Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing spatial Microstructures in transparent materials using laser radiation, at due to the nonlinear optical effect of self-focusing in the Volume of these materials such structures are generated.
Process for the spatial structuring of transparent materials have just been developed in recent years to keep getting better Possibilities for an effective three-dimensional optical data storage to create d. H. targeted a local change in the optical properties (Refractive index, transmission) of the material. Under Structuring is the modification of the material during laser irradiation understood, which leads to a change in the optical properties.
In a quasi-3D process, which is in "Spectrum of Science", January 1996, 50-56, the surface is transparent Material processed like in the production of a CD (compact disk), then applied a new transparent layer, processed, etc. The reading out of the information so inscribed in multiple layers in the different levels are made using a height-adjustable laser head.
In "APPLIED OPTICS", Vol. 34, No. 20, 10. In "APPLIED OPTICS", vol. 34, no. 20, July 10, 1995, 4105-4110 is a 3D Structuring of certain doped materials using the described photorefractive effect. Here the focus is on what is to be processed Material directed a laser beam. This excitation causes in the material that electrons from the outer shell of the irradiated doping atoms in migrate unexposed areas. The resulting electric field leads to a local refractive index change. Through sharp focus the laser beam into the material can be a three-dimensional structuring can be achieved, the size of the Modification essentially depends only on the focus size. Here is but the effort for the optics considerably to produce structures <1 µm can. In addition, the focusing optics must be adjustable in height in order to To be able to adjust the depth of the modification in the material.
Another method has the same disadvantages, in which in one a polymer matrix embedded photochromic material Two-photon absorption after simultaneous irradiation with two Laser beams of the same or different wavelengths and their Interaction with the material takes place. With correspondingly more intense Laser radiation leads to the simultaneous absorption of two photons into one Color change of the material at the irradiated area. Such a process is described in SPIE, Vol. 2604, 23-32.
By means of holographic processes, which are also based on a change in the refractive index, the information of an image or two-dimensional bit pattern imprinted in the signal beam is written into a phase grating in a suitable material (e.g. doped LiNbO 3 ) with the aid of a reference beam (see for example "Laser Focus World ", November 1996, 81-93 and" International Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics ", Vol. 3, No. 3 (1994), 317-337). The pattern is not saved as an image, but as a phase image due to the locally changed refractive index. This storage takes place in the entire irradiated crystal. The information is read out in the same way as the writing: A laser beam interacts in the material under exactly the same conditions as when the information was written (the same angle between the beams, same wavelength and intensity). This in turn converts the phase information stored in the medium into a two-dimensional image. B. can be read with a CCD camera. These holographic methods require considerable equipment for writing, but also for reading out the stored information, since the two laser beams have to be brought together with an angular accuracy of <0.0001 ° on the one hand and the angular range in a wide range on the other to achieve a high information density Limits with the angular accuracy given above must be able to be varied quickly.
The prior art on which the invention is based is one Lecture announcement in the "Negotiations of the German Physical Society - Spring Conference Mainz 1997 ", 3/97, 220. Here is entitled "Influence of self-focusing effects in laser Microstructuring "the laser-assisted processing of transparent materials u. a. for the production of microstructures inside the material by the non-linear effect of self-focusing mentioned, but without concrete information and conditions for the successful implementation of the To call microstructuring.
The object of the invention is to provide a method for producing spatial Microstructures in transparent materials using laser radiation specify that with reasonable equipment, especially for the Optics, such a microstructuring for different materials without their additional treatment enables.
The object is achieved in such a method in that according to the invention with a depending on the material to be structured size of the focus to be set on the material surface Laser beam the intensity of the laser pulse below the threshold for the Surface modification and above the critical intensity at which the Self-focusing in the volume begins, and the depth of the to generating structure over the pulse length and / or the pulse energy is set.
The invention enables spatial structuring inside different transparent materials, without this an additional Must undergo treatment and their surface in their Quality is compromised.
Surprisingly, it has been found that the desired effect only occurs with laser pulses of a few picoseconds. Will the length of the Laser pulses selected smaller, there is no or only an insufficient one Self-focusing on.
