Description
The invention relates to a method for producing lithium-ion battery cells according to the preamble of claim 1 and a process arrangement for carrying out such a method according to
When producing lithium-ion battery cells, in particular battery pouch cells, the first charging/discharging processes of the battery cell are carried out in a formation process. For this purpose, the battery cells are led into a formation station and connected to a charging circuit via contact pins. During formation (i.e. during the charging process), lithium ions are deposited in the graphite structures of the anode of the respective battery cell. This forms the solid electrolyte interface (SEI), which represents a boundary layer between the electrolyte and the anode. In the formation process, the battery cell in the formation station is subjected to a compressive force by means of at least one pressure plate and then charged at a constant temperature and a relatively low charging speed. During the initial charging process, the cell expands. The pressure plate ensures even compression of the pouch cell.
If the pressure force exerted by the pressure plate is not high enough, the cell swelling will be uneven. The active material, which has experienced increased swelling, loses contact with the conductive carbon. This ultimately leads to a loss of electrical conductivity. This results in a higher internal resistance and an uneven charging of the cell.
An SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interphase) is formed during the initial charging process. This also leads to gas development. The gas is directed into a gas pocket in the pouch cell. If the pressure force exerted by the pressure plate is excessive, gas will be trapped between the electrode and the separator. This gas puts the electrolyte under pressure and causes the separator pores to enlarge. As the separator pores enlarge, conductive carbon can move between the anode and cathode and form a conduction bridge.
The electrons move through this conduction bridge and cause the cell to self-discharge.
Gas inclusions and cell swelling can cause an asymmetrical reaction force on the pressure plate. This leads to elastic deformation, tilting or inclination of the pressure plate. In this case, the pressure plate is no longer able to exert uniform pressure on the pouch cell. This means that the pressure plate must be rigid to prevent deformation and to apply the prescribed pressure to the surface of the cell housing. In the current state of the art, it is therefore not possible to guarantee consistent pressurization of the battery cell in the long term, which is why each pressure plate must be regularly checked and calibrated with a load sensor. This increases the process time.
In summary, it can be said that the initial charging process in the prior art has the following disadvantages: A pressure force that is set too low leads to uneven swelling and an increase in the internal resistance. Excessive pressure force will cause coating spikes to penetrate the separator and enlarge the pores. This can lead to a short circuit or a wire bridge and thus to a voltage drop. Excessive pressure can also lead to gas entrapment, which enlarges the pores. This can cause a wire bridge to form, causing a voltage drop. The pressure plate can be deformed due to the trapped gas volume, resulting in uneven pressurization of the cell housing. The pressure plate must therefore be checked regularly for flatness and parallelism. Normally, gas is developed at the beginning of the charging process. Gas development is maximum up to a battery charge of around 10%. Afterwards the gas production decreases and there is only swelling. The two different phenomena (gas evolution and cell swelling) occur during the first charge at different charging voltages. Only a reduced pressure force acting on the battery cell is required for gas evolution, while a large pressure force is required for cell swelling. However, in the prior art, the current operating mechanism of the pressure plate and the electric motor cannot adapt the pressure force to these two phenomena. This leads to a loss of quality during formation.
The following solutions are known to increase the effectiveness of the first charge: The cell is charged at a lower current rate, lower than the C value of 0.3. A relaxation time of about two minutes between phase 1 (i.e. gas evolution) and phase 2 (i.e. cell swelling). This allows the trapped gas to pass into the gas pocket. In addition, the process temperature can be increased to 50°C to accelerate the charging process and SEI development. However, the relaxation time between

The object of the invention is to provide a method and a process arrangement for the production of lithium-ion battery cells, in which the formation process can be carried out more reliably and in a shorter process time compared to the prior art.
The task is solved by the features of
The invention is based on a formation process in the production of lithium-ion battery cells. In the formation process, at least one battery cell is subjected to a first charging process in which lithium ions are deposited in the graphite structures of the anode of the battery cell, forming a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and gas formation. During the formation process, the battery cell is subjected to a compressive force in a formation station by means of at least one pressure element. According to the characterizing part of claim 1, the pressure element is a piezoelectric element or a piezoelectric element. The piezo element can be integrated into a control loop, together with at least one force sensor that detects the actual pressure force exerted on the battery cell. In addition, an electronic control unit is integrated into the control circuit, which controls the piezo element based on the recorded actual pressure force and a setpoint.
According to the invention, the compressive force acting on the battery cells during formation can be divided into a particularly constant basic compressive force and a varying additional compressive force which is superimposed on the constant basic compressive force. The additional pressure force can be generated with the help of the piezo element.
The pressure plates with the battery cells in between can move independently of each other. As soon as they are in contact with the corresponding cells, a minimum constant compressive force (hereinafter also referred to as basic compressive force) is applied by a spindle drive. The spindle drive is designed in such a way that the pressure plates press on the cells until a constant pressure force is exerted on the respective cell. The spindle drive is then deactivated. The spindle drive is operated until all pressure plates exert a constant basic pressure force on the battery cells. The additional pressure force is generated by the piezo element. The total pressure force acting on the battery cells is varied by controlling the piezo element. In particular, the total pressure force is varied between phase 1 (gas evolution, low pressure force required) and phase 2 (cell swelling, large pressure force required). The piezo element is controlled by an electronic control unit that applies an electrical voltage with a predetermined frequency to the piezo element. Different types of vibration loads are conceivable. The mean value of the vibration load can be zero or set to a certain minimum compressive force. This means that it is possible to completely relax the cell for short milliseconds, or it is possible that a minimum pressure is always permitted even during relaxation.
