Abstract
Description
Polymer materials are characterized by a low specific weight and in generally good workability. You can because of their variety of structures and the associated special properties in many areas of application, sometimes also as Replacement for other materials, used successfully. A great potential for innovation tial currently exists, for example, in the field of recycling plastic waste.
Some important industrial bulk plastics such as those belonging to the group of polyolefins However, belonging compounds have only insufficient surface activity (low specific surface energy, lack of polarity of the surface) and a we A little pronounced abrasive resistance resulting in a poor loading wettability and premature mechanical wear [1-5].
For optimal adhesion of applied layers (adhesives, varnishes, functional Layers) must therefore ver the unfavorable adhesive properties of many plastics be improved. Adequate adhesive strength and high interfacial adhesion can guarantee electrostatic ion bonds or bonds with a covalent character. A prerequisite for the formation of these types of bonds is the presence of polar and functional groups on the surface of the polymer [3]. For example, it works without a corresponding pretreatment not on the technically interesting polyolefins (Low-density polyethylene LDPE, high-density polyethylene HDPE, polypropylene PP, etc.), apply an adhesive layer of lacquer.
An increase in the free surface energy and thus an improvement in the ad The adhesive properties of the polymers is achieved through the use of various technical Pretreatment procedure achieved:
- - chemische Verfahren (z. B. Eintauchen in Chromschwefelsäurebäder),- chemical processes (e.g. immersion in chrome-sulfuric acid baths),
- - physikalische Verfahren (z. B. Beflammung mit stark oxidierenden Flammen) und- physical processes (e.g. flame treatment with strongly oxidizing flames) and
- - elektrische Verfahren (z. B. elektrische Niederdruck- und Corona-Entladung).- electrical processes (e.g. electrical low pressure and corona discharge).
The processes mentioned here have a strong oxidizing effect on the polymer surface and he increase the polar portion of the free surface energy while reducing it at the same time of the non-polar part.
Dieser Modifizierungseffekt läßt sich mit Methoden der Benetzungstheorie nachweisen [3, 7].The great advantage of this known low-pressure plasma process now lies is based on the fact that using the smallest amounts of required reaction gases Wettability, the adhesive strength to foreign substances such. B. paints and varnishes and the affinity for molecules in non-polar plastics such. B. PE, PP, polyethylene terephthalate PET, ethylene propylene diene elastomer EPDM can be significantly improved can [6]. This modification effect can be achieved with methods of wetting theory demonstrate [3, 7].
The improvement of the adhesive properties of a polymer surface is based on Rule on combining several effects:
- - Reinigung der Werkstoffoberfläche von fertigungsbedingt vorhandenen Formtrenn mitteln wie Silikonöl, Wachs, Fette etc.,- Cleaning of the material surface from mold separations due to production agents such as silicone oil, wax, greases etc.,
- - physikalisches Aufrauhen der Werkstoffoberfläche durch reaktiven Teilchenbeschuß,- physical roughening of the material surface by reactive particle bombardment,
- - Vernetzen und Verdichten von Kunststoffoberflächen,- cross-linking and compacting plastic surfaces,
- - Erhöhung der Benetzbarkeit unpolarer und schwach polarer Polymeroberflächen durch Anlagerung funktioneller und polarer Gruppen (Carboxyl-, Carbonyl-, Hydroxylgruppen) und- Increasing the wettability of non-polar and weakly polar polymer surfaces by adding functional and polar groups (carboxyl, carbonyl, Hydroxyl groups) and
- - Erzeugung neuer Werkstoffeigenschaften unabhängig vom Basismaterial durch auf tragen von Primärschichten auf zuvor undefinierte Oberflächen (Recyclingmaterial).- Generation of new material properties regardless of the base material by Wear primary layers on previously undefined surfaces (recycling material).
The innovative processes of plasma modification of plastics are already in today in many cases the established methods of wet chemical surface technology are economical equivalent and technically partially superior, since the latter is expensive Environmental protection expenses must be taken into account [4, 8]. Disposal gif tiger immersion and pickling baths used in the widespread etching processes in wet chemistry arise, is completely eliminated in the plasma processes, since only small amounts are used here gaseous and mostly harmless products such as oxygen, air, argon, helium, stick fabric, tetrafluoromethane u. a. is worked.
The exhaust air consists mainly of unused process gas, to a small extent partly from volatile degradation products due to the reaction of the reactive plasma particles with the surface of the material and from hydrocarbons (release agents) if they are not full are constantly oxidized. Depending on the type of gas used, the following Ab usually arise products [9]:
- - O₂-Plasmen: O₂, CO₂, CO, H₂O, O₃- O₂ plasmas: O₂, CO₂, CO, H₂O, O₃
- - N₂-Plasmen: N₂, NH₃, N₂H₄, evtl. HCN- N₂ plasmas: N₂, NH₃, N₂H₄, possibly HCN
- - CF₄-Plasmen: HF, F₂- CF₄ plasmas: HF, F₂
The exhaust air is added in a conventional manner via ozone traps, gas scrubbers, cooling cases condensable reaction products and absorption filters, for example for acidic gases like hydrogen fluoride cleaned and neutralized. During operation under vacuum no harmful gases can escape from the vacuum chamber. Dangerous reak tion products are made, if at all, only in small quantities and, due to the high proportion of unused reaction gas in the exhaust gas, only in highly diluted quantities. A driving of the process gas in the cycle is both ecologically desirable and economical of interest.
