Description
Device for multiplying charge carriers, addendum to patent 1053 681 The invention relates to a device for generating charge carriers with a multiplication of the charge carriers generated by a primary voltage according to patent 1053 681. In this device, for charge carrier multiplication, the primarily generated charge carriers hit counter electrodes at such a speed that this creates X-rays which again trigger secondary charge carriers.
The yield of electrons released by the X-rays (Photo effect) depends on the frequency of the X-ray radiation and the electrode material. It must therefore be taken into account that on the electrodes of the device as well as on the anodes of the usual X-ray tubes, in addition to the X-rays, there are also rays with a spectrum that extends into the visible. The secondary electrons donating electrodes should therefore consist of a material that has this entire spectrum or at least over large parts of it a large electron yield Has.
It is known that the yield of electrons in the photoelectric effect increases in the X-ray area with the atomic number, and this increase is superimposed from the strong selective photo effect on the short-wave side of the absorption edge.
The photoelectrons released by the X-rays have a kinetic energy that ranges from zero to the energy corresponding to the quantum energy of the X-ray wavelength in question. This kinetic energy of the exiting electrons, since it is not necessary for the functioning of the secondary electron multiplier, can in turn be used again for further electron generation. For this purpose, according to the invention, the electrodes at which the X-rays release photoelectrons are to be provided with a thin surface layer in order to multiply these electrons by utilizing their kinematic energy. A suitable combination is e.g. B. silver with a vapor-deposited magnesium surface layer oxidized by heating (glow discharge) at a gas pressure of about 10-3 Torr. Other layers that donate secondary electrons on different substrates, such as those used for electron multiplication in the SEV, have also been used with success, such as cesium oxide, aluminum oxide and cesium-antimony layers. The layers partly produce a good photoelectron yield even when irradiated with long-wave X-ray light up to short-wave optical light, which is why the mentioned combinations between a carrier material with a higher atomic number and a coating of the mentioned layer materials produce a very good secondary electron yield in the present device for multiplying by X-ray radiation Load carriers resulted.
By using a carrier material, e.g. B. a thin film, their K- or L-beta radiation through the natural radiation of the anode used Materials are stimulated, e.g. B. a molybdenum foil and a silver anode achieved a particularly good yield.
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the present device is achieved in that the X-ray radiation in a large solid angle range meets the electrodes supplying secondary electrons.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, a positive voltage tungsten wire a is surrounded by a six-sided prism surface b with six-sided base surfaces corresponding to a honeycomb cell.
This cell had the advantage that, like the honeycomb, several cells could be joined together, with all cell walls belonging to two cells each. It was thereby achieved that all escaping electrons reach the discharge cells and thereby reach the anode in the tensile field.
