An accumulator arrangement has a housing in which two or more cell stacks are mounted and electrically connected. Each of the cell stacks includes multiple battery cells. A fire protection device separates adjacent or opposite cell stacks from one another in terms of fire protection in the housing. The fire protection device has a first fire-retardant layer, which is arranged between a contacting side of a cell stack and a contacting space provided in the housing. At least one second fire-retardant layer is arranged between two cell stacks with their contacting sides facing each other. A channel is formed between a respective first fire-retardant layer and the side of the at least one second fire-retardant layer facing it, which guides a gas or fire jet escaping from the corresponding cell stack in the event of damage through a degassing opening or a bursting element out of the housing. The at least one second fire-retardant layer extends to the degassing opening or the bursting element.
Description
FELD DER ERFINDUNGFIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to an accumulator arrangement with a plurality of cell stacks, each comprising a cell stack, which are arranged in a housing, separated from fire protection means.
HINTERGRUNDBACKGROUND
Accumulator arrangements, in particular those of electrically powered vehicles, store large amounts of energy. As a rule, the cells of the accumulator arrangements are based on electrochemical energy storage, in which electrons are stored by means of a chemical reaction as a result of the charging current, and electrons are released during discharging as a result of a reverse chemical reaction. The reaction partners are usually separated from one another by a layer that is only permeable to electrons or ions, so that they are not in direct contact with one another.
In direct contact with one another, with the ambient air, with water or other substances, the reaction partners of the battery cells can generate such great heat in a strong exothermic reaction that the battery cell or its components catch fire.
Depending on the respective cell chemistry, a gas and/or fire jet can occur, which can also transport particles. Such particles usually have a diameter of less than 1 millimeter. A gas and/or fire jet loaded with such particles can have the same effect as sandblasting and therefore has a high potential for mechanical destruction. The particles can also be electrically conductive, for example if electrically conductive material melts and is entrained by the gas or fire jet. These electrically conductive particles can be deposited on neighboring cells and lead to short circuits there, so that the fire spreads. In addition, if a battery cell develops a lot of heat, a battery cell arranged adjacent to it can also be damaged and thus catch fire itself, so that in the worst case there is a chain reaction in which the entire battery arrangement is destroyed and possibly also a device in which the accumulator arrangement is arranged.
Cell stacks comprising several battery cells, also referred to as cell stacks, are usually arranged in a battery module housing together with electrical contacts and possibly electronic components. Battery systems, in particular in electric and hybrid vehicles, generally have a battery system housing in which several battery module housings are usually arranged and connected to one another. In the event of a fire, electrical contacts and necessary openings in housings represent weak points through which a fire can spread.
Current and future legal regulations for the protection of occupants of electric and hybrid vehicles stipulate that the spread of fires in a battery module housing or battery system housing must be locally limited and the spread to neighboring cell stacks must be prevented or at least delayed so that at least personal injury is prevented by a rapidly spreading fire is prevented.
BESCHREIBUNG DER ERFINDUNGDESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the invention to create an accumulator arrangement with several cell stacks arranged in a housing, in which a fire in a cell stack is limited to this cell stack and the amount of combustible material and thus the energy that can be released is kept small. In particular, the invention is based on the object of providing fire protection in which effective thermal insulation of the defective battery cell(s) is guaranteed even in the event of a damage-related gas and/or fire jet escape and thus the integrity of a battery housing is guaranteed at least for a predetermined time interval after the occurrence of a damage is preserved.
This object is achieved by the accumulator arrangement described in claim 1. A method for producing an accumulator arrangement according to the invention is described in claim 7 . Advantageous refinements and further developments are described in the respective dependent claims.
A storage battery arrangement according to a first aspect of the invention has a housing in which two or more cell stacks are mounted and electrically connected. The electrical connection can be made, for example, via busbars, which connect the electrical connections of the cells and/or the poles of the cell stack in series or in parallel. The battery cells of a cell stack can be connected in series or in parallel. In addition, electronic components can be assigned to each cell stack, for example for detecting currents, voltages, temperatures and the like on individual or all battery cells. In addition, a fire protection device is provided in the housing, which separates cell stacks arranged adjacent or opposite one another in terms of fire protection from one another in the housing. The fire protection separation can be provided at least on one side of the respective cell stack, for example a side of the cell stack on which electrical contacts are brought out. In the context of this description, the term separated or closed in terms of fire protection is to be understood in such a way that hot gases, sparks or incendiary rays cannot easily overcome the separation. For example, if a housing has closed walls on five sides made of a non-combustible or at least hardly flammable material, e.g. a non-flammable metal with a high melting point, and has openings for cables on a sixth side, and between the cables and the sixth Electrical insulation made of a material with a lower melting point is arranged on the side wall, then the five sides each form a fire protection separation. Depending on the material of the electrical insulation, usually plastic, and the stability of its connection with the sixth side wall, the sixth side does not represent a fire protection separation.
