Description
The invention relates to a method for producing fiber-reinforced articles, a plurality of which of wires is embedded in an appropriate matrix material, and, before the object is produced, each individual wire is provided with a coating, as well as a device for Applying a silicon carbide coating to board wire and then coating it with a ductile, specifically light metal. Process for the manufacture of fiber-reinforced articles under Use of coated with silicon carbide Borders have not yet been described. In US-PS 30 11912 is a method for Production of silicon carbide on a substrate, wherein (loc. Cit., Claim 2) steel as substrate, (loc. Cit., Claim 3) quartz as a substrate and (loc. Cit., Claim 4) sapphire is mentioned as the substrate. According to the information in US-PS 31 57 541, column 6, lines 31-35, there should be silicon carbide on molybdenum, tantalum, Graphite, sintered silicon carbide, silicon or silicon dioxide can be deposited. Here can (loc. cit., column 6, lines 36-40) the silicon carbide for Extraction of molybdenum or tantalum can easily be separated. The deposited silicon carbide (loc. cit., column 6, lines 40-43) adheres very firmly to graphite or sintered silicon carbide, so that porous Materials can be produced pore-free and thus gas-tight. However, plating is from Silicon carbide curb wires have not been described or suggested by these two U.S. patents. In the book "Vapor-Plating" by Powell, Campbell and Gonser, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York 1955, page 10, an apparatus is shown which can be used for covering continuous wires with Metals. This can be seen from the drawing and the associated description, since in this case a boat with a filling of a metal halide must be used. It is there, however not stated that this apparatus is used for coating board wires with a silicon carbide coating could serve.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method and a device of the already explained Kind to make available in order to economically fiber-reinforced objects and the for them required special wires to be able to produce, with the fiber-reinforced objects and the for Special wires used in manufacture have unpredictable, technically advanced properties and are of consistent quality.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von fiberverstärkten Gegenständen, wobei eine Mehrzahl von Drähten in einen zweckmäßigen Matrixwerkstoff eingebettet wird, und, bevor der Gegenstand hergestellt wird, jeder einzelne Draht mit einem Überzug versehen wird, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß zuerst ein Siliciumkarbidüberzug auf BordrahtThe invention relates to a method for the production of fiber-reinforced articles, wherein a plurality of wires is embedded in a suitable matrix material, and, before the Object is manufactured, each individual wire is provided with a coating, characterized in that, that first a silicon carbide coating on board wire
aufgebracht wird und daß der so behandelte Draht anschließend mit einem dehnbaren, spezifisch leichten Metall, aus Aluminium, Magnesium oder Titan oder deren Legierungen, überzogen wird.is applied and that the wire so treated then with a flexible, specifically light metal, made of aluminum, magnesium or titanium or their alloys, is coated.
One embodiment of the method is characterized in that the board wire consists essentially of amorphous boron is that the coating, which is applied first, consists of essentially stoichiometric silicon carbide.
Eine spezielle Ausführungsform des Verfahrens ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Wandstärke des Überzuges, welcher an zweiter Stelle aufgebracht wird, ungefähr 10% der gesamten Schnittfläche senkrecht zur Achse des Drahtes beträgtA special embodiment of the method is characterized in that the wall thickness of the Coating, which is applied in the second place, approximately 10% of the total cut area perpendicular to the Axis of the wire is
The invention finally relates to a device for applying a silicon carbide coating on board wire and to the subsequent overcoat ·, with a stretchable, specifically light metal with a deposition reactor for silicon carbide and devices for coating with light metal, which are used for Clarification in FIG. 1 and F i g. 2 and its structure and function will be described later.
When carrying out the method of the invention, border wires are used which have a thin protective layer made of silicon carbide and are also provided with a coating made of a ductile matrix material. The silicon carbide-coated board wires are coated with a light metal, e.g. B. aluminum, magnesium, titanium and their alloys. These wires are not only less susceptible to damage and breakage than the boron-silicon carbide wires on which they are based, but in some cases they have shown completely unexpected increases in strength which were not to be expected in advance based on the characteristics of the individual material components. The unexpected effect is illustrated in the increase in tensile strength, which increases from about 32,300 kgf / cm 2 for the silicon carbide clad board to about 36,000 kg / cm 2 for the aluminum clad silicon carbide board. Theoretical considerations would predict a decrease in tensile strength due to the addition of aluminum. Presumably, the ductile coating distributes local mechanical stresses and thermal effects over essential wire surfaces.
In the manufacture of fiber-reinforced objects, the matrix material coating not only gives good results Bond strength between the fiber and the matrix coating, but has better bond strength any additionally applied matrix material, including the resins. As the general Strength of the fiber-reinforced object depends on the strength of the bond between wire and Matrix material, the improvement in the physical properties of the end product is considerable.
As is known, wiry boron can be deposited by deposition can be produced from the gas phase, with the boron chemically acting as a resistor heated tungsten wire is deposited, which is made up of, for example, boron trichloride and hydrogen existing reaction gas is (cf. in J. A. Kohn, W. F. Nye, G. K. Gaule »Bor Synthesis, Structure and Properties ", Plenum Press Inc., New York 1960, pp. 7 to 14, G B-PS 10 51 883 and DT-OS 16 67 773).
