Description
The present invention relates to a forged high-strength Al-Zn alloy product having an improved compound of corrosion resistance and toughness, produced by the method of claim 1, and a plate product of such an alloy product produced by the method. In particular, the present invention relates to a forged high strength Al-Zn alloy as designated by the 7000 series of the International Aluminum Association Nomenclature for structural applications in aviation. Even more particularly, the present invention relates to a novel Al-Zn alloy chemistry window having improved strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance compounds that does not require specific aging or heat treatments.
To improve resistance to stress corrosion and coating corrosion as well as fracture toughness, it is known to artificially age these AA7000 series alloys. Artificial aging to T79, T76, T74 or T73 temper improves their resistance to stress corrosion and film corrosion and fracture toughness on the order of magnitude indicated (with T73 being best and T79 being close to T6) but at the expense of strength in comparison to the T6 temper condition. An acceptable temper for achieving an acceptable level of tensile strength, stress corrosion resistance, film corrosion resistance, and fracture toughness is the T74 temper, which is a limited aged condition between T73 and T76. Such T74 tempering is accomplished by aging the aluminum alloy product at temperatures of 121 ° C for 6 to 24 hours and 171 ° C for approximately 14 hours.
Depending on the design criteria for a given aircraft component, even small improvements in strength, toughness, or corrosion resistance result in weight savings that are reflected in fuel economy over the life of an aircraft. To meet these requirements, several other Series 7000 alloys have been developed.
It has been reported that the known precipitation-hardened aluminum alloys AA7075 and other AA7000 series alloys in the T6 temper condition did not provide sufficient corrosion resistance under certain conditions. However, the T7 coatings, which improve the resistance of the alloys to stress corrosion cracking, significantly reduce the strength over the T6 state.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved Al-Zn alloy for slab products having high strength and an improved balance of toughness and corrosion behavior. In particular, it is the object of the present invention to provide an alloy suitable for airfoil aviation applications having improved compressive strength with properties better than the properties of a conventional AA7055 alloy in T77 temper.
Another object of the invention is to achieve an AA7000 series aluminum alloy exhibiting strength in the range of T6 temper and toughness and corrosion resistance properties in the range of T73 temper.
Furthermore, it is an object of the present invention to provide an alloy which can be used in an age creep forming process and which is an alloy which does not require a complicated or troublesome aging process.
The present invention has a number of preferred objects.
The aforementioned objects of the invention are achieved by using the characterizing features of claim 1.
Further preferred embodiments are described and specified in the subclaims. A plate product is claimed and described in claim 14 and the corresponding subclaims.

- a) casting a block having the following composition (in wt%): Zn about 6.0 to 9.5 Cu about 1.3 to 2.4 Mg about 1.5 to 2.6 Mn <0.12 Zr <0.20, preferably 0.05 to 0.15 Cr <0.10 Fe <0.25, and preferably <0.12 Si <0.25, and preferably <0.12 Ti <0.10 Hf and / or V <0.25, optionally Ce and / or Sc <0.20, especially in a range from 0.05 to 0.15, other elements in each case less than 0.05 and in total less than 0.25, balance aluminum, and wherein (in wt%): 0.1 [Cu] + 1.3 <[Mg] <0.2 [Cu] + 2.15, and preferably 0.2 [Cu] + 1.3 <[ Mg] <0.1 [Cu] + 2.15

Such an AA7000 series alloy chemistry window exhibits excellent properties when processed into thin plate products that are preferably used for aerospace wing applications.
The aforementioned chemistry has properties comparable to or better than the existing T77 tempering series alloys without the use of the tedious and complicated T77 aging cycles described above with existing AA7 × 50 or AA7 × 55 series alloys. The chemistry results in an aluminum product that is not only superior in terms of cost, but also easier to produce because fewer processing steps are required. In addition, chemistry allows for new manufacturing techniques such as geriatric reshaping, which is not feasible when a T77 temper alloy is applied. Even better, the fact that the chemistry defined above can be further aged to T77 temper, further improving corrosion resistance as compared to the two-stage aging process described hereinafter, particularly improves the layer corrosion performance.
By means of this invention, it has been found that a selected range of elements using a greater amount of Zn and a specific compound of a particular range of Mg and Cu exhibit substantially better compounds of strength, toughness, and corrosion behavior, such as layer corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
While it has been reported that the copper levels should be kept higher, preferably above about 2.2% by weight, to improve the layer corrosion and stress corrosion cracking behavior, it has been reported that better strength and density joints can be achieved with relatively low zinc contents.
