The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell system, in particular a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell system. Furthermore, the invention relates to a control unit that is set up to carry out steps of the method.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Here, hydrogen molecules are consumed or removed. The hydrogen is fed to an anode and the oxygen, in particular in the form of air, to a cathode. The polymer electrolyte membrane is arranged between the anode and the cathode of a PEM fuel cell.
In order to increase the electrical voltage generated, in practical application several fuel cells are stacked to form a fuel cell stack, the so-called "stack". Inside the stack there are supply channels through which the individual fuel cells are supplied with hydrogen and air. Further channels serve to transport away the depleted gases emerging from the fuel cells on the anode and cathode sides.
Since gas escaping from the fuel cells on the anode side usually still contains residual hydrogen, it is recirculated and fed back to the fuel cells. The recirculation can be effected passively with the aid of a jet pump and/or actively with the aid of a gas delivery unit. Since the gas also contains water, it is first fed to a water separator in order to separate the water from the gas flow. The water separator usually also has the task of storing separated water. For this purpose, the water separator has a container in which the separated water is collected. If the container is full, opening a valve, the so-called "drain valve", drains water out of the container or empties the container.
The tanks of water separators are usually designed for a defined maximum amount of water or a defined maximum water volume V_max. This defined amount of water or this defined volume of water must not be exceeded, otherwise the water will not stay safely in the container. In particular, the container can overflow or - in mobile applications - spill over while driving. In the worst case, water that does not stay in the container can get back to the stack inlet, which can damage the fuel cell stack.
The amount of water that passes from the cathode side to the anode side during operation of a fuel cell system depends on the system operation and varies between m_dot_water_min and m_dot_water_max. The amount of water is a function of the cathode moisture, the coolant temperature, the stack current, the operating pressure and other variables.
In order to determine the optimal time to open the drain valve, a fill level sensor can be used, which detects the "container full" status. In mobile applications, however, a fill level sensor is exposed to fluctuations and/or vibrations that can affect the measurement result, so that the use of a fill level sensor is problematic.
The present invention is concerned with the task of specifying a method for operating a fuel cell system that allows a drain valve arranged on the anode side to be regulated as simply and at the same time as reliably as possible.
BeschreibungTo solve the problem, the method with the features of claim 1 is proposed. Advantageous developments of the invention can be found in the dependent claims. In addition, a control device for carrying out the method or individual method steps is specified. Description
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of Invention
- - maximum filling level (V_max) and maximum water mass flow (m_dot_Wasser_max), which passes from a cathode area into the anode circuit, or
- - maximum filling level (V_max) and the actual water mass flow, which passes from a cathode area into the anode circuit,
Because the time that elapses before the drain valve opens again can be specified in a fixed manner or is variable, different operating modes are possible.
If the time is fixed, the case of the maximum possible water mass flow must be covered ("worst case"). This means that a water mass flow is assumed that may be significantly higher than the actual water mass flow. The drain valve may then be opened earlier than is absolutely necessary. However, this reliably prevents the container from overflowing, so that this mode of operation has proven to be particularly robust.
If a variable time is specified, the actual water mass flow, ie the actual water mass flow, can be taken into account. Alternatively, a maximum water mass flow that is as close as possible to the actual water mass flow can be taken as a basis. In contrast to the "robust" operating mode, the drain valve can thus be opened later, preferably only when the maximum filling level V_max has been reached or shortly before. This mode of operation therefore proves to be particularly efficient.
Regardless of the operating mode ("robust" or "efficient"), the fixed or variable time until reopening can be calculated from the maximum filling level V_max divided by the maximum water mass flow m_dot_Wasser_max.
The maximum filling level V_max in the container is preferably defined in advance and is therefore known. Since the container for collecting the water separated with the aid of the water separator has a fixed, predetermined volume, V_max can be determined in advance. A V_max that is smaller than the actual volume of the container is preferably selected, so that overflowing is reliably avoided. This is particularly advantageous for mobile applications, since then sloshing movements cannot lead to the container overflowing either.
The maximum water mass flow (m_dot_Wasser_max) is preferably determined in advance and/or currently determined during the operation of the fuel cell system. A previously determined maximum water mass flow can be used as a basis for the “robust” operating mode in particular. If the "efficient" operating mode is selected, a maximum water mass flow is preferably determined which is as close as possible to the actual water mass flow. This is possible because the amount of water passing from the cathode area into the anode circuit is a function of certain operating variables, such as cathode moisture, coolant temperature, stack current, operating pressure and other variables. Since these variables are generally known, the actual water mass flow can be calculated on the basis of these variables, on the basis of which the maximum water mass flow m_dot_wasser_max is then established.
