Im Allgemeinen beträgt die Zugfestigkeit höchstens 5000 N, z.B. höchstens 2500 N.The tensile strength can be at least 50 N, in particular at least 55 N, preferably at least 58 N, particularly preferably at least 61.5 N, very particularly preferably at least 63 N, most preferably at least 66 N, for example at least 70 N. The tensile strength can be more than 70N. In general, the tensile strength is at most 5000 N, for example at most 2500 N.
Die Weiterreißfestigkeit kann mindestens 0,8 N, insbesondere mindestens 0,95 N, bevorzugt mindestens 1,1 N, besonders bevorzugt mindestens 1,4 N, ganz besonders bevorzugt mindestens 1,8 N, äußerst bevorzugt mindestens 2,1 N, z.B. mindestens 2,5 N, betragen. Die Weiterreißfestigkeit kann mehr als 2,5 N betragen. Im Allgemeinen beträgt die Weiterreißfestigkeit höchstens 100 N, z.B. höchstens 80 N.The tear strength can be at least 0.8 N, in particular at least 0.95 N, preferably at least 1.1 N, particularly preferably at least 1.4 N, very particularly preferably at least 1.8 N preferably at least 2.1 N, for example at least 2.5 N. The tear strength can be more than 2.5 N. In general, the tear strength is at most 100 N, for example at most 80 N.

It is a process for producing a layered composite for an electrochemical unit. The layer composite can comprise part of the layer structure of an MEA or the entire layer structure of an MEA.
The process can be a process for the continuous production of the layered composite.
By continuous production it can be meant, for example, that the process takes place with constant transport of the web into the first electrode application zone.
The constant transport can, for example, be maintained for so long that an area of the web which corresponds to a length of at least 20%, preferably at least 30%, for example at least 40% of the entire web, is guided into the first electrode application zone. The constant transport does not exclude the possibility of regular fluctuations in the feed speed of the web, including regular standstills, which can, for example, be deliberately caused repeatedly by the control of a production system.
The constant transport can preferably be maintained, for example, for such a long time that a region of the web which corresponds to a length of at least 20%, preferably at least 30%, for example at least 40% of the entire web, is guided into the first electrode application zone without interruption.
According to the invention, a web of a gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate is guided into a first electrode application zone.
The term gas-permeable means in particular that the web has a gas permeability that is usual for gas diffusion layers of fuel cells, which helps to distribute a supplied gas to the electrode.
Electrically conductive means that electrical current can flow through the substrate from one surface of the substrate to the other surface of the substrate, e.g. as in gas diffusion layers of fuel cells.
The web of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate can be, for example, a web of a nonwoven, in particular a nonwoven containing carbon fibers. In connection with the invention, it was found that certain commercially available nonwovens containing carbon fibers, e.g. the GDL H23C8 or H23C10 from Freudenberg Performance Materials SE & Co. KG, Weinheim, Germany, have the required flexural rigidity, tensile strength and tear resistance.
Compliance with the bending stiffness, tensile strength and/or tear resistance allows the web to be guided through the system at a constant conveying speed in a roller transport and to form a homogeneous coating with the electrode forming agent in a particularly reliable and continuous manner.
Compliance with the specified lower limit of bending stiffness proved to be advantageous because the web can be guided freely in the first electrode application zone and, if necessary, other existing application zones.
The web can therefore be guided through the electrode application zone by a guide element arranged in front of the electrode application zone, for example by an upstream roller, and only continued after the electrode application zone by a downstream guide element, for example by a downstream roller.
If the bending stiffness is lower, the web may sag within the electrode application zone. If there are fluctuations during the process, the track could temporarily sag more or less. This applies in particular when the web is conveyed through the first electrode application zone in a pulling manner and the pulling force is subject to fluctuations. As a result, distances from the surface of the web to a source of electrode forming agent may change. This in turn can lead to undesirable inhomogeneities in the electrode layer and thus to less efficient areas in the fuel cell stack.
This could be counteracted by one or more additional guide elements within the first electrode application zone. However, this would result in greater maintenance effort, since the additional guide element would be more exposed to the first electrode formation means and would therefore have to be cleaned often.
Corresponding effects occur in other zones and application zones.
Compliance with the lower limit of the bending stiffness therefore contributes to the fact that the electrochemical unit can be transported with little effort and constantly made available in almost constant quality.
