Description
Carrier metal for directly or indirectly heated cathodes for electrical Discharge vessels Cathodes for discharge vessels generally fall into two classes divided into wire-shaped, directly heated hot cathodes and indirectly heated cathodes. The directly heated cathodes generally consist of one Wire covered with an electron-emitting material. The cathode is connected directly to the heating current. Indirectly heated cathodes exist in the generally made of a carrier metal that is bonded to an electron-emitting material is covered and which is heated by an additional filament. By both Types of cathodes are generally used in nickel alloys.
The carrier metal is used in the manufacture of indirectly heated cathodes first brought into the desired shape and then. with a layer of a mixture covered by barium and strontium carbonate. The cathode is due to high initial heating activated so that the carbonates break down into oxides; the then reduced temperature brings the electron emission to the desired values.
In the manufacture and operation of indirectly heated cathodes always occurs the problem that the oxide layer has a tendency to separate from the nickel core to separate. This separation of the layer from the metallic core also occurs directly heated cathodes that use a nickel thread with an oxide is covered.
It is believed that after activation, the cathode structure consists of several layers, namely 1. from the carrier metal, 2. from an intermediate layer, 3. from the oxide covering and 4. from a monomolecular layer of barium and Strontium on the surface.
It can be assumed that the separation of the oxide layer from the carrier metal, which consists of peeling or peeling off by a change in nature the intermediate layer is created, which is the bond between the Oxydbedecküng and destroyed the core. Presumably this will cause the change in the intermediate layer causes the coefficients of expansion of the cover layer and of the core to be substantial are different.
It has been recognized that the composition of the nickel alloy is essential determined the degree of cathode peeling, and it was believed that this peeling either a small amount of cobalt added or the presence of too much manganese or silicon in the alloy.
In the previously known cathodes, the contamination of the nickel alloy was but always more than 0.6% of substances other than manganese. On this level of impurities in connection with manganese it is probably due to the fact that so far a larger one Amount of manganese was blamed for the peeling of the oxide layer.
In the case of a carrier metal for directly or indirectly heated cathodes for electrical discharge vessels, which consists of a nickel alloy according to the invention the alloy --not less than 98% nickel, between 0; 2 to 2% manganese and impurities not exceeding 0.25%.
With this alloy composition occurred despite the relatively large Surprisingly, manganese does not flake on, and the oxide layer held indefinitely on the core metal without affecting the electronic characteristics the cathode were changed. Comparative tests even showed that the electronic Characteristics of these cathodes better or at least the same as those of earlier ones Cathodes were.
It has been found that an optimum when using approximately 1% Manganese lies. No significant benefits were found when the alloy was less contains than 0.2% manganese. Using more than 2% manganese is from an emissions standpoint from harmful.
The addition of manganese to nickel has previously been a cause for concern in cathodes held because it was believed to interfere with the electronic properties. Man has therefore always limited the addition of manganese to a minimum. Through the carrier net after of the invention not only holds the oxide layer indefinitely, but it also became one higher emissions than the previous cathodes. It was also found that with these cathodes the emission is more stable during the entire operating period showed than with the known cathodes.
In addition, experiments showed that through the use of the carrier metal the same or even a lower grating emission occurs than before. The grid emission is created by the barium that evaporates from the monomolecular layer of the cathode and is reflected on the lattice threads. This one knocked down on the grate Barium layer causes undesired lattice emission. -Cathode alloys are-classified into "active," "normal," or "passive," depending on the degree, with the reducing Components in the base metal react with the oxide layer. Fast activity is desirable from a commercial standpoint, however the level of activity must be can be controlled in such a way that the desired uniformity of electron emission sustains, with a long service life and without lattice emission: silicon is considered a reducing Means is known and is a means of changing emission activity. Will be in that Carrier metal according to the invention only uses a small proportion of silicon, namely Less than 0.02%, this alloy would normally be called a "passive" nickel alloy must be designated. However, this alloy behaves similarly to an alloy with higher silicon content in terms of emission activity and is comparable with the alloy formerly known as "normal". A high silicon content results also a high transverse resistance in the layer between the metal core and the oxide coating, so high resistance losses. Although the cathode has rapid emission activity as has one with a relatively higher proportion of silicon, there is no change in the To recognize cross resistance.
