Description
DEUTSCHESGERMAN
The invention relates to a permanently sealed gas-tight Accumulator with means for gas consumption. In the known, permanently gas-tight closed Batteries, the electrolyte is fixed in the pores of the electrodes and separators. This definition of the electrolyte has the disadvantage that this measure limits the amount of electrolyte and thereby unfavorable effects on the capacity of the cell can be determined. Above all occurs in discharges with high current densities, caused by the necessarily proportionate high internal resistance, a significant drop in performance. So far, the principle, the electrolyte to be established only in gas-tight accumulators of smaller capacity. These disadvantages are particularly noticeable in a storage battery with acidic electrolytes when the latter - · As in the case of the lead-acid battery - is directly involved chemically during charging and discharging.
The object of the invention was, while avoiding the disadvantages listed above, to provide permanent gas-tight seals Manufacture accumulators of larger and larger capacity.
This object was achieved in that a permanently sealed gas-tight accumulator with liquid Electrolyte was produced, in addition to the positive and negative with active masses Electrodes contains one or more porous gas-consuming electrodes, which are made of electrically conductive, opposite The electrolyte are inert material and are partially immersed in the liquid electrolyte and on the other hand protrude into the gas space located above the electrolyte. The invention is it can be seen that the porous gas-consuming electrode has a cavity which is connected to the gas space is, while the majority of its outer surface in contact with the electrolyte stands.
A cell produced according to the proposed invention works with liquid electrolyte, so that all favorable properties of an open cell are fully retained. The gas consumption electrode has an arbitrarily shaped cavity, the opening of which is above the liquid level of the electrolyte and is in communication with the gas space. In this way it is achieved that the gas consumption the available area is significantly larger than with the previously known constructions, while a reduction in the external surface area in contact with the electrolyte is avoided.
Die gegenüber den bisher bekannten Formen durch Vergrößerung der Gasverzehrflächen ausgezeichnete Elektrode ist in hervorragendem Maße befähigt, den bei Überladung und Tiefentladung durch Gasentwick-Compared to the previously known forms, they are distinguished by the enlargement of the gas consumption area Electrode is excellently able to withstand overcharging and deep discharge by gas development.

Experience shows that during the charge and Overcharging the development of oxygen on the positive electrode of accumulators is almost inevitable is, so that the gas consumption electrode is usually connected to the negative electrode of the accumulator connected to consume the oxygen.
It is particularly advantageous to discharge the gas-consuming electrode insulated through the permanently gas-tight sealed housing and outside of the cells either with the positive or with the negative electrode to become electrically conductive associate. This makes it possible to use the battery much better than the charging and discharging conditions adapt so far. In addition, the gas-consuming electrode can be led out with the aid of a Ammeter to check immediately whether there is a balance between gas formation and gas consumption adjusts.
B. by switching on a possibly variable resistor, which is known per se between the gas consumption electrode and the negative electrode of the accumulator, the potential of the former to be more positive, in order to be certain of the area of hydrogen evolution at the gas consumption electrode to avoid. By means of an auxiliary voltage, the gas-consuming electrode can be compared to the electrolyte adjust in each case to the potential that offers the most favorable conditions for gas consumption. A further embodiment is therefore provided in which the gas-consuming electrode is used to adjust the potential via a possibly variable resistance

To prevent the liquid electrolyte from penetrating into the cavity of the gas-consuming electrode, their material can be impregnated with a hydrophobic substance. Another way that To avoid seepage of the electrolyte, the electrode material waiving the Make the impregnation so fine-pored that no electrolyte penetrates into the cavity of the electrode can.
The material used to manufacture the gas-consuming electrode is preferably made of sintered, metallic substances or from substances that are not counted among the metals, such as. B. coal, Silicon carbide, plastic made conductive, metal oxides, sulfides and carbides, and others. The outer wall the gas-consuming electrode can be thickened with a sheath made of a conventional swelling agent Cover the electrolyte solution that does not noticeably affect the speed of the ions. It may be advantageous to cover the thickened electrolyte with an inert and encasing porous tissue to increase the strength of the electrolyte shell. This covers this shell only that part of the surface of the gas consumption electrode which is immersed in the electrolyte. Another Embodiment is given by the possibility that the outer surface immersed in the electrolyte is surrounded by a semipermeable membrane that is only permeable to ions.

Fig. 2 vier mögliche Schaltungen zwischen der Gasverzehrelektrode und den negativen bzw. positiven Elektroden des Akkumulators zeigt.2 shows four possible circuits between the gas-consuming electrode and the negative or positive ones Shows the electrodes of the accumulator.
Ihre Ableitungen 8 und 9 durchtreten ebenfalls gasdicht den Behälter 6.In the middle of Fig. 1 can be seen in the gas-tight sealed accumulator container 6 from porous material existing gas consumption electrode 4. It protrudes from the liquid electrolyte 1 and carries, as far as it is surrounded by the electrolyte 1, a layer of thickened electrolyte 12. Around this To support the layer, it is additionally held by means of a porous or semipermeable cover 13. As a result of the hydrophobization of the porous gas electrode, its cavity 5, which is part of the gas space, remains 7 represents free of any liquid. The discharge line 10 of the cavity electrode leads in a gas-tight manner through the container lid. To the left and right of the cavity electrode 4 are the positive, 2, and negative electrodes 3. Their leads 8 and 9 also pass through the container 6 in a gas-tight manner.
In this case the connection is established via the conductor 11. This circuit can now be largely varied, as can be seen from FIG. So it's not just the point Invention, the cavity electrode 4 by a simple conductor 11 inside or outside the Housing to connect the positive electrode 2 or the negative electrode 3, but it. lies quite within the meaning of the invention and is in many cases of great practical importance, this elek