Compliance with the specified upper limit of bending stiffness allows the process to be carried out in a production line with ordinary rollers. In particular, the guiding direction of the web can be changed on ordinary deflection rollers and the web can be provided at the beginning of the process from an unwinding zone by an ordinary roller. The term “ordinary” here refers in particular to the diameter of the rollers. For a very rigid web, unusually large rollers would have to be used in order to avoid the web from buckling if the bending radii are too small. This would significantly increase the effort required to transport the rail to and within a production line.
Compliance with the upper limit of the bending stiffness also contributes to the fact that the electrochemical unit can be provided with little effort.
The specified tensile strength of at least 50 N reduces the risk of the web tearing off during the procedure. During normal handling of a system for carrying out the method according to the invention, the tensile stress acting on the web in certain sections can fluctuate within certain limits. The membrane can usually withstand this if the tensile strength of the membrane is at or above the specified lower limit. In this way, operational interruptions can be largely avoided.
Compliance with the lower limit of tensile strength also contributes to the fact that the electrochemical unit can be provided with little effort.
The specified tear resistance of at least 0.8 N helps ensure that a tearing web does not tear through when it is guided under normal conditions to guide the web in a production line. The procedure can be continued carefully with the web torn. A small amount of waste in a torn section of the track is accepted. Complete demolition, on the other hand, often leads to much greater waste and carries the risk of freshly coated web sections sticking to system components. The latter leads to considerable effort to clean a system and put it back into operation.
Compliance with the lower limit of tear resistance also contributes to the fact that the electrochemical unit can be provided with little effort.
The bending stiffness can preferably be a bending stiffness measurable after a 3-point bending test according to ISO 178. The bending stiffness refers to a bending of the web along the web direction.
The web direction is the direction along the two edges (which run parallel to each other) of the web. The web direction therefore generally corresponds to the conveying direction along which the web is guided.
The tensile strength of the web can preferably be a maximum tensile force that can be determined in a tensile test on strip samples of the web in accordance with the EN ISO 29073-3 standard. This standard specifies a sample width of 50 mm for the strip samples. Therefore, specifying the tensile strength in the unit Newton (N) is sufficient to characterize the web. For example, regardless of the sample width, the value of at least 50 N specified for the tensile strength corresponds to a value of at least 10 N/cm. The strip sample is preferably taken from the web parallel to the web direction so that the tensile strength of the web in the web direction can be determined.
The web may have a tensile strength of at least 10 N/cm, for example at least 14 N/cm.
The tear resistance of the web can be measured using a sample of the web, particularly based on the trapezoid method in accordance with the EN ISO 9073-4:2021 standard. Deviating from this standard, the free clamping length (section 5.1 b of the standard) is set at 160 mm. The trapezoidal template (section 5.3 of the standard) is modified as follows: side lengths of the parallel sides 175 mm (instead of 25 mm) and 180 mm (instead of 100 mm), width 60 mm (instead of 75 mm) and pre-cut length 30 mm (instead of 15 mm). The measurement sample (Section 7.2 of the standard) is cut out with external dimensions of 210 × 60 mm, marked according to the template and a preliminary cut of 30 mm is made.
The tear resistance of the web can preferably be a tear resistance that can be determined based on the trapezoid method according to the standard EN ISO 9073-4:2021 and is measurable with a sample of the web. The free clamping length can be 160 mm, for example. The side lengths of the parallel sides of the trapezoid template can be 175 mm and 180 mm, for example. The width of the trapezoid template can be 60 mm, for example, and the pre-cut length 30 mm, for example. The dimensions of the web sample can be 210 mm x 60 mm, for example. The sample can be cut out of the web, marked according to the template, and a 30 mm pre-cut can be made in the web.
The pre-cut can preferably be carried out transversely to the web direction.
Experts can therefore determine without any difficulty whether a particular sheet of a gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate has the required flexural rigidity, tensile strength and/or tear resistance.
Particularly with nonwovens and papers containing carbon fibers, compliance with the required flexural rigidity, tensile strength and/or tear resistance is not a given.
To optimize electrical conductivity, the nonwovens and papers or the fibers they contain are often exposed to extremely high carbonization or graphitization temperatures. This results in a high, graphite-like order of the carbon contained. However, this increases the brittleness of the fibers. Consequently, many nonwovens and papers containing carbon fibers are mechanically less stable and therefore cannot be used in connection with the invention or cannot be used economically.
