It is known that 2,2-bis (p-oxyphenyl) propane by the action of 2 moles of phenol to 1 mole of acetone in the presence of condensing agents, which consist of strong mineral acids such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid.
When using concentrated sulfuric acid, a very rapid reaction has been achieved, but then the yield, based on acetone, exceeds; not 58.5 ° / 0 . It has, however, good yields "achieved by using aqueous sulfuric acid at a concentration of 65 to 80 ° / 0 but takes under these conditions, the completion of the reaction long and is 18 to 27 hours.
When using hydrogen chloride in the gaseous state or a concentrated aqueous solution of the same, thus the times required to complete the reaction with equally good yields are of the same order of magnitude. However, it was possible to reduce the reaction time considerably while maintaining it good yields by being in the presence of certain catalysts such as alkyl mercaptans or mercapto-substituted carboxylic acids.
.However, the use of hydrochloric acid brings with it corrosion problems that are very difficult and for a technical application are extremely difficult to solve. A method using sulfuric acid in place of hydrochloric acid is therefore of great interest. .
In the publications describing the above-mentioned catalysts, no example of their use is given given in the case of condensation in the presence of sulfuric acid. Experiments now carried out have shown that these catalysts do not make it possible to achieve good yields with sulfuric acid obtain.
In the former case were obtained after 24 hours of reaction, the yield of methylenebis-chlororesorcinol at 60 ° / 0th In the latter case, the reaction had not yet ended after 24 hours and no information was given about the yield. Finally, 2-cyclohexyl-4-chlorophenol has already been condensed with 2,4,5-trichlorophenol and paraformaldehyde in a medium of glacial acetic acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. The yields obtained for 3-cyclohexyl-2,2'-dioxy-3 ', 5,5', 6'-tetrachlorodiphenylmethane were not reported. In none of the known processes was acetone used in place of formaldehyde. On the basis of the known processes, it was therefore not possible to foresee that the process according to the invention would lead to the condensation of phenol. mit Aceton in weniger als 4 Stunden mit ausgezeichneten Ausbeuten an Bis-(oxyphenyl)-propan bewerkstelligen kann.accomplish with acetone in less than 4 hours with excellent yields of bis (oxyphenyl) propane can.
It has now been found that acetone with phenol in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid with excellent yields and can condense in very short periods of time if concentrated Sulfuric acid diluted with about the same weight of glacial acetic acid and a mercaptoalkanesulfonic acid as a catalyst used, which has 2 or 3 carbon atoms.
The mercaptoalkanesulfonic acids used, co-mercaptoethanesulfonic acid or ω-mercaptopropanesulfonic acid, are according to methods known per se, for example by the action of sodium sulfhydrate on sodium chloroalkanesulfonate or by reaction of calcium xanthate with a sodium chloroalkanesulfonate and subsequent treatment with ammonia manufactured.
Es ist nicht erforderlich, die Mercaptoalkansulfonsäuren in Form der reinen Säuren zu verwenden, manIt is not necessary to use the mercaptoalkanesulfonic acids to use in the form of pure acids, man

..;..... Rather, their esters or their salts with various metals with the exception of those metals which provide insoluble sulfates, such as calcium, barium, lead and the like, which remain as impurities in the bis (oxyphenyl) propane and use make additional cleaning measures necessary. The amount of catalyst can vary between 0.1 and 5 weight percent based on the feed. An amount of 0.3 to 1 ° / 0 of the feed ensures a sufficient acceleration. ..; .....
The amount of concentrated sulfuric acid used for condensation can vary within certain limits. It is advantageous to use about 2 moles per mole of acetone used. The reaction is slower with smaller amounts. Larger amounts do not noticeably increase the yield. The acid concentration used should not be below 85 ° / 0 . Technical sulfuric acid with 66 ° Be (95 to 96%) is completely satisfactory.
Of the acetic acid used to dilute the sulfuric acid, the amount used is the amount by weight about the same as that of sulfuric acid. Glacial acetic acid is used, but it is not absolutely necessary that this is completely anhydrous. The acetic acid can be easily recovered after the completion of the reaction are, for example, by extraction with solvents, z. B. ordinary ether or ethyl acetate.
The molar ratio of phenol to acetone can vary from the theoretical ratio of 2: 1 to 8: 1 and more. In practice a ratio of 5 moles of phenol per mole of acetone gives good results. With the ratio 2: 1 is the yield calculated on acetone is lower. Ratios above 5: 1 increase the excess phenol to be recovered without gaining much in yield.
Die Reaktionstemperatur kann zwischen 0 und 5O0C variieren. Mit Vorteil arbeitet man zwischen 15 und 25° C.The reaction temperature can vary between 0 and 5O 0 C. It is advantageous to work between 15 and 25 ° C.
