Stand der TechnikState of the art
The present invention relates to an optical wavelength mixer, an optical system with such an optical wavelength mixer and a lidar sensor with such an optical wavelength mixer or such an optical system.
Integrated optical components are known in the prior art which are able to reduce the size of optical systems that are usually large in size to a chip format. In addition, the use of process steps from semiconductor production allows large quantities of such integrated optical components to be produced.
Ferner sind optische Wellenlängenmischer bzw. (De-) Multiplexer bekannt, welche eingerichtet sind, Licht unterschiedlicher Wellenlängen mittels integrierter optischer Schaltungen zu mischen. Solche optischen Wellenlängenmischer sind i. d. Furthermore, optical wavelength mixers or (de)multiplexers are known which are set up to mix light of different wavelengths by means of integrated optical circuits. Such optical wavelength mixers are i. i.e. R. designed to be tunable (e.g. thermal or electro-optical) and variously suitable for low-loss transmission of high optical power.
In addition, optical phase arrays are known which i.a. can be used in lidar sensors in order to implement a beam deflection unit such lidar sensors on the basis of immovable parts. In this connection it is known, for example, to use emitters in the form of grating couplers which are supplied with light via waveguides. A distance between the respective emitters determines how strongly a beam can be deflected. By controlling the phase of the light at each emitter and by the interference of the light in the far field, an arbitrary pattern or a narrow focus can be created and moved in a large angular range in this way.

Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention, an optical wavelength mixer is proposed, which has a network of tunable interferometers designed as Mach-Zehnder interferometers (hereinafter simply referred to as "interferometers") and an evaluation unit, the optical wavelength mixer having an integrated optical wavelength wiper is. The evaluation unit is designed, for example, as an ASIC, FPGA, processor, digital signal processor, microcontroller, or as a different circuit.
In addition, each interferometer has two input ports and at least one output location and is set up to mix the light coupled into the respective input ports and to output the mixed light via the respective output port, with the optical transmission properties of the respective interferometer, which in particular an attenuation of a Include light, are adapted to the wavelengths of the coupled to the input ports light. Furthermore, each interferometer is set up to be tuned by means of at least one controllable phase-effective element, which is designed, for example, as a phase shifter and is arranged in at least one of the two optical arms of the respective interferometer. In addition, the respective Mach-Zehnder interferometers are preferably constructed in such a way that light received through the two input ports is combined by means of a first optical coupler, preferably a 50:50 coupler (e.g. a multi-mode interferometer) and to two Paths are divided, each representing the first arm and the second arm of the interferometer. The two arms also have a predefined optical path length difference ΔL. Light transmitted through the two arms of the interferometer is recombined by means of a second optical coupler, which is preferably configured identically to the first optical coupler. Depending on the phase difference between the two arms, a correspondingly large proportion of the light coupled into the input ports couples into the output port of the interferometer.
The logical structure of the optical wavelength mixer corresponds to a tree structure which has a root node and at least one outer node, each node of the tree structure being formed by an interferometer. Depending on a number of required input ports (depending on a number of light sources to be mixed) of the optical wavelength mixer, the optical wavelength mixer also has a corresponding number of inner nodes of the tree structure. It should be noted that the tree structure can correspond to a complete or an incomplete (binary) tree. It should also be pointed out that a total number of input ports that can be coupled to the respective light sources is not limited to a specific number. However, an advantageous number, which will be described in more detail in the course of the description of preferred configurations of the present invention, can, for example, enable simplified production of the integrated optical wavelength mixer. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the optical wavelength mixer has a higher number of input ports at the interferometers forming the outer nodes than light sources are coupled.
In addition, each input port of each interferometer is optically coupled to an output port of an interferometer located deeper within the tree structure or can be coupled to one light source from a plurality of light sources to be mixed. The lower-lying interferometers should be understood to mean those interferometers which form child nodes of this interferometer within the tree structure in relation to a respectively considered interferometer.
Furthermore, the optical wavelength mixer based on the tree structure is set up to mix light generated by respective coupleable light sources step by step using the interferometer such that a light mixture of all light sources to be mixed is emitted at the output port of the root node. The interferometer forming the root node can in principle be coupled to any optical components via the output port. Non-limiting examples of such components downstream of the optical interferometer include: optical phase arrays or fiber optics.
Finally, the evaluation unit is set up to adapt the respective controllable phase-effective elements of the respective interferometer as a function of the wavelength of the light coupled into the input ports of the respective interferometer. This offers the particular advantage that the interferometers involved in a respective light mixing (i.e. all cascaded stages of the mixer network involved) can be optimally adapted to changes in the wavelengths of the coupled light in order to minimize attenuation by the respective interferometer. Changes in the wavelengths of the coupled-in light can be, for example, undesired fluctuations in the wavelengths, which are caused, for example, by temperature influences. The optical wavelength mixer according to the invention can be used particularly advantageously for mixing frequency-modulated light, in that at least the interferometers involved in a respective mixing are jointly tuned in accordance with the modulation, so that optimum light power transmission can be achieved via the respective branches of the optical wavelength mixer.
Die Unteransprüche zeigen bevorzugte Weiterbildungen der Erfindung. The dependent claims show preferred developments of the invention.