- - a bending stiffness in the range of 1500 to 6000 MPa,
- - a tensile strength of at least 70 N and
- - a tear resistance of at least 2.5 N
The electrode forming agent is preferably only transferred into the electrode layer on the first surface of the web.
The electrode forming agent is generally not a preformed electrode layer at the moment it is brought into contact with the first surface of the web.
The electrode forming agent is typically a composition containing a catalyst or catalyst precursor suitable for electrode formation.
The composition can be, for example, a fluid or a particulate composition.
The electrode forming agent may be, for example, a catalyst ink.
In connection with the invention, the first electrode application zone is understood to be the area, for example the system area, in which the first electrode formation agent is brought into contact with a first surface of the web.
The first electrode forming agent is brought into contact with the first surface of the web to produce the first electrode layer. The electrode forming agent is preferably applied to the first surface of the web. The electrode forming agent is preferably applied by one or more of the following methods: dropcasting, print coating processes, in particular doctor blading, screen printing, slot printing, gravure printing, inkjet printing, and spray coating processes.
Das Doctor-Blading wird auch als Rakelbeschichtung bezeichnet.Doctor blading is also called doctor blading.
The application of the first electrode forming agent can take place continuously or with defined interruptions. Defined interruptions allow the first electrode layer to be formed specifically in certain areas of the first surface of the web, while leaving out other areas of the first surface of the web.
This can mean that the web has a certain level of adhesion to the guide and steering rollers in a system and can be transported even more reliably. This allows a more homogeneous coating to be achieved. This can ultimately lead to consistently higher performance of an electrochemical device.
The web that is guided into the first electrode application zone preferably has a smaller average pore size on the first surface than on the second surface.
On the one hand, this can have the effect that the electrode forming agent, which is brought into contact with the first surface of the web to produce the first electrode layer, collects predominantly on the first surface and is only introduced into the interior of the substrate in small proportions. On the other hand, it can cause the larger pores of the second surface to ensure more secure adhesion of the web to guide and deflection elements of a system for carrying out the method. Both effects contribute to the homogeneity of the electrode layer in very different ways.
The web that is guided into the first electrode application zone may have a microporous layer (MPL) on the first surface.
The MPL may contain an electrically conductive component and/or a hydrophobic component, preferably an electrically conductive component and a hydrophobic component.
Kohlenstoffpartikel, umfassen. The electrically conductive component may comprise electrically conductive particles, for example carbon particles.
PTFE, umfassen. The hydrophobic component may comprise a hydrophobic polymer, in particular a hydrophobic fluoropolymer, for example PTFE.
The MPL can preferably contain electrically conductive carbon particles and PTFE.
The first surface or the MPL can be surface activated, for example by plasma treatment.
The MPL can have a layer thickness of at least 10 µm.
This can be advantageous to compensate for the unevenness of the GDL and to provide a particularly smooth first surface for coating with the electrode forming agent.
This may further cause interlocking of the MPL with fibers on the first surface, with the MPL extending into the substrate and fibers extending into the MPL.
The MPL can have a layer thickness of a maximum of 50 µm. This can reduce the risk of the MPL cracking during drying.
The web that is guided into the first electrode application zone can have a thermal conductivity of at least 0.03 W/(mK), for example at least 0.1 W/(mK), orthogonal to a central plane of the web.
This is advantageous with regard to drying the first electrode layer (and possibly further layers). If the thermal conductivity is too low, the layers will not dry optimally. Furthermore, the production line can be shortened significantly through faster drying.
The thickness tolerance of the web that is guided into the first electrode application zone can be at most +/- 60 µm, preferably at most +/- 30 µm, for example at most +/- 15 µm. This makes it possible to avoid the propagation of tolerances into the resulting layer structure. The thickness tolerance can be measured, for example, by recording a force-displacement curve. A pressure testing machine can be used for this. Suitable pressure testing machines are offered by the company ZwickRoell, among others.
If the porosity of the first surface, eg the MPL, is too high, particles contained in the electrode forming agent, eg catalyst particles, penetrate into the surface. Electrolyte-containing agents applied in a subsequent application step, eg ionomers contained therein, can also penetrate into the substrate, causing the resulting electrolyte layer to penetrate too deeply into the substrate. If the If the surface roughness of the first surface or the MPL is too large, the coated electrode layer becomes inhomogeneous, which also propagates to the homogeneity of the following layers.
