Description
Process for the production of alkali hydroxide solutions with reduced silicate content by causticizing sodium carbonate solutions. The aluminate and silicate content alkali solutions produced by causticizing interferes with their further technical Use (e.g. rayon manufacture). Of the already known methods for The production of pure clear liquors failed to separate the silicon dioxide Iron (III) hydroxide in the formation of very voluminous, poorly settling precipitates. Even if one according to the German patent specification 704 293 before or after Addition of calcium compounds with a ferric compound added that calcium ferric silicate is retained, there remains a certain amount for further processing or use disturbing percentage of silicate dissolved during the precipitation at normal working temperatures is also partly voluminous and difficult to filter off.
Furthermore, there is also a method from German patent specification 649 365 for the production of alkali hydroxide solutions by causticizing the carbonates in known aqueous solution with lime, the solution before the deposition of the resulting Calcium carbonate 2 to 15% of a water-soluble magnesium salt or magnesium oxide or hydroxide is added. However, this addition is only a reduction caused by the undesirable aluminum content of the limestone and not at the same time a useful reduction in silicate content.
According to the invention it was surprisingly found that alkali hydroxide solutions reduced silicate content by causticizing sodium carbonate solutions can be made that the causticizing is carried out by means of a lime, that by burning a mixture of limestone poor in magnesium compounds with iron compounds in the order of about 100 / "based on the weight of the limestone and calculated as ferric oxide.
It was further found that a reduced silicate content also caused Causticizing sodium carbonate solutions can be achieved if the Caustification is made by means of a lime that is naturally burned more common, an iron content of about 3 percent by weight, calculated as iron (III) oxide and based on the weight of limestone, containing, other accompanying substances, in particular Magnesium, poor limestone grades has been preserved.
When burning lime with the addition of iron compounds, e.g. B. Iron (III) oxide, and / or when burning iron-containing, low-magnesium limestones can be caused by the reaction of the silicon and calcium-containing compounds at high Temperatures a quantitative conversion to ferric silicates or other poorly soluble Iron-silicon compounds can be achieved. With a second stage treatment the low-silica alkalis can then be freed from the aluminum. The dissolution The silicates present in lime and coke ash are formed by the addition of iron compounds (about 5 to 10 percent by weight of the limestone, calculated as iron (III) oxide) and / or Use of iron-containing natural limestones with a content of iron compounds of about 3 to 5 percent by weight, calculated as iron (III) oxide, avoided when burning. From the caustic alkali solutions obtained using the quick lime produced in this way can then the dissolved aluminum oxide by a known method, for example by adding magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide, are precipitated.
It is known that they contain the causticizing of alkali carbonate solutions the technically usual concentration of 200 g alkali carbonate, z. B. sodium carbonate per liter of alkali solutions with z. B. about 143 g caustic soda per liter usually 2000 to 5000 g of dissolved silicon dioxide, calculated per ton of caustic alkali, such only 100 g of silicon dioxide produced by electrolysis using the mercury process per ton of caustic alkali.
Calculated by adding 5 to 10 percent by weight of iron compounds as iron (III) oxide, to powdered or lumpy limestone of grain sizes 20th to 40 mm and baking the mixture at lime kiln temperature, preferably 1200 to 1300 ° C, a hard black product is created that disperses well in water. You can burn the lime with gas, electrically or with the addition of coke. If you causticize alkali carbonate solutions with the iron-containing quick lime, such as B. soda solution or potash solution, so go much less than 2000 up to 5000 g of silicon dioxide per ton of caustic alkali in solution. It is created in a mixture with the calcium carbonate formed during causticizing, a non-voluminous, silicon dioxide-containing one Residue. If, on the other hand, you try to add silica later by adding To remove iron (IIl) compounds from the caustic alkali solutions, one gets a way Precipitation difficult to separate due to its voluminous nature.
B. Eisen(II)-carbonat, vorliegen. The reduction in the silica content in the caustic alkali solutions in the procedure according to the invention results from Examples 1 and 2. It is an essential advantage achieved by the invention that the causticizing, the removal of the silica and the deposition of the silica-rich precipitate in one operation take place. As has been found, an addition of 5 to 10 percent by weight of iron (III) oxide to the limestone is generally required. But if you use a red-colored, i.e. iron-containing limestone or red marble with only about 3 to 5 percent by weight of iron (III) oxide and a content of silicon dioxide that does not exceed the usual level as the starting material for the production of the quick lime, then leave it also gain alkali solutions because of the fine distribution of the iron compounds in the stone, which do not contain more than about 600 g of silicon dioxide per ton of alkali metal hydroxide. Compared to the 2000 to 5000 g of silicon dioxide per tonne of caustic alkali in alkalis, which are produced without the addition of iron compounds when burning the lime or using lime with a very low iron content, this means a considerable approximation of the silica content of around 100 g per ton of the Alkalis obtained by the mercury process. The iron can also be used in limestone as a divalent compound, e.g. B. iron (II) carbonate are present.
If you continue to clean the low-silica alkalis using known methods by precipitation of the dissolved aluminum oxide with magnesium hydroxide or with magnesium oxide, a final liquor is obtained that is largely in terms of silicate and aluminate content that is the result of electrolysis using the mercury process.
The procedure described is when using ferrous limestone or even with the addition of iron compounds, as was previously the case with causticizing low silicon dioxide (up to 0.5%) and aluminum oxide (up to 0.5%). Higher magnesium oxide contents of the limestone interfere with the described Effect of iron (III) oxide. However, they cause that to be undesirable as well Alumina of limestone (or coke ash) only in insignificant quantities appears in the lye. A simultaneous presence or a simultaneous addition both substances, namely iron (III) oxide and magnesium oxide, are not appropriate, since the effects of the two substances cancel each other out. That's why the Limestone did not use large quantities of limestone to produce a low-silica lye Contains magnesium carbonate (dolomite or magnesite).
