Description
Process for Making Magnetic Materials The invention relates to the manufacture of magnetic materials. In particular, it relates to manufacturing of ferromagnetic substances, such as those used for the production of magnetic impulses Objects and means, e.g. B. magnetic tapes, strips, foils or paints and inks.
Manufacture of magnetic fabrics used as coatings on tapes or strips or used as pigments to print magnetic surfaces, is not new. Magnetic substances are already made using a number of processes manufactured. However, such methods present various difficulties as to why many attempts have been made to produce magnetic materials by processes in which such difficulties and deficiencies do not arise.
It is known that various non-magnetic oxides of iron by chemical reduction, e.g. B. with gaseous hydrogen at elevated temperatures, be converted into the magnetic form, Fe304, which is then further converted into y-FeO " Oxide with more favorable magnetic properties, due to wild oxidation at elevated levels Temperatures can be converted.
While the chemistry of such processes is straightforward, the same is true by no means for their technology. So any over-reduction or over-oxidation must be done carefully should be avoided because otherwise a deterioration in the magnetic properties is effected. With the use of a reducing gas at elevated temperatures are always associated with dangers. Furthermore, the rapid flow of heated Gases (both reducing and oxidizing gases) in motion over and over held powder, fine particles are dragged away.
The method according to the invention enables the two-stage procedure avoided, which is characteristic of the previously known method. Further be thereby the risk of explosion and the rather considerable loss of material switched off, which are associated with the known procedures. In addition to overcoming of these difficulties, the method according to the invention causes a considerable amount Acceleration of the stages of filtration, drying and conversion and has the further advantage that the reactions that occur are self-contained entertain and control yourself. The finished one, in the form of a magnetic material present product has magnetic properties that match the magnetic properties the previously known substances are the same or superior, and has the additional Advantage of better dispersion properties in magnetic pigment preparations.
The method according to the invention for the production of magnetic substances is characterized in that an aqueous slurry of an oxide of iron mixed with a solution of a soluble soap, the soap by adding a salt with one which reacts with the soluble soap to form an insoluble soap Cation falls, the solids obtained separates and dries and the solids heated in air to a temperature at which a reaction begins, which one runs to the end and wins the magnetic material.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention an oxide of iron is suspended in a solution of a soluble soap. then a solution of a salt is added, which is an insoluble compound with the soap forms. Then the insoluble material is allowed to precipitate, whereupon the solid Fabric filtered, washed and dried and finally aired to a temperature is heated, in which an exothermic, self-sustaining reaction occurs, whereby a magnetic substance with superior dispersing properties and magnetic Values is formed. When performing the invention Process one starts from a ferric oxide, preferably in hydrated form, more suitable Grain size and shape made by one of the known precipitation methods has been. This ferric oxide is slurried with stirring. The slurry can be that obtained in the manufacture of the oxide. However, if interfering ions are present, then you can use the liquid initially obtained during manufacture wash or drain. A soluble fatty acid soap becomes this iron oxide slurry added, which leads to a high degree of dispersion. A solution of a salt that contains a cation which leads to the formation of a very poorly soluble compound with the Anion of the fatty acid soap is capable of being in stoichiometric proportions slowly added to the slurry. This makes it lumpy, easily filterable Material received. This product is filtered, washed, dried and powdered and then heated in air to a temperature of about 100 ° C. At about 100 ° C sets in a spontaneous reaction that continues on its own and is self-regulating is. Once the reaction has been completed, the evolution of gas ceases and the product cools itself down. The iron oxide pigment formed is a good one suitable product for the production of magnetic coatings.
Eine entsprechende Zubereitung mit y-Fe203 besaß eine Viskosität von 92 cP.The following examples illustrate the invention without restricting it. Particle size range from 0.2 to 1.0 [, and a needle shape of on average 1:10, as described in Example 1, processed. The product obtained had a coercive force of about 325 Oersted and a remanence of 2250 Gauss. The resin preparation given in Example 1 had a viscosity of 72 cP with this material. EXAMPLE 3 A sample of 8-Fe00H produced by the method of patent 1173377 with a grain size range of 0.01 to 0.2 # t and lamellar shape with an aspect ratio of 3: 1 was processed according to the procedure described in Example 1. The final product had a coercive force of 230 Oersteds and a remanence of 1200 Gauss. The resin preparation given in Example 1 had a viscosity of 64 cP with this material. EXAMPLE 4 A sample of red a-Fe 2 O 3 with a grain size range from 0.03 to 0.4 [and a needle shape averaging 4: 1 was processed as described in Example 1. The product had a coercive force of 300 Oersted and a remanence of 1650 Gauss. Example 1 46.8 kg of a hydrated ferric oxide with acicular particles 0.03-0.4 l in diameter and with an average length to diameter ratio of 4: 1 were slurried in 1161 water. To this end, a solution of 15.3 kg of sodium oleate in 1581 water was added and thoroughly mixed with it. The resulting slurry was vigorously stirred while a solution of 5.6 kg of barium chloride dihydrate in 19 liters of water was added dropwise. Stirring was continued for an additional 30 minutes after which the slurry was placed on a filter. The filtration was very rapid and the filter residue was washed to remove soluble salts. After drying at 60 to 70 ° C, it was introduced through a No. 4 screen (screen openings 4.76 mm) into a ventilated rotating drum calciner. The calciner was heated slowly until the exothermic reaction began. After 3 hours the reaction had ended and the material had cooled down to the point where it could be removed. A magnetic powder having a coercive force of 270 oersteds and a remanence of 2000 Gauss was obtained by gentle pulverization. A 201% preparation of the product in a coating composition of soy-modified alkyd resin and toluene as solvent gave a low shear viscosity (10 rev./min., Office 1 d) of 80 eP. A corresponding preparation with y-Fe 2 O 3 had a viscosity of 92 cP.
Example 2 A sample of a by a conventional precipitation process in aqueous Medium obtained ca-Fe00H with an example 5 after that described in example 1 Working method was a number of substances using Fe00H with a grain size range from 0.1 to 1.0 [. and a needle shape of 4: 1. It was sodium soaps various fatty acids are used in constant molar ratios. Different salts were used as chlorides or sulfates in a molar ratio that of the example 1 barium chloride used was equivalent (number of moles of insoluble soap constant), added. The magnetic properties of the end products are in Tables I and II listed.
It was found that the cation of the formed insoluble soap has a significant influence on the achieved magnetic properties, whereas the anion effect is secondary. For example, fatty acid gives barium salts very good properties, as can be seen from Table I, preparation 1 to 4. The preparations 4 a, 4 b and 4 c show the reproducibility from batch to batch. The preparations 4, 5 and 6 show that the amount of precipitant used is not critical, although of course very small amounts will produce poorer results would deliver. Conversely, very large amounts can be used in a high percentage Lead to impurities in the product, which proportionally »dilutes« the remanence values would. With a ratio of 1:24 a good product (compared to y-Fe2 03 tape pigment) and a sufficient safety margin for processing.