This can ensure permanent contact between the electrode layer and the electrically conductive component contained in the MPL, for example the carbon particles.
It is possible to additionally reduce the surface roughness of the first surface of the web by pressing, for example by pressing the MPL. This can be done, for example, before or while guiding the web into the first electrode application zone.
The first electrode application zone can be preceded by a pressing zone. The pressing can take place on the surface of a roll which is pressed onto the first surface of the web.
The invention is not limited with regard to the origin of the web. The web can be provided from a roll from a roll-off zone, for example. The roll-off zone is typically in front of all other zones.
However, it would also be conceivable, for example, to carry out the method according to the invention directly or indirectly after producing the web of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate, without rolling the web up and unrolling it again before it is guided into the first electrode application zone. The production of the web of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate can include a carbonization step in which carbonizable precursor fibers of a web of nonwoven or paper are converted into carbon fibers.
The web, which is provided from the roll-off zone by the roll, can have an MPL on the first surface and/or be hydrophobic on the first surface.
However, it is also possible for the MPL to be applied to the first surface and/or the first surface to be made hydrophobic after the web has been provided from the roll-off zone and before the web is guided into the first electrode application zone or pressing zone.
The first electrode deposition zone may be an anode deposition zone or a cathode deposition zone. The first electrode forming agent may be an anode forming agent or a cathode forming agent, for example, an anode catalyst ink or a cathode catalyst ink.
Unless expressly stated otherwise, the term anode layer refers to the electrode layer that is intended to convert a supplied fuel, e.g. hydrogen. The terms anode application zone and anode forming agent should be understood accordingly. Pt electrocatalysts are typically used on the anode side of fuel cells that run on pure hydrogen. In addition to Pt, the Pt electrocatalysts can also contain, for example, iridium oxide and/or ruthenium.
A preferred anode forming agent may contain platinum. In addition to platinum, it can preferably contain iridium oxide and/or ruthenium.
A preferred anode catalyst ink may contain platinum. In addition to platinum, it may preferably contain iridium oxide and/or ruthenium.
Unless expressly stated otherwise, the term cathode layer refers to the electrode layer that is intended to convert supplied oxygen, which can be, for example, a component of supplied air. The terms cathode application zone and cathode formation agent should be understood accordingly. On the cathode side of fuel cells, for example, either Pt or Pt alloys are used as electrocatalysts.
Preferably, the first electrode application zone is an anode application zone, the first electrode forming agent is an anode forming agent, for example an anode catalyst ink, and the first electrode layer is an anode layer. The web of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate can therefore be guided into an anode application zone in which an anode forming agent, for example an anode catalyst ink, is brought into contact with the first surface of the web to produce an anode layer.
The anode layer in fuel cells and the associated MEA is often less thick than the cathode layer. The thinner anode layer is less prone to drying cracks and is easier to process using rollers due to its smaller contribution to increasing the bending stiffness. The anode layer can be even smoother than the cathode layer, which is why the electrolyte layer following the layer structure can be applied more homogeneously on top.
The anode is generally less critical in the operation of a fuel cell than the cathode. The inventors therefore assume that designing the first electrode layer as an anode layer allows greater scope for optimization or selection of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate with regard to process requirements.
This also means that the spectrum of suitable gas-permeable electrically conductive substrates is larger if the anode layer is applied as the first electrode layer. An anode layer that is sufficiently active (but still very thin and not very rigid) compared to the cathode layer can still be achieved even under less than optimal conditions (e.g. with relatively high roughness or porosity of the first surface of the fed web).
In other words: The process tends to be able to cope with inhomogeneities in the supplied web or the first surface of the web better and essentially without significant losses in performance during subsequent reactions on the electrodes if the anode layer is applied first.
If contact losses occur on the first surface after the formation of an anode layer as the first electrode layer due to the further guidance of the web in the course of the process, these tend to be better tolerated with regard to the performance of the resulting electrochemical unit in the fuel cell.
The web can be guided into an electrolyte application zone which is downstream of the first electrode application zone. In the electrolyte application zone, an electrolyte-containing agent is preferably brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web to produce an electrolyte layer.
