changes in the minimum and maximum values
- v. Compare the change in minimum and maximum values with a threshold,
- vi. liegen die Änderungen der Minimal- und Maximalwerte un terhalb des Schwellwertes, Wiederholung ab Schritt III., vi. there are changes in the minimum and maximum values below the threshold value, repetition from step III.
- vii. Setting the previous minimum and maximum values as the window boundaries of the gray value range in the event of changes, which are as the threshold.
According to the invention, the evaluation window can be determined start in the middle of the picture. Optionally, the gradual enlargement of the evaluation window in all four Directions are done simultaneously or separately.
It has proven beneficial if the step size enlarging the evaluation window ten pixels is.
With a rectangular form of evaluation according to the invention the gradual enlargement of the evaluation window sters in horizontal and vertical direction different have increments. Get a simple procedure one if the evaluation window is square.
A reliable determination of the window boundaries can be achieved Chen if to detect the change in the minimum and maximum the first derivative of the curve of the minimum and maximum values of the window boundaries is formed.

A selection circuit 12 is also connected to the image memory 10 and determines an evaluation window and determines gray values lying within this evaluation window. The selection circuit 12 is connected to a computing circuit 13 for determining the minimum and maximum values of the selected gray values. A detector 14 is connected to the arithmetic circuit 13 , which detects the change in the minimum and maximum values and generates a corresponding output signal which is fed to a threshold value circuit 15 . The threshold value circuit 15 compares the size of the changes in the minimum and maximum values with predetermined threshold values.
The output of the threshold circuit 15 is connected to the arithmetic circuit 13 and a control device 16 connected to the selection circuit 12 for controlling the size of the evaluation window.
If the output signal of the detector 14 is below a threshold, the evaluation window is gradually increased by the control device 16 . If, on the other hand, the output signal exceeds the threshold, the evaluation window is no longer enlarged and the previous minimum and maximum values determined by the arithmetic circuit 13 are fed as window limits to the circuit 11 for transforming gray values.
The method according to the invention is based on a very simple algorithm and can essentially be used for chest images. Such a picture is shown for example in FIG. 4. In addition to the image-relevant parts, the heart and lungs, overexposure 18 and overlays 19 can also be seen in the x-ray image 17 .
Assuming that the patient 4 is positioned correctly, most of the relevant dynamic range is already in the center of the image. A simple min / max evaluation in the center of the image is a rough approximation of an optimal gray value window. Only object dynamics are taken into account, but not overexposure 18 and overlays 19 present at the image edges. This evaluation can be carried out as Step 1 for example in a picture of 1024 within a central evaluation window 400 2, shown in Fig. 5.
In order to come from this rough approximation to an optimal gray value window, the evaluation window is now gradually increased according to the invention, for example in 10 pixel steps in all 4 directions. Thus, results with play, by the step 7 which comprises the evaluation window in Fig. 6, after the 10th step shown in FIG. 7, and after the 13th step in Fig. 8 represented. The minimum and maximum values shown in FIG. 9 are determined after each step.
In the x-ray image according to FIG. 6, as in FIG. 5, only parts relevant to the image can be seen, as can also be seen from the almost linear window boundaries 20 and 21 of FIG. 9. In the 10th X-ray image shown in FIG. 7, overexposure 18 can be seen which cause the lower window limit 20 to drop. In the X-ray image of the 13th step shown in FIG. 8, overlays 19 can be seen which result in a displacement of the upper window boundary 21 .
In Fig. 9, the minimum and maximum values determined in the respective Auswertefenstergröße are shown, which correspond to the lower and the upper window boundary 20 and 21. These forms are typical of all chest images. It can be clearly seen that the minimum and maximum values change only slowly when the evaluation window is enlarged. Only when overexposure 18 or overlays 19 is a sudden change in one of the window boundaries 20 or 21 to be observed. The values immediately before the sudden change - labeled 22 and 23 in the diagram - can be regarded as the optimal window limits. At these points, the evaluation window covers the vast majority of the thorax without already including overexposure 18 or overlays 19 . An automatic therefore only has to examine the curves from left to right for the amount of the 1st derivative. If this amount exceeds the corresponding threshold value, the window value is found.
The choice of this threshold is not critical since the loading sluggish the 1st derivative when reaching overexposure or Increase the display drastically.
The method according to the invention can be modified even further in order to be able to determine the window boundaries even more precisely nen.
For this purpose, a rectangle can be used instead of a square one shape of the evaluation window and different sizes speed in horizontal and vertical directions use.
Furthermore, according to the invention, the step-by-step enlargement not in all 4 directions at the same time, but in each Direction individually with subsequent determination of minimum and maximum values.