In an advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the output port of the respective interferometer is a first output port and each interferometer also has a second output port, the second output port, corresponding to the first output port, being optically connected to the output of the second optical coupler, so that both output ports are arranged to output the light mixed by the respective interferometer. In addition, the second output port of the respective interferometer is optically coupled to a monitor photodiode and the evaluation unit is set up to control the controllable phase-effective element of the respective interferometer in such a way that a light intensity present at the second output port is minimized or approximated to a predefined value. This ensures that no or only the smallest possible proportion of the light coupled into the input ports of the respective interferometer is present at the second output port of the respective interferometer, which results in an optimized light power transmission from the input ports to the first output port of the respective interferometer. A minimization can be used advantageously in particular when the optical properties of the interferometer to be achieved, in particular with regard to the two arms of the interferometer, have only small (manufacturing) tolerances. On the other hand, an approximation and in particular also a complete attainment of the predefined value can be advantageously used if a minimization of the light intensity at the second output port, e.g. B. due to higher tolerances of the optical properties, does not necessarily lead to a maximum achievable light intensity at the first output port, which is sought according to the invention. In such a case it is possible, for example by means of a calibration process, to determine a respective predefined value for each interferometer, by means of which a maximum light intensity is achieved at the respective first output port. Such a calibration is carried out, for example, by measuring a total light power at the first output port of the interferometer forming the root node, while the respective interferometers are individually tuned in order to determine optimal predefined values for the respective interferometers, which contribute to a maximum achievable total light power. By using the second output port and the monitor photodiode optically coupled to the second output port, it is possible on the basis of a suitable regulation to automatically compensate for respective changes in wavelength of the light coupled into the input ports.
Preferably, a depth of the tree structure is identical from each outer node to the root node of the tree structure. Alternatively or additionally, the number of outer nodes of the building structure corresponds to a power of two. Both features can contribute to a simplified design and/or simplified manufacture of the optical wavelength mixer according to the invention. As already mentioned above, this explicitly does not rule out that one or more input ports of the interferometers, which form the outer nodes, are not coupled to a respective light source, in other words remain unused.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, a controllable phase-acting element is arranged in each of the two optical arms of the respective interferometer, and the two controllable phase-acting elements are set up to generate a relative phase shift of the respectively injected light. This offers the advantage that a basic absorption of light that is unavoidable due to the use of the phase-acting elements is formed as identically as possible by these elements in both arms, so that an optimal mixing of the light from the two arms is made possible. On the one hand, it is conceivable that only one of the two phase-effective elements is driven to generate the desired phase shift. On the other hand, it is conceivable that both phase-effective elements each have an identical phase shift deviating from zero by means of a predefined basic control, e.g. B. in each case 45°, 90°, 180° or a value deviating from this and the relative phase shift takes place in such a way that, starting from this basic control, which corresponds to a uniform phase offset, the phase-effective elements run in opposite directions (i.e., with opposite signs and preferably not necessarily with the same amounts) are controlled.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, an optical system is proposed which has an optical wavelength mixer according to any one of the preceding claims. The optical system also has an optical phase array and/or a plurality of light sources which are each optically coupled to the input ports of the interferometers forming the outer nodes. The optical phased array is optically coupled to the output port of that interferometer which forms the root node of the tree structure and is set up to emit light received through the output port of this interferometer into a vicinity of the optical wavelength mixer (e.g. by means of a grating antenna). The plurality of light sources are each optically coupled to the input ports of the interferometers forming the outer nodes, it being advantageously provided that the light sources and the integrated optical wavelength mixer, and in particular the optical phase array, are jointly integrated components.
Further advantageously, a respective wavelength λ of the light generated by the respective light sources is defined according to λ i =λ 0 +iΔλ, where i is a unique index for each light source (ie, non-negative natural numbers starting at 0), λ 0 is a base wavelength of the optical Systems and Δλ represent a predefined wavelength spacing. It should be noted that the index i does not have to be a continuous index if certain wavelengths according to the above formula are not used.
The optical system particularly advantageously has a predefined assignment of respective light sources to respective input ports of those interferometers which form the outer nodes of the tree structure. This assignment is determined using the steps described below. First, a consecutive input port index /starting at zero is used for those interferometers that represent the outer nodes of the tree structure, with the respective input port index / being assigned in accordance with a logical sequence of these interferometers resulting from the tree structure. In other words, all the input ports of the interferometers forming the outer nodes of the tree structure (which for the logical consideration provided here does not have any crossing connections, ie edges) are numbered consecutively. It goes without saying that in a real implementation of the optical system according to the invention or the optical wavelength mixer on which it is based, it is quite possible for optical connections that cross one another There can be connections between respective interferometers as long as the respective assignments map the logical tree structure. In a next step, a number of required digits S of binary numbers is determined according to S=log 2 (N), where N corresponds to the highest index assigned to the light sources. A binary number is then determined from the index representing the light source currently under consideration, the binary number having a number of digits which corresponds to the number of digits S determined. The order of the digits in the binary number is then reversed and the resulting binary number is converted into a decimal number. In the last step, the light source currently being considered is assigned to the input port index / which corresponds to the previously determined decimal number.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the light sources of the optical system are set up to generate frequency-modulated light. For example, this modulation corresponds to an FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) modulation and/or a modulation with a significantly larger frequency deviation compared to FMCW modulation, which is used in particular for beam deflection into an area surrounding the optical system by means of the optical phase arrays can be used sensibly. In addition, the evaluation unit is set up to simultaneously tune all interferometers, which are required for a mixture of light sources that are currently to be mixed, in accordance with a respective frequency modulation of the coupled-in light.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, a lidar system (in particular for a means of transportation) is proposed which has an optical wavelength mixer or an optical system as described above. Such a lidar system offers the advantage that no mechanical components (e.g. macro-mirrors, micro-mirrors, etc.) are required to deflect a scanning beam. The features, combinations of features and the resulting advantages correspond to those explained in connection with the first and second mentioned aspects of the invention in such a way that, to avoid repetition, reference is made to the above explanations.