Vorhergehende eigene Untersuchungen haben schnell die potentielle Nützlichkeit dieser Fibern für die Herstellung von fiberverstärkten Gegenständen mit verbesserten physikalischen Eigenschaften aufgedeckt Um die guten Festigkeitseigenschaften des drahtförmigen Werkstoffs auszunützen, ist es nötig, die Fibern so anzuordnen, daß die daraufwirkende Last auf das ganze Fiberbündel verteilt ist Eine Möglichkeit dieses Resultat zu erreichen ist das Einbetten der Fibern in einem Matrixwerkstoff, der sich plastisch verformen läßtPrevious own research quickly identified the potential utility of these fibers for the Manufacture of fiber reinforced articles with improved physical properties uncovered In order to take advantage of the good strength properties of the wire-shaped material, it is necessary for the fibers to be to arrange that the load acting on it is distributed over the whole fiber bundle One possibility of this The result is to embed the fibers in a matrix material that is plastically deformed leaves
Die Reaktionsfähigkeit des Bors hat bisher nicht nurThe responsiveness of boron has so far not only been
Von der gleichen Anmelderin ist in der DT-OS 16 96 621 mit dem gleichen Anmeldetag ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Überzügen und Drähten aus stöchiometrischem Siliciumkarbid angegeben worden.ίο limits the choice of possible matrix materials, but also the temperatures of manufacture and use of the objects in which it is used was additionally limited. The same applicant is in DT-OS 16 96 621 with the same Filing date a process for the production of coatings and wires from stoichiometric silicon carbide has been specified.
Silicon carbide-coated curb wires are preferred with various matrix materials, including Compatible with aluminum, magnesium, titanium and their alloys. One of the main ones Difficulties in producing high strengths and fiber-reinforced objects with high modulus, brought about the popular embedding of fibers in the matrix material in order to produce the desired end product achieve with yourself. In the most common wire sizes, the wire is broken by twisting it a relatively common case, especially with the small bending radii that occur when a fine wire is over another is placed with a different direction. In fact, even if the board wires are connected to the The small bending radii do not break or tensions in the silicon carbide coating cause and by destroying the cohesion of the boron substrate by one for the Decay susceptible to substrate-matrix action.

Obwohl die jeweiligen Verschlüsse 14 und 16From Fig. 1 it can be seen that the silicon carbide coating is applied to an electrically heated board wire 2 which is drawn down through a reactor 4 which consists of a tubular vessel 6 which has two gas inlets 8 and 10 at the upper end of the reactor 4 and is provided with only one outlet 12 at the lower end thereof. The hydrogen required for cooling is fed into the reactor through inlet 8, and the reaction gas mixture, consisting of methyldichlorosilane (CH 3 SiHCl 2 ), hydrogen and methane, is fed into inlet 10. The container can be made of hard glass (80.5% SiO 2 , 11.8% B2O3, 2.3% Al 2 O 3 , 4.4O / o Na 2 O, 0.26% K 2 0.0.21% CaO, 0.22% As 2 O 3 ; with a low expansion coefficient of 3.2 · 10 ~ 6 cm / ° C. It can withstand strong temperature differences), but other materials such as borosilicate glass (with approx. 96% SiO 2 , resistant to chemical attack, high melting point, very low thermal expansion) and quartz can be used satisfactorily. The gas inlets 8 and 10 and the outlet 12 penetrate the outer wall and are electrically connected to the metal end closures of the container 14 and 16, which in turn conveniently serve to bring the current to the wire, which is heated as a resistor.
Although the respective shutters 14 and 16
Both are like that shaped so that a groove 20 and 22 may contain a suitable conductive seal 24, e.g. B. mercury, which fulfills a double purpose, namely on the one hand when entering the closure element gas-tight to complete all around the wire, and on the other hand electrical contact between the moving Wire 2 and the corresponding closure elements 14 and 16 to produce, which in turn via the Pipes 8 and 12 and lines 26 and 28 are connected to a suitable direct current source 30. A slide resistor 32 is part of the external circuit to reduce the current that is delivered to the wire, to rain and so adjust its temperature. The Upper closure element 14 is provided with an annular recess 34 which is connected to the mercury groove 20 communicates via the bore 36 in order to seal the closure element all around. Between the Closure element 16 and the container 6 seals that located in an annular channel 38 Mercury off.
The closure elements 14 and 16 are also provided with central bores 40 and 42 which are large are enough to remove the mercury because of the surface tension in the corresponding grooves hold back.
Die Reaktionsgase treten in einem erweiterten Gefäßteil 50 in die Reaktionskammer ein, ändern darin ihre Strömungsrichtung und gelangen durch die öffnung 52 in das rohrförmige Element 6.Hydrogen enters the reaction chamber right next to the wire insertion opening through inlet 8 and is used primarily to cool the closure element 14. The reaction gases enter an enlarged vessel part 50 into the reaction chamber, change its direction of flow therein and pass through the opening 52 into the tubular element 6.
Subsequent to the formation of the silicon carbide layer the wires are coated with a matrix material of the desired composition Mistake. For aluminum, the coating is made by putting the wire in aggregates like them shown in Figure 2. An alumina crucible 60 is conveniently placed in a furnace, which is lined with refractory bricks 62 and provided with heating coils 64. The crucible has one opening 66 which is narrow enough to accommodate the molten aluminum 68 inside the crucible hold, but on the other hand is large enough to allow the wire 2 to pass freely. The crucible is reached through the 70 opening in the oven. A chimney 72 is attached above the crucible and an argon stream is used as a protective gas passed through chimney inlet 74 to remove undesirable atmospheric influences in the molten aluminum bath and in the made coating on the tune; to reduce.
In various experiments the wire was pulled both up and down and it was found that the more even coating could then be made by pulling the wire upwards.
The coatings were applied in a number of different ways Matrix materials were used as will be seen in the following examples.
