The invention relates to a method for treating paper in order to improve its physical properties to enhance.
As is well known, the poor physical properties of an ordinary paper sheet in the wet condition can be improved by impregnating the paper with a polymer latex, dried and then subsequently treated with an organic isocyanate solution. Presumably that networks Isocyanate is the elastomeric polymer with the paper through urethane bridges, the fibers of the paper mechanically connected to the polymer. This networking will probably make the The hydrophilic character of the paper fibers is reduced, so that they absorb less water. In any case Paper sheets treated in this way have an increased tear strength and even in the moist state better resistance to wear and tear.
The main difficulty with this known method is that the isocyanate must be dissolved in a non-reactive solvent, otherwise it reacts mainly and quickly with the active hydrogen present in the latex and forms insoluble diurea compounds. A substantial amount of the isocyanate is consumed in this process and is therefore no longer available when the elastomeric polymer is crosslinked with the paper.
The use of solvents is also disadvantageous because they are uneconomical, safety measures require and even after pressing with pressure rollers up to 100% of the paper weight in impregnated paper remain. Because of the amount of absorbed solvent must be expensive Recovery devices are used, so the known methods because of the fire hazard and the general disadvantages of a two-step process are unsuitable; z. B. must paper treated with latex is conveyed to another machine and in a separate operation with the Isocyanate solution are treated. Such a method is e.g. B. German Patent 955 206 can be seen, according to which a polymer emulsion is first applied in a multistage process and is dried. Only then is a blocked isocyanate sprayed onto the finished latex impregnation. The disadvantages of this process are obvious: you get a hard, brittle, patent leather-like one Surface course, because the polyisocyanates only with the synthetic rubber latex - but not with the cellulose fibers of the paper - come into contact.

Die bisher bei Verwendung eines Lösungsmittels auftretenden Schwierigkeiten werden damit vermieden.which paper can be impregnated with latex and treated with isocyanate without the use of solvents and without the need for a two-step process. In this method, the isocyanate with respect to the present active hydrogen is stabilized by allowing to react the isocyanate with a substance which makes the isocyanate group at ordinary temperatures, non-reactive, whereas it converted when heated to temperatures greater than about 14O 0 C and reactivated by can be. Since this means that the isocyanate can be added to the latex in a non-reactive form, it is now possible to impregnate the paper with the polymer latex and also with the isocyanate in a single operation. This treatment gives the paper the same properties as treatment with latex and subsequent treatment with an isocyanate dissolved in an organic solvent. The difficulties previously encountered when using a solvent are thus avoided.

Table I gives the values obtained for various amounts of blocked isocyanate in the system. The papers were impregnated with about 20 parts of polymer per 100 parts of paper. Of course increases the wet strength and wet elongation of the impregnated Paper with the amount of blocked isocyanate in the impregnation agent. The increase in wet strength is relatively large when the amount of isocyanate is increased to 20 parts by weight. The optimal one The amount of isocyanate in the impregnating agent is between 15 and 20 parts by weight. The wet strength a sheet treated with such an impregnating agent is about eight to nine times larger than that of a corresponding control sheet not treated with isocyanate. Also the effect of the Extensibility follows wet strength within narrow limits.

It appears that the physical properties of a treated arch in wet and dry condition with increased impregnation.

Diese Emulsion wurde dann zu 100 Teilen eines Gemisches gegeben, welches aus verschiedenen Anteilen eines Polyvinylacetatlatex (die gleiche Latex wie im Beispiel I) und einem harzartigen Material bestand.10 parts of a reaction product from toluene-2,4-diisocyanate, Trimethylolpropane and phenol were emulsified according to Example I. This emulsion was then added to 100 parts of a mixture, which consists of various proportions of a polyvinyl acetate latex (the the same latex as in Example I) and a resinous material.
Sheets of the impregnated paper web were then treated further as in the previous example, prepared and examined.
The effects on the physical properties of the treated sheet are shown in Table II recorded. From these results it can be assumed that the impregnant contained 60 to 70% of the extender can be added without seriously affecting the tensile strength or elongation of the sheet is changed.

Sheets of the impregnated base paper were then treated with this dispersion, prepared and examined as described above.
In Table IV the wet strength is that treated by the emulsion process (according to Example I) Sheet compared with that of the sheet treated according to Example IV. The notable difference between Both of these methods consist in the way the blocked isocyanates are dispersed in the latex are. These papers were impregnated with about 22 parts per 100 parts of paper. Apparently is independent of the process used, the wet strength of a treated sheet is greater than that a control sheet which does not contain isocyanate. The method with dispersion also appears of the isocyanates in latex have a significant effect on the wet strength of the sheet. The wet strength a sheet treated according to the method according to Example I is larger than a sheet, which was impregnated by this method, since the blocked isocyanate is in the emulsified form is finely distributed in the latex.

