Description
The invention relates to a method for recycling a painted injection-molded plastic component, wherein the injection-molded plastic component has been provided with a layer of paint applied by reaction injection molding.
Injection-molded plastic components painted in this way are known in the state of the art, for example in automobile construction. Areas of application here include decorative elements in the front end area of a motor vehicle, whereby the painted injection-molded plastic components can in principle also be equipped with decorative films, heating elements, cleaning elements, etc. The decorative elements can, for example, be used for the seamless integration of lighting elements, sensors and camera systems in the front end area of the motor vehicle, although arrangements in other areas of the motor vehicle (e.g. in the rear area) are of course also possible.
A disadvantage of the known painted injection-molded plastic components is their limited recyclability, since the composite of the usually thermoplastic material of the injection-molded plastic component and the thermosetting paint material cannot be easily separated by mechanical processes. Furthermore, since the weight proportion of the paint is comparatively large, usually > 5%, existing processes such as melt filtration cannot be used here.
Against this background, the invention is based on the object of specifying an improved recycling process.
0,5 bis 1 mm.Starting from a component with the features described at the outset, this object is achieved according to the invention in that the painted injection-molded plastic component is subjected to hydrolysis and the paint layer is then separated from the injection-molded plastic component under the effect of hydrolysis. During hydrolysis, a chemical compound is split by reaction with water. According to the invention, it was recognized that the paint layer applied in reaction injection molding can be chemically split by hydrolysis and can thus be relatively easily removed from the injection-molded plastic component and that this separation makes recycling of the component much easier. The layer thickness of the paint layer is preferably 0.3 to 3 mm, in particular 0.5 to 1 mm.
The injection-molded plastic component can be made from a thermoplastic, in particular a polycarbonate, and the paint layer from a thermosetting material, in particular a thermosetting polyurethane or polyurea oligomer. For example, when applying paint by reaction injection molding, a polyurethane-based paint layer can be applied to the injection-molded plastic component. To produce the polyurethane or polyurea, an isocyanate is expediently mixed with a polyol or a polyamine. The application to the injection-molded plastic component takes place while this mixture is still in a thin liquid state, i.e. before it hardens to form a thermoset. In principle, it is possible to apply the paint layer at the same time as the injection molding process of the plastic component. Alternatively, the paint layer can also be applied in a separate process after the actual injection molding process for the plastic component. The paint layer is expediently applied in-mold, i.e. in the same tool that is also used to shape the injection-molded plastic component.
The hydrolysis is expediently carried out at a temperature of at least 60 °C, preferably at least 70 °C. It may also be expedient to carry out the hydrolysis at a temperature of at most 100 °C, preferably at most 90 °C. The hydrolysis can be carried out at an air humidity of at least 80%, preferably at least 90%.
It is within the scope of the invention that the painted injection-molded plastic component is crushed before the hydrolysis is carried out. This increases the surface area of the paint material before the hydrolysis process and the hydrolysis process can be accelerated by means of this measure. The crushing preferably takes place to an average particle size of at most 20 mm, in particular at most 10 mm. If appropriate, the particle size can be at least 3 mm, e.g. at least 5 mm.
It can be useful if the injection-molded plastic component is crushed in order to hydrolytically separate the paint material from the material of the injection-molded plastic component. In this context, it can be advantageous if the corresponding crushed fragments are accelerated during the separation process and hit a solid obstacle, e.g. an impact plate. The impact on the obstacle can support the separation of the paint material from the material of the injection-molded plastic component. In principle, the paint material can be chemically recycled or sent for thermal recycling. The material of the injection-molded plastic component can, for example, be melted down again and granulated.
Alternatively, it is also within the scope of the invention if the paint layer is peeled off the injection-molded plastic component over a large area. To make it easier to separate, the paint layer can be provided with a peeling aid, particularly in the form of a tab, preferably during its manufacture. In this case, the paint layer is separated from the injection-molded plastic component as a coherent composite.
According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the painted injection-molded plastic component is designed as an external motor vehicle component. Alternative embodiments are of course not excluded by this. For example, the design of the painted injection-molded plastic component as a furniture part is also within the scope of the invention.