According to the invention, the fire protection device has a first and a second fire-retardant layer. The first fire-retardant layer is arranged between a contacting side of a cell stack and a contacting space provided in the housing. The contacting side is usually the side of the cell stack on which the electrical contacts of the cell stack are accessible from the outside. The contacting space can be used, among other things, to electrically connect cell stacks to one another and, if necessary, to lead an electrical connection out of the housing. At least one second fire-retardant layer is arranged between two cell stacks with their contacting sides facing each other. A channel is formed between a respective first fire-retardant layer and the side of the at least one second fire-retardant layer facing it, which guides a gas or fire jet escaping from the corresponding cell stack through a degassing opening or a bursting element out of the housing. To prevent a jet of gas or fire from entering the channel formed between the at least one second fire-retardant layer and the first fire-retardant layer of the adjacent or opposite cell stack, the at least one second fire-retardant layer extends to the degassing opening or the bursting element. The degassing opening or the bursting element are located, for example, on a side of the housing facing away from a room that is to be particularly protected from the effects of heat or the spread of a fire, for example the passenger compartment of an electric or hybrid vehicle stuff. In addition, a collecting container can be provided outside the housing, which collects particles transported in the gas and/or fire jet. The channel formed by the fire-retardant layers can be set up to guide the gas and/or fire jet along a predetermined path. Guiding can be done, for example, by ribs and/or channels formed along the surface.
The fire-retardant layers are preferably flat and preferably also have poor thermal conductivity, at least in a direction normal to the surface of the layer, so that heat transfer through the fire-retardant layer to adjacent cell stacks or other components is made more difficult.
According to the invention, each of the cell stacks has a second fire-retardant layer. A fire-retardant, heat-resistant foam or an airgel is arranged between the second fire-retardant layers of two adjacent or opposite cell stacks, whereby thermal and/or electrical insulation can be achieved and the amount of free air between the cell stacks is reduced.
In one or more configurations, electrical connectors are arranged between the respective first fire-retardant layer and the at least one second fire-retardant layer, via which electrical contacts of battery cells the cell stack in the contacting space is accessible and with other cell stacks arranged in the housing of the accumulator arrangement and/or with a can be connected from outside the housing of the accumulator arrangement accessible electrical connection. By arranging the electrical connectors, which can include power rails, for example, between the fire-retardant layers, melting of the electrical connectors can be prevented or at least delayed in the event of a fire.
In one or more configurations, the fire-retardant layers consist of steel, a glass fiber-reinforced plastic, a composite material, a fire protection fleece, a ceramic or an aerogel, or a combination of one or more of the substances mentioned above.
In one or more configurations, electrical connectors or means for fastening them or for electrically connecting them to one another are provided in the first and/or the second fire-retardant layer. In particular, the first fire-retardant layer can have means for fastening electrical contacts of the battery cells connecting busbars, and the second fire-retardant layer can have sleeves or other means for connecting a plurality of busbars.
In one or more configurations, the case includes a case main body and at least one lid. For example, the main body of the housing can be designed as an extruded profile, which is closed at opposite ends with a cover in each case.
In one or more configurations, an even number of like cell stacks are arranged in the housing. Two cell stacks can be stored in a chamber provided in the housing. Each of the cell stacks stored together in a chamber of a housing preferably has at least one first fire-retardant layer on the side facing the respective other cell stack. In addition, a second fire-retardant layer can be arranged between the first fire-retardant layers.
The accumulator arrangement described above and its fire protection direct a jet of gas and/or fire out of the housing in such a way that another cell stack arranged in the housing is not exposed to direct thermal stress from an adjacent cell stack. A thermal insulating layer that may be provided between two cell stacks is also protected from damage.
The cells of a cell stack can include, for example, so-called pouch cells or prismatic cells. In an electric or hybrid vehicle, these can preferably be arranged in the housing such that cell layers are aligned essentially orthogonally to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, and that the electrical connections of the battery cells are arranged in one or more cell sides orthogonal to the transverse direction of the vehicle.
A method for producing a rechargeable battery arrangement according to the invention as described above comprises the provision of at least two cell stacks, each of the cell stacks comprising a plurality of battery cells, and a housing of the rechargeable battery arrangement. The method also includes attaching a first fire-retardant layer to a contact side of each of the cell stacks, and attaching, to at least every second cell stack, a second fire-retardant layer in front of a side of the first fire-retardant layer that faces away from the contact side of the cell stack, so that between the first and a channel is formed in the second fire retardant layer. Afterward the cell stacks are arranged in the housing of the accumulator arrangement in such a way that the contacting sides of two of the cell stacks are opposite one another, namely at least each cell stack with only a first fire-retardant layer always has a cell stack with a second fire-retardant layer.
In one or more configurations of the method, before the first fire-retardant layer is applied, electrical connections of battery cells of the respective cell stack are electrically connected to one another. In addition, signal lines from cell monitoring devices can be routed and connected before the first fire-retardant layer is applied.
By limiting a fire within a housing of the accumulator arrangement to a limited number of battery cells, the accumulator arrangement according to the invention leads to improved safety, in particular in electric or hybrid vehicles. The possibility created by the fire protection device of the accumulator arrangement according to the invention of storing several cell stacks together in one chamber without reducing safety also reduces the weight and the space requirement of the accumulator arrangement compared to a conventional accumulator arrangement with the same energy content at reduced costs.