In connection with the invention, the electrolyte application zone is understood to be the area, for example the system area, in which the electrolyte-containing agent is brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web.
Here and below, reference is made to the first surface, which can be completely or partially coated with the electrode layer, as the coated first surface. This is because the first surface of the web has at least one electrode layer in all zones that are downstream of the first electrode application zone. It is therefore a coated first surface.
So beschriebt z.B.
The ionomer-containing agent and the ionomer membrane contain an ionomer component.
The ionomer component can, for example, comprise a fluorinated polymer or copolymer with sulfonic acid groups, in particular a polyfluorinated polymer or copolymer with sulfonic acid groups, or mixtures thereof. These are particularly well suited as ionomer components with regard to optimized proton exchange within the ionomer membrane.
Nafion® ist von DuPont (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company) erhältlich. Aciplex® ist von Asahi Kasei K.K. erhältlich. 3M® PSFA ist von 3M Company erhältlich. Fumion® ist von der Fumatech GmbH erhältlich. Aquivion® ist von Solvay S.A. erhältlich. For example, the products that were sold at the time of registration under the names Nafion®, Aciplex®, 3M® PFSA (Perfluorosulfonic Acid), Fumion® and Aquivion®, (each) as an ionomer component, achieved particularly good properties with regard to proton exchange been. Nafion® is available from DuPont (E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company). Aciplex® is from Asahi Kasei K.K. available. 3M® PSFA is available from 3M Company. Fumion® is available from Fumatech GmbH. Aquivion® is from Solvay S.A. available.
Alternatively, anion exchange in the ionomer membrane can also be improved with the appropriate selection of the ionomer component. This is of particular importance when using the ionomer membrane in anion exchangers. For this purpose, the ionomer component preferably comprises one or more non-fluorinated polymers or essentially consists of one or more non-fluorinated polymers.
Bevorzugte nicht fluorierte Polymere sind: insbesondere Hexamethyl-p-terphenylpoly(benzimidazol), Polysulfone, beispielsweise Polyarylethersulfone, Ethylen-Tetrafluorethylen-Copolymere und Polyetheretherketon (PEEK).Preferred non-fluorinated polymers are: in particular hexamethyl-p-terphenylpoly(benzimidazole), polysulfones, for example polyaryl ether sulfones, ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymers and polyether ether ketone (PEEK).
The electrolyte-containing agent can be brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web to produce the electrolyte layer. The electrolyte-containing agent is preferably applied to the coated first surface of the web. The electrolyte-containing agent is preferably applied by one or more of the following known methods: dropcasting, print coating processes, in particular doctor blading, screen printing, slot printing, gravure printing, inkjet printing, and spray coating processes.
The electrolyte-containing agent may contain a reinforcing agent. The electrolyte layer produced in the electrolyte application zone may be reinforced.
- - reinforced against mechanical loads, for example against mechanical tensile loads, which can occur on the applied electrolyte layer when the layered composite is later rolled up onto a roll, when the layered composite is deflected over a deflection roller or when the layered composite is separated into electrochemical units; and or
- - Reinforced against mechanical stress during fuel cell operation, for example against shrinkage and swelling, or reinforced to withstand a differential pressure between anode and cathode.
The reinforcing agent may contain dispersed fibers, for example dispersed nanofibers. The electrolyte layer can be fiber-reinforced, for example nanofiber-reinforced.
The reinforcement can result in significant advantages in the conduct of the process. The introduction of the reinforcing agent into the electrolyte-containing agent enables the application of a “liquid reinforcement”. In the process according to the invention, this can enable an increase in the production speed of MEAs, since, for example, one or more lamination steps can be omitted. In addition, the reinforced electrolyte layer can be exposed to greater mechanical loads, so that less attention must be paid to avoiding load peaks when guiding and handling the web in the method according to the invention. This also applies to a later assembly of fuel cells from robust electrochemical units that were obtained using the method according to the invention. This makes it easier to implement the method and carry out the assembly in a common industrial environment.
It can be advantageous if the nanofibers have an average diameter of approximately 20 nm to approximately 3000 nm, preferably approximately 50 nm to approximately 700 nm.
Preferably, an average diameter of the nanofibers is approximately 50 nm or more, in particular approximately 100 nm or more.
In particular, the average diameter of the nanofibers is approximately 3000 nm or less, for example approximately 700 nm or less.
