Abstract
Description
The invention relates to methods for the production of silicon carbide from mineral raw materials.
Pure silicon carbide is obtained through Pyrolysis of alkylsifanes or halosilanes, the technical product by heating a mixture of quartz sand and coke in electric ovens approx. 2500 ° C. It is used as an abrasive and polishing agent, e.g. as carborundum (approx. 35 %), as hard material, deoxidizing and alloying agent in metallurgy (approx. 45%) and for Ceramic applications (20%) used. Special application takes place Silicon carbide in heating elements (Infrared heater), high-temperature transistors and surge arresters. Silicon carbide produced by epitaxy is suitable for semiconductors and as a material for light emitting diodes (blue LED) (see Römpp, Chemistry Lexicon, Volume 5 (1992), 4165, under "Silicon Carbide"). Due to the high synthesis temperatures the process from quartz sand and coke is expensive at approx. 2500 ° C. Also receives one sintered as a product, very coarse-grained blocks of silicon carbide, the must be ground for further processing. Due to the great hardness of Silicon carbide is time-consuming and also costly.
In the course of investigations into the synthesis of silicon carbide, the applicant found for the first time that silicon carbide can also be produced from silicate minerals other than SiO 2 (quartz), such as, for example, from basic and ultra-basic rocks. The invention therefore relates in a first aspect to the production of silicon carbide from a silicon dioxide component and graphite, minerals with an SiO 2 content of <70% by weight, preferably of ≤ 65% by weight, being used as the SiO 2 component. %, particularly preferably with a content of 30-70% by weight and most preferably with a content of 35-65% by weight. Basic or ultra-basic rocks are preferably used, such as, in particular, basalts, gabbros, norites, troctolites, peridotites, pyroxenites and their weathering products. Particularly preferred examples of suitable minerals are olivine, pyroxene, serpentine and talc. It is further preferred that the minerals used for the production of silicon carbide have an MgO content of at least 25% by weight, preferably of at least 30% by weight. The sum of the SiO 2 and MgO content is preferably at least 80% by weight, particularly preferably at least 85% by weight and most preferably at least 90% by weight.
The heating is preferably carried out in a reducing gas atmosphere, particularly preferably in an atmosphere from argon and hydrogen, e.g. from an atmosphere with 90–70 vol .-% and in particular 90% by volume of argon, and with 30-10% by volume and in particular 10 vol% hydrogen. The heating time is preferably 40-80 hours and especially 60 hours. The molar ratio of rock or mineral (based on the Si component and the other metal components) to graphite is preferably 1: 1.5 to 1: 5, particularly preferably 1: 2-1: 4, e.g. 1: 2.5. Any excess carbon present in the product can be burned out e.g. through four hours glow at approx. 750 ° C.
The process temperature is preferably in the range of 1100–1500 ° C, especially preferably from 1150-1350 ° C and most preferably at about 1250 ° C.
In the course of further investigations into the synthesis of silicon carbide powders using mineral raw materials, a powder made of diatoms was mixed with graphite. Diatoms are the skeletons of diatoms. The skeletons consist of amorphous SiO 2 and contain small amounts of impurities of Fe 2 O 3 (approx. 1% by weight) and carbon (approx. 1% by weight). Surprisingly, silicon carbide could be produced in high yield from diatomaceous earth and graphite. In addition to diatomaceous earth, industrially produced amorphous SiO 2 can also be used.
A second aspect of the invention is thus the production of silicon carbide from silicon dioxide and graphite by heating, using amorphous SiO 2 , for example diatomaceous earth or industrial amorphous SiO 2 , as the SiO 2 component.
The two components are preferred in a molar ratio (amorphous Si: C) of ≤ 1: 2, particularly preferably from 1: 2.5 to 1: 6. Before heating the samples are preferably ground, preferably in a Ball mill homogenized. Excess carbon in the product e.g. burned out by annealing for four hours at approx. 750 ° C become.
As a reducing atmosphere preferably one made of argon and hydrogen, in particular one with 90-70 % By volume, in particular 90% by volume of argon, and 30-10% by volume, in particular 10 Vol.% Hydrogen.
The heating is preferably carried out at a temperature of 1150 to 1300 ° C, and especially at approx. 1250 ° C, and during over a period of 40-80 Hours, especially 60 hours.
A third aspect of the invention is the production of silicon carbide from aluminum-containing silicates. Surprisingly, it was found that with a molar ratio of mineral (based on the Si component and the other metal components) to graphite of ≤ 1:10, for example 1:11 to 1:15, a mixture of SiC and Al 2 O 3 can be produced at relatively low heating temperatures.
