Description
Process for the production of boron-containing inorganic oxide gels Diborane hydrolyzes in the presence of free water with the formation of hydrogen and a boric acid, the degree of hydration of which depends on the quantitative ratio of water to diborane. This hydrolysis of the diborane can be represented by the following three equations: It has been found that the adsorbed water of oxide gels, e.g. B. silica gel, undergoes hydrolysis with diborane in the manner indicated above and that the gels can be modified with the aid of this reaction by introducing boron. If an oxide gel, such as silica gel, which contains adsorbed water, is treated according to the invention with diborane, adsorbed water reacts with the diborane to form a boric acid within the gel mass. As a result of this hydrolysis reaction, modified oxides or gels are formed which contain a boric acid in an intimate mixture with the gel particles and as a deposit on the surfaces of the gel particles.
The process according to the invention for producing modified oxide gels consists of a gel containing adsorbed water with diborane implements. This procedure can be used to produce gels containing adsorbed water react with such an amount of diborane under such conditions that the diborane only with a small amount of the adsorbed and bound form in the gel contained water reacts, or you can use the diborane in sufficient quantity and let it act under such conditions that it coincides with the greater part of the in adsorbed and bound water contained in the gel to form a boric acid and replacement of hydroxyl hydrogen atoms of the original gel structure with B (OH) 2 residues reacts. In making these new products one can look out some of the adsorbed water through the gels before the action of the diborane Heat or otherwise expel them so that they get the desired amount of water for the subsequent reaction with the diborane, and in this way has It is in your hand how much boron is in the gel when the hydrolysis reaction is completed is introduced. You can also use the products modified with diborane Modify heating to a temperature in the range of 500 to 10000 C further, whereby a dehydration he follows, depending on the temperature and Heating duration either only depends on the removal of the water from the through implementation boric acid formed between the adsorbed water and the diborane or on the Removal of water from this boric acid and from it by the hydrolysis reaction modified gel structure created between diborane and the bound water of the gel extends. At 100 "C and slightly higher temperatures only dehydration takes place instead of boric acid. Temperatures within about the upper half of the stated Dehydration of not only boric acid, but also the area cause dehydration modified gel structure by splitting off hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl groups from the modified gel structure in the form of water.
The products according to the invention are modified oxide gels made from a mixture of boric acid including boric anhydride or boron oxide and one Oxydgel, with the boron mainly on the surface of the gel.
The modified oxides of the invention can be selected from many produce different gels, the adsorbed and also chemically bound Contain water, which is present in the form of hydroxyl groups, one of which is different most of it is on the surface of the gel. In this way you can synthetic silica, aluminum oxide and magnesium oxide gels according to the invention or modify gels made from any combination of these substances are e.g. B. silica-alumina, alumina-magnesia or silica-alumina-magnesia gels, as well as natural earths. The modified oxides or gels of the invention are suitable for a variety of purposes. You can e.g. B. for the adsorption of Gases, liquids and solids from different mixtures are used, and they can be used with particular advantage as catalysts and / or catalyst supports, z. B. in the treatment or synthesis of petroleum products or hydrocarbons, be used. The arrival Use as adsorbents, catalysts and / or catalyst carrier karin ~ ín take place in the same way in which one works with unmodified gels.
The widespread use of many types of synthetic gels as Catalysts and / or catalyst carriers in the petroleum industry offer a wide range Field of use for the modified gels according to the invention.
The method can be applied to gels of any grain size. The ~ crowd the aXorbed and bound water of a gel depends on the type of Production of the original: gel and the pretreatment process that the % it was subjected to before exposure to diborane.
The amount of in the to be modified by reaction with diborane GeI-divided water can be regulated as required. The content of adsorbed Water can be reduced by treating the gel in a suitable manner, e.g. B. by heating, evacuating, drying with P2 O5 or a combination of these types of treatment. To reduce the content of adsorbed water, you can briefly at temperatures from 100 to 150 "C; however, temperatures below Eãlb 100" C are usually sufficient to effectively remove some of the adsorbed water. Temperatures above 150 "C are not used in the process according to the invention because they already lead to the abortion of part of the bound water of the gel. The, Heating times vary widely depending on the temperature used and the amount of adsorbed water to be driven off, but should be at temperatures from 100 to 1500C are less than 10 minutes so that not all of the adsorbed Water is driven out. By suitable regulation of the conditions under which The abortion of the water is carried out, the water content of the with Adjust the gels to be converted to the diborane to any desired value. this is a the possibilities for regulating the boron content in the end product.
