Description
The present invention relates to fuel cell systems, particularly high temperature solid oxide fuel cell systems.
A particular problem lies in the assembling of individual tubular SOFCs, where there is a great challenge in the low-loss current tapping of the cells and in the minimization of the ohmic losses (to improve the efficiency of the cell). It should also be noted that since the voltage of the individual interconnected cells is thermodynamically limited to approximately 1 V, high-voltage transformers must be used to achieve higher voltages or the serial electrical interconnections of the cells must be made. The latter is not easy to realize, especially in tubular cells compared to planar cells. Furthermore, the lowest possible weight together with a compact design plays a major role in the usability of stack structures.
The object of the present invention is to provide a fuel cell system design which enables low-loss current tapping of the cells and a minimization of ohmic losses while at the same time low weight and small volume of the system, respecting a good gas supply of the fuel cells in the stack and good gas tightness.
This object is achieved by a fuel cell system according to
The basic idea of the present invention is as follows: Instead of incorporating fuel cells into a continuous, e.g. As metallic, stack with very long current paths and thus high ohmic losses and only a few, usually complicated circuit options, they are in smaller segments that form the complete stack of electrically isolated from each other, built. This structure opens up a variety of possibilities for electrically interconnecting the cells and the segments with one another, as shown in the examples and claims, which make it possible to set the number of parallel and / or series electrically connected elements, such that the desired power and the desired voltages and thus the current density at the tap of the segments remains so low that the conductors can be constructed as small and as light as possible and at the same time the failure of a single cell or contact does not result in a total failure of the system (due to the possible failure) electrical parallel connection of multiple cells in the segments and / or multiple segments in the stack).
The different arrangements and shapes of the segments lead to an optimal use of the space of the fuel cell stack, in particular if other components such as burners, reformers or heat exchangers are integrated into this structure in addition to the fuel cells. With this structure, also improved heat management of the fuel cells, especially of high-temperature fuel cells, is easier to realize. With the separation into segments, the gas supply to the individual segments can be parallel (can also be controlled differently depending on the individual segments, for example by means of valves) or relatively simply be carried out serially. A serial connection of the gases allows for improved fuel utilization, and the use of the electrically insulating structured segments allows the flexible setting of various operating conditions such as working voltage and / or current density according to the electrical connection variants.
The structure can be described as follows: Fuel cell system with a plurality of tubular, in particular microtubular, fuel cells, in particular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), comprising at least one conductive carrier or Carrier section, which is subdivided into a plurality of electrically insulated, self-conductive segments, wherein at least two of the segments have one, but advantageously a plurality, fuel cell (s) which are at least partially arranged on the segment and / or integrated into the segment, one of its electrodes is in electrical contact with the segment.
The fuel cell system is therefore equipped with tubular fuel cells, in particular SOFCs, so that the stack is split into individual segments.