An average diameter of the nanofibers of approximately 20 nm is often sufficient to give the electrolyte layer sufficient strength, while a diameter of approximately 3000 nm is still small enough for embedding in an ionomer component of the electrolyte layer.
According to a preferred embodiment, a ratio of the average diameter of the nanofibers to a thickness of the electrolyte layer is about 1/20 or less.

- - Zerkleinern des Nanofasermaterials unter Bildung von Nanostäbchen;
- - Providing a nanofiber material;

The composite layer described in this document is a possible embodiment of the fiber-reinforced electrolyte layer described in connection with the method according to the invention.
The shredding of the nanofiber material, which is described in more detail there, results in nanorods which, in contrast to a nanofiber material that has not been shredded, can be particularly easily dispersed.
Due to the dispersibility, an ionomer-containing dispersion can be produced and the nanorods can therefore be applied to the substrate together with the ionomer component in one step. This eliminates the need for an additional step to apply the ionomer component.
In addition, through the formation of the nanorod ionomer dispersion, mixing of the nanofiber material crushed into nanorods and the ionomer component can be optimized. The nanorods can come into contact with the ionomer component or be embedded in it. This can enable uniformly good proton conductivity or anion conductivity of the resulting composite layer over an entire longitudinal extent of the composite layer.
In this context, “nanorods” include all structures whose extent in a first spatial direction is larger by a factor of 100 or more than extents in the other spatial directions, which are oriented perpendicular to the first spatial direction. Extensions in the other spatial directions of the nanorods are each approximately 3000 nm or less, in particular approximately 1000 nm or less. For example, the term “nanorods” also includes so-called nanowires and so-called nanowhiskers.
The average diameter of the nanofibers or the nanorods resulting after comminution and an average length of the nanorods resulting after comminution are determined according to a possible method based on electron micrographs, in particular scanning electron microscopy images. The scanning electron microscopy images are evaluated with regard to the average diameter and/or the average length using an image processing program. The average diameter or the average length is then obtained using an algorithm from data obtained using the image processing program.
The average diameter and/or the average length are given in particular as an arithmetic mean.
Preferably, the nanofibers comprise one or more of the following materials: oxides, preferably metal oxides, in particular cerium oxide and/or transition metal oxides, for example titanium dioxide and/or manganese oxide, and polymer materials. Preferred polymer materials are hydrophobic polymers, in particular polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polybenzimidazole (PBI), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyethers therketone (PEEK), polyolefins, especially polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). These have proven to be particularly advantageous materials for nanofibers or nanorods, especially with regard to the mechanical properties of the electrolyte layer, which are important in connection with the invention.
The nanofibers or nanorods can be PBI-based nanofibers or PBI-based nanorods. This can achieve a high mechanical stability of an electrolyte layer.
A crosslinking agent can be supplied to the electrolyte application zone. The crosslinking agent may be supplied when the electrolyte-containing agent is brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web.
For example, the electrolyte-containing agent can contain a crosslinking agent.
The electrolyte layer can be a cross-linked electrolyte layer. Ionomer units can be covalently bridged in the crosslinked electrolyte layer.
The crosslinking can be helpful for increasing mechanical stability and/or for increasing proton conductivity or anion conductivity.
Nanofibers or nanorods can be covalently bridged in the cross-linked electrolyte layer. For example, it can be provided that molecules of different nanorods bond with one another within the composite layer and the respective nanorods are thus networked.
Cross-linking of PBI-based nanorods can be achieved, for example, by thermal methods or chemical methods, for example by a reaction with a base.
Suitable crosslinking agents for the crosslinking of PBI-based nanorods are, for example, dialdehydes, in particular glutaraldehyde, dichlorine compounds or dibromine compounds, in particular (α,α'-)dibromo-para-xylene, or diiodine compounds, in particular diiodoctane.
It is possible to guide the web into an electrolyte pre-application zone, which is upstream of the electrolyte application zone. Preferably, in the electrolyte pre-application zone, a fiber-free electrolyte-containing agent, for example a fiber-free ionomer-containing agent, is brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web to produce an electrolyte surface layer.
Alternatively or additionally, it is possible to guide the web into an electrolyte post-application zone, which is downstream of the electrolyte application zone. Preferably, in the electrolyte post-application zone, a fiber-free electrolyte-containing agent, for example a fiber-free ionomer-containing agent, is brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web to produce an electrolyte surface layer.