After pretreatment to adjust the water content of the gel gaseous diborane is allowed to act on the gel containing adsorbed water. Since diborane is extremely reactive with air or water, all work has to be done with this substance in a high vacuum system or at least in the absence of air and free water vapor. If you work in a high vacuum, it should Gel to a low temperature, e.g. B. in a dry ice bath (-800C), be cooled, to prevent the loss of adsorbed water from the gel when evacuating the ~ air. If the diborane is allowed to act on the gel without applying negative pressure, it can you can work at higher temperatures up to 50 "C.
The length of time required to produce the products of the invention the action of diborane on the gel can range from a short period of time can vary significantly from less than an hour to several hours or more and depends on the quantity ratio of diborane to gel, the intended one Degree of hydrolysis reaction, the way in which the diborane will act on the gel lets, and the working temperature.
Arbeitet man z. Do you work z. B. with an excess of diborane over that in the gel Amount of water contained at room temperature with circulation of the gas through the mass of gel particles, the hydrolysis proceeds relatively quickly. However, if the amount of water contained in the gel is in excess over the angel applied amount of diborane and one works through without circulating the gas the mass of gel particles in a high vacuum with cooling of the gel mass, z. B. by a Dry ice bath (-80 "C) to avoid loss of adsorbed water from the gel when To prevent evacuation, the hydrolysis is relatively slow.
The diborane reacts with the adsorbed water of the gel to form of boric acid according to the above equations (1), (2) and (3). As evidenced by these three Equations, the ratio of the evolved hydrogen to that is Diborane consumed 6: 1 regardless of the respective end product.
The hydroxyl groups of the bound water of the gel hydrolyze some of the borine (bs3) formed by dissociation of the diborane. This partial hydrolysis between hydroxyl groups of the bound water and diborane results in a relationship of evolved hydrogen to consumed diborane of about 2: 1 or slightly higher. The hydrolysis of the partially hydrolyzed borine groups (B H2) becomes likely immediately completed by the adsorbed water with the development of further hydrogen, thus the ratio of total hydrogen evolved to that consumed Diborane rises to 6: 1.
The following examples serve to further illustrate the invention.
Example 1 When diborane acts on adsorbed water containing silica gel at -80.degree. C. was the ratio of evolved hydrogen to consumed diborane 4: 1. This is the same ratio that is obtained when diborane is allowed to act on ice at 800.degree. When the temperature rises to - 230C or more, the ratio increased through further evolution of hydrogen to 6: 1. This value corresponds to the complete hydrolysis of the diborane.
Example 2 When diborane acts on adsorbed water containing silica gel at room temperature immediately evolved hydrogen in a ratio of 6: 1, based on the diborane consumed.
The ratio of developed obtained in Examples 1 and 2 Hydrogen to consumed diborane could not have been 6: 1 if after the Implementation with the hydroxyl groups of the bound water of the gel is still a noteworthy one Amount of borine groups would be left in partially hydrolyzed form. the Hydrolysis of any existing, from the implementation of the hydroxyl groups of the bound Water with the diborane originating, partially hydrolyzed borine groups must can therefore be completed by the adsorbed water of the gel.
Example 3 About 0.5 g of silica with a content of about 200 / o Water (about 150% adsorbed and 5010 bound water) was poured into a glass vessel entered and cooled in a dry ice bath to -800 C, whereupon the air out of the The vessel was evacuated. The cooling bath prevented the loss of water that would otherwise occur with Pumping the air would have occurred. Then, with further cooling to -800C 9.27 10-9 g-moles of diborane were introduced into the reaction vessel. After about an hour all gases were pumped off and it was found that 6.54 was 10-4 g-moles of diborane were recovered and 1.19 10-3 g-moles of hydrogen had been evolved.
