Description
The present invention relates to a nuclear reactor fuel rod consisting of a filling of tablets made of oxygen-containing nuclear fuel material, in particular from UCh, within a cladding tube Zircon or a zircon alloy. At higher operating temperatures, such fuel rods exist the risk of oxygen embrittlement of the cladding tube material. The oxygen diffuses out in the process the fuel, e.g. B. UO2, in the zircon. With changing mechanical loads on the cladding tube material, z. B. with load changes or scram, the embrittlement of the cladding tube material can under certain circumstances lead to a cladding tube defect. Such defects certainly do not occur if the diffusion succeeds to prevent oxygen from the nuclear fuel in the zirconium or the zirconium alloy.
This risk of the cladding tube embrittlement is eliminated by the fact that to create a diffusion barrier against the penetration of oxygen into the cladding tube material, according to the invention, the tablets at least at their The outer surface is provided with a coating of pyrographite with a layer thickness of at least 1 μ are.
One possibility for applying the pyrographite coating to the tablets is, for example, to pass methane gas in a manner known per se over the tablets, which are heated to about 800 ° C. or more, and thus to effect pyrolytic deposition of graphite on the tablets.
The use of deposited pyrographite coatings is well known in the art Production of fuel elements for nuclear reactors is known per se (cf. OE-PS 2 36 542). There it is but a reactor fuel element with a graphitic carbon shell around the fuel core, at least two independently acting to hold back fission products, has sealing zones connected in series which are connected to one another in a thermally conductive manner. the innermost sealing zone can be applied to the fuel core and through a dense pyrographite layer be formed, which surrounds a fuel pill consisting of uranium carbide and graphite or with the Uranium carbide single grains or threads are surrounded. When it envelops the individual fuel particles, the layer thickness should be at least 10 μ. The outer sealing zones can also be covered with pyrographite be formed on the inside and / or outside of the graphite envelopes surrounding the fuel are upset. A layer thickness is required for a coating provided on the inside of the casing of at least 1 mm is required. There, however, the pyrographite coatings serve to seal the Graphite shells to prevent the escape of gaseous fission products. As in the known fuel element the nuclear fuel enclosed by the graphite shell consists of uranium carbide, where the Possibility of occurrence of oxygen does not arise.
This technique therefore differs fundamentally from the subject matter of the invention, in which the basic requirement in the use of an oxygen-containing nuclear fuel and one against oxygen too protective cladding tube made of zirconium or a zirconium alloy.
The coating in the fuel rod according to the proposed invention is made by deposition of the pyrographite Reached directly on the nuclear fuel pellets and initially acts itself as a barrier to escape of the oxygen from the tablet and forms on the inside of the cladding tube during operation of the reactor a zirconium carbide layer, which provides reliable protection for the cladding tube material against diffusion of oxygen represents. This protective layer tears when the cladding tube is stretched but always new. It is also retained when it is exposed to temperature fluctuations the tablets crumble. Their abrasion resistance forms an effective protection against injuries to them Layer caused by movements of the tablets or fragments thereof.
In Fig. 1 shows a section from a nuclear reactor fuel rod 2. Inside are the fissionable material tablets with 3, its envelope with pyrographite with 31 and the cladding tube with 4. It is not necessarily so required that the front sides of the fuel tablets are covered with pyrographite, as the Main protective layer during operation of the fuel rod on the inside of the cladding tube 4 forms. This protective layer is denoted by 41.
The F i g. 2 shows a diagram in which the microhardness of the cladding tube material - in this example alloy Zr / Cul, 6 - starting from the inside of the cladding tube facing the fuel tablets to a depth of about 200 μ after a test time of 24 hours and a test temperature of 800 0 C is recorded. Curve A shows the hardness profile when using pyrographite-protected surfaces of the UO2 tablets. It is absolutely constantly low and corresponds to the initial state of the alloy. Curve B, on the other hand, shows the hardness profile when using unprotected UO2 tablets. It can be seen from this that a substantial increase in hardness occurs in the edge zone of the inside of the cladding tube material, since the oxygen concentration is greatest in the edge zones. After the inside of the material, this and thus also the micro-hardness decreases to the same extent and finally reaches the value that corresponds to the initial state of the cladding tube material. This diagram clearly shows the protective effect of the pyrographite layer on the UO2 tablets.
Jenseits dieser Temperaturgrenze, die höchstens bei Unfäl-Application of this method is limited to fuel rods whose betriebsliche surface temperature is not much higher than 800 0C. Beyond this temperature limit, which at most in the event of an accident
As a result, a coherent zirconium carbide layer can no longer form on the surface of the cladding tube, so that the protective effect slowly ceases after the pyrographite layer on the UO2 tablets has been consumed. However, since these cladding tube materials can only be used up to a maximum of 650 ° C. for reasons of strength, this restriction should not be of any practical importance.
Finally, it should be mentioned that a deposition of pyrographite from the gas phase on the cladding tube material even because of the hydrogen released and the associated hydrogen embrittlement of the cladding tube material cannot be carried out. One that is disruptive in terms of neutron physics Effect of the pyrographite coatings is not to be expected, since graphite or carbon are used as reactor material ideally suited for thermal reactors.