In embodiments of the method according to the invention, depending on the material to be structured and the depth of the structure to be produced, the length of the laser pulse is between 0.5 ps and 10 ps and its energy per area is between 0.1 J / cm 2 and 8 J / cm 2 set and 1 (one) to 1000 shots aimed at the material.
The effect of self-focusing was in previous laser technology Applications undesirable because of the effects to be achieved there otherwise affected. The occurrence occurs in the solution according to the invention this effect, however, specifically set. It has been shown that for material whose internal volume is modified locally to a limited extent - i.e. in Structured sense of the invention - should be, if not destroyed Surface the size of the laser beam on this surface like this is to be set so that the depth of the structure to be generated over the Pulse length and / or the pulse energy can be regulated. So that's a Relationship of various parameters in the method according to the invention necessary, which is not given by a functional dependency and depending on the material to be structured for the desired appearance of the self-focusing effect must be set up.
In one embodiment of the invention, the focus area of the laser beam on the quartz surface is set between 250 μm 2 and 900 μm 2 in the case of quartz to be structured.
The method according to the invention enables a transparent material with a laser pulse that the above mentioned Has parameters and its intensity below the Modification threshold for the surface of the material but above that so - called critical intensity for the beginning of self - focusing in the Material lies that due to the self-focusing effect Energy of the laser pulse is focused on such a small area that the modification threshold of the material is exceeded. By variation the pulse length, the energy, the wavelength and the number of Laser pulses can change the depth and extent of the modification Material defined can be set.
The defined depth of modification of the material inside is - as already mentioned - by changing the length of the laser pulse and / or adjusted by varying the pulse energy without doing so To have to adjust the height of the optics.
The method according to the invention can be used to write data be used. A material modified in this way can be used as a data or Image storage can be used. To get as much information as possible, e.g. B. Bit Pattern, by means of the method according to the invention in such To be able to write data carriers, the distance between the individually generated local modifications to each other so chosen that they also with conventional means are readable.
The method enables the depth of the material to be modified an accuracy of better than 20 µm. This is data / image storage producible in which with security layers of 20 µm to 1 mm thickness of the Materials at least 25 storage locations (this corresponds to 25 CDs) can be realized are that can be read out separately.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is explained in more detail below with reference to a drawing. The FIG. 1 shows the principle of patterning in the material by self-focusing.
The radiation from a short-pulse laser, the pulse length of which can be varied, is focused on the quartz sample to be structured by an attenuator and a shutter with a lens. The size of the focus is set for a quartz sample at 350 µm 2 . The modification inside the quartz sample is observed with an observation system, and the adjustment of the focus on the sample surface is ensured with another observation system. By setting the parameters focus size, intensity and duration of the laser pulse, additional focusing - the desired self-focusing - is brought about in the material, so that the energy per surface increases at a certain depth of the quartz sample so that the material is modified there.
Fig. 1 verdeutlicht dieses Prinzip. Fig. 1 illustrates this principle. It can be seen that the focused laser beam LS is directed onto the surface OF of the quartz sample P to be structured and a defined size of the laser beam focus is set on the surface OF. Starting from the 350 µm 2 focus on the surface OF of the quartz sample P, the parameters for the structuring are now changed. Thus, the method according to the invention was carried out for the modification in which the number of rounds is increased step by step from 10 to 500 at constant pulse energy of 15 μJ, 20 μJ and 25 μJ. The pulse duration is 2.4 ps. With these parameters, the self-focusing effect is specifically set in the quartz and causes the modification of the modification threshold at this point inside the material due to the additional focusing of the energy of the laser beam (schematically shown the beam path with self-focusing effect SF and for comparison the beam path without self-focusing SV). This is how the material is structured at this point MS.
By means of microscope images, the structural changes can be traced in the Material can be made visible from the side surface. These show that changing the number of shots to a different length of Modifications. In addition to the dependence of the structure length on the Shot number is also the dependence of the depth of the modification on the Pulse energy recognizable on the recordings.
For any transparent material that is suitable as an optical memory, can this way the parameters for localized Modification structures are found. The generated Modification structures enable e.g. B. in tracks in parallel planes high storage density of data.
