Description
The invention relates to the field of level indicators. It goes out of a method and a device for level measurement according to the Preamble of claims 1 and 10.
A large number of methods and devices for Determination of the level of a container known to be very low different physical measurement principles are based. These include electrical cal (capacitive or resistive) and optical methods, radar reflection method , ultrasonic transit time methods and gamma absorption methods.
So-called separation tanks are used in offshore oil production which the different Pha (sand, water, oil and gas) due to their density differences in separate, superimposed layers are separated. It is very important that Know the level of the interface between the water and oil to be on the tank The drain valves for the two media open and close in a controlled manner can. Reliable level gauges are required for this. Function niert such a level meter or not properly, z. B. Oil in get out of the water and cause great environmental pollution and costs stuff.
Separation tanks have recently been developed for use on the Seabed some 100 m below the surface of the sea are suitable. The Oil can then be extracted from water, sand, etc. separated and only then with much less energy to the ocean surface to be pumped. The requirements for such separator tanks are however very high. You need the water pressure at the seabed and outside inside the pressure of the extracted crude oil of typically 60-180 bar and tempera withstand temperatures of 50-120 ° C. The level measurement system is also this subjected to difficult operating conditions. Nevertheless, it will take years Functionality, extensive freedom from maintenance and extremely reliable guaranteed, as a breakdown and early replacement are exorbitant Would incur costs.
The level measurement must therefore have at least two redundant systems be performed. In an earlier, unpublished German Pa Tent registrations (file number 197 04 975.3) is considered a solution to this pro blems proposed a capacitive measuring probe, which is particularly large Jump in dielectric constant at the interface between oil and Makes use of water. The advantage over those available on the market Systems exist. a. in that the measuring probe is self-contained, that Measures the surrounding medium without contact via the stray capacitance and on it Way determines the level.
As an additional redundant measurement method, a density meter is used in particular solution by absorbing gamma rays. There are commercial ones devices with a gamma source (cesium, cobalt, etc.) and one Scintillator (NaJ with thallium doping (NaJ: Tl), plastic, etc.) as a gamma detector. The gamma emitter sends high-energy photons from its core or gamma rays that are absorbed in matter. The absorption depends exponentially from the irradiated length, the absorption coefficient zient - at least for monoenergetic gamma rays - is proportional to the density. The gamma quantum generates a shower of photo in the scintillation detector in the visible or neighboring spectral range. The photons are from a light detector (photomultiplier, PIN photodiode, etc.) in an electri signal implemented. As an alternative to the scintillator, a Geiger-Müller can also be used Counter tube can be used. For the level measurement the Source and scintillation detector on opposite walls of the Sepa Ratortanks moved synchronously up and down and that vertical density Profile of the tank contents added. The density differences become the Positions of the interfaces between the different media determined. A Disadvantage of this system is that it is only for low pressure separators tanks on the sea surface is suitable because the mechanics are monitored and must be maintained and the extreme demands placed on the Operational safety is difficult to achieve.
According to FIG. 1, it is furthermore state of the art to implement a density profile sensor without moving parts, in that pairs of gamma emitters and detectors are arranged at vertical intervals and the fill level of the differently absorbing media is determined from their gamma transmission values.
There are also scintillation detectors with one- or two-dimensional spatial resolution solution and are offered on the market. Szintillato are available ren in the form of rods, the z. B. NaJ: Tl included. The scintillations light waves emanating from lightning are detected at both ends of the rod and off the ratio of their decreasing exponentially with the optical path length Intensities or pulse heights of the location of the gamma photon absorption are determined. Also with plastic fibers in flat parallel or crossed arrangement position resolving scintillators are realized. As from the WO 85/04 959 is known, the location information is obtained simply by that fiber or fibers that identify a scintilla are identified tion flash to a photodetector.
The object of the present invention is a gamma ray density profile specify a sensor for a system and a method for level measurement, which is characterized by good vertical spatial resolution and a simplified very robust construction. This object is achieved by the features of claims 1 and 10 solved.
The essence of the invention is namely, compared to an arrangement of several Gamma emitters on a rod-shaped, light-guiding scintillation detector bring and through a photodetector at one or both ends of the Scintillators to detect the gamma rays from several sources together ren. A density profile becomes a function of the counting rate of the scintillation flashes the transit time difference of those spreading in opposite directions Light components determined. The vertical spatial resolution is essentially by the distance between the gamma emitters and their beam angle or the collimation quality.