Since the condensation reaction is exothermic, the reaction components should not be mixed together all at once, but gradually at a rate that depends on the intensity of the cooling used in order to keep the temperature of the reaction medium within the desired limits. After the reaction components have been mixed, they are left in contact for a certain time in order to complete the condensation. The duration of introduction of the reactants may be from 15 minutes to 1 1 Za hours. The total reaction time does not exceed 2 to 4 hours.
:. ■· ' ■■After the condensation has ended, the bis (oxyphenyl) propane is isolated by means known per se and recovers the acetic acid and an excess of phenol. :. ■ · '■■
■ ,.■-■·This gives bis (oxyphenyl) propane of excellent quality in terms of color and melting point in good yields that exceed 85%, calculated on both converted phenol and acetone used. ■,. ■ - ■ ·
Die folgenden Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung. The following examples illustrate the invention.
(95,8%) zutropfen. Kirk-Othmer, Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Bd. 4, S. 248) einer 5%igen Lösung in Alkohol beträgt 0,3. Aus den Mutterlaugen extrahiert man mit Essigsäureäthylester 405 g eingesetztes Phenol und Essigsäure.315 g of glacial acetic acid are introduced into a stainless steel apparatus equipped with a stirrer. Then, while stirring: 300: g of sulfuric acid of 66 ° Be. (95.8%) are added dropwise. Mari is cooled to 15 0 C., and 3 g of powdered sodium-ß-inercaptoäthansulfonat to. A mixture of 705 g (7.5 mol) of phenol and 87 g (1.5 mol) of acetone is then allowed to flow in within half an hour, with stirring and cooling, the cooling being regulated so that a temperature of 15 to 17 0 C is maintained, after some time the bis (oxyphenyl) propane begins to crystallize, and the temperature rises to 21 to 23 ° C. After the flow has ended, which lasts about 1 1/2 hours, stirring is continued at 17 to 18 ° C. for a further 1 × / 2 hours to end the condensation. The viscous mass obtained in this way is poured into 4230 g of water. The bis (oxyphenyl) propane crystallizes with a certain amount of phenol. It is suctioned off at 3O 0 C and washed with 500 g of water of 3O 0 C. Then, to the suspension of bis (oxyphenyl) propane again in 2000 g of water, neutralize the remaining acidity with 10 g of sodium acetate and heated with stirring to 9O 0 C until bis (oxyphenyl) propane is liquefied. After cooling to 30 ° C. with stirring, the mixture is filtered off with suction and washed with water. The extracted bis (oxyphenyl) propane still contains a little phenol and is purified from the small amount of phenol it contains by steam distillation. After cooling, filtered off with suction and dried at 8O 0 C. are thus obtained 313 g of bis (oxyphenyl) propane in the form of white granules, mp = 151 to 154 ° C. The Lovibond color (see FIG. Kirk-Othmer, Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Vol. 4, p. 248) of a 5% solution in alcohol is 0.3. The product is phenol free and contains less than 0.02% ash. 405 g of phenol and acetic acid used are extracted from the mother liquors with ethyl acetate.
The yields are therefore 91.6% based on acetone and 86.1% based on converted phenol.
By recrystallizing from chlorobenzene, bis (oxyphenyl) propane can be obtained with a melting point of 155 to 157 ° C in 95.2% yield obtained.
The procedure is as described in Example 1, but with a molar ratio of phenol to acetone of 5: 1 and replacing the sodium mercaptoethanesulfonate with sodium βj-mercaptopropanesulfonate. The inflow of the mixture of phenol and acetone is carried out in half an hour at 15 0 C. The total reaction time is 1 ^ 1 hours. In this way, bis (oxyphenyl) propane with a melting point of 151 to 154 ° C. is obtained in a yield of 86.3%, based on acetone, and 87%, based on converted phenol.
If the sodium cu-mercaptopropane sulfonate is replaced by a mercaptan, such as, for example, ethyl mercaptan, the yields are only 73%, based on acetone, and 73%, based on converted phenol. With isopropyl mercaptan, yields of 52%, based on acetone, or 77 0 I 0 , based on phenol , are obtained.
:The procedure is as described in Example 1, using sodium mercaptoethanesulfonate as Catalyst, however, uses a quantitative ratio of phenol to acetone that corresponds to the theoretical ratio of 2: 1 equals one. :
This gives bis (oxyphenyl) propane with a melting point of 145 to 151 ° C. in a yield of 88.2%, based on converted phenol, but the yield, based on acetone, is only 60.5%.
■.If you get the sodium mercaptoethane sulfonate through already known catalytic converters replaced, the Yields to 27.9% for ethyl mercaptan, to 9.2% for α-mercaptopropionic acid and to zero for α-mercaptosuccinic acid. ■.
