Zudem betrifft die Erfindung ein Brennstoffzellensystem. The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell system in which a cathode gas with a first reactant and an anode gas with a second reactant are converted into electricity in a fuel cell, with the fuel cell being operated in a normal state and flushed in such a way that a normal operating concentration of the second reactant is set in an anode of the fuel cell, and the fuel cell is operated in a demand state and flushed in such a way that a demand concentration of the second reactant is set in the anode, the demand concentration being higher than the normal operating concentration. The invention also relates to a fuel cell system.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
In fuel cells, unwanted gases such as nitrogen can diffuse from one electrode to the other through the membrane. For example, there is then cathode gas at the anode and anode gas at the cathode. This effect has been known for a long time. A tried and tested strategy has been found to flush the cathode or anode. In this case, fresh, ie, as far as possible pure, gas is fed to the electrode, with the gas that has diffused through being displaced and flushed to an exhaust air. However, constant flushing of the electrodes would result in very high gas consumption. Electrodes are therefore generally operated at least partially in recirculation, with the gas flowing along a flow path along the electrode being returned at the end of the flow path to the beginning of the flow path of the electrode. Accordingly, in normal operation of a fuel cell, recirculation and flushing alternate. The control of when recirculation and when flushing takes place can be time-controlled or time-discrete, for example. Control can also take place in an energy-optimized manner, with the pump power required for the recirculation and the power that can be generated by the fuel cell being taken into account in particular in order to determine an optimal value.

According to a first aspect of the invention is a method for operating a fuel cell system for a consumer, in particular a vehicle, in which a cathode gas with a first reactant and an anode gas with a second reactant are converted into electricity in a fuel cell, the fuel cell being operated in a normal state and is flushed in such a way that a normal operating concentration of the second reactant is set in an anode of the fuel cell, and the fuel cell is operated in a demand state and flushed in such a way that a demand concentration of the second reactant is set in the anode, the demand concentration being higher than the normal operating concentration , intended.
The method of the present invention works in such a way that during operation of the fuel cell, in addition to the normal state, another operating mode is provided in the so-called demand state, in which the flushing and recirculation in the anode is not carried out in an energy- or time-optimized manner, for example, as in the normal state, but to a increased requirement of the fuel cell or the performance of the fuel cell is adapted.
The demand state can occur, for example, when a user requires more electrical power than usual, thereby accepting an increased consumption of the anode gas. However, it can also be provided that the request state is triggered by the state of the fuel cell itself. For example, when driving uphill in a hot country, where cooling is limited on the one hand and the electrical power provided is high on the other, the fuel cell may need to be “derated” (i.e. throttled the output power) in the normal state becomes. This can be avoided by the demand state, since in the demand state on the one hand the efficiency of the reaction in the fuel cell is increased, resulting in less waste heat and on the other hand more cool anode gas is made available in the anode space. A requirement state can also be triggered by the state of the fuel cell because the fuel cell has already reached a certain age. Then by operating in Requirement state the progressive aging can be at least slowed down.
A consumer within the meaning of the invention is any device that is suitable for being operated with electrical energy. The consumer can in particular be a mobile consumer who is not connected to a power grid, in particular during use. Typical examples of such mobile consumers are vehicles, such as land, sea and air vehicles. In particular, it can be provided that the consumer is a motor vehicle which is designed with a tank for anode gas.
A vehicle can also be provided which has a fuel cell system according to the invention and/or operates a fuel cell system according to a method according to the invention.
The cathode gas may include air. The cathode gas can also be air, in particular dried air. It can also be provided that the cathode gas contains oxygen and/or essentially consists of oxygen. The first reactant can be oxygen.
The anode gas can contain hydrogen and/or consist essentially of hydrogen. The anode gas can also contain steam and/or nitrogen. The second reactant can be hydrogen.
A fuel cell within the meaning of the invention is a galvanic cell which converts the chemical reaction energy of a supplied fuel (anode gas) and an oxidizing agent (cathode gas) into electrical energy. The fuel cell has at least one cathode and one anode, which are separated by at least one semipermeable membrane. The fuel cell can be a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC).
