Abstract
An individual plant protection according to the patent claims serves to protect a young forest tree from damage caused by competing vegetation, animals and weather. Due to its funnel shape, it improves the water supply, the protection from competing vegetation, the supply of light and plant growth compared to a conventional individual plant protection cover according to the state of the art. It is very stable and can be stored and transported in a space-saving manner. The individual plant protection cover has a continuous inverted straight cone shape or, after an inverted straight cone shape that only opens slightly upwards in the lower foot area, an inverted straight cone shape that then opens wide in the upper opening area. The continuous inverted straight cone shape can also be assembled and disassembled using slots and hooks or tabs on the edge of an overlapping area, thus enabling reusability. Stability is achieved by holding rods that are inserted into locking slots and held there, or by metal stands that are inserted into suitable locking holes, as well as by pegs that can be hooked into two ventilation slots in the lower foot area.
Description
- - other plants that compete for nutrients, light and especially water and that can crowd out and overgrow the planted forest trees. To avoid this, so-called cultural management is usually carried out in the first few years, in which the competing vegetation is removed.
- - Animals, particularly red deer, fallow deer and roe deer, by biting off young shoots and buds, particularly the terminal bud, known as browsing, by stripping off the velvet skin after the antlers have grown on young stems, known as sweeping, and by hitting the antlers on the young stems, as well as by wild boar digging up the planted soil and by hares browsing on the young stems or by mice gnawing on them. To prevent damage from red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and wild boar, the planting is usually protected with a fence.
- - weather conditions such as frost during the growing season, which can cause shoots to freeze, and particularly dry periods, particularly when combined with very hot days, which cause the soil area through which the young forest trees are rooted to dry out, thereby interrupting the water supply. The heat can also irreversibly damage leaves or needles, causing the young forest trees to dry out. Climate change is leading to more extreme, i.e. longer and hotter, dry periods in spring and summer. This significantly increases the risk of plantations drying out. On the other hand, climate change in particular is making it necessary to convert forests into resilient forest ecosystems that are appropriate to the location. Mixed forests are being sought in particular. Artificial irrigation to prevent this damage is of no practical relevance due to the accessibility, size and number of forest tree plantations.
The patent claims concern the individual protection of young forest trees. There are already individual plant protection covers. These are simply straight, full-surface growth covers or net-like tree protection grids that enclose the young tree like a tube or box, are 90 cm to 180 cm high and have a diameter or width of between 10 cm and 20 cm. In a further step, one or two support rods are usually attached using cable ties or prefabricated loops.
- - Water supply: Within the individual plant protection, the young forest tree dominates the competing vegetation, but not outside. The immediately available water supply from rain is therefore determined by the size of the opening of the individual plant protection. The funnel shape according to
1 and 2 enables a much larger opening area compared to a conventional individual plant protection according to the state of the art and thus a much higher direct rain inflow. For example, the area with a diameter of 20 cm is around 314 cm 2 , and with a diameter of 50 cm it is around 1,963 cm 2 . A young forest tree therefore has a much larger amount of water directly available in comparison, with the advantage of promoting growth and better surviving dry periods.patent claims - - Pressure from competition and lighting conditions: Outside the individual plant protection, the competing vegetation grows unhindered. The individual plant protection can be overgrown and over-grown and, if a tree protection grid is used, competing vegetation can also grow in. The full-surface funnel shape of the patent claim according to 1. and 2. prevents over-growth and makes it significantly more difficult for over-growth to occur. Below the canopy area of the funnel, the competing vegetation is disadvantaged by the lower water supply and is at the same time better deterred by the funnel shape. The funnel shape also improves the supply of light, with the advantage of promoting growth.
- - Plant growth: The tubular or box-like shape of the conventional plant protection severely restricts the lateral growth of the plants, which often results in the plants having a slender, weak growth with a thin, unstable stem that must be supported by the plant protection. In addition, with full-surface growth covers there is a risk of damage due to heat build-up and with tree protection grids there is a risk of the young forest tree growing into the grid and thus the risk of injury when the removal of the protection. The restriction of growth is particularly problematic when planting conifers, which naturally have strong lateral growth in the juvenile stage.
- - Protection against browsing: The unhindered growth of the terminal bud is particularly important for the development of the young forest tree. Due to the funnel shape according to
patent claim 1. and 2., the individual plant protection does not have to be as high as the conventional individual plant protection according to the state of the art in order to achieve equivalent protection against browsing of the terminal bud, or at the same height has better protection against browsing of the terminal bud by wild animals, since the terminal bud is further away from the upper protective edge. - - Assembly and disassembly, storage and transport: The funnel shape according to patent claims 1 and 2 has the advantage that it can be stacked one inside the other to save space when manufactured in the same way.
Patent claim 3 has the advantage of space-saving transport and storage due to its flat shape and, in conjunction withpatent claim 4, the advantage of being able to be assembled and disassembled in two simple steps: inserting or releasing hooks or tabs in insertion slots and inserting holding rods in locking slots and, if necessary, a peg in a ventilation slot or a metal stand in locking holes. - - Stability: In conventional individual plant protection according to the state of the art, one or two support rods are attached directly to the tube- or box-like protection. Patent claims 5 and 6 enable greater stability, as three support rods can be placed at a greater distance and, in the case of
patent claim 2, a locking peg can also be placed. Greater stability is achieved, particularly when using the two metal stands according topatent claim 7, which can be reused almost indefinitely.

A plant protection cover according to the patent claims is intended for young forest trees up to an age of about 4 years or 1.2 m in height.