An object according to the third aspect of the present invention is therefore the production of a mixture of silicon carbide and Al 2 O 3 from graphite and mineral raw materials, aluminum-containing silicates being used as the mineral raw materials.
Natural alkali feldspar (KAlSi 3 O 8 ), kaolin (Al 2 Si 4 (OH) 2 ) and sillimanite (Al 2 SiO 5 ) and / or synthetic mullite (Al 6 Si 2 O 1 3 ) are preferably used as aluminum-containing silicates.
The aluminum-containing powder Silicates are preferably cold-isostatically pressed into rods. The heating is usually carried out in a reducing gas atmosphere and preferably in an atmosphere from argon and hydrogen; this atmosphere consists in particular of 90-70 Vol .-%, primarily 90 vol .-% argon, and 30-10 vol .-%, primarily 10 vol .-% Hydrogen. The framework of the glow temperature is usually 1150–1300 ° C and especially at approx. 1250 ° C. The glow time is preferably 20-60 Hours and especially 24-48 Hours.

A determination of the grain size distribution of the products showed ad 50 value of approx. 13 μm and a grain size distribution of 0.1–100 μm.
When reducing the synthesis temperature to 1000 ° C or a use of a pure argon atmosphere could not silicon carbide can be found in the samples.
- 1. The use of basic or ultra-basic rocks (collective term for rocks with an SiO 2 content of ≤ approx. 70% by weight, eg basalts) compared to high-purity quartz sand. In contrast to high-purity quartz sands, basic rocks are found in very large quantities worldwide.
- 2. Significantly reduced synthesis temperature (1250 ° C) compared to the conventional synthesis of SiC at temperatures of approx. 2500 ° C.
- 3. The product consists of a powder with grain sizes of approx. 0.1-100 μm and can be used as required without further grinding steps.
In order to obtain the highest possible volume fraction of SiC in the product, the rock should have the highest possible levels of SiO 2 and MgO compared to low levels of, for example, Fe 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 .
Beispiel 2: Herstellung von SiC aus amorphem SiO2 und CExample 2: Production of SiC from amorphous SiO 2 and C.
By mixing powder of SiO 2 with graphite in a molar ratio of about 1: 3 at a temperature of 1250 ° C in an atmosphere of 90 vol .-% Ar and 10 vol .-% H 2 silicon carbide powder. The powder produced in this way consists of approximately 75% by volume of SiC in addition to approximately 25% by volume of Fe 3 Si. The product is powdery with an average grain size of approx. 10 μm.
When using industrially produced amorphous SiO 2 , the proportion of impurities such as Fe 3 Si and Al 4 SiC 4 is significantly lower.
Beispiel 3: Herstellung von SiC/Al2O3 aus Alkalifeldspat und CExample 3: Production of SiC / Al 2 O 3 from alkali feldspar and C.
Die Glühatmosphäre bestand aus 90 % Argon und 10 % Wasserstoff und die Glühzeit betrug 24–48 StundenExperiments were carried out with powder made from natural alkali feldspar (KAlSi 3 O 8 ). The powders were mixed with graphite under different molar ratios (mineral: graphite = 1: 1 - 1:11) and cold-isostatically pressed into rods. The annealing temperature was 1250 ° C for all experiments. The annealing atmosphere consisted of 90% argon and 10% hydrogen and the annealing time was 24-48 hours
SiC:Al2O3 = 2:1)
umgewandelt hat. Aufgrund des Überschusses
an Grafit enthält
With a mixing ratio of Mineral: graphite from> 1:10, e.g. 1: 3, the reaction could not be observed and the sample was largely melted. At temperatures below approx. 1150 ° C the sample independently of the graphite content largely from the starting material.
Beispiel 4: Herstellung von SiClAl2O3 aus Mullit und CExample 4: Preparation of SiClAl 2 O 3 from Mullite and C
vermengt. Nach einer 24stündigen
Glühung
enthält
die Probe neben SiC und Al2O3 noch
große
Anteile an Mullit. Nach einer 48stündigen Glühung unterhalb von 1320 °C (1250 °C) enthält die Probe
nur noch SiC und Al2O3 in
einem Volumenverhältnis
von SiC:Al2O3 =
Contrary to the statements of Amroune & Fantozzi (see above), the experiments carried out show that SiC and Al 2 O 3 can be generated from Al-containing silicates at a temperature below 1320 ° C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
- 1. Using Al-containing silicates, in particular feldspars, aluminum silicates of the type Al 2 SiO 5 , mica, Al-containing layered silicates, mullite and clay minerals, mixtures of SiC and Al 2 O 3 can be produced with different mixing ratios.
- 2. The annealing temperature can be lower than 1320 ° C, the annealing atmosphere should not be oxidizing and annealing times of a few hours appear necessary.