Anode. Both the anode and the cathode are designed to conduct an anode gas or cathode gas from an inlet through a flow path to an outlet. The flow path is typically formed between a cathode or anode surface and the polymer electrolyte membrane, thereby forming a flow channel. The volume enclosed in the flow channel of the respective electrode can also be referred to as the cathode space or anode space. The cathode space or anode space extends from the entrance of the cathode or anode to the exit of the cathode or anode.
A normal operating concentration or required concentration is to be understood as the concentration of the second reactant in the anode or in the anode space. This usually depends on how much of the second reactant is added by flushing or consumed by the operation of the fuel cell.
It can be provided that the anode gas is recirculated. In other words, the anode gas with a second reactant can be introduced into an anode inlet of an anode of the fuel cell and temporarily and/or partially fed back from an anode outlet into the anode inlet such that the anode gas (re)circulates in the anode. It can also be provided that the anode gas is temporarily and/or partially routed from the anode outlet to an exhaust air outlet. Both the recirculation and the derivation to the exhaust air can be provided in the normal state as well as in the demand state.
The method according to the invention for operating a fuel cell has the advantage that when there is an increased demand either for the fuel cell itself or for the power of the fuel cell, a higher power of the fuel cell is provided or The service life of the fuel cell can be extended. Overall, this also saves costs, since the fuel cell later has to be processed, repaired or replaced.
In a method according to the invention, it can preferably be provided that in the normal state the rinsing takes place in a time-discrete manner and/or in an energy-optimal manner. In other words, in the normal state, flushing can take place after fixed periods of time. For example, provision can be made for the fuel cell to be operated in recirculation for a period of 8.5 seconds after flushing for 1.5 seconds. In energy-optimized operation, the ratio between flushing and recirculation is set in such a way that there is a minimum of energy consumed (e.g. for operating pumps) and a maximum of energy provided by the fuel cell (e.g. by reducing nitrogen in the anode chamber by flushing). Both the time-discrete and the energy-optimized flushing in the normal state offers the advantage that the fuel cell has a low consumption even in the normal state, so that the operation of the fuel cell is cost-effective overall.
It is also conceivable within the scope of the invention for the request state to be triggered by a detection and/or processing a user input at the consumer, in particular through a user interface and/or through a detection of a requirement state parameter of the fuel cell, in particular through a control unit. In other words, it can be provided that the request state can be triggered by the user himself, for example by actuating a switch or operating an accelerator pedal. In particular, it can be provided that the user triggers the request mode by fully depressing the gas pedal, as is known in particular in automatic vehicles as a “kick down”. This offers the advantage that the user can easily call up the performance of the fuel cell if he/she sees it as an increased requirement.
Furthermore, in a method according to the invention, it can advantageously be provided that, in the demand state, the quantity of anode gas used for scavenging and/or the scavenging duration is increased compared to the normal state. In other words, the concentration of the second reactant can be increased, in particular by making more anode gas available at the anode, by introducing more anode gas into the anode and/or by increasing the duration that anode gas is introduced into the anode . These options offer the advantage that the concentration of the second reactant, which is increased compared to the normal state, can be provided at the anode without any particular design effort. This also reduces the overall costs of operating the fuel cell.
Furthermore, in a method according to the invention, it can advantageously be provided that, in the normal state and/or in the demand state, a cathode gas system with the first reactant is introduced into a cathode inlet of a cathode of a fuel cell and discharged from a cathode outlet to an exhaust air, with the Mix the anode gas and the cathode gas before the exhaust air, with the amount of the cathode gas that is mixed with the anode gas being increased in the demand state compared to the normal state. In other words, it can be provided that the cathode gas flows through the cathode and is mixed downstream of the cathode with the anode gas, which flows from an outlet of the anode to an exhaust air. Provision can likewise be made for more cathode gas to be made available for mixing before the exhaust air in the demand state than in the normal state. This offers the advantage that sufficient dilution takes place even with an increased concentration of the second reactant in the exhaust air, so that the formation of explosive mixtures is reliably avoided.