In this invention, however, it has been found that increased levels of zinc, along with an optimized magnesium to copper ratio, results in better strength while maintaining good corrosion performance and toughness better than conventional T77 temper alloys. It is therefore advantageous to have a combined zinc, magnesium and copper content in a range between about 11.50 and 12.50 (in wt%) without manganese and below 11.00 in the presence of manganese, preferably between 0, 06 and 0.12 (in wt .-%) is to have.
A preferred amount of magnesium is in a range of 0.2 [Cu] + 1.3 <[Mg] <0.1 [Cu] + 2.15, with a range of 0.2 [Cu] + 1.4 <[Mg] <0.1 [Cu] + 1.9 is the most preferable. Copper is in a range of about 1.5 to 2.1, with a range of 1.5 to less than 2.0 being more preferable. The balance of magnesium and copper is important to inventive chemistry.
Copper and magnesium are important elements to add strength to the alloy. Too low amounts of magnesium and copper result in a decrease in strength, while too high levels of magnesium and copper result in lower corrosion behavior and problems in the weldability of the alloy product. Prior art techniques used special aging techniques to improve strength, and low levels of magnesium and copper are used to achieve good corrosion performance. To achieve a compromise in strength, toughness, and corrosion performance, it has been found that copper and magnesium levels (in weight percent) between about 1.5 and 2.3 provide a good balance for thick alloy products. However, corrosion behavior is the critical parameter for thin alloy products, so lower amounts of copper and magnesium must be used, resulting in lower strength. Through the claimed chemistry of the present invention, it is now possible to achieve strength levels in the range of a T6 temper alloy while maintaining corrosion performance characteristics similar to those of T74 temper alloys.
Apart from the amounts of magnesium and copper, the invention discloses a balance of magnesium and copper levels over zinc, especially the balance of magnesium over zinc, which gives the alloy these performance characteristics. The improved corrosion resistance of the alloy according to the invention has the coating corrosion resistance properties of EB or better, preferably EA or better.
Diese Prüfung ist die ASTM-Standard-G47-Prüfung (G47-98).These film corrosion properties are required by the resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SKR) and film corrosion resistance currently required for AA7075, AA7050, and AA7150 products aged to T73, T74, and T76, along with the typical Behavior of T6 allowances measured. To determine whether commercial alloys meet SRC standards, a given specimen is subjected to predefined test conditions. Rod-shaped specimens are subjected to immersion strokes in a 3.5% aqueous NaCl solution for 10 minutes, followed by air drying for 50 minutes, while being pulled at both ends under a constant strain (stress level). Such a test is normally carried out for at least 20 days (or for a shorter period if the test specimen fails or fails the test before the expiry of 20 days). This test is the ASTM standard G47 test (G47-98).
Another preferred SRK test performed according to ASTM Standard G47 (G38-73) is used for extruded alloy products containing thin sheet products. This test consists of pressing the opposite ends of a C-shaped ring using constant strain levels and changing immersion conditions substantially similar to those described above. While AA7075, AA7050 or AA7150-T6 tempered alloy does not pass the SRC test in less than 20 days and the coating corrosion properties are EC or ED, the corrosion resistance performance of the T76-, T74-, T73 coatings increases. The film corrosion properties of T73 reach EA or better. Specific examples are described hereinafter.
The inventive alloy has a chemistry with a preferred amount of magnesium and copper of about 1.93 when the amount (in weight percent) of zinc is about 8.1. However, the amount (in weight%) of zinc is in a range of 6.1 to 8.3, with a range of 6.1 to 7.0 being more preferable when manganese is less than 0.05, and preferably less than 0.02. Some preferred embodiments of the present invention are described in the examples hereinafter.
The amount of manganese (in weight percent) is preferably in the range of about 0.06 to 0.12 when the amount of zinc is above 7.6. For processes that can cause recrystallization of the alloy's microstructure, manganese helps or contributes to grain size control. The preferred levels of manganese are lower than conventional AA7000 alloys, but can be increased when zinc is raised.
The amount of additional alloying elements Ce and / or Sc is less than 0.20, preferably in a range of 0.05 to 0.15, with 0.10 being most preferable.

