Glow discharge process for treating workpieces in a gas atmosphere, for. B. hardening process, Surface refinement by gas diffusion or cathode sputtering are known. Here it is It is very important that the glow discharge burns evenly during the often long treatment time and does not turn into arc discharges, which leave more or less large focal spots on the workpieces.
For this purpose, the electrical supply circuit for the glow discharge is usually influenced, for example by briefly reducing the operating voltage or switching on a Impedance. This influence takes place through suitable switching means, such as electronic circuits, which are controlled by signals that occur, for example, when the operating current of the glow discharge exceeds a certain setpoint. But it has been shown that it is difficult to Operation of a glow discharge used for metallurgical purposes to define this setpoint in such a way that that on the one hand an economical operation is possible, but on the other hand with certainty when occurring Disturbances in the discharge affect the supply circuit safely and quickly enough. These difficulties result mainly from the fact that the voltage-current characteristic is a such a glow discharge is not a straight line, but rather shows a course as shown, for example, in FIG. 1 is specified.
The present invention overcomes these difficulties and relates to a method of monitoring the electrical behavior of a high-current glow discharge for metallurgical processes, such as Diffusion processes, cathode sputtering, nitriding hardening and the like, for the purpose of influencing the supply circuits by signal controlled means. It is characterized in that in the below the Desired target curve for the operating point of the glow discharge in the voltage-current characteristic field a protection area including the area of unstable discharges is defined by a adjustable detector, which can be influenced by the supply circuits, which then sends a control signal for the said Returns average when the operating point deviates from the target curve so far that it is within the protection area falls.
Fig. 1). Diese beiden Einstellungenruns below the real characteristic of the glow discharge (see Fig. 1). Current and voltage are measured continuously and the position of the working point determined by them is assessed. If the operating point falls within the set protection range, the high-speed switch responds, ie it triggers the protective measures provided in the supply circuit. These generally consist in a known manner in a brief interruption of the supply voltage and, in the case of frequent repetitions of the disturbance, in completely switching off the power source. The guard line is usually set using two potentiometers. The first is used to set the minimum operating voltage, the other to set the inclination -τ * -. These two settings
Änderungen der Betriebsspannung erfordern keine Nachstellung des Schnellschal- ao ters; selbst für extremen Impulsbetrieb der Glimmentladung ist dieser Schnellschalter geeignet.are dependent on the type of gas, the pressure, the temperature and the cathode area of the discharge adapt. Changes to the operating voltage do not require the quick switch to be readjusted ters; This high-speed switch is suitable even for extreme pulsed operation of the glow discharge.
This quick switch principle is also suitable for three-phase current. There are three identical detector circuits, one for each phase, used and the three outputs connected in parallel. The protective measures are therefore triggered if a fault becomes noticeable in one of the three phases. In the device described here it is assumed that the transformer star point is on the output side is not connected or the transformer secondary is connected in a delta connection. the three symmetrical cathodes are each connected to one phase. The current measurement in each phase offers no problems. The measurement of the correct operating voltage is complicated because the discharge alternates burns between the three cathodes. It was found that the gas plasma approximately is on the most positive potential of the three cathodes. Thus there is always at least one of the electrodes cathodic, and the voltage between it and the positive plasma is decisive for its discharge. Since the metallic recipient approximately assumes the potential of the plasma, the voltage has proven to be useful to measure between each electrode and the recipient. So the measuring device of each phase becomes formed by contrasting the current of the phase in question and the voltage of the electrode in question the recipient is measured, whereby it is sufficient to record only the negative values in each case. the Malfunctions usually occur on the cathodically glowing electrodes, and in addition, this is anyway every disturbance is recorded because the discharge works without an O-conductor and therefore every disturbance current is a measuring point must happen.
Am Entladungsgefäß 2 liegt eine Spannung Ug, so daß über den Spannungsteiler 9,FIG. 2 shows an example of a simple circuit with only one transistor in the actual detector stage. 1 with the feeding rectifier and 2 with the discharge vessel in which the glow discharge takes place. The current in the glow discharge l g causes a voltage drop across the resistor 6. This voltage is applied to the input of a Schmitt trigger 4 via the resistor 7. This known Schmitt trigger responds when its input voltage U a reaches a certain value and then emits a signal at output 5. A voltage U g is applied to the discharge vessel 2, so that via the voltage divider 9,
This transistor 3 forms the essential part of the detector circuit. The voltage α U g causes a current through the emitter and collector of the transistor, which depends essentially on aUg, U 0 and the resistances. The voltage drop in the resistor 7 caused by this current counteracts the voltage resulting from the current I g and thus allows the Schmitt trigger 4 to respond only when the current I g is correspondingly higher. The protection line that results from this and similar circuits and delimits the protection area is shown in FIG. 1 shown. With 1 the real characteristic of the glow discharge is designated, with 2 the through a circuit according to FIG. The protection line reached 2, and the hatched area 3 represents the protection area. The protection area is limited to the left and does not extend to current zero, because a minimum current must flow in order to make the Schmitt trigger respond. However, this is not an annoying limitation. The Schmitt trigger responds when the operating point given by U g and l g lies in the shaded protection area 3.
