Description
Process for the production of grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile Copolymers The invention relates to an improved method of manufacture of styrene-acrylonitrile graft polymers of polybutadiene, which improved Have properties in terms of their heat processing properties.
It is known that styrene and acrylonitrile on a butadiene containing polymeric product can be graft polymerized and so tough solid materials can be obtained. For example, according to British patent specification 649166, a thermoplastic Styrene-acrylonitrile graft polymer can be produced by adding monomeric styrene and acrylonitrile are polymerized onto a butadiene-styrene copolymer. As most thermoplastic products have physical properties these graft polymers are strongly dependent on the temperature. You are at room temperature hard and not elastic, they become softer as the temperature increases and more flexible and, conversely, harder and more brittle when the temperature is lowered. At very low temperatures, such as below - 20 ° C, they become very brittle and have a low impact strength.
Dieses Harz hat eine Sprödigkeitstemperatur von unter - 20° C und einen Steifheitsmodul von wenigstens 3500kg/cm2 bei 30° C.British Patent 744 455 proposes a copolymer from butadiene, styrene and acrylonitrile by adding monomeric butadiene as practically the only monomer in the presence of a polymerization catalyst at a temperature below 60P C is polymerized. The polymer has a specific Viscosity of at least 0.3. A mixture is added to the polymer formed in this way of styrene and acrylonitrile are added and the resulting mixture becomes a thermoplastic Polymerized resin, which consists of 23 to 41 percent by weight butadiene, 10 to 30 percent by weight Acrylonitrile and 29 to 67 percent by weight styrene. This resin has a brittleness temperature below - 20 ° C and a stiffness modulus of at least 3500kg / cm2 at 30 ° C.
However, difficulties arose due to toughness and strength on these known styrene-acrylonitrile graft polymers of polybutadiene to process elevated temperatures. A kneading, mastication and calendering of such Products in the hot state can only be carried out with difficulty and over a long period of time will. Such processing requires high mixing temperatures on the roller, and only after a very long period of mastication does it become soft, workable and plastic Get foil.
The process according to the invention for the production of styrene-acrylonitrile graft polymers of polybutadiene is characterized in that an aqueous latex mixture consists of a latex containing essentially polymerized butadiene and a latex, which is a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer consisting mainly of styrene contains, is produced, monomeric styrene and acrylonitrile are admixed and the mixture obtained in the presence of a free radical polymerization catalyst is heated to obtain a thermoplastic polymeric material.
The method of manufacturing the polybutadiene latex used as the starting material is not very crucial. For the graft polymerization according to the invention it can be used in the form of an aqueous latex. Preferably the polybutadiene latex produced by polymerizing butadiene as practically the only monomer and a polybutadiene having a relatively high molecular weight is obtained, z. B. one that has a Mooney Viscosity Number of at least 80 (Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Vol. 6, pp. 147 to 151, 1934). Excellent results are obtained when the polymerization of butadiene in the presence of a polymerization catalyst is carried out at a temperature below about 60 ° C.
The latex of the preformed styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, which is mixed with the polybutadiene latex before the graft polymerization is a Copolymer consisting mainly of styrene. The preferred composition this copolymer is 65 to 75 weight percent styrene and 25 to 35 weight percent acrylonitrile.
About the desired mixability on the roller in the grafted polybutadiene To ensure that the preformed styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer should be in Form of a latex with the polybutadiene latex, preferably in an amount of 1/2 up to 11/2 parts by weight per part Po: lybutadiene, can be mixed.
The graft polymerization is preferably carried out by adding styrene and acrylonitrile for mixing the latexes of polybutadiene and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer are added and the entire mixture is heated to the polymerization temperature will. Potassium persulfate, ammonium persulfate or hydrogen peroxide are preferred used as catalysts, in an amount of 1 to 2 percent by weight, based on the total amount of monomers present.
Styrene and acrylonitrile can be used in amounts of 1 to 3 parts by weight of total monomers per part of polybutadiene be present, the ratio of Styrene to acrylonitrile is preferably 2 to 3 parts of styrene per part of acrylonitrile.
