Zur Herstellung von Blitzlichtpräparaten verwendete man bisher Gemische von Magnesium- oder Aluminiumpulver mit Chloraten, Perchloraten, Nitraten (Kalium-, Natrium-, Ammonium-, Strontiumnitrat), Superoxyden (Mangan-, Calcium-, Magnesiumsuperoxyd), Phosphor, Schießpulver, Permanganaten oder Chromaten. Keine dieser Mischungen erfüllt alle an ein Blitzlichtpräparat gestellten Anf orderungen, nämlich hohe Lichtstärke, kurze Verbrennungsdauer, Unempfindlichkeit gegen Schlag und Stoß, geringe Rauchentwicklung; vielmehr vereinigen die bekannten Blitzlichtmischungen des Handels stets nur einen Teil dieser Eigenschaften in sich, namentlich ist aber bei fast allen die Rauchentwicklung noch eine recht beträchtliche.Up to now, mixtures of magnesium- or aluminum powder with chlorates, perchlorates, nitrates (potassium, sodium, ammonium, strontium nitrate), super oxides (Manganese, calcium, magnesium superoxide), phosphorus, gunpowder, permanganates or Chromates.
