As has been demonstrated by the coupling 13 after a second inner channel 14 tests, this shows the disadvantage of the atomization described below, however, that the purpose of the precipitation effect is introduced. The substance to be sprayed is supplied to the extent that is essentially defined by the ratio of a channel 15, which, after an outlet amount i 5, opening 16 for this coating material is deposited on test objects, leads to the flow rate in the spray gun on the front side of the gun body.

As already mentioned, the measures according to the invention increase the precipitation efficiency which is a consequence of the increased particle charging caused by the longer residence time is produced. The tests have shown, among other things, that the pattern is otherwise similar Conditions enlarged compared to a specimen that has a base diameter of less than 150 mm when no charge is transferred to the particles, as opposed to a cone with a Base diameter of at least 600 mm when charging with the working voltage. Without the inventive Vortex formation shows no significant change in the pattern size in one Voltage from zero to full voltage.
If the angularly grooved flange 40 is omitted or the grooves 41 are coplanar with the axis the spray gun, then the passage of the particles through the area of highest intensity is due the increased air flow required for a certain fineness of the atomization so quickly that the particles are only insufficiently charged. It can be assumed that the mechanism of charging in the case of the present invention is primarily an ion bombardment within the very highly intense field area and that time is a very important variable in this method represents. The effective time during which the particles are subject to ion bombardment, is of course inversely proportional to the particle velocity and directly proportional to that Extension of the effective ionization zone. The high-intensity field area is enlarged or becomes If the particle size is reduced, then the charge on the particles increases. By issuing a Whirling motion for the atomizing air flow can be used to reduce the air flow to achieve the desired level of atomization. The resulting reduced speed increases the residence time of the particles in the intense, electrostatic field and thus the time during whose particles are exposed to the ions in the field.
If the air flow does not receive any vortex motion before separating on the liquid flow, then the radial components of the forces of the air on opposite sides of the flow tend to be mutual Extinction so that a larger air flow is required to achieve a desired atomization to reach. The atomized particles are in a narrow area in the atomization and Charging zone limited. On the other hand, if the air flow affects the liquid flow with very substantial, tangential force components, the triggering of the atomizing air forces as far as possible and a satisfactory atomization is achieved with lower air currents, whereby remove the particles freely from each other in the electrostatic field and have significantly lower forces of the atomization air remain.
In the embodiment of the spray gun according to FIGS. 1 and 3 becomes the vortex air flow for the grooves 41 are created in the flange 40, through which the air on its way to the air opening 42 flows. A modification of the devices for generating the rotating air flow is in the F i g. 4 and 5 and includes an external jet forming device of a plurality of related, tubular air outlet elements 50, which on the surface of the Air cap 30 sit or are formed there. The air is these tubular outlet elements supplied from the air duct 14 through a suitable line, not shown. Each of the tubular Elements 15 are the air in the axial direction of the pipe and tangential to the flow of the Opening of emerging coating material. The tangential air currents can follow a little extend in front, as can be seen from FIG. 5 can be seen by placing the surface of the air cap 30 under a Angle of less than 90 ° against the axis of flow of the coating material particles. While the air flow in the jets from the tubular members 50 is preferably at about 77.6 l / min is a small, atomized air flow from a central annular air opening 52 submitted. The mean atomizing air flow only needs to be around 34 l / min. The charging needle 28 again sits centrally in the liquid opening 16. The tests have shown that with this modification the particle charge in the coating material is again such that in connection with the reduced overall speed caused by the rotating or vortex atomizing air movement is possible, the pattern in diameter by about three times between the uncharged and charged state is increased, as already in connection with the embodiment according to the F i g. 1 and 2 will be described.
While in the preceding description, air was basically mentioned as the atomizing agent it goes without saying that other known atomizing gases, such as steam or nitrogen, can use instead of compressed air.