A multi-dimensional data model characterizing the water mass flow is preferably used for the current determination of the maximum water mass flow m_dot_Wasser_max. Since the amount of water that passes from the cathode area into the anode circuit is a function of certain operating variables, a multidimensional data model can be created that describes these causal relationships. In this case, the overflowing amount of water no longer has to be detected or measured by sensors, but can be determined in real-time based on operating variables that are known per se. This in turn enables a particularly efficient regulation of the drain valve.
- - Kathodenfeuchte,
- - Kathodenmassenstrom,
- - Anodenfeuchte,
- - Anodenmassenstrom
- - Anodentemperatur,
- - Kühlmitteltemperatur,
- - Stackstrom,
- - kathoden- und/oder anodenseitiger Betriebsdruck.
- - cathode moisture,
- - cathode mass flow,
- - anode moisture,
- - anode mass flow
- - anode temperature,
- - coolant temperature,
- - stack current,
- - operating pressure on the cathode and/or anode side.
Each one of the variables mentioned above can influence the amount of water passing from the cathode area into the anode circuit, so that they are interrelated that can be described by a multidimensional data model, with the help of which the maximum amount of water m_dot_Wasser_max can be currently determined. The actual mass flow can also be calculated.
Preferably, at least one variable of the above variables is recorded during operation of the fuel cell system and/or made available by a control unit. It is advisable to record individual variables, since they are necessary for the operation of a fuel cell system anyway. This applies in particular with regard to the cathode moisture, the coolant temperature, the stack current and the operating pressure. If individual variables are recorded outside of the operation of the fuel cell system, they can be transmitted to a control unit so that current values are available in each case. The drain valve can then be controlled accordingly with the aid of the control unit.
Advantageously, a safety factor is taken into account when specifying the time after which the drain valve must be opened again at the latest. This applies in particular to mobile applications in which sloshing movements can occur in the container as a result of acceleration, braking, driving uphill or downhill. Because then there is a risk that the container will overflow, although the actual fill level is below the maximum fill level V_max. The inclusion of the safety factor leads to a reduction in the fixed or variable time.
Furthermore, it is proposed that during operation of the fuel cell system the status “tank empty” is recognized and the drain valve is closed when the tank is empty. The “container empty” status can be detected using methods and/or means known from the prior art, for example using a sensor, in particular a level sensor. If a sensor is not required, the "container empty" status can also be detected using a hydrogen metering valve integrated into the anode circuit and/or a gas delivery unit integrated into the anode circuit.
Furthermore, the status “tank full” is preferably recognized during operation of the fuel cell system and the drain valve is opened when the tank is full. The detection of the condition "tank full" is only used to ensure that the drain valve is opened before the tank overflows. Ideally, the "tank full" status is not reached because the drain valve is opened shortly beforehand. When the “container full” status is detected, the maximum fill quantity V_max and/or the maximum water mass flow m_dot_Wasser_max can be adjusted. Alternatively or additionally, a safety factor can be taken into account or a safety factor that has already been taken into account can be adjusted.
In addition, a control unit is proposed which is set up to carry out steps of the method according to the invention. In particular, the drain valve can be controlled with the aid of the control device in such a way that it is opened according to the "robust" operating mode or according to the "efficient" operating mode. The operating modes differ in that the drain valve is opened either after a fixed time or after a time that can be determined variably. The time is based on a maximum filling level V_max, which is known to the control device, divided by a maximum water mass flow m_dot_Wasser_max, which is preferably currently determined. For this purpose, a multi-dimensional data model can be stored in the control unit, which describes the causal relationship of certain operating variables in relation to the amount of water that passes from the cathode area into the anode circuit during operation of the fuel cell system. The operating variables to be implemented in the data model are either already known to the control unit or they are currently being measured.

Full detection can also be integrated into both methods as a safeguard. If this is triggered, it can be used to determine or re-determine a safety factor. Furthermore, the overflowing water volume can be corrected or the time specification can be adjusted accordingly. The newly determined parameters can also be stored in a control device for controlling the drain valve. If the tank is full, an emptying process should also be started to prevent the tank from overflowing.