An embodiment shows a first density profile sensor with two vertically aligned closed tubes for the gamma sources and the scintilla Gate bar, as it is particularly suitable for a separator tank for oil production is not.
Further embodiments provide variants of the scintillator rod single or double-sided photodetector at the ends.
Other exemplary embodiments show measures for re reduction of crosstalk between the gamma sources.
An advantage of the gamma ray density profile sensor according to the invention stands in its reduced complexity and susceptibility to failure. An advantage is before all the simplicity, mechanical robustness and inherent reliability of the scintillator rod or the scintillator fibers compared to conventional ones Gamma detectors.
Another advantage is the fact that there is sufficient spatial resolution the level measurement is feasible because the crosstalk between ver various gamma emitters pushed back by various measures can be.
It is particularly advantageous for one to speak for electrical capacitance measurement dante, also non-contact, and sensitive level measurement method is given, which is based on another, completely independent measuring principle and is largely maintenance-free.

Fig. 2 shows sections of a first embodiment of a gamma-ray density profile sensor according to the Invention. The gamma rays 5 from several radioactive sources or gamma emitters 2 are bundled by transmitting collimators 3 , shine through the medium 6 to be measured and trigger scintillation light flashes 11 in a scintillator 10 with a certain response probability. Due to the special nature of the scintillator 10 as an elongated light guide, scintillation flashes are split into two light portions that spread to both ends of the scintillator. As can be seen from FIG. 3, each light wave is received by a photodetector or photodetector array 14 , 15 , converted into an electrical signal and supplied to measuring electronics 16 via lines 9 . From the measuring electronics 16 in a so-called delayed coincidence measurement, the exact time differences of the pairs of associated photodetector signals are determined. The point of origin of the scintillation flash 11 is determined from the time delay or transit time difference between the two light components and the triggering gamma emitter 2 is identified therefrom. For each time delay or gamma emitter position, the frequency of the light pulses is also counted, which allows the determination of the irradiated medium 6 due to the strong density dependence of the gamma absorption. In particular, the density difference between water 6 a (1015 kg / m 3 ) and oil 6 b (850 kg / m 3 ) is detectable. But gas and sand can also be detected in this way. Thus, the figkeitsverteilung Frequently is the ordered according to their time delay pairs aufeinan derfolgender photodetector signals a direct measure of the density profile of the medium in the separator tank 17th By dynamically determining this frequency distribution, a current density profile can also be measured for a relatively quickly flowing medium and the sedimentation process can be monitored.
Fig. 4 shows a detailed view of another embodiment of the scintillator 10. At the lower end of the scintillator 10 is a retroreflector 18 instead of the photodetector 15 , the z. B. can be designed as a cubic or as a flat mirror. Both from the scintillation flash 11 outgoing light beams are guided in different ways to a single photodetector or photodetector array 14 at the upper end of the scintillator and processed as before by the measuring electronics 16 . Due to the reflection he drives the originally downward wave a stronger damping, but also a greater delay time. This means that the spatial resolution can be doubled. In addition, the scintillator 10 is simplified by the saving of a photodetector 15 and the associated electrical signal line 9 and is particularly well suited for installation locations that are only accessible on one side.
A further embodiment results from FIG. 3 if the scintillator 10 is composed of two rods which are separated by a layer, which is not shown and which reflects on both sides. A scintillator 10 assembled in this way thus has an upper and lower half, in which the light propagation takes place completely independently of one another. The reflective layer is preferably located halfway up the scintillator 10 . In the case of a scintillation event in one scintillator half, the optical pulses are evaluated as in the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 4. The advantage over FIG. 4 is that the light paths are halved with the same spatial resolution and the optical attenuations are thus significantly reduced. In general, determining the location by measuring the transit time instead of comparing the optical attenuations is also advantageous because this method is very insensitive to age-related changes in the optical attenuation in the scintillator 10 .
The absorption of high-energy gamma photons is based on the photo effect, the Compton scattering and the pair generation. In the photo effect, the gam maphoton is completely absorbed by the electron shell of an atom and a preferably strongly bound electron is split off. The electron loses its kinetic energy through further collisions, so that the entire gamma energy E γ is deposited in the medium. Above the strongest binding energy of the electrons, the probability of the photo effect decreases sharply with increasing gamma energy.
