In the case of field emission cathodes that have become known, a special process is used to target the Cathode material applied in the area of the tip or cutting edge foreign atoms that z. B. made of zirconium exist. This coating of the tip of the electron source with such foreign atoms brings about with the great advantage that the work function of the electrons is considerably reduced and the Electrons exit preferably at a point on the cathode that corresponds to this coating, this Field emission cathodes or electrodes, however, have a relatively short life, and the Emission of electrons from smaller areas on the cathode, as indicated by the one described above Procedure achieved is not sufficiently consistent. Also, the lifespan of this is well known Field emission cathodes depending on the current density occurring during operation. When using such a cathode in an oscilloscope tube, this results in a relarend the activation of such a cathode. Such tubes do not need any warm-up time before the electron emission begins and the tube is thus in the operating state.
In one embodiment of the cathode according to the invention is a tungsten rod or wire provided with a tapered tip, with an intermediate layer of oxygen and a coating made of zirconium are on the tip of the tapered part. The tungsten cathode is well known So designed that the face of the body-centered cubic lattice of tungsten, which has the Miller index (100), is at the top of the cathode. It is known that when attaching a coating of zirconium on the cathode when this cathode is heated, the zirconium atoms in the Migrate level with Miller index (100) at the tip of the cathode. Since zirconium has a lower Electron work function, as tungsten, is the field emission of electrons out of the cathode essentially completely limited to the plane with the Miller index (100) at the tip of the cathode.

The cathode according to FIG. 1 has an emission region 1 which is attached to a wire 2 used for holding. This wire is used to heat the emission section during the manufacture of the coatings to be described later. The wire 2 used for the holder can be a tungsten wire which is bent in a U-shape. The electron-emitting section 1 consists of a tungsten single crystal piece in the shape of a cone with an opening angle of about 30 °, which is sufficient to prevent strong field emission from other sections of this particle 1 except the tip. The conical section 1 has a tip 3 with a radius of curvature in the range between 10 ~ 7 and 10 ~ 4 cm in order to be able to generate the high electric field required to achieve a field emission.
The tip 3 of section 1 of the whole cathode is covered with an electron-emitting layer 4, as schematically in FIG. 4 is shown. This coating consists of a material lower Work function, such as B. zirconium. Underneath is an intermediate layer 5 made of, for example, oxygen, which acts as a "binding layer". The section made up of tungsten, oxygen and zirconium the cathode has an electron work function of about 2.6 electron volts at room temperature, while the electron work function of tungsten alone is about 4.5 electron volts. The zirconium atoms have such a size that they fit into the spaces between the Wolfrainatomen 6 fit the surface of the tip 3, this surface being a crystal lattice face with the Miller index (100) is. The zirconium atoms deposited on the cathode migrate into the crystal lattice plane with Miller index (100) of the tungsten grid aligned with the cathode tip, and obviously also in the area that immediately surrounds this plane after the cathode has passed through Current flow through the wire 2 or heated in another suitable manner, thereby causing electrons 7 only from the narrow surface of the lattice plane with Miller index (100) and this surface surrounding area are emitted.
In addition to zirconium, the coating layer 4 can also have a low electron work function Pointing elements hafnium or magnesium are used because these elements are in the Classify the grid plane with the Miller index (100) of the tungsten. Nitrogen, chlorine, iodine or fluorine are considered other intermediate layer elements are suitable. Other suitable elements can thus practically also be used in accordance with the voltage series in layers 4 and 5, if these Elements only have the appropriate electrical charges and the correct atomic sizes.
You can also replace the zirconium with other electron-emitting material, such as. B. cesium, barium or thorium, soft adheres to the tungsten lattice planes with the Miller indices (100) and (211). However, these electron-emitting materials just mentioned have a small disadvantage in that they would form a large number of emission sources arranged at a distance from one another on the cathode, since these materials adhere to different planes. An electron source that consists of several individual sources is usually undesirable because a point source is required to properly focus the beam. But one can imagine building a cathode in such a way that only one of these planes is at the tip or cutting edge with a small radius of curvature, so that the electron emission is limited to such a point or such a line. You can of course also use other refractory metals with a body-centered cubic lattice and an atomic size similar to tungsten, such as. B. molybdenum, platinum, nickel; it is even possible to use semiconductor materials such as silicon or diamond instead of tungsten for the field emission cathode. In this case, other materials with a low work function would be used for the layer 4 and possibly other binding materials for the intermediate layer 5. In contrast to the training according to FIG. 1 also has a cathode according to FIG. Form 2, in which case the cathode itself has a relatively large cylindrical body 8, for example made of tungsten, with a conical taper V. The tip 3 'of this arrangement is similar to that in FIG. 4 with a coating of electron-emitting material and an intermediate layer of binding material. The cathode according to FIG. 2 can be heated directly by a high-frequency induction coil in order to cause the zirconium applied to the cathode section 1 'to move into the plane with Miller index (100) according to FIG. 4 wanders. It is of course also possible to use other suitable heating methods for indirect heating, including bombardment with electrons from a further source.
Instead of using tapered cathodes according to FIGS. 1 and 2, an elongated, sharply tapering knife edge 9 according to FIGS. 3A and 3B can also be provided. This knife-edge-like cathode can be attached to a wire 2 'after bending it into a rectangular shape by sharpening the outer edge of the central part accordingly, e.g. B. grinds. The cutting edge of the tungsten base containing the crystal plane with Miller index (100) can be similar to that in FIG. 4 can be coated with an electron-emitting material by z. B. allows a heating current to flow through the wire 2 '.