It is also conceivable in a method according to the invention that, in the demand state, the cathode gas is at least partially routed via a bypass around the cathode downstream of the cathode. In other words, provision can be made for the cathode gas not to be conducted via the cathode itself, but rather past the cathode directly to exhaust air. This offers the advantage that, in particular with an increased quantity of cathode gas to be made available to an exhaust air, pressure losses in the cathode are reduced or avoided, so that an increased quantity and/or concentration of cathode gas is made available to an exhaust air even at lower power can. Provision can be made for the cathode gas to be routed past a cathode exclusively via the bypass. As a result, a particularly high quantity of cathode gas can be provided for an exhaust air and at the same time the pressure loss can be minimized. This also offers a particularly cost-effective way of operating the fuel cell.
- - a state of health of the fuel cell,
- - a voltage of the fuel cell,
- - a temperature of the fuel cell,
- - a cooling capacity of a cooling device for cooling the fuel cell,
- - a filling level of the anode gas tank,
- - a concentration of the first reactant in the fuel cell,
- - a concentration of the second reactant in the fuel cell,
- - a concentration of nitrogen in the fuel cell.
In other words, it can be provided that the demand status parameter of the consumer is in the form of a status parameter of the fuel cell and/or a status parameter of the fuel cell system. This offers the advantage that a user does not have to trigger the requirement state himself, for example with a user input, but rather the system itself recognizes a requirement state through a state parameter of the fuel cell system or the fuel cell and thus increases the service life of the fuel cell or reliably avoids a throttling of the fuel cell performance can be. This results in the advantage that the fuel cell can be operated efficiently for a particularly long time can be, resulting in a cost advantage.
Furthermore, in a method according to the invention, it can advantageously be provided that an anode gas system with a pump for recirculating the anode gas is provided between an anode outlet of the anode and an anode inlet of the anode, with a pump capacity of the pump being increased in the demand state compared to the normal state, and/or that the anode gas system has an anode gas metering valve for metering in anode gas from the anode gas tank to the anode, with the metering in of anode gas being increased in the demand state compared to the normal state and/or that the anode gas system has a purge valve which, in a closed state, prevents the anode gas from being discharged to the exhaust air and in an open state allows the anode gas to be discharged to the exhaust air, wherein in the demand state the purge valve releases more anode gas for discharge to the exhaust air than in the normal state. In other words, the concentration of the second reactant in the anode space can be increased by various measures. Increasing the pump power requirement state can achieve the advantage that the concentration of the second reactant is distributed more homogeneously over a flow path within the anode chamber and is simultaneously increased without increased consumption of anode gas. The increased metering in via the anode gas metering valve offers the advantage that an increase in the concentration of the second reactant in the anode chamber is reliably ensured and at the same time there is indirect cooling by the anode gas expanding in the fuel cell. The advantage that diffused gases in the anode chamber, which could otherwise reduce the service life of the fuel cell, are discharged more effectively, is in turn achieved through the increased discharge to the exhaust air in the demand state.
Furthermore, it is conceivable in a method according to the invention that the fuel cell system also has a sensor system which is designed to detect one or more demand state parameters of the consumer, the sensor system having in particular a sensor for the second reactant, which is designed to measure the concentration of the to detect second reactants in the fuel cell. In other words, it can be provided that the fuel cell system has means which are suitable for detecting one or more requirement state parameters by means of a physical measurement. This achieves the advantage that the request state can be detected particularly reliably and, accordingly, increased performance can be provided.
According to a further aspect of the invention, a fuel cell system is provided for a consumer, in particular a vehicle, in which a cathode gas with a first reactant and an anode gas with a second reactant are converted into electricity in a fuel cell. Furthermore, it is provided that the fuel cell system has a control unit, the control unit being designed to operate the fuel cell system according to a method according to the preceding claims. In other words, the fuel cell system has a device for controlling the fuel cell or the entire fuel cell system, which is suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention. The fuel cell system according to the invention also achieves the advantage that when there is an increased demand on the fuel cell itself or when there is an increased demand on the power of the fuel cell, a higher power of the fuel cell can be provided by a higher concentration of the second reactant in the anode chamber. Furthermore, by operating in the demand mode, a throttling of the performance of the fuel cell can also be prevented or its service life can be increased. Overall, there is the advantage that costs can be saved when operating the fuel cell or the fuel cell system.
A fuel cell system according to the invention thus has the same advantages as have already been described in detail with reference to a method according to the invention.