The Compton effect becomes dominant in the range between E γ = 100 keV and 1 MeV: When the gamma photon and electron collide, the gamma photon continues to fly at a scattering angle ϑ with the residual energy E γ '(ϑ). With increasing deflection angle ϑ, the relative residual energy of the gamma photon R (ϑ) = E γ '(ϑ) / E γ according to the equation
R(ϑ)=[1+ε.(1-cosϑ)]⁻1 (1)
R (ϑ) = [1 + ε. (1-cosϑ)] ⁻ 1 (1)
ab, wobei ε = Eγ/511 keV das Verhältnis der Gammaenergie zur Ruheenergie des Elektrons bezeichnet.ab, where ε = E γ / 511 keV denotes the ratio of the gamma energy to the rest energy of the electron.
In addition, from 1 MeV, the gamma photon can disintegrate into an electron-positron pair when interacting with the electrical field of an atomic nucleus or an electron. As the atomic number increases, the probabilities for the photo effect and pair formation increase sharply and moderately for the Compton effect. In addition, the absorption coefficient is proportional to the atomic density. The resulting substance-specific density dependence of the gamma absorption is used as a measuring principle in gamma-ray density sensors. Basically, all three processes consuming the gamma energy can also be used as a detection effect in the scintillation detector and as an interference effect, e.g. B. in container walls 4 , 24 , play a role.
The number and spacing of the gamma emitters 2 is chosen so that a density profile of the desired length and spatial resolution can be determined. In general, the gamma emitters 2 are arranged essentially vertically one above the other and preferably equidistantly. If the position of the oil / water boundary layer 6 c is known, a smaller distance between the gamma emitters can be selected in order to locally improve the spatial resolution.
When choosing the radioactive elements for the gamma emitters 2 , the half-life, gamma energy and activity play a particular role. Ge is well suited for. B. 137 Cs with a half-life of 30 years and a mono energetic gamma line at 660 keV. 60 Co with 5.3 years and gamma emission at 1.17 MeV and 1.33 MeV or other emitters and mixtures can also be used. The activity of the sources, ie the number of gam maphotons emitted per second, depends on the amount and probability of decay of the radioactive substance. The activity is chosen so large that one side of the scintillation detector 13 has enough scintillation events per second for an accurate and rapid density determination and, on the other hand, the pairs of successive photodetector signals remain easily distinguishable. The losses due to collimation and gamma absorption on the way to the scintillator 10 and the response probability of the scintillation detector 13 must be taken into account.
The centerpiece of the scintillation detector 13 is the scintillator 10 , which has to detect gamma rays from several gamma emitters 2 . According to the invention, the scintillator has an elongated shape for this purpose, is light-guiding, is optically connected at its ends to photodetectors 14 , 15 and supplies temporally separated light pulses or electrical photodetector signals for a delayed coincidence measurement to the measuring electronics 16 . In the scintillation process, a gamma photon excites the scintillator 10 to emit short scintillating light flashes 11 , the intensity of which is proportional to the deposited energy, through the interaction processes described above. The scintillator 10 can contain an inorganic material, in particular NaI: Tl in crystalline or polycrystalline form, or an organic material in crystalline, liquid or plastic-like form or a preferably doped glass. Important design parameters for a desired scintillator length and spatial resolution are the availability in lengths up to more than 2 m and the mechanical stability, the optical damping and the decay time of the scintillation, ie the optical pulse width. Round or angular rods made of plastic, with NaJ: Tl, furthermore optical fibers or optical fiber bundles, in particular plastic fibers or plastic fiber bundles, or a combination of rods and fibers are particularly suitable. Scintillator rods made of plastic can also be made of several parts in the desired length. U. with optical transition pieces to be glued together. The light guides have typical optical attenuations of approx. 10⁻ 2 cm⁻ 1 . To reduce the loss of light, the rods can be provided with a reflective coating on their outer surface. For a spatial resolution of 10 cm, transit time differences of approximately 1 ns must be detectable, which makes pulse widths in the ns range and below necessary. In particular, plastic scintillators and correspondingly fast photo detectors or photodetector arrays 14 , 15 with a detector surface adapted to the light guide cross section are suitable for this. For reasons of space, PIN photodiodes are preferred.