Such a two-stage aging treatment achieves a corrosion behavior similar to the corrosion behavior of a T76 temper alloy. However, the deformed and heat treated product is artificially aged, wherein the aging step comprises a third heat treatment at a temperature in a range of 105 ° C to 135 ° C for more than 20 hours and less than 30 hours. This T77 temper aging process is known and even increases the performance characteristics compared to the two-stage aging process. However, the two-stage aging process results in thin aluminum alloy products that are in part comparable to and sometimes better than T77 temper products.
It is also possible to artificially age the deformed and heat treated product to T79 or T76 temper with a two-stage aging process. After homogenizing and / or preheating the ingot after casting, it is preferably advisable to thermoform the ingot and, optionally, cold-form the thermoformed products into a formed product of 15 mm to 45 mm to thereby obtain a thin plate.
Such a plate product of high strength Al-Zn alloy can be obtained by an alloy having a composition as described above and prepared by the method as described above. Such a plate product is preferably usable as a thin aircraft element, and more preferable to use as a stretched structural forming element. Even more preferred is a plate product for use as a wing member, preferably a thin skin member of a wing or spar of an aircraft.
The foregoing and other features and advantages of the alloys of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description of preferred embodiments.
Beispiel 1example 1
Tests were performed to compare the performance of Alloys 2 and 4 of the present invention with AA7150-T77 alloys. It has been found that the examples of alloys 2 and 4 of the present invention show an improvement over conventional AA7150 T77 temper alloys.
The aged alloys were then tested according to the following test conditions:
The tensile yield strength was measured according to EN 10.002, the coating corrosion resistance properties (EXCO) were measured according to ASTM G-34-97, stress corrosion cracking (SRK) was measured according to ASTM G-47-98, all in the ST direction, Kahn tears (toughness ) was measured according to ASTM E-399 and compressive strength (CYS) was measured according to ASTM E-9.
On Promising Alloy 4, additional SRC testing was performed using Alloy 4 specimens prepared according to the procedure described in ASTM G-47-98 (Standard Test Method for Determining Susceptibility to Stress Corrosion Cracking of AA7000 Series Aluminum Alloy Products) and Corrosive Atmosphere according to ASTM G-44-94 (Wechsle-dewing according to the standard practice for evaluating stress corrosion cracking resistance of metals and alloys by Wechsle dewetting in 3.5% NaCl solution) exposed.
As can be seen from Table 4, no decrease in residual strength was measured with increasing load, which means that no measurable stress corrosion occurred after 40 days as far as tensile properties were concerned.
Vergleichsbeispiel 2Comparative Example 2
When higher levels of strength are required and toughness properties are less important, conventional AA7055-T77 alloys rather than AA7150-T77 alloys are preferred as an alloy for topping applications. The present invention therefore discloses optimized copper and magnesium windows that exhibit properties that are equal to or better than conventional AA7055-T77 alloys.
While alloys 3 to 8 and 11 showed good toughness properties, alloys 1 to 5 and 9 and 10 showed good strength properties. Thus, alloys 3, 4 and 5 show a good balance of strength and toughness, so it is clear to have a copper content above 1.3 and a magnesium content above 1.6 (in weight percent) when zinc in an amount of 8.1 is present. Such amounts are lower limits for the copper and magnesium windows. As can be seen from Table 6, the toughness drops to unacceptably low levels when the copper and magnesium levels are too high (Alloys 1, 2, 9 and 10).
Beispiel 3 Example 3
As shown in Table 8, the toughness properties decrease while the strength properties increase. For alloys with high zinc levels, an optimized manganese level is between 0.05 and 0.12.
Beispiel 4Example 4
When higher levels of strength are required and toughness properties are less important, conventional AA7055-T77 alloys rather than AA7150-T77 alloys are preferred as an alloy for topping applications. The present invention therefore discloses optimized copper and magnesium windows that exhibit properties that are equal to or better than conventional AA7055-T77 alloys.
The inventive alloy has similar tensile properties as a conventional AA7055-T77 alloy. However, the properties in the ST direction are better than those of the conventional AA7055-T77 alloy. Also, the stress corrosion behavior is better than that of the AA7055-T77 alloy. The inventive alloy can therefore be used as a low-cost replacement for AR7055-T77 temper alloys, which is also useful for age-creep forming, demonstrating superior compressive strength and corrosion resistance.
