Description
The electrochemical process to which the present invention relates is known in the art as an electrolytic process for the preparation of fluorine-containing carbon compounds and is described in U.S. Patents 2,519,983, 2,717,871 and 2,732,398 and in "Fluorine Chemistry" , Vol. 1, pp. 417 and 418, edited by JH Simons, Academic Press Inc., 1950. The method can be carried out with an electrode arrangement which consists of alternately arranged and closely spaced iron plates as cathodes and nickel plates as anodes. The voltage applied to the cell is in the range of about 4 to 8 volts direct current; the cell can be operated at atmospheric pressure and at temperatures below about 0 to 20 0 C or at higher temperatures and pressures. The organic starting compound is preferably admixed with the liquid hydrogen fluoride in an amount between about 5 and about 20 percent by weight right from the start. Both the starting organic compound and the hydrogen fluoride electrolyte are replenished from time to time as they are used up. The outgoing gas mixture is passed through a cold trap, in which most of the hydrogen fluoride vapors evolved are condensed. The liquefied hydrogen fluoride is then fed back into the cell. The fluorinated process products are insoluble in the liquid hydrogen fluoride and either settle at the bottom of the cell or evaporate together with the hydrogen fluoride and other gaseous products. They can easily be obtained by freezing and condensing.
The first of the above patents relates to the basic process of electrochemical fluorination in general. The second of the above-mentioned patents relates particularly to the electrochemical one Fluorination of carboxylic acid halides and the third patent relates to sulfonic acid halides. According to the process of these patents, the fluorination takes place by adding all carbon bonds Hydrogen atoms replaced by fluorine atoms and aromatic rings or unsaturated structural units optionally be saturated by the addition of fluorine.
In the preparation of fluorinated acid halides from carboxylic acid halides, the process is relatively through low yields of the desired open-chain product as a result of cleavage and cyclization marked. Often times the desired product is a fluorinated cyclic compound, but previously it was no known method of directing the reaction in a certain direction and either the cyclic or to let the open-chain connection arise preferentially over the other. It is very much a desirable procedure to have available, in which the yield of the desired fluorinated acid halide increases and in which the split can be reduced or kept within limits.
The invention is an improvement in the process for the electrochemical fluorination of organic acid halides.
In the process according to the invention, the choice of suitable starting materials increases the yield of fluorinated acid eluents, directs the selectivity and bulge of the electrochemical reaction to the obvious or cyclic fluorinated derivative of the starting acid halide, and prevents cleavage of the chain of the starting material.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein verbessertes Verfahren zur elektrochemischen Fluorierung organischer Säurehalogenide unter Verwendung von Nickel, einer Nickellegierung, Siliciumcarbid oder Kohle als Anode und einer Metallkathode, flüssigem Fluorwasserstoff als Elektrolyten und einer Zellspannung zwischen 4 und 8 Volt Gleichstrom, dadurch gekennzeichnet, ίο daß man als Ausgangsstoffe teilweise halogensubstituierte Carbonsäurehalogenide oder Sulfonylhalogenide verwendet, dieThe invention relates to an improved process for the electrochemical fluorination of organic compounds Acid halides using nickel, a nickel alloy, silicon carbide or carbon as the anode and a metal cathode, liquid hydrogen fluoride as an electrolyte and a cell voltage between 4 and 8 volts direct current, characterized in that the starting materials used are partially halogen-substituted carboxylic acid halides or sulfonyl halides used that

The essence of the invention lies in the use of new starting compounds for the production of fluorine containing acid halides and cyclic ethers.
According to the invention, the place of halogen substitution in the chain of the starting compounds and the type of halogen substitution used, the structure of the product manufactured and the yield and to regulate or control the selectivity of the desired product.
The gaseous halogens (chlorine and fluorine) tend, when attached to a carbon atom, to stabilize this carbon atom and even neighboring atoms against reaction attack and / or cleavage. The opposite effect occurs when the substituting halogen atom is bromine or iodine because these halogens are easily removed in the course of the electrochemical fluorination. Therefore can according to the invention, the type of halogen substitution to use a reaction attack or a To provoke or prevent cleavage at the halogen substitution site or the neighboring point.