The fiber-free electrolyte-containing agent mentioned in connection with the electrolyte pre-application zone and the electrolyte post-application zone preferably contains neither the nanofibers described herein nor the nanorods described herein.
An electrolyte surface layer may be present on a surface of the electrolyte layer facing the first electrode layer, preferably the fiber-reinforced electrolyte layer. The electrolyte surface layer is preferably not fiber-reinforced.
An electrolyte surface layer can be present on a surface of the electrolyte layer facing away from the first electrode layer, preferably the fiber-reinforced electrolyte layer. The electrolyte surface layer is preferably not fiber-reinforced.
The thickness of an electrolyte surface layer can preferably be in the range from 5 to 200% of the thickness of the electrolyte layer, for example in the range from 10 to 100% of the thickness of the electrolyte layer.
The thickness of an electrolyte surface layer can preferably be 1 to 10 µm, e.g. 2 to 5 µm.
The thickness of the electrolyte layer can preferably be 3 to 40 µm, e.g. 5 to 15 µm.
The web can be guided into a second electrode application zone, which is downstream of the electrolyte application zone and, if present, also downstream of the electrolyte post-application zone. Preferably, in the second electrode application zone, a second electrode forming agent is brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web to produce a second electrode layer.
The electrode forming agent is preferably only transferred into the second electrode layer on the coated first surface of the web.
The second electrode forming means is generally not a preformed electrode layer at the moment it is brought into contact with the coated first surface of the web.
The second electrode forming agent is typically a composition containing a catalyst or catalyst precursor suitable for electrode formation.
The composition can be, for example, a fluid or a particulate composition. Suitable fluids and compositions have already been referred to above in connection with the first electrode formation agent.
The second electrode forming agent may be, for example, a catalyst ink.
In connection with the invention, the second electrode application zone is understood to be the area, for example the system area, in which the second electrode formation agent is brought into contact with a second surface of the web.
The second electrode forming agent is brought into contact with the first coated surface of the web to produce the second electrode layer. The second electrode formation agent is preferably applied to the first coated surface of the web. The electrode forming agent is preferably applied by one or more of the following known methods: dropcasting, print coating processes, in particular doctor blading, screen printing, slot printing, gravure printing, inkjet printing, and spray coating processes.
The second electrode deposition zone may be a cathode deposition zone, the second electrode forming agent may be a cathode forming agent such as a cathode catalyst ink, and the second electrode layer may be a cathode layer.
It may be preferred to form a thicker electrode layer in the second electrode application zone than in the first electrode application zone.
Typically, the two half-reactions of a fuel cell are promoted by different catalysts.
The first electrode forming means may preferably be different from the second electrode forming means. This makes it possible to optimize the two electrode layers for the respective half-reaction.
The first electrode layer preferably differs from the second electrode layer.
The layered composite can be rolled up in a roll-up zone.
The roll-up zone can preferably be downstream of all other zones.
Das Verfahren kann ein Rolle-zu-Rolle-Verfahren sein kann. The process can be a roll-to-roll process.
In roll-to-roll processes, a flexible film material is typically unwound from a roll to coat a surface and then wound up again for interim storage after treatment. In connection with the invention, the flexible film material is replaced by a web of gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate.
- - zwei Elektrodenschichten,
- - two layers of gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate,
- - an electrolyte layer arranged between the two layers and
- - two electrode layers,
- - that the two electrode layers and the electrolyte layer are preformed on a surface of a web, or
- - that one of the electrode layers and the electrolyte layer are preformed on a surface of a track and the other electrode layer on a surface of the other track,
It can be particularly advantageous if, in the method according to the invention for producing the layered composite, in particular in the method according to the invention for producing the MEA layered composite, in addition to the web of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate, a further web of a gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate is supplied.
One roll can provide one lane and a second roll can provide the second lane. The MEA layer composite can preferably be produced from both sheets.
The MEA layer composite can be separated into electrochemical units in a separation zone.
The invention is also not limited with regard to the origin of the second path. The web can, for example, be provided from a second roll-off zone by a second roller.
A further method according to the invention can be a method for producing an electrochemical unit, comprising the method for producing the layer composite, in particular the MEA layer composite, wherein the layer composite, in particular the MEA layer composite, is separated into electrochemical units in a separation zone.