It is also possible to provide a relaxation phase between phase 1 and
During formation, the battery cell guide pins are placed between the pressure plates. The distance between the pressure plates is so large that the cell can be placed between the pressure plates using a robot arm. Each of the pressure plates may have four internally threaded through holes positioned at the four pressure plate corners. The pressure plates move as long as the spindle drive is driven by the electric motor. As soon as the pressure plates come into contact with the intermediate battery cells, further movement of the pressure plates exerts a minimal pressure force (i.e. basic pressure force) on the cells. As soon as the base Once the pressure force has reached the required level, the electric motor is deactivated so that the pressure plates can no longer move any further. The electric motor can be torque controlled. In this case, the electric motor can be deactivated if a torque built up in the spindle drive becomes greater than a limit value. This means that the base compressive force exerted by the pressure plates can remain constant during formation. However, the basic compressive force is not enough to prevent the cell from swelling unevenly. It is just enough to bring the pressure plates into contact with the intermediate battery cells. It is also possible that the pressure force exerted by the spindle drive on the pressure plates is zero.
As soon as the basic pressure force is built up, the piezo element is controlled by applying a voltage. A change in tension leads to a change in the additional compressive force exerted by the piezo element on the pressure plate stack. Various cyclic loading options are possible.
The maximum additional pressure force that can be generated by the piezo element is sufficient to ensure uniform swelling. When a minimal additional pressure force is generated, trapped gas can flow out of the battery cell. It is also possible that there is a relaxation time between two pulses during which no additional pressure force is applied. In the method according to the invention, there preferably does not have to be a separate relaxation time between phase 1 and
The initial charging begins as soon as the piezo element applies the additional pressure force to the pressure plate stack. This means that the charging takes place both with a constant basic pressure force and with cyclically varying additional pressure force that is superimposed on the basic pressure force. The force sensor measures the force and returns a signal to the electronic control unit, which controls the piezo element. In this way, the pressure exerted on the pressure stack with interposed battery cells is maintained at the desired value.
The following differences exist between the prior art and the present invention: There are no different phases during formation (i.e. initial loading). The two
With the help of the closed control loop, the pressure force can be kept constant during the charging process, for example, regardless of the swelling in different areas of the cell. According to the invention, the pressure plates are loaded with the same pressure force regardless of the different thicknesses of the battery cells.
According to the invention, the battery cells can therefore be compressed evenly, even with uneven swelling. In addition, gas can be removed since, according to the invention, the pressure force is not permanently excessively large in order to enclose the gas. According to the invention, the production rate does not decrease because no additional relaxation time is required between the first phase of charging (SEI development) and the second phase of charging (swelling). The gas is also removed during a lower force amplitude of the cyclic loading. This means that an OCV (Open Circuit Voltage Drop) cannot occur due to a line bridge. Furthermore, trapped gas is moved into the gas pocket by sufficient compression pressure created during the upper force level in the piezo element - this causes no loss of capacity. Rather, the loss of capacity is caused by gas and uneven swelling.
The additional pressure force can be generated by several piezo elements. Since the additional pressure force is controlled in a closed loop, the load does not change regardless of temperature and swelling. This increases the Coulombic efficiency after the first charge and discharge. Each cell is automatically compressed by a pressure plate that moves forward and backward with the help of screws and nuts. This makes the process automatic and also the minimum fixed force is constant at each corner. The two force components (cyclic and constant) can be controlled individually so that each charge batch can consist of different cells that require different charging parameters. The cyclic force can be varied during the charging cycle, adding more flexibility to the charging process.
Essential aspects of the invention are highlighted again in detail below: The formation station can have a basic printing unit and an additional printing unit. With the help of the basic pressure unit, the battery cell can be subjected to a particularly constant basic pressure force. With the help of the additional pressure unit, the battery cell can be subjected to an additional pressure force that can be easily changed. So that the additional pressure force can be changed with high responsiveness, it is preferred to implement the additional pressure unit as a piezo unit with an integrated piezo element, which is integrated in the above control circuit.
In a technical implementation, the base printing unit of the formation station can have a printing plate stack. The printing plate stack is made up of a number of printing plates arranged one behind the other in the direction of force. A battery cell can be positioned between adjacent pressure plates to carry out the formation process. The pressure plates can be adjusted between an unpressurized state and a pressurized state via an actuator, in particular via at least one spindle drive. In the pressurized state, the battery cells positioned in the pressure plate stack are subjected to the basic pressure force.
In terms of production technology, the spindle drive can simply have a threaded spindle running in the direction of force, which can be operated with an electric motor. The lead screw may be in threaded engagement with each of the pressure plates. In this case, when the threaded spindle is rotated, the pressure plates can be transferred to the pressurized state by the pressure plates exerting the basic pressure force on the intermediate battery cells.
The piezo unit acting as an additional pressure unit can have a carrier plate which carries the at least one piezo element. It is preferred if the carrier plate is also in threaded engagement with the threaded spindle and is arranged at one end of the printing plate stack. When the spindle drive is actuated, the printing plates can first be brought into their pressurized state, and then the carrier plate can be brought into contact with the end of the printing plate stack. The formation process (i.e. the loading process) starts as soon as the piezo element of the carrier plate can apply an additional pressure force to the printing plate stack. The electric motor can preferably be torque-controlled. This means that the pressure builds up in the printing plate stack by the electric motor drive of the threaded spindle until a torque limit is reached. When the torque limit is reached, the electric motor is deactivated.
The formation station can also have guide pins that extend in the direction of force. The pressure plates, the carrier plate and/or the battery cells can be moved along the guide pins without tilting. In a dual function, the guide pins can also form electrical contacts to which the battery cells can be integrated into a charging circuit. In addition, the formation station can have a stop element against which the printing plate stack is adjusted during pressure build-up until it reaches the pressurized state.