In Example V, the diphenylamine adduct of toluene-2,4-diisocyanate was prepared, emulsified, and then dispersed in a polyvinyl acetate latex which was later used to treat the paper.
This solution was then stirred for 2 hours and allowed to stand for 12 hours. The toluene was then distilled off from the liquid, whereupon the liquid was cooled to -20 ° C and used to separate the precipitate was filtered.
In many cases it is highly desirable to modify the properties of a treated sheet in order to to be able to adapt to the corresponding requirements. For example, the strength product is Paper is of more importance than strength alone. As a strength product, the product is the Strength per inch width of the paper multiplied by the percent elongation is understood. Great strength products can by varying the reactants in the corresponding recipe for the Impregnation compound can be achieved. In particular, it has been found that elongation and strength are a treated sheet can be changed if synthetic polymers, such as butadiene-styrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile, are added to the mass. In such cases the additional polymer must be used but be non-ionic in nature. However, if it is not possible, the polymer should be nonionic To use a system, such a system should be used, its components in and of itself are stable. The components originally acting as carriers for the isocyanate must be nonionic while the other component may contain an ionic material. In the mix these form both components due to the effect of the ionic component on the blocked isocyanates an unstable system. Before the destabilization occurred to a substantial extent is, this fluid system is used to treat the paper in the manner described above. A normal absorption of the mass by the paper during the treatment consumes the compound, before a substantial destabilization has taken place ίο, and the further destabilization then takes place go when the polymer is in the paper.

Dieser Latex entsprach der im Beispiel I beschriebenen.4 parts of the reaction product of toluene-2,4-diisocyanate, trimethylolpropane and phenol were emulsified as in Example I. This emulsion and 0.2 parts of a modified sodium polyacrylate were then dispersed in 30 parts of polyvinyl acetate latex. This latex corresponded that described in Example I.
Komponente BComponent B
.0.5 part of ammonium caseinate was added to 70 parts of a synthetic polymer with stirring rubbery latex made of 50:50 butadiene styrene. Then there were 2 parts an antioxidant and 0.3 part of the sodium salt of tetraacetic acid ethylenediamine added to the liquid. After mixing, 1% ammonia (based on the liquid Substances of the system) are added with stirring. .
Materials in der einzelnen Masse verschieden groß.
The component A was uniformly dispersed in the component B, and the resulting liquid was used to treat the paper in the manner previously described.
The paper was then tested and showed a strength product which was even greater than that of a similar paper which had been treated with the basic system described above (which only contained polymers or copolymers of polyvinyl acetate). To illustrate this increase, several liquid compositions were produced by the method according to Example VIII and used to treat paper. In each case, including the comparative tests, the amounts of polymeric material in the individual mass were different. Furthermore, the use of isocyanate in the treatment of the control strips was excluded. The amount of isocyanate used is calculated according to parts in a latex which has 100 parts of polymer. The papers treated with these compositions were tested for strength and the result is shown in Table VIII. It appears that an increase in wet strength is achieved by using a 50:50 synthetic copolymer of butadiene-styrene in place of the polyvinyl acetate latex of the original formulation. It also appears that greater wet strength is achieved when blends of polyvinyl acetate with 50:50 butadiene styrene are used.

A major advantage of the two-component system is the destabilization of the blocked isocyanates, which is triggered at relatively low temperatures. In any case, the mixing system is stable for at least 24 hours after mixing. Therefore, the paper can be impregnated with the polymeric system (including the isocyanates) while destabilization takes place when the polymer is on the paper. It has been found that when using a two-component system, satisfactory curing at temperatures down to about 50 ° C. can be achieved in just 3 days. This is particularly suitable for paper production, as the paper is treated, hot-rolled and stored for a few days before loading.
The following Table IX compares the wet strength of identically treated samples, one being cured for 2 minutes at 177 ° C and the other sample for 3 days at 50 ° C. In all cases, the paper was impregnated with a material, which was prepared according to Example VIII with the exception that the amount of isocyanate and the impregnation were changed as specified ". It appears to be 80 to 100% he d at a high temperature cure reached wet strength even achieved at low hardening temperatures.

As can be seen from the above figures, these are the physical properties of this treated paper Improved for both dry and wet areas of application. The big rise the dry elongation results in a paper with a very large strength product, a property that for work purposes and especially for multi-walled bags is desirable. The extremely astonishing increase The wet strength enables the use of paper for packaging wet products, which otherwise cannot be successfully packed in paper sacks. These improvements to the physical Properties of the paper are of the utmost importance to the industry. It is known nowadays over 100,000 tons of paper are used for the usual annual production of multi-walled paper sacks will. This is mainly due to the fact that at least six layers of paper are used Must use manufacture of these sacks. Up to six layers are needed to make the sidewall has the desired strength. When using a paper produced according to the invention however, this requirement is considerably reduced. This can be achieved by significantly reducing the Layers and consequently the required weight of such paper bags happen. Using of paper treated according to the invention, these sacks can in only four and in many cases can even be produced in just two layers. In many cases, despite a reduced number of Layers in such bags, the wet strength of these bags is considerable, namely by 400 to 500%> can be increased. This is only one particular advantage of the treatment method according to the invention, which is given for explanation only.