The isolation zone is typically downstream of all other zones.
This means that the method can be a method for producing a layer composite for an electrochemical unit, in particular an MEA layer composite for an electrochemical unit, with subsequent separation.
The separation can include cutting the layer composite, e.g. the MEA layer composite. The layer composite can be cut into electrochemical units, e.g. MEA units.
The separation can preferably take place without previously rolling up the layered composite, in particular without previously rolling up the MEA layered composite.
Direct separation is particularly suitable if one of the layers of the layered composite is designed in such a way that it could be damaged if it is rolled up again.
- - a web of a gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate and

- - a bending stiffness in the range from 500 to 12,000 MPa, e.g. 1,500 to 6,000 MPa,
- - a tensile strength of at least 50 N, e.g. at least 70 N,
- - a tear strength of at least 0.8 N, e.g. at least 2.5 N.
The “electrode layer” on the first surface of the web mentioned in connection with the layer composite according to the invention is also referred to herein as the “first electrode layer”.
The layer composite may comprise one or more additional layers.
- - an electrolyte layer, wherein the first electrode layer is arranged between the electrolyte layer and the first surface of the web,
- - a second electrode layer, wherein the electrolyte layer is arranged between the first and the second electrode layer.
In particular if the layer composite is an MEA layer composite, the flexural rigidity, tensile strength and/or tear resistance can also assume values other than those specified here.
All features and properties that have been described in connection with a method according to the invention for the layered composite or a layer of a layered composite can of course also be features or properties of the layered composite according to the invention.
For example, the arithmetic mean roughness Ra of a second surface of the web can be at least 0.3 µm, e.g. at least 1 µm.
The layer composite can, for example, comprise the first electrode layer on an MPL, which has the track on its first surface.
The layered composite can also have a thermal conductivity of at least 0.03 W/(mK), for example at least 0.1 W/(mK), orthogonally to a central plane of the layered composite.
According to the invention, the object is also achieved by a layered composite for an electrochemical unit, the layered composite being obtainable using a method according to the invention.
- - a layer of a gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate and
- - an electrode layer on a first surface of the layer,
- - a bending stiffness in the range from 500 to 12,000 MPa, e.g. 1,500 to 6,000 MPa,
- - a tensile strength of at least 50 N, e.g. at least 70 N,
- - a tear strength of at least 0.8 N, e.g. at least 2.5 N.
The “electrode layer” mentioned in connection with the electrochemical unit according to the invention on the first surface of the layer is also referred to herein as the “first electrode layer”.
As already mentioned above in connection with the method according to the invention, such an electrochemical unit can be obtained, for example, by separating the layer composite. The layer composite can then be cut to size to form electrochemical units.
The layer of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate can therefore be a cut of the web of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate. The position of the gas-permeable, electrically conductive substrate corresponds to a gas diffusion layer or a gas diffusion layer (GDL). The electrochemical unit can therefore differ from the prior art, for example in terms of its flexural rigidity, tensile strength and/or tear resistance, which a layered composite with a known gas diffusion layer known from the prior art does not have.
In one embodiment, the electrochemical unit can therefore consist of the layer and an electrode layer on the first surface of the layer. The electrochemical unit can comprise one or more further layers.
- - an electrolyte layer, the first electrode layer being arranged between the electrolyte layer and the first surface of the layer,
- - a second electrode layer, the electrolyte layer being arranged between the first and second electrode layers.

The electrochemical unit can, for example, comprise the first electrode layer on a microporous layer which has the layer on its first surface.
The electrochemical unit can also have a thermal conductivity of at least 0.03 W/(mK), for example at least 0.1 W/(mK), orthogonally to a central plane of the electrochemical unit.
According to the invention, the object is also achieved by an electrochemical unit, the electrochemical unit being obtainable by a method according to the invention.

The use can in particular be a use of the web for the continuous production of a layer composite with successive application of several active layers, wherein the active layers at least one electrode layer described herein, e.g. anode layer, and an electrolyte layer, e.g. ionomer membrane.
Weitere bevorzugte Merkmale und/oder Vorteile der Erfindung sind Gegenstand des nachfolgenden Ausführungsbeispiels:Further preferred features and/or advantages of the invention are the subject of the following exemplary embodiment:
