Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an electrically heatable exhaust gas catalytic converter Internal combustion engine with only a portion of the exhaust gas Flow cross section extending heating zone. Such is known Catalyst arrangement from DE 40 17 360 A1.
In order after a cold start of an internal combustion engine if possible a short-term conversion of pollutants in the exhaust system of the Brenn Engine intended exhaust gas catalyst to achieve, as known have a certain minimum temperature for a successful conversion must, at least a portion of the catalytic converter can be heated. From the above-mentioned document it is known that practically only one small section as short as possible to the so-called conversion temperature must be brought, after which the rest of the exhaust gas catalyst progressively automatic due to exothermic reactions in the direction of flow heats up. Basically, a one-off ignition on one is enough "hot-spot" out to the entire exhaust catalyst relatively quickly on its Bring conversion temperature.
On the catalyst arrangement known from the above-mentioned document, in which only a part of the area can be heated and therefore only a part of the entire exhaust gas flow passes through this so-called heating zone, where on the other hand, the remaining partial exhaust gas flow without resistance at this heating zone can pass, but improvements are possible that show the present invention has set itself the task.
To solve this task, measures are taken to apply heating zone provided with a disproportionate proportion of the exhaust gas flow. Appropriate measures are taken to ensure that a size rer exhaust gas partial flow passes through the heating zone than in the in the arrangement shown above would result.
The disproportionate loading of the Heating zone with a partial exhaust gas flow through various measures. There heating the catalytic converter practically only at the beginning of the warm Running phase of the internal combustion engine takes place, d. H. so if only one relatively small exhaust gas flow is generated, it is possible to use this relatively small Target exhaust gas flow by simple measures so that an over proportional portion of the same penetrates the heating zone. Be provided can therefore upstream of the heating zone a nozzle-like adapted to this Narrowing of the flow cross-section, which has the consequence that the ent speaking exhaust gas flow essentially targeted to the heating zone is directed. In addition, it is possible to cover only a sub-area of the exhaust gas flow cross section extending heating zone with a lot surrounded by catalytically coated exhaust gas flow channels, which in turn is a flow obstacle for the otherwise at the heating zone represent flowing exhaust gas flow and thus an increased proportion assign the exhaust gas flow to the heating zone. This measure is special effective when the heating zone is essentially central in the exhaust gas flow mung cross section is arranged, with the term centricity the quantitative distribution of the exhaust gas flow over the entire flow mation cross section relates. The quantity usually falls as well as the geometric centricity together, d. H. especially with one relatively low total flue gas flow, such as during heating in the Warm-up phase occurs, is the largest subset of the exhaust gas mes in the geometric center of the catalytic converter. Only with com plexing inflow conditions in the housing of the catalytic converter the quantitative flow center is also geometrically decentralized.
The invention is explained in more detail with reference to preferred exemplary embodiments which are only shown in principle. In Fig. 1 are shown above and two similar embodiments below the symmetry line, Fig. 2 shows another embodiment.
Reference number 1 always denotes a housing of an internal combustion engine gas catalyst, within which, inter alia, a so-called further catalyst body 2 is provided, which can be constructed as usual, ie has a multiplicity of exhaust gas flow channels 3 which, as usual, have a catalytic coating are. The arrows 4 denote the internal combustion engine exhaust gas flow through the housing 1 .
A so-called heating zone 5 in the form of a conventional metal support catalyst is provided upstream of the catalyst body 2 . Electrodes 6 supply this heating zone 5 with the required electrical voltage, which is applied to this heating zone 5 for heating purposes. As can be seen, this heating zone 5 extends only over a partial area T of the entire exhaust gas flow cross section Q within the housing 1 . When execution example of Fig. 1, a so-called. Catalyst support body 7 is provided in the rest of the remaining cross-sectional flow (QT), which likewise catalytically coated exhaust gas flow channels. This support catalyst body by 7 is essentially annular, the heating zone 5 being arranged essentially centrally to this and thus also essentially centrally in the exhaust gas flow cross section Q.
Kanalwänden in wärmeleitender Verbin dung steht. With this arrangement described, an optimal heating of the heating zone 5 is established within a very short time as soon as an electrical voltage is then applied to this heating zone via the electrodes 6 . Within a very short time, this heating zone 5 , which in turn, of course, can also have catalytically coated exhaust gas flow channels 3, as usual, thus reaches its conversion temperature, from which it is able to convert harmful exhaust gas components successfully. This period is usually about 20 seconds. As soon as this heating zone in the form of a conventional metal carrier catalyst has reached its conversion temperature, a chemical reaction takes place in it, which releases a large amount of heat and thereby in particular heats up the further catalyst body 2 , but can also heat up the support catalyst body 7 . On the heating of the further catalyst body 2 is carried out by heat transfer via the exhaust gas stream 4 , while the heating of the support catalyst 7 is carried out essentially by heat conduction when the heating zone 5 or the corresponding conventional metal support catalyst 5 with the support catalyst body 7 or with the catalytically coated exhaust gas flow channels or channel walls provided therein is in a thermally conductive connection.
Compared to the previously known embodiments, in which the heating zone 5 or the corresponding metal support catalyst 5 extends over the entire flow cross-section Q, only a smaller heating zone 5 and thus only a smaller one must be used in the present design by electrical means Thermal capacity forming mass are heated. The electrical energy required to heat this lower heat capacity is thus significantly lower than the other known embodiments with the heating zone extending over the entire cross section Q. The heating effect is thus more efficient in the embodiment described here.
Compared to the prior art known from DE 40 17 360 A1 mentioned above, the arrangement according to the invention has the advantage that a large part of the exhaust gas stream 4 actually penetrates the heating zone 5 , since the supporting catalyst body surrounding the heating zone and filling the remaining cross section (QT) 7 has at least one flow resistance comparable to the heating zone 5 . Thus, while in the embodiment from DE 40 17 360 A1 the largest part of the exhaust gas stream 4 passes the heating zone 5 , in the present invention the major part of the exhaust gas stream 4 is quasi forced to pass the heating zone, in particular also because the heating zone 5 is located essentially centrally in the exhaust gas stream 4 or centrally within the housing 1 , being known for flow-dynamic reasons in this central area rich anyway, the largest part of the exhaust gas stream 4 can be found. In other words, a larger amount of exhaust gas flows through the heating zone 5 than through the supporting catalyst body 7 surrounding the heating zone 5 . In addition to the more efficient heating effect, the arrangement according to the invention thus ensures an improved conversion of the exhaust gas pollutants already in the heating phase.
The heating zone 5 or the corresponding metal support catalyst can lie with its outer circumference directly on the inner circumference of the support catalyst body 7 in order to produce the heat-conducting connection between these two catalyst bodies, but it can also be between the heating zone 5 and the support Catalyst body 7, a heat-conducting layer 8 can be provided, in particular for reasons of strength. So-called support pins 9 can also be seen between the heating zone 5 or the corresponding metal carrier catalyst and the further catalyst body 2 arranged downstream of the same. These support pins 9 are used in particular for the storage of the heating zone 5 / the metal support catalyst 5 , but can also also take on a heat-conducting function in order to bring the further catalyst body 2 to its conversion temperature more quickly after the heating zone 5 or the corresponding metal support catalyst has already done so has reached and is able to give off a large amount of heat due to the catalytic reactions taking place therein.
Still referring to FIG. 1 7 extends above the line of symmetry of the supporting catalyst body over the entire length of the housing 1, so that the heating zone 5 / of the metal supported catalyst 5 and the further Kataly sator body 2 only in the interior of this annular supporting Kataly sator body 7 must be inserted. In the embodiment below the line of symmetry, the support catalyst body 7 extends only over the same length as the heating zone 5 , so that downstream of the other catalyst body 2 ben fills the housing substantially completely dig.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 2, the same elements with the same reference numerals. Thus, there is also another catalyst body 2 inside the housing 1 , upstream of which a metal carrier catalyst 5 , which acts as a heating zone, is arranged, which only extends over a partial region T of the flow cross section Q in the interior of the housing 1 . This again provided with electrodes 6 so-called. Heating zone 5 can again be attached to the further catalyst body 2 via support pins 9 . Additionally or alternatively, a plurality of supporting ribs 10 distributed circumferentially can be provided, which position or center the heating zone 5 or the corresponding metal carrier catalyst within the housing 1 .
In order to ensure that at least when the heating zone 5 is electrically heated, a disproportionate portion of the exhaust gas stream 4 passes through the heating zone 5 , upstream of this heating zone 5 is a nozzle-like constriction V of the flow cross section adapted to this hen. This constriction V is realized here by a corresponding design of the housing 1 , which is constricted in the area of this constriction V accordingly. Upstream of the constriction V, the flow cross section can again have the size of the exhaust gas flow cross section Q provided in the region of the further catalyst body 2 . A further catalyst body 2 'can be provided in this area upstream of the constriction V within the housing 1 . Always results with this flow principle shown in Fig. 2 through the Ver constriction V an exhaust gas flow such that a disproportionate portion of the exhaust gas stream 4 passes through the heating zone 5 , which again leads to the fastest possible heating of the entire exhaust gas catalytic converter with the lowest possible electrical heating power, ie of the metal support catalyst 5 and the further catalyst body 2 results. Of course, a large number of details, in particular of a constructive nature, can be designed deviatingly from the exemplary embodiments shown, without departing from the content of the claims.