A low pressure plasma is a "cold" plasma, that is, the equilibrium temperature lies in the range between approx. 30 ° C and 80 ° C. At these low process temperatures Therefore, heat-sensitive materials can also be plasma-treated without any problems.
Low pressure plasmas are excited by electrical fields. These are by means of lying DC voltage or high-frequency AC voltage (in kHz, MHz and GHz range). The interaction of the reactive species of a plasma (energy rich electrons and ions, UV photons, free radicals and metastable neutral particles) with the material causes an intensive change in the morphological and chemical Properties of the surface ("surface effect") and the areas close to the surface to a depth of about 100 µm ("depth effect", "volume effect"). The reactions on the The surface of the material is primarily affected by the gas discharge initiates radicals which are chemically very active and are dependent on the type of gas used. On the other hand, the high-energy plasma vacuum UV radiation is responsible for the deep effect literally. This is independent of the type of etching gas and causes the effect of the plasma time-dependent change in crystallinity, cross-linking, dehydration (training of conjugated double bonds within the polymer chain) and radical formation in the Material.
It is either to the known plasma polymerization processes (gas atmosphere contains polymerizable organic precursors) or surface modification and activation processes using reactive and aggressive gas phases. The materials used are e.g. textile webs, plate-shaped workpieces, various piles of fibers, Filaments or yarns. In low pressure plasma treatment, the reactions do not run ter vacuum. When using flat and tape material as a treatment item is a Continuous loading of the plasma chamber and removal without major difficulty This is possible because these processes usually make do with simple lock systems [4, 10].
In einer Vielzahl von Patent- und Offenlegungsschriften (siehe US 4626473, US 4810524, DE 40 05 328 A1, US 4867573, US 5234723, u. a.) werden unterschiedliche Mög lichkeiten der Prozeßführung bei der Behandlung von Pulvern (allgemein: "Schüttgut, be stehend aus diskreten Teilchen") dargestellt:In a variety of patent and laid-open publications (see US 4626473, US 4810524, DE 40 05 328 A1, US 4867573, US 5234723, u. a.) different possibilities process control in the treatment of powders (in general: "bulk goods, be standing from discrete particles "):
In the patents US 4626473, US 4810524 and the published patent application DE 40 05 328 A1 For example, systems are described in which the powder rotates freely in one the mixing drum falls through the low pressure plasma. Is favorable with this type of procedure the good contact between powder and plasma and a residence that is identical for all particles time. The throughputs achieved with these are predominantly discontinuous However, rotating drum systems based on principles are often not sufficient. Au In addition, the loading and unloading of the reaction chamber is time-consuming since the respective plant flooded to ambient pressure after the process and the rotary drum (manually) emptied must become.
In US 4867573 the movement of the solid particles by vibrations of the plasma chamber realized. The same patent specification also describes the possibility of powder intermingling with the help of a circumferential on the inside of the conical plasma chamber Screw conveyor described. The solid-gas contact is in the latter two Process compared to the rotating mixing drum reactors, less intensive and therefore inevitably leads to a broader response time spectrum.
The continuous plasma treatment of powdered polymers, however, is up to only partially implemented today:
In US 5234723 the metered continuous supply of the powder takes place by means of a Slug. The powder particles pass the plasma chamber in free fall. With the principle gravity is the disadvantage of a very short dwell time (approx. 1 s to 3 s) of the particles in the plasma. The reaction time is not freely selectable, son determined by the type of plant and the material parameters. Longer required treatment times are possible by going through the system several times, lengthen and complicate the process as a whole.
In US 4626473 is proposed as a possible process variant, the discontinuous retrofitting rotary drum with powder inlet and powder outlet openings and to strive for a continuous flow of solid particles through the plasma space. It However, it will be difficult to achieve a narrow range of residence times. About that in addition, due to the then "ordered flow" of the particles, the contact with the plas magas less intense.
It remains to be stated overall that the demand for a defined dwell time the powder particles, homogeneous mixing of the particles with the plasma gas and continuous In the above-mentioned systems, the powder is often only introduced and discharged with a com duplicated mechanical structure can be met. The realization of long powder hand Duration in continuous mode appears due to the unfavorable Ver time behavior of the individual powder particles in the plasma chamber is problematic. A discontinuous operating mode, on the other hand, enables process control with reproducible Results, however, associated with the disadvantages of the personnel-intensive batch change and long process cycle times with low powder throughputs.
There is a great need in the industry today for low pressure plasma reactors that in terms of speed, level of automation and operating costs with the konven tional procedures as well as the ecologically questionable wet chemical processes can compete. The need for economically operating continuous plasma reactors for the treatment of powdery materials that comply with the required pro To be able to guarantee product quality should therefore be valued accordingly.