When the silica was heated to room temperature it developed another 3.57 10-4 g-moles of hydrogen, so that the total amount of hydrogen 1.55 was 10-3 g-moles. Because the difference between the originally in the reaction vessel introduced and the recovered amount of diborane 2.73 10- g-moles was the total ratio of hydrogen evolved to hydrogen consumed Diborane 5.7: 1. In view of the small amounts of material, this value is good Agreement with the value 6: 1, that of a complete hydrolysis of the diborane is equivalent to.
The one hour reaction time of the diborane with which the adsorbed Silica containing water is not of particular importance in this case Attempt no recirculation of the gases took place and the hydrolysis rate of diborane was therefore relatively low. Under the conditions selected here only part of the water content of the silica was reacted with the diborane. With a longer reaction time, with circulation of the gas through the mass of Silica particles or when working at higher temperatures, especially without High vacuum, a larger proportion of the water content could have been implemented.
If you have a gel modified with diborane, which originally adsorbs it contains water, after the purpose of converting the entire water content or only part of it, the diborane acted on a temperature heated in the range of about 100 to 1000 ° C or more (the upper part of this Temperature range corresponds to the temperatures at which gels usually calcine are), the gels modified according to the invention with diborane suffer another Modification to a dehydrated form by elimination of water. Depending on the The temperature and the heating time cause dehydration boric acid formed with the adsorbed water and the diborane, or dehydration this boric acid and that caused by the hydrolysis reaction between diborane and the hydroxyl groups of the bound gel water formed modified gel structure instead.
When heated above 100 "C, orthoboric acid (H, BO,) gradually loses Water and converts to metaboric acid (HBO2). At about 140 "C another takes place Water is lost with the formation of tetraboric acid (H2B4O7).
If you continue to heat at the last-mentioned temperature, this becomes Whole water is driven off, and boric anhydride or boron oxide (B2 02) is formed.
In the case of those mentioned above, necessary for the dehydration of boric acid There is practically no minimum temperature dehydration of the modified gel structure instead of. However, one occurs in approximately the upper half of this temperature range Dehydration of both the boric acid and the modified gel structure through Elimination of hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl groups from the modified gel structure in the form of water. With prolonged heating in the range of 100 to 1000 "C, it becomes natural the unreacted adsorbed water is driven off the gel modified with diborane.
Erhitzt man z. If you heat z. B. the product of Example 3 to a temperature in the range of about 100 to 1000 "C, so can one in the course of half an hour Achieve dehydration. At temperatures in the lower part of this range, Unreacted adsorbed water is removed and the boric acid is dehydrated. At temperatures in the upper part of this range, unreacted material is adsorbed Water is removed, the boric acid is dehydrated to boron oxide, and hydrogen atoms are formed and hydroxyl groups of the modified gel structure are split off in the form of water. The heating time can be significant depending on the degree of dehydration desired vary.
Among those leading to dehydration of the modified gel structure Conditions, some of the boron can be converted into a form of boron oxide, in which the boron atom remains bound to the oxygen of the gel, e.g. B. O = -0 - Si -. One Networking can be between several molecules as well as within a molecule of the gel by the formation of boron-oxygen-boron bonds and boron-oxygen-silicon bonds occur, depending on the way in which the water molecule in question forms. aside from that can also be achieved by heating to these relatively high temperatures the B (OH) 2 groups are split off from the gel molecule and form free boron oxide. When heating the gel modified with diborane to such high temperatures Other changes to the gel may be made to cause dehydration.
The method according to the invention and the products obtained thereafter have been made without reference to many of the possible preceding or following Modifications of the gels either by physical treatment or by treatment described with other substances. Since the invention is based on the implementation between diborane and the water of a gel containing adsorbed water can attach itself to the modification according to the invention is a further modification of the process products connect by physical treatment or treatment with other substances, or the gels can first be modified in a way other than none complete removal of the adsorbed water has the consequence, so that here the treatment with diborane according to the invention can follow.
PATENTANSPROCHE: 1. PATENT CLAIM: 1.