The polymerization is carried out at temperatures between 30 and 90 ° C, preferably about 80 ° C, under an inert atmosphere, e.g. B. nitrogen performed. the The reaction can be carried out up to 100% conversion of the styrene and acrylonitrile will. However, if the conversion is not complete, the unconverted Monomers are recovered by steam distillation.
The latex can optionally be made from a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer and the styrene and acrylonitrile are added in their entirety to the polybutadiene latex whereupon the mixture is heated to the polymerization temperature and the catalyst is admitted. It can also be polybutadiene, the latex made from the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer and the catalyst is heated to the polymerization temperature and the styrene and Acrylonitrile was slowly added to the reaction mixture either as a mixture or separately will.
The polybutadiene graft polymer can in a known manner by coagulation the emulsion can be obtained by adding an acidified aqueous salt solution. : To enable a comparison of these products. can their composition in Resin to rubber ratios are expressed with the resin component is represented by the amount of styrene and acrylonitrile that are on the polybutadiene is grafted plus the amount of free styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer in the mix. The rubber component is determined by the amount of originally used Polybutadiene shown. The preferred mixtures of the polybutadiene graft polymer are those having a resin to rubber ratio of 65:35 to 75:25 parts by weight own. Such mixtures have good solvent resistance, e.g. B. against Gasoline, lubricating oil, or carbon tetrachloride. They also have good mechanical ones Properties, especially a good combination of hardness and impact resistance low temperatures.
Neither the distribution nor the length of the grafted onto the polybutadiene Chains can currently be determined analytically precisely. However, the extent can vary Grafting can be approximated by the following experiment: There are pills or granules of the reaction product obtained according to the invention in dimethylformamide, a known solvent for copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, immersed. The polybutadiene and the polybutadiene graft polymer can swell, but are insoluble in this solvent. There are 100 g of the reaction product in about 400 to 1000 cc of dimethylformamide for 24 to 48 hours at room temperature dispersed to all of the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer from the reaction product to detach. Usually two to five consecutive extractions are used Fresh solvent with each extraction is sufficient to remove the insoluble components bring the reaction product to a constant dry weight. The distance the solvent can be done by mixing the mixture at 30 to 50 ° C and a Vacuum of 10 to 15 mm Hg is maintained. The weight of the finally isolated The product gives less the weight of the polybutadiene in the original sample Weight of styrene and acrylonitrile grafted onto the polybutadiene Has. The value obtained in this way is used to determine the extent of @ grafting (degree of grafting) determined as the weight of the grafted styrene and acrylonitrile per 100 parts by weight of the original polybutadiene.

Example 3 365 parts of 120 parts of polybutadiene and 3 parts of potassium oleate aqueous latex containing 258 parts of a 60 parts a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile (75 percent by weight styrene, 25 weight percent acrylonitrile) containing aqueous latex mixed. To this 700 parts of water and 182 parts of styrene and 78 parts of acrylonitrile were added to the mixture. The mixture was heated to 80 to 90 ° C. with stirring and 2.1 parts of potassium persulfate added. The refluxing was continued for 2 hours at this temperature. The reaction product was cooled and the solids by coagulation, such as described in Example 1, obtained. The total yield of polymer solids was 412 parts with a degree of grafting of 55.8. The composition of the solids was 42 percent by weight of graft polybutadiene and 58 percent by weight of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer with a resin to rubber ratio of 71:29. The material was at 170 ° C within pulled out from 8 minutes to a soft film. The physical properties of the resin are given in the table.
Pf ropfpolymerisaten oben beschriebener Beispiele, deren Eigenschaften in
The rapid processing ability of the grafted according to the invention Polybutadiene in the heat is made by the given kneading times of 5, 6 and 8 Minutes (example 1 to 3 or table). On the other hand, at least 18 to 22 minutes kneading time under the same conditions for the grafted Polvbutadiene according to British Patent 7-14,455. d ie an equal resin to rubber ratio by 70:30, needed to have a soft.