The object of the present invention is therefore to take advantage of the conti Nuclear or discontinuous procedures in the form of a "quasi to link continuous "process control with each other. Essential characteristic of this The operating mode is intended to be an improved constructive solution for powder entry and exit be.
This object is achieved by those described in the claims Method and devices solved.
The present invention relates to a method for portionwise ("quasi continuous ") surface treatment (coating, etching, cleaning, activating and Polymerization) of polymeric solid particles in a for the particular desired Effectively chosen gas atmosphere of a low pressure plasma discharge.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a generally known plasmadbe preferably at 13.56 Mhz (HF excitation (or 2.45 Ghz (microwave stim gung) provided. Because the degree of ionization of a plasma is quadratic with the excitation frequency increases, microwave plasmas have a higher degree of ionization, a higher Electron temperature and thus inevitably higher electron energies and higher radi calcium concentrations as lower-frequency plasmas [3]. This results in shorter processes last in the surface treatment of polymers. The advantage of high frequency On the other hand, the excitement lies in easier handling and more uniform ionization the process gases in the plasma chamber.
The constructive based on the inventive methods and devices Design of the plasma system offers compared to the conventional method mentioned have the following advantages:
Eine manuelle Eingabe des zu behandelnden Pulvers bzw. manuelle Entnahme des behandelten Pulvers entfällt somit.- The powder to be treated arrives on the basis of those proposed according to the invention Construction (including several slot openings on the circumference of the rotating drum) in the plas macammer and, after treatment, leaves this chamber in the direction of rotation reversal of the rotating drum rotation through these slots. A manual entry of the powder to be treated or manual removal of the treated powder is therefore dispensed with.
The automatic discharge of the drum is supported by several in suitable conveyor devices ("blades") arranged on the drum. These shovels also guarantee a homogeneous during the low pressure plasma process Swirling the powder in the chamber. The good contact feasible Substance gas results in a high degree of modification with short process times.
The specific throughput is higher than with comparable conventional Trom mel plasma systems, since the low pressure state in the chamber also during the Char gene change can be maintained.
Es können die für den jeweiligen Werkstoff optimalen Behandlungsparameter gewählt werden.- The dwell time of the individual solid particles in the process space is defined and for everyone Particles the same size. The design of the rotary drum proposed according to the invention is therefore suitable for material-independent plasma treatments. It can be used for the Optimal treatment parameters can be selected for each material.
The substrate is exposed to a maximum temperature of approximately 80 ° C. The The process is therefore also suitable for temperature-sensitive materials.
Er ist somit industriell personalextensiv durchführ bar.- The process parameters / sequences are specified by a process computer. The pro zeß runs completely automatically. It is therefore industrially personnel-intensive bar.
- - In der Anlage können Recyclate problemlos plasmabehandelt werden.- Recyclates can be plasma-treated in the plant without any problems.
The inventive design of the rotating drum and the path of the material to be treated is exemplified in Fig. 1 (front view of the rotating drum reactor) and Fig. 2 (perspective sectional view of the rotating drum).
Fig. 1). The untreated powder is accordingly drawn off from a storage silo 1 under vacuum, charged and (ideally in the form of a “Dirac joint” with the aid of a suitable device 11 , for example a flap lock fitted in the antechamber) into an evacuated antechamber 2 brought in. The rotating drum 3 rotates in the process direction of rotation (here: clockwise, see FIG. 1). The powder passes through a plurality of circumferentially arranged slot openings 4 into the interior of the rotary drum 3 and is swirled by suitable conveying devices 5 attached to the inside of the drum 3 in the process chamber 6 as a result of the drum rotation. The powder is discharged by briefly reversing the direction of rotation of the drum rotation ("counterclockwise"). The treated powder leaves the drum 3 through the side slot openings 4 , is collected in a post-chamber 7 and conveyed via a conveyor 8 into an evacuated reservoir Si 9 . The pre-chamber 2 and the post-chamber 7 are separated from the actual process chamber 6 by mikrowellenabschir grating 10 . This prevents both a pre-reaction during the feeding of the powder and a post-reaction of the powder that has already been conveyed out of the chamber. These shielding grids 10 are moved ("folded away") from the powder drop section when loading or unloading the rotating drum with the aid of a suitable device, in order to thus ensure unimpeded filling and emptying of the rotating drum.
2,45 GHz (Mikrowellenanregung). The process gases are preferably circulated. The treatment effect to be achieved on the polymer surface (cleaning, activation, modification or polymerization) is achieved by using basically known compositions of the gas phase. The process gases are excited either outside ("downstream process") or inside ("direct process") of process space 6 . An energy coupling. Outside the process space 6 is useful in some applications in order to reduce the very strong and sometimes disadvantageous effects of the very high-energy electrons and ions on the material surface to be treated. The excitation frequencies are chosen from the frequency range between 30 kHz and 10 GHz, they are preferably 13.56 MHz (RF excitation) or 2.45 GHz (microwave excitation).
The pressure required for the process to run in the range between 0.1 hPa and 2 hPa (low pressure plasma) is achieved by a vacuum unit known per se. The Exhaust gas purification is carried out by commonly used cleaning units (cyclone, fil ter), possibly supplemented by a cold trap for the separation of condensable gas components.