Die Stelle des Kohlenstoffatoms, bei dem der Wasserstoff durch Halogen substituiert ist, bestimmt den Punkt, an dem die Reaktion oder Spaltung angreift, oder den Punkt erhöhter Beständigkeit undThe position of the carbon atom at which the hydrogen is substituted by halogen is determined the point at which the reaction or cleavage attacks, or the point of increased persistence and
If that Acid halide has a chain length that is so great that a five- or six-membered ring can form, By choosing the right halogen at the appropriate position, a ring can be formed by cyclization as a result of an intramolecular reaction either be prevented or favored. Even the unsaturated carboxylic acid halides have a tendency to form ring compounds during electrochemical fluorination. The electrochemical fluorine ration of acid halides that do not have any halogen substitution on the acid halide residue Contain chain, therefore leads to a Prodaktgemisoh from both cyclic and non-cyclic compounds. The substitution of a gaseous halogen on a carbon atom that is the fifth or is the sixth atom of a possible ring, reduces or effectively reduces ring formation, thereby reducing the Yield of non-cyclic fluorinated products and thus the selectivity of the electrochemical Response is generally increased.
The following partially halogen-substituted acid halides can be used to produce the corresponding open-chain halogen-substituted acid halides:

A standard cell was charged with 1800 g of anhydrous HF and 200 g of CH 3 CHFCOF. Organic material was then added at a rate of 19.8 g per hour. The cell was run at 40 amps, 5.9 volts for about 70 hours. The yield of C 2 F 5 COF was 59 ° / 0, based on the total amount of the effluent gas, compared to 44%. if Propionsäurefluorid is used as the starting material, if "ix-Difluorpropionsäurefluorid is used as a starting material under the same working conditions, obtaining a yield of 86% of C 2 F 6 COF.
This example shows that the substitution by fluorine on the ^ carbon atom of an acid fluoride starting compound the yield of fluorinated acid fluoride increases significantly by eliminating the decarboxylation is reduced to a minimum.
The monofluoropropionic acid fluoride was prepared by reacting the corresponding monochloropropionic acid with potassium fluoride and subsequent conversion to the acid fluoride. The difluoropropionic acid was produced by reacting the ethyl ester of pyruvic acid with SF 4 and subsequent hydrolysis to the acid. The acid was then converted to the acid fluoride by conventional methods.
A 10 amp laboratory cell was used for this experiment. The initial charge consisted of 300 grams of anhydrous HF, 21 grams of Cl (CH 2 CFj) 3 SO 2 F, and 1.5 grams of NaF. Subsequent sulfonyl fluoride additions were made at a rate of 9 grams per hour during the 60 hour trial. The average amperage was around 7.5 amps at 6 to 7 volts. Most of the chlorine remained in the products. The total yield of sulfonyl fluorides was about 50% of theory, compared with about 35% for the unsubstituted starting compound.
This starting compound was obtained by telomerization of vinylidene fluoride with sulfuryl chlorofluoride manufactured as telogen.
Ringes). A standard cell was charged with 1940 g anhydrous HF, 60 g CeHi 3 CHClCH 2 SO 2 F and 5 g NaF . The starting organic compound was fed in at a rate of 10.8 grams per hour during the 217 hour run. The amperage averaged 40 amps at 5.7 to 6.0 volts. Liquid products were obtained from the cell at a rate of 9.8 grams per hour . These products consisted of about 48.5% C 8 F 17 SO 2 F, 14.3% of C 6 F 13 CFClCF 2 SO 2 F and about 10% of C 8 F 18 . The distribution and yield of product were about the same as for the unsubstituted starting compound. This example shows the necessity of halogen substitution on the third carbon atom (fifth atom of the possible ring).
This starting compound was prepared by adding sulfonylchlorofluoride to octene-1.
