Description
The invention relates to the use of a catalyst for removing ammonia from a hydrogen-rich fuel gas. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for removing ammonia from a hydrogen-rich fuel gas using a catalyst.
As is generally known, hydrogen is used as a fuel in fuel cells for a wide variety of applications. Ammonia is a promising, carbon-free hydrogen storage medium that has a higher volumetric energy density than hydrogen and therefore better transport and storage capacity. According to the general state of the art, a hydrogen-containing or hydrogen-rich gas with a hydrogen content of approx. 75% is obtained from ammonia in a high-temperature reactor through endothermic decomposition. However, due to the thermodynamic equilibrium, traces of ammonia in this gas, i.e. a content of up to several 100 ppm, are unavoidable. These traces of ammonia lead to significant performance losses when hydrogen is used in low-temperature fuel cells, for example proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In order to comply with the limit of 0.1 ppm ammonia typically required for use in low-temperature fuel cells, trace purification of the ammonia is necessary for such an application.
From the general state of the art, methods for removing traces of ammonia from a hydrogen-rich fuel gas supplied to a fuel cell are known in which a membrane is used to separate ammonia from the hydrogen gas.
In addition, it is possible to remove traces of ammonia from the hydrogen-containing gas by adsorption, for example on activated carbon, high-surface-area alumina or zeolites, or by absorption by gas scrubbing from the gas stream.
Furthermore, by using catalyst systems with transition metals such as vanadium, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, manganese, iron or nickel as active components on surface-rich supports such as Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 or CeO 2 , significant NH 3 conversions of up to 95% can be achieved.
It is possible to purify traces of ammonia from the hydrogen-rich gas below 1 ppm NH 3 using the above-mentioned adsorption or absorption processes; by using modified zeolite adsorbents, it is even possible to achieve a level below the limit of 0.1 ppm. However, both solutions require additional process units with corresponding plant components, some of which are operated with a high level of equipment expenditure, particularly with regard to the regeneration or replacement of the adsorbent or absorption medium.
Furthermore, the purification of the hydrogen-rich fuel gas by means of a membrane has, in addition to the high costs of the membranes in question, the further disadvantage that a relatively high pressure is required on the inlet side of the membrane in order to generate sufficient volume flows of the hydrogen-rich gas, which further increases the costs of such a process.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a use of a catalyst for removing ammonia from a hydrogen-rich fuel gas and a method for removing ammonia from a hydrogen-rich fuel gas, with which an effective and cost-effective removal of ammonia from the hydrogen-rich fuel gas is possible.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features mentioned in
By using a catalyst comprising a support material and copper as an active component, it was possible to achieve very low ammonia concentrations in the hydrogen-rich fuel gas after it had passed through the catalyst under realistic, steady-state conditions.
The catalyst used is characterized in particular by its high activity and selectivity with regard to the selective conversion of NH 3 to N 2 and H 2 O. A further advantage is that the catalyst used according to the invention only reacts the oxygen with the excess hydrogen in a very moderate manner, ie undesirable competing reactions are avoided. The catalyst used according to the invention The catalyst converts ammonia very selectively into N 2 and H 2 O, whereas in principle no NO or N 2 O is produced, as might have been expected.
In contrast to the known adsorption, absorption and membrane separation processes, the implementation of catalytic NH 3 oxidation in the supply periphery of fuel cells through the use of the catalyst according to the invention only requires a simple tubular reactor that requires very little installation space. A particular advantage of the catalyst used is its simple and cost-effective construction and the fact that regular regeneration or replacement of the adsorbent or absorbent is not necessary, which means that both investment and operating costs can be kept low.
In a very advantageous development of the invention, it can be provided that the carrier material has a specific surface area of 80 - 1000 m 2 /g, preferably 400 - 900 m 2 /g, particularly preferably 500 - 800 m 2 /g. Such a specific surface area of the carrier material has proven to be particularly advantageous with regard to a good effectiveness of the catalyst in removing ammonia from the hydrogen-rich fuel gas.
The inventors have found that if copper is present in a proportion of 0.5 - 5%, in particular 1 - 3%, of the mass of the support material, a particularly good activity and selectivity of the catalyst can be achieved. In particular, the proportion of copper can be approximately 2% of the mass of the support material.
In order to simplify the preparation of the catalyst and to ensure its effectiveness, it can further be provided that copper is present in elemental form and/or in the form of copper oxide and/or in the form of copper hydroxide.
A further advantageous embodiment of the invention can consist in the support material being a zeolite. The inventors have found that the use of zeolite as a support material, in particular in combination with the use of copper as an active component, increases the availability of the reactant ammonia in the immediate vicinity of the active component copper due to the high number of adsorption sites for ammonia and leads to a high activity and selectivity of the catalyst produced therewith.
It has been found to be particularly advantageous if the zeolite is a chabazite and/or a beta zeolite and/or an MFI zeolite and/or a Y zeolite.
A process for removing ammonia from a hydrogen-rich fuel gas is specified in claim 7.
The process according to the invention enables a very high activity and selectivity of the NH 3 conversion and thus a very effective removal of ammonia from the hydrogen-rich fuel gas. The process according to the invention can be carried out under atmospheric pressure conditions, ie at about 1 bar, and in continuous operation with little equipment expenditure.
A particularly advantageous development of the method according to the invention can consist in the hydrogen-rich fuel gas having a temperature of 175 - 250 °C, preferably 180 - 235 °C, particularly preferably 200 - 225 °C. It has been found that a comparatively low temperature of the hydrogen-rich fuel gas is sufficient for an effective conversion of the ammonia to N 2 and H 2 O. This is surprising, since the temperatures required for such reactions are usually much higher. Furthermore, the low temperatures pose only minor process-technical challenges.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, it can be provided that oxygen is supplied in the form of air and/or pure oxygen. It is particularly preferred to supply the oxygen in the form of air, since this requires only a very small amount of equipment and air is in principle available anywhere. Due to the high oxygen content in the air, it is not necessary to supply a significantly larger amount of air than is necessary.
A further advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention can consist in supplying oxygen in a proportion of 0.5 - 10%, preferably 0.5 - 5%, of the volume of the hydrogen-rich fuel gas. The inventors have found that too little oxygen leads to an insufficient reaction of the ammonia with the oxygen. Too much oxygen, on the other hand, leads to too much H 2 O being produced, since parts of the hydrogen-rich fuel gas also react with the oxygen, and thus to a certain loss of hydrogen.

In the present case, copper is present as the
Copper can be present in elemental form and/or in the form of copper oxide and/or in the form of copper hydroxide or can be used in the above-mentioned forms in the preparation of the
In the present case, the
The

In the process described here for removing ammonia from the hydrogen-rich fuel gas, oxygen, which is shown by the arrow "B", is supplied to the hydrogen-rich fuel gas before contact with the

Furthermore, it can be seen from the diagram that a small proportion of H 2 O is also produced in this temperature range. The hydrogen-rich fuel gas preferably has a temperature of 175 - 250 °C, preferably 180 - 235 °C, particularly preferably 200 - 225 °C. This temperature is the temperature at which the reaction takes place on the

The technically relevant space velocity was approximately 3000 h -1 . Each test point was kept constant for 24 hours to exclude superimposed sorption effects of the ammonia.