Finally, a maximum and a minimum optical pulse rate can be specified for the density profile sensor according to the invention. For a scintillator length of 2 m, the maximum transit time difference is 20 ns. A minimum time interval between the pairs of light signals of approx. 0.1 µs then corresponds to a maximum pulse rate of 10 7 s⁻ 1 . With a 20 cm scintillator length, the maximum value is 10 8 s⁻ 1. On the other hand, for the measurement of the density profile with an accuracy of ± 1%, the detection of 10 4 light signal pairs per gamma emitter 2 is required. This results in a density profile measurement per 10 s, a minimum pulse rate of 10 3 s⁻ 1 multiplied by the number of gamma emitters 2 , which are detected by a scintillator 10 . A density profile measurement per 100 s can also be sufficient, which results in a lower limit for the minimum pulse rate of 10 2 s -1 . Preferably, therefore, the overall activity is the directed to a scintillator 10 gamma emitters 2 selected such that an optical pulse rate in the range 10 2 S⁻ 1 - 10 8 S⁻ 1, in particular in the range 10 3 S⁻ 1 - 10 7 S⁻ 1, is produced.
The calibration of the gamma-ray sealing profile sensor comprises two steps. The synchronicity of the measuring electronics 16 , that is, the two measuring channels for determining the transit time delays, can also be monitored and, if necessary, corrected during operation with the aid of a calibration source 12 , which is attached near the scintillator 10 according to FIG. 2. In this way it is guaranteed that the measuring electronics 16 is drift-free and long-term stable. Pulsed light or scintillation sources with light coupling in both directions of the scintillator 10 are suitable as calibration source 12 . In particular re are weak gamma or alpha emitters, e.g. B. Americium with an equivalent gamma energy of 60 keV, can be used.
The calibration of the density measurement is carried out by reference measurements with water, oil, etc. In principle, different activities of the gamma emitter 2 , different losses of gamma photons or inhomogeneities of the scintillator 10 can be taken into account by individual calibration factors for each gamma emitter position. Preferably, the measuring electronics 16 comprises means for individual calibration of the optical pulse rate caused by each gamma emitter 2 .
Furthermore, the crosstalk between different gamma emitters 2 represents a considerable problem. Compton scattering occurs in the steel walls 4 as the main interference effect. The irradiated areas thus become secondary gamma sources with all-round emission. The deflected gamma photons can - depending on the distance from the transmitting collimator 3 to the scintillator 10 - hit arbitrary places in the scintillator 10 and falsify the position and density measurement. As countermeasures according to the invention, shielding conditions, receiving collimators 19 , energy discrimination of the optical pulses and arrangements with several scintillation detectors 13 are proposed.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment of a receiving collimator 19 with an opening. The collimators 3 , 19 typically consist of lead, which absorbs gamma radiation very efficiently. The openings of the receiving collimators 19 lie opposite the transmitting collimators 3 . The collators 3 and 19 are preferably parallel to one another, in particular horizontally oriented and aligned at each height in the direction of a common connecting line. The shape of the collimators can be arbitrary, e.g. B. round, angular, from angled or the like. For the receiving collimators 19 let b be the clear width and t the depth. The crosstalk is already significantly reduced at a disappearing depth t because the scintillator 10 receives gamma photos only at the openings. As the collimator depth t increases, the shielding against scattered gamma photons can be further improved. Neglecting multiple scattering, the shielding is ideal if a collimator depth t <bL / a is chosen, where a denotes the distance between two neighboring gamma sources 2 and L aligned on the same scintillator 10 and L the path length between transmitting collimator 3 and scintillator 10 . A further measure to reduce crosstalk consists in the medium 6 between two gamma emitters 2 horizontal shields 20 , z. B. Bleiplat th to assemble.

The detection of the gamma photons scattered at a large deflection angle ϑ can also be prevented by energy discrimination of the scintillation flashes 11 . The intensity or energy distribution of the scintillation events results from the stimulating gamma energy and the probabilities for the photo effect, Compton effect and possibly pair formation in the scintillator 10 . The brightest flashes are caused by the photo effect of the primary, undisturbed gamma photons and form the so-called photopeak. Weaker flashes result from secondary gamma photons, in particular from the steel walls 4 , but also from primary gamma photons, which suffer Compton scattering in the scintillator and then escape. By cutting off the scintillation spectrum below the photopeak, the detection of Compton-scattered gamma photons can be restricted at the expense of the counting rate. Because of the optical attenuation, the discrimination threshold must be chosen as an essentially exponentially decaying function of the optical path. The spatial resolution can be increased with increasing discrimination threshold and gamma energy. In order to prevent the scattering cones of different gamma emitters 2 from overlapping, the relationship must be approximate

An example is a threshold 5% below the photopeak and E γ = 660 keV. From equation (1) with R (ϑ) <95% one obtains | ϑ | <16 ° and from equation (2) with a path length L ≈ 30 cm a spatial resolution a ≈ 17 cm.
Durch Kombination der Energiediskrimination mit Empfangskollimatoren 19

The measuring accuracy can be further improved by combining the energy discrimination with reception collimators 19 even of a small depth t. For small spreading angles

(3) nur näherungsweise erfüllt sein müssen.the deflected gamma photons are blocked by the shields between the openings of the receiving collimators 19 . In addition, a discrimination threshold should be set so that the residual energies of the gamma photons scattered in an adjacent receiving collimator 19 lie below the threshold. An example is a threshold 10% below the photo peak and E γ = 660 keV. From equation (1) with R (ϑ) <90% one obtains | ϑ | <24 ° and from equation (3) with b = 2 cm and L ≈ 30 cm a spatial resolution a ≈ 14 cm, in (3) the width of the transmission collimators 3 relative to their distance a was neglected. In this configuration, the width b of the receiving collimators 19 and the discrimination threshold can thus be coordinated with one another in such a way that their shielding action against scattered gamma photons is complementary. The receiving collimators 19 can thus be made wide and short to save space. In this way, a high spatial resolution with very low crosstalk can be achieved with a higher count rate. In practice, crosstalk is permitted within the measurement accuracy, so that the conditions (2) and (3) only have to be approximately fulfilled.
Fig. 6 discloses a further embodiment with a compared to Fig. 2 ver double spatial resolution or with reduced crosstalk. Density profile sensor 1 here consists of a gamma emitter tube 21 with transmission collimators 3 oriented alternately in opposite directions and two scintillator tubes or probes 22 , each with an elongated scintillator 10 . Each of the scintillators 10 is, as before, connected to photodetectors 14 , 15 and a measuring electronics 16 according to one of the preceding exemplary embodiments and can be equipped with the measures specified above for calibrating, reducing crosstalk or for improving the spatial resolution. In particular, a plurality of probes 22 can also be used around a gamma emitter tube 21 with gamma emitters 2 aligned alternately with them. For example, three probes 22 can be arranged at 120 °.
Fig. 7 shows a possible installation of a gamma-ray density profile sensor 1 into a separation tank 17th Typical dimensions of a cylindrical tank 17 , for example, are 2-3 m in diameter and 10 m in length. The sensor 1 comprises at least one gamma emitter tube 21 and at least one probe 22 according to one of the above exemplary embodiments. In Fig. 7 only one of the tubes 21 , 22 is shown visible. The tubes 21, 22 are connected to the separator tank 17 that gamma photons on the path from the source 2 to the Szintil lator 10 6 pass through the medium in the tank 17 at least partially. The raw re 21 , 22 should extend in the normal operating state so that in particular the position of the boundary layer 6 c between oil and water is detectable de. Preferably, the tubes 21 , 22 are installed in pipe sockets 24 , which protrude into the interior of the separator tank 17 or completely traverse the interior (not shown); or the tubes 21 , 22 may be attached to the wall of the separator tank 17 or immersed directly in the medium 6 in the separator tank 17 , which is also not shown in FIG. 7. An advantage of the pipe socket 24 is that the probe 22 or the gamma emitter tube 21 can also be exchanged during operation of the separator tank 17 .
Overall, the invention discloses a level measurement system with a robust and measurement-sensitive gamma-ray density profile sensor 1 . By detecting multiple gamma rays from discrete sources 2 with a scintillator 10 , the complexity and thus the susceptibility to failure of the sensor 1 is decisively simplified and a compact structure is realized. A very high spatial resolution can be achieved by additional measures for shielding and energy discrimination.
